- Part 2 (NO TRAMPOLINE): • Teach Yourself a Backf...
ALL THE DRILLS AND SKILLS HAVE A RISK OF SERIOUS INJURY, ANYONE TRYING THEM IS LIABLE FOR THEIR OWN INJURIES
This video is a culmination of the knowledge I've gained teaching several dozen people to do backflip, young and old.
If you are mildly athletic or willing to work out to the point where you are mildly athletic I believe 100% that you can use this video to learn a backflip
to come soon: Drills for those without access to a trampoline
5:10 is the list of progressive drills to the floor
Background music: Deadmau5 - Armed Contact
I do not own the rights to it, BUY IT!!!
Just landed my first backflip followed by a 2nd and a 3rd all thanks to this video. Thank you dovicka, you've just helped me tick another thing off my bucket list!
Oh! And one more thing for most people who are still afraid of faceplanting. Please exercise! Develop your strength, flexibility, and balance. Work out with focus on your core and big muscles (torso and legs). When you get in shape appropriate for your biometrics, you will feel it, and it will be much easier to overcome the mental blockade that resulted from previous failed attempts.
Don't give up (even pros fail at times); practice these drills frequently and consistently; this will help you develop the proper technique and achieve proper dynamics. At that point, you will be able to control your momentum and do it slower and more laid-out on the trampoline, but faster and more compact on the ground.
Practice until you can! It's fun after all. :)
+Andre Kuzmicheff I am able to do a Backflip into water from aprox. 1 Meter height, and i also have done it with a second Person assisting me, but now, half a Year later i am not able to break the Mental blockade that stops me from doing the 'Up-and-turn' Movement... Its so Frustrating.. x-x Do you have any Tips for me? I know i am in the Condition to do it, but i still cant. :/
Practice, practice, practice! Do backward rolls (first drill in the video) on the floor right at home. Do it daily, 10 times in the morning and 10 times in the afternoon, and you will see that the tucking motion becomes natural. It will help you a great deal when flipping in the air. Have fun in the coming year!
Guys don't be scared. Backflips are one of the most fun skills I have ever done as a gymnast. Keep going and keep practicing and you'll get it eventually.
I’m definitely scared. Having a really hard time feeling confident enough to try it.
@@hopNglo have you done it?
@@Spectre2070yes, but only into foam pit. I’ve been doing back pull-overs on the trampoline. I feel like it could happen in a few more trampoline sessions
@@Spectre2070it’s taken me a very long time, but I’ve seen huge improvements in the month. I started watching ACONs trampoline series. It really helped me to advance more quickly…just seemed to be a tutorial that meant something to me.
@@hopNglo good luck man! i dont got anything of use in my town💀💀so im finna have to learn on the grass w matresses n shi
Thank you so much. I know everyone doesn't have a trampoline. But I do and this is one of the best tutorials I have found. I really liked the progressions, too.
It means that you are leaning back at the beginning and "trying harder" will only make you go back further.
The key is to focus on swooping your legs in an upward and slightly-forward direction as the driving force of the flip which allows you to keep your chest nearly straight up.
If you are doing them standing then going back up to 2 feet is okay but jumping on the trampoline you should be able to land in the same spot.
Thanks a lot for putting this vid out! They say that getting something done is largely getting to the point. Well, your tutorial does it best of all. :)
Glad you were born with far far above average strength and courage. Not many are blessed like that
Backdrops do require a large about of neck muscles, more if you keep your head off the trampoline but still LOTS if you let it rest on the trampoline too.
If your neck isn't strong enough you can strain your neck muscles or even get mild whip-lash.
Prescription? Take it easy and start low with the backdrops until your neck muscle's strength catches up to the rest of your muscles.
Excellent! Thank you. I’m working on the back drops onto the trampoline now. They are harder than they look and I bounce to the side instead of straight over…
why i tried to took backflip because i want to learn backflip 180 into fulltwist
this has helped me a lot as i do trampolining and not been able to master my back summie because i flip my head back thank you
What I have found with breaking muscle memory the best tactic is to change the skill enough that your mind can consider it a different skill than the currently flawed one. This tactic means the MORE flawed the skill, the MORE likely it is to work. Subtle flaws are harder.
This one is somewhat subtle but this is what I am doing to fix mine:
Change your BHS to a locked-arm BHS which is actually better in most cases.
This should do what I described, make it different enough to be a different skil
It all depends on how well you can do the drills. If the drills are easy to do so you can consider the drills "mastered" then you should find the safest place possible, with matts and a spotter and go for it.
If you do not have the drills mastered, all of them, don't try a backflip yet, just continue to work on the drills.
This is the best backflip tutorial out there
so im attempting to do it my first time in grass without spotter and cant get over the fear of that first flip 😨
Repeat the backflip off of 3 ft LOTS AND LOTS. If your legs and abs aren't sore the next day then it wasn't enough.
From then you can decrease the height as you gain strength which will depend on your body type but mainly how much you practice.
It could take 1-2 weeks, could be 6-8 weeks.
Good luck!
Im 12 years old and i can do it on trampoline and to a water. Can i do it on flat?
This was awesome thanks!
I dont have a trampoline but i try to do backflip on the bed, but i cant swing my hand.
What should i do ???
nice. this tutorial deserves even more likes. I think it's great.
Agreed
I taught myself a backflip since I was 7. I never felt the fear of going backwards. All you have to do is go into the position and DO IT! Its like doing a back role but in the air. But in detail, I started off with a backhand spring. Its not hard. If you have fear, block it out.
In the description there is a video which outlines the safest methods I could think of to learn a backflip without a trampoline, though using a trampoline is recommended as the safest method.
The principals are pretty similar from what I've seen of skiers flipping. There may be some changes to be done but I'd guess that knowing how to do one on the trampoline will make learning it on skis a lot easier. Make sure to ask a ski instructor for advice too though!
What you can do is
1: do backflips up onto something 6 inches or higher and just drill it again and again and onto heights up to 12 inches max.
2: Practice it on grass a bunch then go to a sprung floor. Same principal as #1
Either case it is just practice practice practice. Also note I naturally have a pretty high vertical jump so I didn't really have to wonrk on that.
That is the natural/easiest motion when doing a backwards roll called a shoulder roll.
Practice rocking from sitting to on your shoulders with both hands firmly on the ground beside your ears and head in. (watch the roll in the video carefully, you'll see me hit the position)
Practice getting your hands firmly on the ground rocking faster and faster then when you go to roll backwards do the same thing and you should go perfectly straight
This is actually a very good tutorial!!
I'm not sure that is nearly enough information to diagnose technique issues. 12 is not too young to learn a backflip but with a text description of the problem I can only guess on solutions. If you could describe which of the drills you have practiced and get video (ask a friend with a camera phone?) of a safe backflip attempt I would be happy to help you.
I assume that if you can already backflip on a trampoline then you can skip all the steps before it?
That is actually a VERY hard thing to fix. I worked for over a month trying to fix the same problem with a late-20s guy and we still haven't fixed it.
Really the only way is to overhaul the entire skill. If you are whipping your head back (very likely) then it should make it easier because you can make your "new backflip" different enough to not conflict with your muscle memory.
Practice the drills like you were just learning a backflip with a friend watching your technique vigilanty.
"please, don't rush anything"
Man.. if i had a tramp i wouldn't, but i don't really have a choice, imma try it on grass i think.
Lars van Koningsveld grass and a matrss
Lars van Koningsveld dutch?
Yeah i'm dutch
Lars van Koningsveld hhaha nice ik ook. ik d8 al met die naam kan je toch nii engels zijn.
Houd dat freerunnen erin, hartstikke cool joh!
This has become a common question so I mad an annotation about it in the video.
"Note: This is the SCARIEST step and you must find the safest and safest-feeling setting of spotter or matt or spotter+matt to get over the fear."
Thats what is says.
Well as you get strong and stronger you will land higher up and softer, while you develop the strength you should practice on a soft surface like a matt, a matress, soft grass or sand.
Good luck
breaking reflexes an hour or so to almost 100% break it.
Backflip on the trampoline w/ okay technique 20-40 minutes
Backflip on the trampoline w/ excellent technique 30-90 minutes
Backflip on the ground (hugely variable based on fitness) : 1-2 hour to 1-2 months
OMG was this video filmed in Vancouver phoenix gymnastics????
I keep trying to learn how to do backflips, frontflips, and everything, but I am scared because I have never been in any kind of a gymnastic class...Do you have any advice to help me become more flexible and learn how to do different things?
I've never heard of this. Does it happen when you do other things in sports?
You might want to ask a doctor or at the very least start with only VERY SMALL backdrops.
actually, you don't need a trampoline, you can jump that step, but it helps to learn how to do it. You can learn to do backflips just by being higher than the ground and trying to do it with someone to back you, to help you with your rotation, and to avoid injuries .
Eric Hiep, you are suppose to have your eyes open and see the ground to be able to know where and when to put your feet, to land properly
As long as you've practiced the drills very thoroughly then it should really quick.
Many people need to do 5-10 backflip with a spotter or with a soft matt, ie:something to ease the fear, before they can do it on their own on the trampoline
You can look up videos on how to spot a backflip for a friend to help you, though a gym would be MUCH safer.
Be safe, good luck!
How long will it take me to break the reflex of not wanting to fall backwards? I can frontflip fine but that relex is holding me back even though I've done the drills :/
Ive tried it but everytime is do a backdrop I get scared and hesitate because my trampoline is outside and everytime I look at the sky I get scared for some reason
I started it but then I started college and I don't anticipate working on it for a long while. There is a complete script of the would-be frontflip tutorial in one of my videos thought. check it out.
hmmm.. i train for few months already. However, my backflip remain the same height and same style. i can do backflip easily but i can't land it softly. Any exercise or drill should i practice to make my backflip higher? or is there any technique for me to spot my landing?
Can you help me?
1. I can do a backflip on trampoline and it is very easy
2.I can do a backflip off a table or a fence.
3. but when i try backflip on ground i fear too much and throw it over my shoulder without tucking .
and it is hard to me to keep my head straight on backflip
I love gymnastics!!
I land my backflips pretty well however when I land them i seem to land farther from where I started what can I do to stop it
The part when u said if u dont hav a incline mat then use flat ground but when ur doing it ur doing it front like a front roll if i keep doing it then its gonna
Thanks! I love the positive attitude in the video :) it helps
I have been doing all these drills for a while now but im still scared of doing it
Should i keep doing the drills untill im comfortable or what please answer
I can do it clean on the trampoline, without bouncing. But i still need a height of 3ft to jump off and land on the ground. Any tips please?
When doing the backflip on the ground how much of a lean do you have to do when you first jump in the air, I don't know whats too much or too little of a lean back
Dude I dont Have A trampoline To go For But I have Made A setup In which I jump from the bed on land on a mattress which is lower than the bed Is It Okay??? plzzz reply
Im going to try this maybe just the steps I won't do the backflip for a while
As long as the person spotting you is significantly bigger than you and you have some nice an squishy matts, it doesn't have to be a coach who spots you. (although it is much safer)
In Part 2 there is a link for a backflip spotting video.
I can land a backflip off a block but i'm 2 scared 2 do it on ground. What should i do?
I can't do true backwards roll I guess cause my right hand will never be able to do flat hand on ground cause metal plat in that wrist.
Thankyou i was able to finally able to learn it on a trampoline!
Even with a spotter im afraid to do it.. 4 months ago i started with all the drills (i could already do it standing on a trampoline) so every day i layed down a mattress on the grass and i just couldnt do it, now 4 months later i still cant get over the fear. I would like to try it into a pool or in a gym by a foampit but where i live nobody i know has got a pool and the nearest gym with mats and a foampit is 45 kilometres away... somebody help? :(
Ik tht feeling bro and i had the very same problem for about 8 months bro. I couldnt even do it on the trampoline! However even though learning a backflip in the gym, i can still offer you some tips to try and get it down.
Presuming that you can do a perfect backtuck then some of these tips could help you.
1: Depending on the thickness of your mattress, you could stand it up and jump and roll backwards over it. Something soft and thick would work to.
2: If you dont have that, then i would suggest trying to drill it on the trampoline. Now ik u have probs done that, but if u set the mattress down on the floor next to your trampoline, you could go by doing maybe 5 backflips standing on the trampoline then quickly going staright to the mattress. By stepping up to it and not thinking about it, u can sometimes eliminate a fear temporarily which will give you time to try and do it.
3: If none of this works, i would recommend that you actually crouch on your set. Go lower and lower until ur practically sitting. This can help eliminate the fear on the ground because it gets u used to less hight.
Im not sure if these are helpful but i taught my friend a backflip doing these very same techniques. Also remember that the Backflip is easier off of heights, but its useally more scary to go for it. So when you get the balls to try it flat and if you dont land it, go for it off of a height. By landing it, you will gain alot of confidence and by getting that, you will put more power into it which will make you land it flat :)
Hope this helped!
Thanks man! I will definetly try that. :)
Mees Vonk :)
I'm in the same boat. I live in Arizona and all of the gyms I've talked to thus far only work with kids. I have a lot of flexibility and strength, and I'm willing to learn and train, but there's no one around to train me.
kungfuman82 Exactly. So annoying :/
I'm trying to practice back flips so I can do them on skis. Do you have any advice dovicka?
I tried this stuff a lot before we sold our trampoline while we were moving but I just flipped out at the last moment. I was able to teach myself a back handspring with someone spotting me. I need some tips on how to get over my fear and how to do it withthout a trampoline. Btw I'm only 11. THX!
Thank you for the backflip encouragement
I can do a back drop, but i'm still afraid to do a back tuck D: what can i do?? please
Sorry I missed this response.
Please don't just try to throw a backflip. That is an extremely dangerous thing to do because your body will flail involuntarily and very dangerously.
I am making a video that has drills that can be done without a trampoline to do a backflip and I'm making it as fast as I can with my busy scheduled.
In the meantime DON'T JUST TRY TO DO IT!
There may be some issue with your technique that may require more than just practicing again and again but it would be impossible to tell without a video.
This was a very, very, very good tutorial. I especially loved the:
'standing backflip on the ground'... "this skill emulates the standing backflip on the ground
hahaha
I don't tuck when i do them on trampolines.. Will this affect my flat ground backflips?
Do you have REALLY good backdrops and back pullovers. You need to be very comfortable doing those drills jumping really high.
If you do then I'd recommend putting a bunch of pillows or something behind you so it makes it less scary then do it WITH CONFIDENCE.
BE SAFE though!
bro as you said that its very difficult to correct your muscle memory...m also facing this problem.my backhandspring is always tilted towards right side.i can do back tuck, roundoff back tuck but this thing is difficult.please help.
how long would it take to fully learn the drills ? breaking reflexes
Can you practice on snow ??????
it is called a standing back salto actually but non-gymnasts identify with the term backflip more than salto and I said backflip as a kid too so I chose to go with "backflip" for the video :D
ok.. i will try and upload a video of me doing backflip as soon as possible. hope u can help me to correct it.. thx
Sounds fun. I'll get started right on it.
I am sorry. Is land.. How can i land a backflip softly? when i do my backflip i land very hard. Any tips for it?
I've given up on trying to do this, I can't get over the fear of breaking my neck no matter _ANYTHING_ I do or try to do. Honestly, it's pitiful.
i have sent a vid response, apart from jumping back not up, i realise this. but can you tell me what im doing right AND wrong please im getting better and am starting to jump up more in the ones i was doing today :) thankyou
Check out the non-trampoline guide I made, it is in the description.
GOOD LUCK!
but.. where do i get all these things in 5 minutes?
+sungexit y As he said in the Start of the Video, you wont be able to do a Backflip in 5 Mins, he just explains the Steps to you in 5 Min... Didnt you watch the Video? o.0
+Lasse Schacht ohhh yeah i didnt get that part xd
:D
I always seem to find that the backdrops hurt my neck a lot. Any tips? :)
with the backflip on the groud i practiced with a mat, i din't think that it would lower my jumping height so i landed face first and threw my neck out. this happened 3 times before i realised i had to go find a gym to use more safe equipment. the worst part remains the fear of faceplanting on the ground...
Don't 'whip' backwards. Always look straight ahead and keep your back straight. You'll never land on your head if you follow that. Jump *up*, not backwards.
Phaneron will try that next time
INSAN3DRAGON Whipping backwards is fine during a back handspring, just not a back flip.
Feel like im doing front flips not backflips would it still help me doing a front flip even doe im doing front rolls plzzz help thanks
i can do backflip on water but when i tried to do it on a trampoline i was too scared to try
well i can do it even on tramp, into water, once i had opportunity to foam pit... but (even from height) on the ground its impossible for me ... :(
Foam pit is the intermediate step. If you know the technique, only fear is holding you back! Learn the macaco. That's what helped me get the backflip.
Congrats Jesus.
i can go a backflip on trampoline and a bouncy castle but not ground im way to scared help me!!!
you should only do a back flip if and only if you fell confident don't force it you will know when you can do a back flip on ground but make sure you are fit in the core and legs then you will do this like a boss and keep watching videos on backflips so your mind will understand what you want to do so when you are at home and have nothing to do watch a video on a back flip
@dovicka So, jumping affect on how we spin. Can you tell me, how should I train to increase my jumping power.
Do you wear support for your junk? I'd imagine you need it for this maneuver right?
Thanks a lot these drills really help.
im really trying to master the backfilp i dont have any access to a gymnastics coaches to help me i really really ned a spotter to help me pls pls help me out here
I love the first two trampoline drills! Very helpful :-)
lol just yesterday i was scared, then i kinda went back sideways and just landed on my belly, and then just keep getting more and more straighter when you get used to going crooked, and when i just leave the ground before i flip i give it all ive got because you have to keep spinning or you are going to break your neck, also try doing back drops than instead of flipping back up go backwards on to your head...but yeah i throw my arms back and kick up and im landing on my feet most the time.
I dont have acces to a gym, how can I train backflip?
I need tips on landing my backflips with my chest up like you and need to get more height.
Where do I go to use a trampoline?
I once did backflips and I know I still can it, but my head always sais no and i get scared :(
You should definately work up to it. It take a lot more strength to do a backflip than to do a backwards roll on flat ground.
would it help me do a backflip even do im doing front rolls*
problem: what do i do if I can’t even force myself to do a back pullover?
Dozens of backwards rolls, faster and faster, possibly with a little bit of jumping into them. (careful of neck strain!)
Also proficiency with bouncing on your back is quite important, being able to bounce 20+ times on your back only will help you get in touch with the rhythm of boucing that needs to be precisely controlled in a back pullover.
Adam Dovick thank you so much for the advice! this video has helped me a lot, it really boosted my confidence. I Will work on my back pullover. Thanks loads!
thanks, it´s very usefull, i spect to find the apropiate place to practice it and achive it :)
I try practicing on the puck Flip and I'm from Egypt, we are trying to imitate you, but I do not have the resources and we do not have the encouragement and despite this we can do Philp puck on the turf and do not be afraid, and the dream of my life that I am training in a hall like this
I broke my arm doing the back pullover. I wasn't doing it to learn my tuck but I did one and went to high and stopped rotating.. Now I have a metal plate in my arm haha
@dovicka hi I'm 12 years old and I need help doing a backflip first I do it on a matters I jump I then Idk everytime I try to backflip I land on my back I dont even rotate plzz help I can almost do a front flip but I land on my back r my butt I'm learning everyday but a black lip is da hardest and on a mattress I can do a side flip but I can do it on ds floor but plzz help with da backflip
