This movie is about an exact war situation in a country in west Africa. at the end, when the boys were mining for gold, it was a portrayal of that country that has blood diamonds and child soldiers. why it rarely gets brought up might be political. its a very very sad story line that reflects the actual state of a country

+Zein Alfurati if you actually read the interview with Anthony Horowitz, you'll understand that what he said is totaly misquoted from what he was saying
Zein Alfurati Black-washing is annoying when it's unnecessary [and only done to attract a bigger audience, like in Fantastic Four], but Bond has been adapted so many times for the big screen. Could it hurt to have the next Bond actor be black? I, for one, would be interested in seeing how a black Bond would work out. Changing his sexual orientation is a completely different matter, as being a womanizer is a vital part of his history (Bond GIRLS anyone)? Changing his orientation would make no sense, and I haven't heard of many people who want a gay Bond. That wouldn't be profitable anyway; and it's not like a HUGE amount of people who watch the Bond films are gay. ***** Also, racist XD
Best film I've seen in a long while. Agu is perhaps my favorite character of all time. To see his transformation was profoundly sad. This movie was a roller coaster of emotion. A film not easily forgotten, this movie is unlike anything else I've seen in cinema.
Really good film. Everyone played their role amazingly. the character Strika also had such a big influence in the film despite not saying a single word.
Media has be brought attention to child soldiers for a long time, so im not sure what you're talking about, Blood Diamond? And im sure Gerard Butler has a movie about this sort of thing too.
Youre right but every cause, in this case child soldiers, tends to fall through the cracks when another media spectacle has been brought forward. Kony 2012 was pretty big for a while until people started parading the title as a way to show off that they were with the times despite being vastly misinformed about the situation over there. I'm just hoping this will bring the attention back to the fact it hasn't just disappeared because we haven't made a movie about it in a while.

+Taron Ikram I'm not sure that the act of jumping on that woman was an accident. By which I mean, perhaps he did it to try and save her somehow from what he guessed was inevitable for her at the hand of his fellow soldiers. I could be wrong because it all happened so fast.
Gloria A I interpreted it as him actually thinking it was his mum initially since he willed to find her so much. Then he realised it wasn't his mum and eventually shot her because of both the disappointment of her not being his mum and the woman reminding him so much of his mum. Remember that he was drugged up (if I recall correctly), so he wasn't thinking straight at this point.
I actually saw him shooting the woman as an act of mercy. Eespecially considering what was happening to her/ about to happen to her. Perhaps the answer is clear in Uzodinma Iweala's book - the one from which the screenplay was adapted. I'm going to need to re-watch the film, though not too soon. I'm still recovering from the first time. :-)
Gloria A You could well be right, to be honest. But his initial reaction of seeing her seemed so genuine and his later realisation as well. Also, what would have happened to the woman? If they planned on killing her after what was happening to her, then I definitely understand why he would shoot her as an act of mercy. But otherwise, I'm not so sure.
+Piccolo hit em with that Special Beam Cannon yep, and they are leaving big movie studios in the dust. and they deserve it! movie studios only care about big sequel blockbusters. they are now learning that most viewers dont care about them as much as they do
While i understand this film is enjoyed by everyone watching, i could only get about half way through, not from lack of interest but from the amount of realism involved. It was so heavy, so sad, and hard to get through and while some people might want to relieve and rewatch that kind of thing over and over again, i personally couldn't. Great to see all of the attention its getting and high praise. The cast and crew did a great job!
I feel exacly the same way... There's a moment in the movie where you see "strika" one of the kid beat a little girl and I just couldn't watch the rest. I had to stop there not from lack of interest like you said but the realism exacly like you !
Aint that the whole point ..It should be a hard watch if its about child soldiers by default...saw a lotta ppl winging about 12yrs a slave in the same way "oooo it's too realistic...its hard to watch ..is there any need to be so violent?.." ect ect... Good films about real actual horror ppl jus like me n you are forced to live thru...(usually thru the fault of western politics )..And should be a difficult watch and should be shocking enough that it sticks with you for weeks afterwards...that means its doing its job and thats a rare thing for movies...If you wanna ostrich your way thru things then go watch 'Paul blart-mall cop 6' or something like....
If someone don't have the stomach to watch realistic cinematic recreations of the horrors of war...etc..... just makes me think why the hell are they trying to watch it in the first place. My daughter is very sensitive to realistic movies that are very violent and she would not even consider watching a movie like this.... She says they give her bad dreams ......myself ..I enjoy the realism of the violence .....

Idris Elba can play any role. Even as an Englishman, he nailed that African accent. I believe he would have done well with the James Bond role if given the chance.
This is in fact an accent close to Nigeria and Ghana. If we wish to be strict, there is not an "african accent" : Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, all have different ways of speaking. You will notice it by the way they pronounce "t". In East Africa, people speak English with a "tch" sound and a lot of "i". eg: In(i) East(i) Africa, people speak(i) English with(i) a "tch" sound(i) and a lot of (ovo) "i".
Emmanuel Abijo see these people how they like to say British when a African is successful but black African , Nigerian ? Jamaican or Somalian or something when they do something bad 🤣
People need to stop comparing this to black panther Beast of no nation was made to show situations in Africa, Black panther was made to give black people a superhero because we never had a good one before that wasn’t a side kick
King Henry you get inspired more when the person you look up too looks like you, there no way at al that I can relate to Superman but I can relate to black panther in many ways, just like Asian kids always look up to people like Bruce lee when it comes to entertainment 🤷🏾♂️
King Henry and America schools also like to portray African history as poor and all we were were “slaves” when that’s a complete lie, and this movie is bringing light to Africa’s amazing rich history also, it’s helping the black community in many ways

+daquawn griffin no, he's British. I know in America they label blacks as "African American" but in the UK there is no such thing, it doesn't matter what colour or race you are, you are still considered British. Trust me I'm from the UK.
Extraordinary film. Attah has to get a statuette for this performance, it's incomprehensible that a child and a first-time actor at that could carry a film in this way with such a powerful and nuanced performance. Elba was magnificent as always.
I watched the whole movie on Netflix this weekend. At the beginning of the movie, I found myself laughing at the children trying to sell an imaginary TV, which was pretty funny. But after that scene, there was nothing at all to laugh at. What a serious movie this one is! But this morning as I was ironing my clothes for work and was thinking about the movie again, I realized that Humanity is the beast of no nation, for allowing us to kill each other off & abusing one another for any reason. Every human-being is needed on this earth to up-keep the earth, up-keep the animals, manage this place and to protect ourselves from the real enemy - The Aliens (the unseen ones), who have us all killing one another for their Entertainment. They have fooled us all and now we're the Beasts - Humanity.
+Tef I never thought of it that way, but I don't think Humanity is the beast. Rather, it is the lack of humanity that allows these terrible things to happen. The absence of humanity in these child soldiers and those who permit this killing is the true beast. Without humanity, these kids lose all sense sympathy, kindness, and value of life. 'Beast' in the title serves a dual role: the child soldiers who have lost their families and ties to country and inhumanity that is never relegated to any one culture or country. I loved the opening scene of the film with the camera looking through the imagination TV and then zooming out. It was an early statement by the film that said this isn't just happening on your TV. This is happening in our world.
I love when movies switch up tones like that. It usually happens in war movies such as this one. I remember watching Hacksaw Ridge thinking it was going to be a comedy after the first 30 mins. BOOOOYYY I was wrong.

Idris Elba has a BAFTA Nomination for Best Supporting Actor! Hopefully a bit of British bias pulls his to the win. Then again another 2 Brits are in the same category.
+TheCulturalBomb I'm hoping they do at least get Oscar noms.. Those categories u listed, it may be up for but they're VERY competitive this year.. BONN could WIN Best Adapted Screenplay & POSSIBLY Best Director..!
+Acharich Speaks Sadly it hasn't gotten any Oscar noms :(
The bridge scene is one of the best in movie history. It ascended me to another plane of existence and I had chills the whole time. I was so immersed at that moment that I felt like I was about to take the bridge myself!
Such a powerful movie and score along with stellar performances by Idris Elba, Abraham Attah (the kid) and everyone else in the film. If you haven't seen this yet, do yourself a favor and WATCH IT!!!
Yeah I rewatched that scene like 10 times. Couldn't believe what I was seeing/hearing. Idris brought that exploitative charisma to another plane
@@NickHunterdo you now what he was saying in that scene?

I stumbled across this movie 7 years later. How is it that nobody ever brings up this masterpiece when describing the best war movies?
I agree
This movie is about an exact war situation in a country in west Africa. at the end, when the boys were mining for gold, it was a portrayal of that country that has blood diamonds and child soldiers. why it rarely gets brought up might be political. its a very very sad story line that reflects the actual state of a country
Netflix is killing the game right now and this looks like gold..

Netflix has got this on-lock. Cinematography is amazing, and I'm sure Idris isn't "too street" to pull off a great performance in this potential masterpiece.
+Zein Alfurati alot of ppl do u dumb ass
+Donovan Brown exactly. that's the reason why he's even being considered.
+Zein Alfurati A gay Bond? haha, no. But a black Bond? Why not?

This movie was so impactful, that even a year after watching this movie, this trailer still makes my heart rate increase.
I'm glad they're bringing attention to child soldiers. I'm excited to watch.
+Breadstick Cowboy mature...

To everyone freaking out because this didn't get an Oscar Nom...just FYI, since it's a Netflix movie, it CANT be nominated. Which is too bad, because that little boy would have walked away with one. He was truly astounding.
+vAllie K It can be nominated. it opened in theaters same day--that means it was eligible.
It has to have a distinguished premiere at a certain LA theatre and it did not. I've already check many times because I was furious when none of them were nominated for an Academy Award.
This film has been screened at the 72nd Venice International Film Festival, so it's eligible. Even FOREIGN FILMS that don't get premiered in LA, gets an Oscar nod.
+vAllie K I agree. A young boy with a convincing "1000 yard stare" is heart breaking.
It was released in theaters so it was eligible, how the hell it wasn't nominated is beyond me
That scene where Agu mistakes a woman for his mum.... God.
+Taron Ikram I'm not sure that the act of jumping on that woman was an accident. By which I mean, perhaps he did it to try and save her somehow from what he guessed was inevitable for her at the hand of his fellow soldiers. I could be wrong because it all happened so fast.
+Gloria A Yeah, I was thinking that too..

+Piccolo hit em with that Special Beam Cannon Not really. Every movie I want to see is not offered on either one.
It's one of 2 films I cried for last year, and the other was nostalgia, not incredible filmmaking.
I feel exacly the same way... There's a moment in the movie where you see "strika" one of the kid beat a little girl and I just couldn't watch the rest. I had to stop there not from lack of interest like you said but the realism exacly like you !
nostalgia .. greek word :)

You know he's african right? lmaoo. This is how he spoke at home with his parents

Cant even begin to imagine for what it takes a child to perform and act like that, truly this movie is one of the best.
Really aliens, who is Ur dealer I want whatever your on.
