James McCracken is a unique singer. It’s important to note that. There are those like Bjoring, Caruso, Corelli, DiStefano … those who are instantly recognizable as sui generis. His voice was his own, and unreproducible, like him or not. I was honored to see him in Otello and Turandot, as well as in a recital of Irish songs. Also, his story is a fine personal one, or striving, rejection, and ultimate triumph and acceptance. I cherish hearing/seeing him in person, and listening again to this remarkable performance.
His Canio, witnessed up close for a period of weeks in the Fall of ‘85, when he was almost 59, was Colossal & Staggering in every way imaginable, titanic even 🙌 Critics described him even then as still being a ‘Force of Nature’, being ‘akin to a Tornado’ an ‘overwhelming earthquake of unbelievable power and humanity’, etc, etc 🎶🎭 was all of a piece with him, 1 of the greatest ‘Total Performers’ in operatic history 👏👏👏 What I remember most was the spontaneity & open-hearted passionate honesty still available to his portrayal after more than 300 Canio’s onstage (true, he did Otello well-over 500x), how vibrant & fresh his approach remained, nothing fudged & absolutely nothing ‘just for show’ 🍀💙 I’ve never witnessed any operatic singer or singing-actor more truthful, honest & direct, more insanely communicative, powerful or more noble & formidable all-around; certainly none who I could truly say were more unique 🌟 To say he was THE most remarkable Canio I’ve ever experienced is Easy ⚖️ No great tenor in that role, not even Vickers, PDo, Bergonzi, Pav, Giacomini, Atlantov, King, Galouzine, etc, etc, surpassed McCracken in Pagliacci (or Otello, for that matter, even at the end of his life & career) 🙏
Yo? tengo la voz y la tesitura identica, o casi identica a Mc Cracken, pero, no soy conocido, y porque? pues porque no me e presentado en algun concurso, y espero que ya que pueda vivir en USA, logre ir a un concurso, y pues si McCracken es para mi un Tenor Spinto, y yO? pues soy tambien un Tenor Spinto, el se ve un poco de edad, pero ahora no se la edad que tenga, yo? pues tengo como su edad, pero me veo mas Joven que McCracken espero que logre estar en un concurso muy pronto. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Creo que le faltó un poco de credibilidad al final. Curioso porque después de un Otello memorable uno debe exigir un poco más. Lo otro es la pronunciación que en esta aria es indispensable que sea muy clara. Habiendo dicho lo anterior, es indudable que tenores de este calibre ya son especímenes en extinción.

Habría sido fabuloso verlo presentar la ópera completa a su edad. Se supone que Canio era un hombre viejo mientras que Nedda era una chiquilla.
