I read the spotter’s handbook with my daughter and we had a lot of fun, thought she said it was a bit weird. So result basically. Bill Bryson - A Walk in the woods is a delightful slow easy paced trot through the Appalachian Trail.
I tried to read a Bill Bryson once but didn't get on with it. I should try again.

My favorite Theroux book is “The Happy Isles Of Oceania”. One of only a handful of books I’ve reread four times, as of today. Stay cool!

My favourite journey book would be Famous Five Go Off In A Caravan, by Enid Blyton.
I once bought the first Famous Five for my niece at Christmas. I had never read it before. I started reading it to her over Christmas and when I left to go back to London I secretly bought it on my Kindle so I could find out what happened. I was about 38.
For a story about a journey you can't forget Lord of the Rings! But when I was younger, I loved "We Didn't Mean To Go To Sea" by Arthur Ransome.
I did enjoy Swallows and Amazons when I was younger. Will check this out.
McCarthys Bar by Pete McCarthy is my favourite it tells of his travels around Ireland and its bars !

Best kids journey book has to be Stig of the Dump. For adults, so many....Round Ireland With A Fridge is genius.
I remember the Stig of the Dump TV series. I started watching the film of Round Ireland with A Fridge once. It was one of the worst things I have ever seen.

my favourite books about a journey are The Day of Creation by J.G. Ballard and Otherland by Tad Williams
I read 'Otherland' about 20 years ago I think, after I finished his Dragonbone Chair trilogy. I can't remember what happened.
I like Alan Garner's books which have a strong connection to the countryside, even if they are for children or 'young adults'. The Owl Service is really good.
I have not heard of him. Will put him on my list. A lot of the young adult books are the best ones I find. I don't understand the weird classification of anything slightly mystical or otherworldly as 'young adult'.
Elidor is fantastic.
I liked Tim Moore's Another Fine Mess where he travels Atlantic to Pacific Coast in a Model T Ford. I quite like his writing generally but I enjoyed this one the most.

I was going to suggest that too. Great choice. Tim Moore’s other classic is ‘The Cyclist Who Went Out In The Cold’ where he rides a Soviet boneshaker around the Iron Curtain former borders from north (Finland) to south (Bulgaria)
My favorite book has always been Watership Down. Read it as a kid and no movie or anything else had completely transported me into that world so beautifully. I couldn't put it down except to go pee and drink.
My favorite book is The Martian. The journey across Mars is a lot longer and difficult than shown in the movie.
An excellent book. I bought on Amazon for 50p before it became famous. The only time in my life I have been ahead of everyone else.

One of the first books I read and was properly into. I remember it being called "The Phantom Tollbooth Keeper" though. Is this a Mandela Effect thing?
It was always the Phantom Tollbooth I think.

'Roadside Picnic' by the Strugatsky brothers is one of my favourite 'journey' books. The bulk of the (short) novel is leading up to/planning the journey. It's about hazardous alien visitation sites and stuff, so maybe a bit nerdy for a jock like yourself.

The rush for the bus was hilarious! "Look how red I am... I'll give you the details for the walk once I've calmed down a bit!" I recently enjoyed Simon Reeve's book "Step by step" - he's a modern day explorer - has done trips where he follow the equator or tropic lines - came across as a great storyteller and good guy.
I've seen some of his TV stuff and he comes across really well. I will look them up.
I must say, my daughter and I have thoroughly enjoyed your brother's Podkin One-Ear books a lot as well. If anyone is thinking of needing gift ideas for a child look no further (after your Pooman cards purchases of course) 😉

I don't know if it's strictly a 'journey' - more getting lost in the woods - but I love, love, love The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King. And all of the Gary Paulsen books about being lost in the wilderness. And Dark Summer by Ali Sparkes, which is a kids' book but it's about a boy who gets lost in the Wookey Hole caves and it's amazing. 👍 I think I just really like books about people getting lost. 🤣
I have not ready any of those. Stephen King can either be amazing or awful. I think my favourites of his are 11/22/63, The Stand and Hearts of Atlantis, plus loads of the Bachman short stories.

The Hobbit, The Chronicles of Narnia and The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry are great travel books. Round Ireland with a fridge, is interesting Marek 😂
I have read all of those cool dude. I like the Hobbit and the Narnia stuff, but was not that impressed by the Harold Fry or that Round Ireland with a fridge. There is a film of the latter which might be the worst film of all time.

I just read "Free Country: A Penniless Adventure the Length of Britain" about a couple of guys that try cycling from Lands End to John O Groats. They start off in a pair of pants and have to rely on the kindness of strangers to get them to their destination. Well written and pretty funny too!
Ha. I once pitched a TV show called 'Just my Pants' about two comedians being dropped off in Romania in just their pants. I didn't realise it had already been done.

A great video Cool Dude (even though it did rain on you!). I cant stand the rain or hailstones when out cycling cos my cycling glasses fog up & I cant see the potholes! 😄
The books that I'd recommend are 'Down & Out in Paris & London' by George Orwell. George Orwell's vivid memoir of his time living among the desperately poor & destitute in Paris & London. A very moving journey of the underworld of society.
Another favourite has to be 'The Famous 5 go Adventuring Again!

Newport bus station and Church Litten can be seriously scary places. Much more dangerous than Parkhurst and potential prisoner escapes

i love the added jeopardy - will Marek catch the bus or miss the bus. This walk looks much nicer than last weeks around Elstree. Best book about journeys - A to Z of France 2014, I don't think you can get it in the shops any more, which is strange, cos there were loads when I bought it.
All the roads in France have been destroyed.

Dude read Soldier I. Its an autobiography from one of the top SAS. Loads of journeys in it. It is also a brilliant read. Made me want to join the army after reading it... luckily for me my broken back won't let me join.
Fun fact- squirrels forget about 80% of their stashes. So essentially squirrels plant trees.
Excellent Squirrel fact. I have seen the squirrel burying things in my garden.
I'll look up that SAS book, I am probably still young enough to join.

Hey Marek ! 😃👍 Another great video, really enjoyed that one. It had everything.... Comedy, history, suspense, brilliant. I never knew that the Krays were in Parkhurst. Is it still called Parkhurst? I drove from Bembridge to Cowes last year and went past "Isle Of Wight Prison". Is this the same place? Or is there more than one Prison? The adventure book I really enjoyed was the Autobiography of Sir Ranulph Fiennes. Amazing read. Thanks for the great videos, stay cool dude ! Matt - Solihull 😁👍

I love "Traversa" by Fran Sandham - a journey across Africa with lots of details about blisters.
I just did the Serpent Trail, without any blisters! This must be a world record.
Favourite journey book: A Time of Gifts by Patrick Leigh Fermor. Brilliant travel memoir of his walk from Holland to Constantinople in the 1930s. Possibly my favourite book of all time.
I have put this on my list. It looks a bit like the excellent 'As I walked out one Midsummer Morning' by Laurie Lee.
Waterlog by Roger Deakin is great, I like how it makes you contemplate jumping in every pond you see.
I thought this was the cinematographer first of all then I remembered he is 'Deakins', probably still likes swimming though.

Three Men in a Boat - Jerome K Jerome, American Interior - Gruff Rhys, War of the Worlds - H.G Wells, Superman Grounded - J Michael Straczynski, America Unchained - Dave Gorman, and I want to say the Dark Tower books by Stephen King, but that's pretty long winded and not all of them are good it starts great but doesn't hold.
I've read 'The Time Machine' and really enjoyed it so I should try 'War of the Worlds'.

I would recommend Homer's Odyssey and Virgil's Aeneid. Read both as a teenager and I still think about them often. Epic journeys in both books.
I had the Iliad when I was young but never read more than the first few pages. I should try the Odyssey as I love the Greek Myths.

@@cdwc I don’t know what the magic faraway tree is about but it was written by Enid Blyton and is about some children who travel to the city of happiness but on the way have to pass the city of turmoil with horrible characters etc. They find peace and happy times in the end. 😌

Everyone loves a zombie Apocalypse. I thought it was impossible to make a bad zombie film until I started watching 'Army of the Dead.'

Dead bodies was in an early draft of a handbook. Then I thought if you actually found a dead body, ticking it off for three points would probably be the last thing on your mind.

The Forever War is physically accurate science fiction. The characters journey across space close to speed of light and it causes some quite interesting time dilation effects.

If no one has already mentioned it, The Long Walk by Steven King under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Unsurprisingly it's a harrowing nightmare of a book, which is exactly what you want from that author. I'll also suggest Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which is a tale about a journey, while also being about a book specifically used for journeys.

My favourite travel book has to be Michael Palin's Around the world in 80 days (although to sound more cultured I should probably have said the Jules Verne version!) Having looked up the TV series I am delighted to say that it's currently on iPlayer so I'm enjoying that at the moment too!!

These are a little on the nose but, Wild by Cheryl Strayed and A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson are both excellent, in different ways. They're about walking the two massive trails on each coast of America.
I should read Wild at some point. I watched a bit of the film. It's the PCT and the Appalachian Trail I think.
We drove 2 hours to Oban last Christmas for our festive shop at Aldi (!!??)
Cool Dudes, I am sad to report that a Red Squirrel committed hari kari and ran in front of our car. It nearly spoilt Christmas for me. Although if it had been a turkey it would have saved us most of the trip.

I've still never seen a red squirrel, you're very luck to have them in your garden. I'll have to make do with hedgehogs.

Papillon by Henri Charriere is my fave journey book although it's about escaping from prison so ties in with your info about Parkhurst. Do Decathlon do Mosipants as I have been bitten quite badly in the nether regions before and I find that the mosquito repellent tends to sting a bit 'down there'? Nice yellow jacket, though it did clash with your red 'bus rush' face 😂
Someone else recommended Papillon too. Will check it out. Meanwhile I think Decathalon do everything.

My favourite journey book(s) are still the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series. First read them 40years ago!
I also recall the Parkhurst jailbreak as we’d just moved into our house in Soton. I spent the whole night peeking through windows looking out for baddies in case they tried to break in.
I had to turn back and try another route and jump over the gate.
I enjoyed the Hitchhikers guide but haven't read them for about 30 years.

I was actually camping as a scout with my scout friends and scout leaders when the prisoners broke out fairly near by at parkhurst and we heard they were stealing food from campsites and we heard something in our camp at night and we had to wake up and see who it was and the only thing I had to defend myself was a badminton racket but it was probably just a fox
This is an excellent story. It was genuinely pretty exciting wondering whereabouts on the island they were at the time. I reckon it was definitely the prisoners at your camp site.

I don't really have any favourite books about a journey, although I have read the Hobbit, I enjoyed Stephen King's short story The Body and The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut is sort of about a journey but it is a very good book.

Sirens of Titan is an amazing book. The first Vonnegut I read. Stephen King did a brilliant short story as Richard Bachman called 'The Long Walk'. I often thing about it. It is sort of a grisly competition. I won't spoil it for you, but definitely worth a read.
Yes, it's one of my favourite books, along with Breakfast of Champions. I have read the long walk too but not in years, I must read it again at some point.

@@cdwc There's actually not much walking in it, mostly penal colony life with escapes here and there, often by sea. But I really enjoyed it.

I think you could start a separate channel for videos of bus journeys.
For reasons of variety I'll suggest some non-fiction travel/journey books. The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe about the space travel pioneers and the Mercury 7. A Man On The Moon by Andrew Chaikin about the Apollo missions. Are You Dave Gorman by Dave Gorman and Danny Wallace.
Not another channel! Will check out that Tom Wolfe stuff. Space travel has always horrified me. Claustrophobia in endless space.
