What I love about Touhou 6's dialogues is that the game might be conscious that the game's _a game_ . Especially the 4th wall breaking moments like "I'll freeze you with English beef! (Cirno)"
And man, I thought you would be at 10k subs by now. You need more love

Considering the real World is technically canon in touhou, thats not really a 4th wall break
The truly 4th wall break is Flandre 'That means you can't continue!'

To me personally, EoSD has always been the most pure and unadulterated touhou game out there. Sure it's aged a bit,but it's the very foundation of every game since and it's influence can still be seen today.

Game's the blueprint for a bright future tbh, it feels so simple and to the point but still charming

I believe there was a built in character limit in EoSD, making the English translation incredibly awkward.
    Especially the THCRAP version
Idk how awkward the Japanese dialog is, but the English defiantly doubled down on the awkward dialog

Nice review! In my opinion, Touhou 6 has the most memorable cast of characters and It's simplicity and the lack of gimmicks ads to the charm of the game!

It had some dialogue that gave me a chuckle; I remember Patchy's 'How to take out the black thing in front of me without having to do anything' got me. Brought up the weirdness of Reimu's dialogue, was told that it was meant to be read as if the characters were playing out a murder mystery and it made more sense. Wasn't aware of the Agatha Christie inspiration and once I did some of it made more sense.

I still don't understand what Marisa meant to Sakuya when she said "I'll be arrested under the Washington Convention if I catch you"...

    • @Megapig9001

Let me take a guess: Sakuya is a Maid, who is traditionally a “non-combatant”. I assume the “Washington Convention” and the “Geneva Convention” are the same thing, so Marisa attacking a civilian actively would be commiting a war crime?

Washington Convention is actually about international trade of endangered plants/animals. Basically it's there to make sure this trade does not endanger survival of the species.
And since Marisa fucking "borrows" everything she touches... I guess the joke is that maids aren't that common nowadays.

Before I became very fond of EoSD I was a useless lazy bum, after I did I became an artist again, and a new musician, ZUN gave me my purpose in a way, The 3 years of residing in the fandom have never been as joyous as this, my nephew hates Touhou like Satan himself, he doesn't know that he is missing out on an endless mine of gold, a mine that can never run out.

The game that put Touhou on the map. It's weirdly nostalgic to me, brings me back to 2002, despite my never playing it until many years later. I have a deep affinity for old-school Japanese games. Such is the magic.

EOSD has definitely aged in terms of gameplay, visuals and dialogue. It’s a very simple game, even compared to its sequel right after, but this somewhat adds to the charm. It has a very cozy and weirdly nostalgic feeling, with an iconic soundtrack that builds on the world and character personalities. Even with the invisible hurtbox and lack of an enemy indicator, it’s still a very accessible title difficulty wise. It has a consistent level of difficulty after stage 3, with less dense bullet patterns compared to future games. It’s definitely not the best title, but it’s an extremely important stepping stone for the series, and it’s still fun and worthwhile playing today.

Marisa "Do you remember the amount of people you sucked the blood of?"
Remilia "Do you remember the amount of breads you've eaten in your lifetime?"
Marisa "Yes, 13 times. I usually eat Japanese food."
    That dialogue made me chuckle.

  • @EirinYagokoro

Touhou 6 feels dated. Not much extra gameplay mechanics. The patterns aren't really that special, more like "here's a random barrage of bullets, dodge it!" which contributes to the difficulty of the game. The spell cards are very RNG based, for example is the final boss' Scarlet Gensokyo spell card can trap you into walls of bullets no matter how good you are when it comes to predicting, dodging and grazing. Even Touhou 4 & 5 had better bullet patterns and some interesting attacks from the enemies even if they didn't have spell cards that time. Controls are very clunky and there's no hitbox indicator. That said, TH6 is still iconic since it was the first game available for windows, can be easily played by everyone and contained the most popular characters such as Remilia, Sakuya, Flandre, Cirno, Patchy, etc. Plus amazing music
