The Cooper Spur area on Mt. Hood is a blast for backcountry skiing. The area was threatened by a large destination resort and ski area development that was proposed in 2001.
The Crag Law Center worked with local citizens, conservation groups and backcountry enthusiasts to protect this area. On behalf of local residents, we filed a legal action in court to stop a backroom land trade, we worked to have the Tilly Jane Trail protected on the national register of historic places and then in 2009 Congress passed a law to permanently protect the area.
Now the area is to be designated as Wilderness, and we are working with the Forest Service and the owner of the little ski area and the Inn at Cooper Spur to permanently protect this area for future generations.
