He didn't write it entirely at that age, he just made up the chord progression of the intro, the development of the other sections and the lyrics were made afterwards with the band
I've been arguing for years now, that the introspect and wisdom reflected within many of the lyrics written by Rock, and "Alternative Rock" artists of the latter part of the 20th century, rival those of all the great "Classics" throughout history. But what really amazes me, is that this was accomplished primarily by our "youth". And it's my strong contention that the fact that this modern day "Age of Enlightenment" occurred during the same period as the "Psychedelic Era", was far more than a coincidence.

YES, that definitely is Steven Tyler. The human voice matures as we get older. Killer, killer song and singer. I saw them live in Syracuse NY in 1976, in their prime and unbelievable.
I’m 60 years old and still get chills every time I hear this song just like I did when I first heard it back in the early 70s. Steven Tyler is unreal on vocals.
This is the real Steven Tyler voice. Mountains of cocaine, nine vocal surgeries and years of touring led to what he sounded like in the mid 80's when they resurrected their career. The man recreated himself in amazing fashion.
This is the voice of Aerosmith that I grew up on. It was that high range of Tyler's voice that was so distinctive to us at the time. (he always had passion) He's admitted that age has made it hard for him to reach some of those higher notes today. As far as taking his own advice too strongly..... all of those experiences are what make him the man he is today and I love who he is now so......
This was early Aerosmith doing something of a "Stairway to Heaven" thing. It was primarily a local hit in Boston when first released (in 1973) and then charted in the Top Ten nationally a couple of years later after the band had started to get more attention.
I love, love Steven Tyler’s voice especially from the early days. I am amazed he didn’t lose his voice with the stress on his vocals, drugs, operations…he has carried on! Aerosmith is a rocker’s rock band 🎸☮️💎😃
The album this song is from was the first album I ever bought, along with Carole King's first album, Tapestry. I know....two completely different kinds of music but loved both. You could hear shades of what you know of Stephen Tyler's voice near the end of the song---but some hard living can make a difference in one's voice along with simply aging. Try "Same Old Song and Dance" off Aerosmith's "Get Your Wings" album.
I saw an article recently that said the band Aerosmith has retired after 58 years due to the fact that Steven Tyler had suffered irreparable damage to his vocal cords. That is sad news, but what a record they have set. 58 years. Wow! So glad they've shared all that awesome music with us. Thanks guys! 👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️
A young Steven Tyler, but still amazing. You can actually hear much of his style here in early development, but brilliant even then. I remember when this song came out. I think it was an instant hit. There are many versions where he sings this in recent years that sound so great.
I was going to take my oldest son to see Aerosmith for his first concert, my first Aerosmith concert, it was canceled because Stephen Tyler had problems with his throat and ended up having surgery on his vocal chords. We were pretty bummed, but ultimately glad he recovered and was still able to sing, The performances after, are a bit more raspy, than when he was younger.
70's Aerosmith is their classic material. Anything late 80's or later is not even close. 1) Seasons of Wither (74) 2) Adam's Apple- (75) 3) Last Child (76) 4) Kings & Queens (77) When you say does not sound like Steven Tyker this was 1973.their first album! This was the real A-Smith

The classic Steven Tyler voice is actually an affectation that was common among the 70s rock bands. Tyler is just really fantastic at it. There is actually a recording of a live performance done only a few years ago. While not doing the metal scream, Tyler still sounds a lot like he does in this song. His voice has definitely changed as he is aged but he has kept it in good shape.
Their first hit from their first album. His scream at end sounds great, but 50 years of screaming and age has changed his voice. Still great but different.
Steven Tyler wrote sang and played the piano in "Dream On". Though he was much younger then .He has always been and continues to be a power house.Dynamic as ever.
I had the exact same confusion about Tyler's voice when I first heard it. Had to look it up. He explained he hadn't settled on his singing style yet. It was their first hit.
I’m surprised how surprised you are 😆 Maybe because I’ve followed Steven for decades and it seems to me like a natural progression. Steven is Steven, new and old. one of the greatest entertainers of all time. 👑
I read somewhere that Steven Tyler was unsure of his voice in the beginning and purposely used the higher raspier voice to give his voice more soul. The producer of Dream On told him to sing in his natural voice, which is what you just heard. I know the rock star life, and aging, has changed his voice but I think he should have used his natural voice more. He’s not the only singer to adjust his voice. Freddy Mercury usually sang as a tenor but his natural voice was baritone. I found this article www.grammy.com/grammys/news/dream-7-facts-about-aerosmiths-classic-song-grammy-hall-fame
This is the classic sound of Aerosmith - and Steven Tyler. They recorded "Dream On" in June of 1972... and it was released on their first album in January of 1971. The single peaked at #59 in 1971... but went to #6 when they re-released it in 1976. It was their highest charting single of the 1970's. It was amusing to hear you going on about how you couldn't believe that voice was Steben Tyler... because for those of us who were there in the 1970's - that is THE voice of Steven Tyler. Tyler was 24 years old when he recorded this song in 1972.
When Aerosmith Smith first started out in the early 70’s this is what their studio albums sounded like. As the years/decades passed they sounded more “live concert sound” with their studio tracks!!!!! I think they learned from ACDC who of course just give you energy no matter where they play be it live, studio, sound check, jam sessions or if they are dicking around in the bathroom!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 So says Austin Texas!!!! 😎🍸

I Don't Want to Miss a Thing. This song is almost FIFTY YEARS OLD (recorded in '72). Voices age just like everything else on or in our bodies. Try listening to Paul McCartney, or Neil Diamond. Even Elton's voice has changed considerably.
As the date of this charting single from their first album indicates, this is the first Aerosmith song most of us heard. You're hearing them and Steve Tyler not completely from current, (aka end) but this is their beginning. Listen to that whole first album, and see if his voice comes on more like you know of it in their later songs. He does belt it out towards the end, and that certainly had to sound a bit more like 'your' Steve Tyler. Great song to react to brother.
Steven Tyler painstakingly honed and crafted this song for years into this masterfully assembled, slow-building tour-de-force. A signature achievement.
In addition to age and the issues others have mentioned, Stevie T also made a conscious effort to sound a bit more macho starting in the mid to late.1970s.
I love Aerosmith. One of my favorites is “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”. i heard that version hundreds of times and when he sang it more recently I didn't get the 'that's not him' reaction , I was happy he can still hit all the long notes, he' must have Tom Jones genes.
