I think conquest sales in this segment are going to be inevitable. It's clear with the Z6III that Nikon has its mojo back; that it's a trajectory, not a blip.
The thing about N-RAW-if you use the Davinci Resolve Color Managed workflow-is the fixability of basic settings such as the white balance and probably more important tint during post. If you have time to do a color card check and/or have a really good eye for such things on the fly (and always remember to adjust your white point during every change of setting and gradually through out the day), then baked in formats are a bit quicker. But the faster you have to work in a given video situation, the more valuable it is to have the flexibility of a compressed RAW format such as N-RAW or BRAW. ProResRAW??? That’s a different kettle of fish because the file sizes and bit rates balloon tremendously, but now that 1TB CFExpress cards are less money than 512GB SD cards, storage isn’t as much the issue any longer.
Hugh, first of all your shot of the Hasidic gentlemen is OUTSTANDING! And a little envy here, since I have wanted to create a thoughtful and meaningful collection of the cultural norms of the Hasidic groups across the country, but can never get close enough to start. Secondly, I want to mention that you are my "go to" for reporting on camera gear. You've never failed me and this preview bears no exception. I will not pre order until you've had a chance for a thorough review. My Fujifilm X-H2S will continue running my event shooting for now. The Zf is my back up (I could actually reverse that) though the muscle memory is at times, daunting. Lastly, thank you for mentioning the depth of field preview issue on the Zf. I had NO idea this was a real issue and thought it was just me! I do a lot of low light shooting sometimes and it was maddening. Thanks! Keep on keeping on... I love your videos!
Panasonic FanBoy / User here. I think that the Z6 III having internal N-RAW is a good thing... even for low-budget run-and-gun video shooters. Yes, it means that you HAVE to do some basic color grading. But if you are a run-and-gun shooter, you usually have little to no control of lighting. So shooting in RAW gives you the flexibility to deal with tricky mixed lighting situations, or if you accidentally used the wrong white balance if you were in a rush (not that that has ever happened to me... cough... cough). I mean, it is kind of like shooting stills in jpgs vs in RAW. You can certainly get great jpg photos straight out of camera, but in tricky situations, RAW can be a life saver. Now just a brain dump: I might switch from Panasonic (S1 and S5 Original) to the Z6 III. Aside from the aforementioned N-RAW (which is great for us DaVinci Resolve users), the 4K 60p in full frame appeals to me, as does the faster readout / less rolling shutter. Hopefully the various picture profiles of the Z6 III has less noise reduction / oversharpened edge details that palgue the S5 II. The other things I would really like to know about are things like the image quality of the 1080p footage at 120fps, howwell the AF works at those higher frame rates, hdmi lag (the Panasonic S-series cameras have pretty bad HDMI lag, which makes manual focusing more of a chore), does it have waveforms / false color? Or just those crazy zebra levels from previous Z cameras? I wonder if it has )or will have) the ability to record to an SSD, or using the USB-C port, have the ability to record timecode in (I know that Sony's a7 III got that ability throughthe multifunction port if one purchases a specific Sony-made cable).
It's wiser to just pick the camera company with the philosophy closest to yours. Every model and every lens involves compromises, and there has been a lot of consistency for each company in what compromises they make. I went into the Nikon system with the Nikon ZF using that same mindset.
That saying is not based on anything other than vain imagination of pride admiring the pseudo-poetry of self-utterance rather than finding what's true and repeating that. Love Nikon, but hate unwise-wisdom spewed as anything more than what it is.
@@rolandgibbs9036you deserve to gloat. I have been in the same boat . Even though I shoot just as good as my friends with FX3’s and ZV-E1’s ( and also being the one who taught them how to shoot) they still clown me for using a Z6. It is our turn to GLAOT !!!!
@@johndoe-bt3ou Thanks JD. TBH I've shot everything from Pentax Auto 110 and Kodak Brownie to Sinar P2, Always default to Nikon tho for most things especially nowadays. D5100 was a lowpoint tho.
Hey there, i just traded my Zf in for the Z6iii for the better ergonomics. But… though i am not a big video guy, i just need an all a rounder camera for wildlife (flying, running, and stills) and for landscape. I am not a professional, but i like good quality images so i can print and post on social media. Will this Z6iii (even though so many people say DR is bad) would it be good for a wildlife, nature, landscape camera? I don’t have a big budget, just want a camera that is great for what i do.
Z6iii features look great for this camera. I moved from Z9 to Z8 due to weight but even with Z8 and 70-200 is getting too heavy for me. I may need to get Z6iii for size and features.
Just get the cheaper and lighter 70-180/2.8. It’s 795g vs 1360g on 70-200 That’s 565g difference. Z8 v Z6iii is about 200g difference. Maybe drop the Z9 as it’s needlessly heavy and the Z6iii and 70-180 Get $3500 cash back and 1000g lighter probably! 😂🤷♂️
I think you’re at the point where you should choose just one mount and stick with it, but you have to be clear about what you do and don’t need; why; and what the financial repercussions will be.
Always well articulated! One question Nikon….this is a great upgrade from the 6ll, but what is your opinion on the release of the replacement of the D500?
Wow! Hugh wonderful job. Just what I wanted to know. I have a Z6II, Zf and Z8. I love them all for different reasons. The Z6III would it seems finally put to bed the remaining Nikon autofocus deficiencies, includes an improved EV and flippy screen. I will be keeping my powder dry of these improvements in a 45 megapixel Z8II.
Without wishing to start any kind of beef, may I ask this...I had a Nikon D90 from 2009-2015. I now use a Canon EOS 5D Mk4. Despite the higher resolution and full frame goodness, when I look back at the old files from the D90, there's a beautiful certain something to them that I can't put my finger on, but it's got me thinking thoughts. Any ideas?
Love the channel Hugh. Im too old school to try and keep up with the latest gear, but it is very interesting to see the latest and greatest. I still shoot my old D4s for digital and a lot of film in medium format. Keep up the great work.
with the z8 on summer sale it makes the z8 a better buy as in DX you get 19mp on the x8 vs the z6iii's 10 mp and the 6iii is not cheap and I think the z8 captures more detail than the 6iii I still have to test it but I can see who the 6iii is for but for me I'm upgrading to the z8 from what I have shared
I have been waiting for this Camera, I started buying S lenses but wanted to see if the new gen Zs was better than the 2nd generation Z6 and Z7. I'd love a Z8 but dont want to spend that much.
You make it clear that this is a video camera first, stills camera second. Why is no one, with the exception of unaffordable cameras from Leica and Hasselblad, making cameras focused on stills shooters? I recently sold my GFX gear, too big and heavy now at my age, and am shooting with a Fuji X-T5, which is good but quite a step backwards in image quality from the GFX. I'm considering switching brands but to what? I tried a Sony A7R V and found it unpleasant to use, a computer to which one can attach lenses. I was hoping that the Z6III would be the one, but it's clearly not. Will the Z7III be better or will it too be a video camera first, with photography a distant afterthought? The Japanese manufacturers all seem to think that every one wants to shoot professional quality video, when some of us don't shoot video at all!
It looks like the partial stacked sensor has the added circuit layer to speed up video, but lacking it for stills. This shows in the slow electronic flash sync speed at 1/60 which gives you a readout speed of approx. 16ms @ 24Mpx for stills.
You make an excellent point, most camera manufacturers get their sensors from Sony. Not sure how this happened but, it is what it is. What I don't understand is why the custom dial is on the left side, not ideal if you need to switch modes in a hurry.
Thank you for another fine introduction/commentary on the new Nikon Z6 III. I found as always very interesting to hear your prospective. I’m really just a stills shooter and enjoy better resolution but find the camera interesting. Not exactly in my wheel house but find several features interesting. Do though hope they will consider creating a smaller body like my A7CR and A7CII from Sony. I enjoy having both compact and full size bodies that share the same sensor like the A7RV and A7CR or A7IV and A7CII but that’s me. Take care.
10:10 Absolutely correct. And the professionals who really want to shoot raw can use an external recorder. I tried editing with it once, and it was more a PITA than I needed. I'd be happy enough with H.265 10-bit at the same bit rate as the H.264 equivalent.
I’m enjoying my z5 the 6iii would be nice due to its video. Could never pull a trigger on the Sony or the Cannon due to Nikons ergonomics there is just something very very right about it. Pretty please Nikon have now caught up and possibly even slightly ahead
Enjoyed the review very much and it looks like I'll be bringing the Z6III into the family (will I let go of the Z6II ?). I like the music you had in the background for street shots. - what was it ? Also, as you were going through the various specifications, there was a moment when it sounded the side of effects of some medication being advertised on TV (is that a side gif of yours ??). Also enjoy the videos.
100% agree with your comments about raw and high iso. For most of us a high data codex like internal prores HQ is way more than we could hope for or actually need. If you can white balance and expose correctly you dont need raw for 99.999% of anything. High iso performance is more for tech sheet warriors, and pixel peepers, there's not enough difference between todays high end FF cameras to bother anyone who actually shoots stuff. Its great to see Nikon bouncing back with another worthy camera that can compete with the best out there. The Z9, Z8 and now the Z6iii show how Nikon has learnt and listened to what the customers want.
As a Nikon shooter i have some questions, what about other cameras like z5ii or z7iii or z50ii? I have z50 and waited for professional cropped Nikon sensor camera for too long. So now im switching to z7ii to use my cropped viltrox 1.2 lenses on a full frame body. Expeed 7 cameras are a breakthrough inside the brand, but not the market. And this is concerning me, as Nikon catches up with a 2 year old cameras from the other brands (like A7m4 and R6m2). I really like the system, but im kinda tired of the feeling staying behind. Thanks for your another video by the way, Hugh
I don’t think you should hold your breath too long for a pro level crop-sensor camera. The market has already established full frame as the industry standard. Also for years now these models had only incremental improvements. It’s not like the A7m4 and R6m2 are perfect. The next versions will be a bit better and then the next Nikon will be a bit better.
You are the voice of reason - very good points raised! The Camera Conspiracies guy Kasey recently did a nice review of the Z6iii with a Z 600mm 6.3 prime, shooting some local wildlife.
The Z8 having 8k and twice the megapixels is worth the money difference. IN addition to a fully stacked sensor and a probably much faster shooting rate.
Howdy, I love the channel. It’s classy. I must mention that I know quite a few videographers that shoot in nothing but RAW. I’ve used it since the Z2 with the Ninja V. I love it. I see a big improvement over h.624/625. Just a week ago I shot an interview where I had mistakenly left my CF card at the office. I shot with the SD card that can’t handle RAW. Oh, I was shooting with a Z8. I’d forget the difference until I got back the edit. The RAW has better colors, dynamic range and it’s just got better wiggle room.
Reinforces what an absolute disgrace it was when Northrup, Angry Photographer, Polin and others were slating Nikon and gleefully predicting the company's imminent demise a few years ago.
"Don't listen to idiots" as my mother used to warn me 60 years ago. Still valid today, especially today. I am not one to switch brands or models very often, as witnessed by my main two cameras are a Z6 original and D850 and use the original Z6 for 90% of my paid work but 18 F mount top grade lenses on either are not as the results from the 7 Z mount lenses. Ignoring video for the point, clients are very happy with the results with the Z6 and 85 1.2 or even 1.8 plus the advantage of having a superb stylist and MUA I do videos also but more of video intros in actor portfolios. that turn out well but a few hours ago there was a youtube video using the Z6 lll that even with the limitations of RUclips and my laptop, the color and impact of scenes in a forest jumps out from screen as the best looking sequence I have ever seen on this laptop let alone the RUclips smashing bandwidth. If the video intros by actor clients could look 1/2 as good if I got the Z6 lll, I am in. This prerelease has probable breaking records for pre-orders. I think the largest backlog as for the very solid D800, which I was lucky and got one in short 4 day window when the big retailers like B&H were quoting 6-8 months. I was back in my native USA for only 4 days and not likely to be back in 3-4 years and got one. I still have it and it is still a good portrait camera.
I am most interested in the compromises on image quality, specifically dynamic range as it pertains to having a partially stacked sensor. I noticed z8 with a higher pixel resolution and fully stacked sensor has little compromise to dynamic range. That’s crucial. Everything else looks good. 32 float audio would be the icing on the cake.
Hello Claudia and Hugh! The is obviously a very video-centric camera, and I don’t shoot any video. For a passionate amateur photographer, would you recommend a Z7II, or the new Z6iii. I would love the Z8, but it is far too much camera for my needs, and too expensive.
Hey, Broch! If you don’t need the resolution, autofocus for stills alone may be reason enough to go Z6 III. But Claudia loved her Z7 II as you may recall. Although she has since migrated to a Sony a7C R for much of what she does, a Leica SL3 for the rest!
I don't know how you do it sir, but your delivery is riveting. As an original Z6 owner that have been considering the Zf as an upgrade I am certainly interested in what you have to say about the Z6 3 but that seems ancillary to the amazing delivery of your monologue.
I bought both Z6iii and Z8 and I must say Z8 is worth the price difference! It’s a hefty camera that instills confidence in me capturing what needs to be captured! I don’t get the same feeling with Z6iii. The AF feels better and the electronic shutter is much appreciated by me personally! I shoot handheld 3 image brackets with 2 or 3 stops Ev between the shots. Electronic shutter introduces zero shake and I get almost 100% success rate in alignment with shutter speeds as low as 1/15 sec on bright exposures! It eliminates the need for a tripod in real estate photography! The controls on Z8 make changing settings a breeze and I don’t visit the menus while on Z6iii I end up going into menus more than I should. So, in terms of user experience and the beautiful 45MP photos you get, it’s just the camera I rather pick up with confidence! As Omar Gonzales said in his comparison, Z6iii is tool to do professional work and you won’t have any feelings about it! Z8 on the other hand takes me back to the feeling I had holding D700 back in the day! Filled with confidence that this beat of a camera will handle anything life throws at it! ❤💪
A trade in and taking loss on 4 month old ZF + 24-70 f/4 kit (added the 28-75 2.8 Z anyway) for Z6iii is tempting. AFS 24-70 2.8 G adapted on Zf is very awkward, amongst some F mount zooms. Gain joystick , top display, keep a flippy screen, get a batter sensor and just lose the bw switch on top.
I own both the Nikon Z system and the Fuji X system. I shoot a lot in the dark theaters and I prefer the 24 megapixel full frame sensors. The Z6II was a very good camera (for stills) but it wasn't quite there yet for my needs. The Z6III looks very promising and a big improvement over the Z6II, but I still need a quiet mechanical shutter like the Fuji cameras do. My Z9 is way more than I need and its 45 megapixel shows noise at iso 3200, whereas my Z6II was clean at iso 6400. The electronic shutter on the Z9 with the stacked sensor works quite well in the theater, except for some annoying banding issues (another plus for the Fuji). This main issue for me is the mechanical shutter of the Z6III quiet enough not to disturb the audience in the theaters. The Z6III is beautiful camera at a reasonable price. The Z6III would be a no-brainer for me except for the shutter noise issue.
I love the way you analyze Photography. Question i will be going to Italy and Athens end of next month would you recomand Sony a7iii Alpha for quality Pictures and videos, i will realy appreciate your recomm endation Best regard Hermiz Albazi
Even today the a7 III is still an excellent camera. I don't know what or how you shoot, your priorities or budget, so I really can't say more than that. In any event, ENJOY!
@@3BMEPI agree. I have been using the a7iii for the past 5 years. It was a great camera when I bought it and it hasn’t deteriorated since then! I get great photos and videos out of it. My only regret is the lack of animal eye autofocus. Otherwise, it’s still great.
Raw will increase latitude and color information (always welcome for any creator/videographer), and it is compressed RAW! The normal (not high) RAW mode on my Z8 is only slightly higher bitrate than ProRes LT, and with a near negligible quality difference to the high mode. Meaning, it's far more accessible than portrayed in this video. CFexpress B cards are also getting cheaper. I bought an Angelbird 1TB for $200, very recently.
Apparently, Sony made a special deal with Nikon to create the semi stacked sensor, and so that massive company is making out just fine, regardless. The Z6III is a great value, as was the Z8 before it. I would be shocked if it is not Nikon’s most popular Full Frame camera. However, I am not a hybrid shooter, nor do I need sprinter fast autofocus, so both cameras have a lot of tech which I will never use. I love my Z7II for landscapes, paired with the Nikkor f4 zooms and the 100-400 Z zoom. I bought a Zf six months ago, and I absolutely love it paired with small primes of all sorts, MF and AF. Its autofocus is plenty fast enough. Plus, the thing looks beautiful too! Will I buy the Z6III….maybe some day…down the road, on deep discount, or when the next big thing is going to replace it, but definitely not on preorder.
410 glue method of old 24 million CMOS and D610 D750 image quality is no different Z63 like a fly ~ Non-native stack brings huge cost increase, in fact, it is just flying wire ~ You need to worry about power and overheating caused by glue aging CMOS glass fogging
These digital cameras cameras are great. But I would love to see one of these companies bring out a newer film camera that isn’t 6 grands like Leicas. And yes it’s because I’m on a film kick right now because I got my hands on a Nikon F3.
There's no real need for film cameras to use bleeding-edge technology. If you want "better" images from your film, talk to the few remaining film manufacturers.
@@paulmckenna5224 yeah absolutely correct, other than the light meter effectiveness, your film is what matters since it's the "sensor" of a film camera.
The first youtuber I checked for the z6iii. On a semi related note I’ve been trying to find comparisons or someone speaking about the 1.8 S lenses vs the summicrons and finally got it on this video. It now made me even more curious regarding the Leica glass 😂
You have by far the best music on you tube, so much of that electronic synth bubble gum squeeling nonsense is played by so many people, its incredibly annoying. I generally prefer no music but yours is nice. If only others used similar.
Huge, regarding raw from shooters sharing their content via Internet. MKHBD does shoot using RED cameras fr sharing their video on RUclips. What do you say of this?
Does he still shoot with the RED for RUclips? In any case I know he’s been using an iPhone exclusively for his car reviews; he has staff and budget that most RUclipsrs don’t; and I don’t believe he is as successful as he is because of color grading or white balance deficiencies he successfully addresses by shooting RED. But hey - what do I know? 😊🖖🏻
With the Z9, 8 in hand the this camera rounds out capability for whatever I may be lead to do or even use my Red Komodo for photography on occasion. Reality is I’m stuck in the laboratory and photography is my break from the white lab coat.
Hi Hugh. The Z6 III sounds like a great camera. Many people will be very happy with it. At the end you talk briefly about what I call the 'fetish for specs'. Modern cameras are generally really terrific even if they don't have the latest 'killer' properties. For example I took my Fuji XE4 to Stourgate a National Trust property in the UK. I didn't have any lights. There is a grotto there with classical statues, pretty much in the dark. I shot some pictures at ISO 12800. The EVF and screen were blank. In Light Room I moved a few sliders and got a terribly pixelated image. Then I used Adobe Noise Reduction. I got a very useable image that needed a few minutes to remove remaining artefacts. I know this is a bit off topic regarding the Z6 III. The point I am making is about the pursuit of technological progress by manufacturers, which whilst great for the company bottom line and for photographers, does in some way(s) diverts attention from the tools we already have. Great episode as always.
I was just about to purchase an S5ii recently and decided to wait to see this camera. Would you say this camera is worth the extra dollars for the specs it provides over the S5ii? The Z6iii will be $3400.00 (body only) here in Canada. Currently I can get an S5ii with two kit lenses for $3000.00
Can you speak to the dynamic range of the z6iii? It's all anyone is talking about right now online. Apparently the Z6iii was far worse DR than the z6ii, not to mention 10 year old DSLRs like the d750.
@@3BMEP it looks like Nikon traded image quality for speed. Unless you are a sports photographer, or maybe a bird photographer, that seems like a disappointing trade off. Facebook is full of people complaining about noise in their photos and flicker in their videos. I would say this launch has not gone well for Nikon. It's very disappointing because I've been holding out for this camera forever.
There's a lot of things to love but lets be real here... The A7S3 is 4 years old and this new Nikon is essentially just matching it, minus the 6K 60 raw. The slow motion is the same. N RAW is outdated and lacking in dynamic range and the no redundant recording option is a dealbreaker right off the bat. BUT it is def a step in the right direction and for any new buyer that isn't locked into a system, this is a fantastic camera. 6K 60 is amazing but I think you're limited to NRAW.
In the past, it was really hard to recommend a well-rounded mid range camera on the Nikon lineup. Zf was too niche. The z6iii does hit all the check boxes. Well done Nikon! Thanks a ton Hugh! I now have an array of thoughts held I'm a table to look up to 😂
Alas, it's great that the Z6III has finally addressed the autofocus issues. I was an early adopter (and defender) of the Z6, which I thought was a great camera in many respects. Nevertheless, I eventually gave up because the autofocus was unreliable. I sold all my Nikon gear and moved to Sony, at an expected loss. While I love the results from Sony, the Nikon was a much more enjoyable camera to use. As wonderful as the Z6III may be, I just can't afford to make another move back to Nikon.
Thank Hugh for this INFORMATIVE review. There are 2 STRANGE things though. First, there is no footage of any testing video! You talk about the video advantages of this camera but nothing is shown to back that up. Second this video is in BLACK & WHITE from the beginning till the end. And that cuts its convincing ability by half. I need to see most of the photos in color to compare them to those taken by other camera brands.
Not so strange: a) I only had it for two hours and I prioritized my own use case (street photography); b) this doesn’t prevent me from basic reasoning and prior experience; and c) there is one color photograph in the montage. 😊🖖🏻
the Nikon Z6III is pretty much everything i hoped the Sony A7IV would be. i never understood why Sony went for a higher MP sensor, and approved for every compromise that came due to it, instead of keeping a 24 MP resolution and improving every other feature. just waiting now to see what the A7V may bring.
@@3BMEP I have been debating the Sony A7 IV, A7Cii and the z6 III largely for recording my son's hockey games and some casual amateur photography. The 4K60 crop kinda pushed be to Nikon...but im still on the fence. I wondred if full frame 4K60 will produce better low light image over Sony in crop
@@3BMEP pretty sure I’m going Z6 III. A7CII is appealing because of size for travel. But the Nikon is a beast for roughly the same cost (in Canada). Off to Europe for a family trip. Will probably grab the 35mm 1.8 as well. Have to figure out what lense to shoot ice hockey with next
So many features, numbers keep rolling of your tongue Hugh, I am impressed by your grasp of all the features. The bottom line has to be does it make anyone a better photographer. Well done but who are the three blind men and where is the elephant?
And here's me, happily shooting almost all my commercial wildlife work on a pair of D500's and a D5. On my off time, my medium format and large format analog cameras are my best friends. Soon people will no longer have to think because the new cameras do everything for them. Exposure? What gives, hit whatever setting and correct in post. Wait for good light? Nah, just hit HDR and apply filters in post. Any need to determine where to focus? Nope, the algorithms will do that for you too. Ask some of the up and coming "pros" some very basic questions about actual photography and they haven't got a clue. Yes, some create stunning images, but one could venture a guess at how much of it is photography and how much of it is "digital art" or post processing. I've played with the Z6iii and while it's incredible to see what a camera can do these days, I do not care about video and in terms of stills, it does not do anything for me that my aging slr's can't do well enough. Now consider this, the Leica SL2 and SL2-s are now on sale in various shops, which, in Europe, means you can snag either one for less than a Z6iii. Perhaps it's just me, but the Nikon feels like a cheap toy in comparison. And sure, it may create "superior" images for many, particularly those who rely on everything auto and HDR, but nah, I reckon that most of the tech inside is surplus to requirements for almost anyone. Although of course we all need to get ridiculous frame rates to rattle off 50 shots of every scene (where in reality, the Nikon F5 and F6 with grip, already offered the speed anyone but perhaps F1 or areal acrobatics photographers would ever need). End of rant.
Finally, Nikon fills a market segment where previous models were not competitive against the competition. But is it too late? In recent years, many photographers and photo enthusiasts have chosen to abandon the brand in favor of Sony, Canon, and Fuji. It's evident that since the production of mirrorless cameras began, Nikon has fallen behind. The new Nikon Z6 III seems to be an excellent camera on paper. Personally, I've always used Nikon, with their extraordinary DSLRs. I've also worked with the Nikon Z6 II professionally, but I found it unreliable for eye detection autofocus, etc. Consequently, I switched to Sony and, staying in the same segment, I find the Sony 7 IV exceptional. Moreover, Sony's lens lineup is very extensive. Despite Nikon's high-quality build, viewfinder, and display, I won't go back. I think too much importance is given to technology. Personally, what I look for in a professional camera is reliable autofocus, quality, and feel. With Sony, for years, I've been able to get what I had with Nikon DSLRs. I still hope that Nikon achieves the success it deserves with this new camera, but I think the competition is very fierce and that it's difficult for those who have switched to other brands to decide to go back, especially for economic reasons.
Internal raw doesn’t make it better than both Sony’s. The Z6iii is a camera slapped with a bunch of tech but not enough to switch system for most people. The fact it can’t record to both card slots while recording video is a no go.
1:18 The US price tag of $2,500 is fair. But in Europe, the camera costs FAR more. Retails for 3,000 euros, which is about $3,200. Completely unacceptable.
@@stanspb763i can drive 20 minutes and buy in Delaware with no sales tax. I understand there are ways for people in any state to buy online from Delaware shops and not have the sales tax collected.
One wonders if a Z73 is even in the cards at this point. There might not be much daylight between the Z63 and the Z8. Just from a business POV, it’s hard to see a case.
the kicker is -they are all sony .....nikon uses sony sensors -nikon is a lesser version of sony now -change my mind ..... ive used only nikon and pretty sure ill be switching -i feel like u cant beat the internal noise reduction processing that makes the photos look hyper realistic
A7IV is about two years old, A7V will be announced in some months - the AF of A7CII ist already better and A7V will improve further. I am doing seldom fast sports, or wildlife, so no need for a fast camera like the Z6III.
Anyone else feel like saying nah I’ll pass … simply buy the new Leica Dlux 8 and take a nice vacation😅? Still… I like hearing Hugh’s take on the whole industry
I have just sold my Z7ii, but I still own the ZF. I have been waiting for the Z7iii for nearly 4 years. However the release of this Z6iii tells me that the body is bigger and heavier. The lack small stubby primes, even after 18 months since the release of the ZF. The inabilty to assign minimum shutter speed to a button which has become a severe irritation when in apature priority. With no guarantees there will ever be a high resolution Z7iii if it comes to fruition, it will be in the same body as this new Z6iii. Heavier body. With an incresingly bad back, I want a lighter camera body. I also now shoot mainly primes Nikon 28mm and 40mm. These lenses are plastic mounts, so poor. I don't shoot video, just landscape photography. I am going to move to Sony. With such a choice of G and G master primes and zoom lenses. The A7RC and A7RV with be my cameras of choice going forward. I would agree the Nikon F1.8 primes are good, but they are heavy and rather large. My other big irritation with the Z7ii is you can shoot in a crop mode, but you do not get the full sensor read out in post. Shoot in square, that is what you get, no changing your mind. Even my old Fuji XT2 didn't do that. I beleive this has been solved in the Z8. So why can the firmware not apply this to other bodies. Surley this is not lack of processing power. The 24mm F1.2 GM, 40mm F2.5 G, Sigma 90mm F2.8 DG DN I prime lenses. For very inclement days in the UK, 16-25mm F2.8 G, 24-50mm F2.8 G and 20-70mm F4 G lenses. Nikon have nothing to match this in their line up. To conclude Nikon have now told me it is time to jump ship. Sad as I have a lovley collection of images on my walls as prints, but I need a lighter set up. Thank you Hugh for your thoughts, interested to see your full review.
Just a small note: it’s so refreshing to have a photographer insert big band jazz for the photo session rather than that annoying ethereal crap the “photographer” RUclipsrs ALWAYS play.
Hugh All Nikon Needed was time after over 100 yrs in SLR or DSLR!! It was always premature & click bait to declare Nikon Dead!!! Great review sir Great Insight Great Job!!
Why, oh why, with the tilty-flippy screen?!?! I was so hoping that this would be a photo-centric camera. I guess that I'll have to keep waiting to see what else they release in the 1500-2500 range.
You're welcome! I had to separate out my other comment because strangely, the comment I wrote with this never posted. Maybe it's user error but my comments are there separately.
I’m not interested in the camera-I just enjoy listening to Hugh Brownstone talking about gear, because he’s intelligent. Cheers!
He would have a future in ASMR or voiceovers for sure 😀

@@jimstirling7223 totally! He’s a smooth operator.
Hold that though 🤧
Hugh is Incredible! Love his reviews and analysis!
So happy to be of service, Juliette! 😊🖖🏻
Yeah. You couldn't just walk up to them and start taking pictures. That wouldn't be Kosher......I'll see myself out.
Thanks for sharing!
Think you can timecode with an Atomos Sync over bluetooth …
I never switched from Nikon, never believed the end of the world prophets telling Nikon would die
Something i never thought I'd say... I think I'm switching to Nikon!
I understand. 😊
You'll switch to Nikon, then when brand 2 ups them you'll switch to them, then when brand 3 ups them you'll switch to them, and so on.
It's wiser to just pick the camera company with the philosophy closest to yours. Every model and every lens involves compromises, and there has been a lot of consistency for each company in what compromises they make. I went into the Nikon system with the Nikon ZF using that same mindset.
@@CarthodonI still don't understand why Zf has a lower shutter life rating! Why!

It’s 795g vs 1360g on 70-200
That’s 565g difference.
Z8 v Z6iii is about 200g difference.
Maybe drop the Z9 as it’s needlessly heavy and the Z6iii and 70-180
Get $3500 cash back and 1000g lighter probably! 😂🤷♂️
So, is it worth selling the A7s3 for the Z6III? I already have a Z8, but still own FX30 and A7s3 as well.
I think you’re at the point where you should choose just one mount and stick with it, but you have to be clear about what you do and don’t need; why; and what the financial repercussions will be.
Just get Nikon z6 and keep all your other cameras 😂🎉😂and call it a day...
Take a look at Dynamic range and youll keep your a7s iii
@@IVAN3000 yeah, i have been seeing that. it looks atrocious.
I’m curious to see if the AF aids work with manual focus lenses in the same fashion as with the Zf.
Yes, me too. This is a key question!
Hudson Henry has recently published a video about this. I believe what you are asking about is confirmed.
Great video, Hugh. I loved what you said about the f/1.8 primes in the Nikkor Z lenses. You influenced me to buy several (35mm, 50mm, 85mm).
Great to hear! Happy to be of service!
Nikon is back and it's no surprise.
Guess who's back, back again
Hugh, I appreciate that your reviews are always honest with no hidden agendas. Thanks so much!
😎👍
Glad you like them! :)
Take care.
Thanks for sharing!
10:10 Absolutely correct. And the professionals who really want to shoot raw can use an external recorder. I tried editing with it once, and it was more a PITA than I needed. I'd be happy enough with H.265 10-bit at the same bit rate as the H.264 equivalent.
Your voice and how you narrated through this video is so captivating! Well said sir!
Much appreciated!🖖
How is it possible to assess the focus capability let alone their relationship to other cameras by only shootong street?
You can't, and I made this point in the video.
You’re welcome! 😊🖖🏻
Thank you for your insights dear Hugh, and hello from Vienna, where I put the Z6III through her paces (with the 35/1.4)
Enjoy!
And yes, shooting jpeg, btw ;))
You are the voice of reason - very good points raised! The Camera Conspiracies guy Kasey recently did a nice review of the Z6iii with a Z 600mm 6.3 prime, shooting some local wildlife.
😊🙏🏻
The Z8 having 8k and twice the megapixels is worth the money difference. IN addition to a fully stacked sensor and a probably much faster shooting rate.
I love it. This will make used Z’s that much more affordable. 😂
Z6ii is already dropping
Howdy, I love the channel. It’s classy. I must mention that I know quite a few videographers that shoot in nothing but RAW. I’ve used it since the Z2 with the Ninja V. I love it. I see a big improvement over h.624/625. Just a week ago I shot an interview where I had mistakenly left my CF card at the office. I shot with the SD card that can’t handle RAW. Oh, I was shooting with a Z8. I’d forget the difference until I got back the edit. The RAW has better colors, dynamic range and it’s just got better wiggle room.
Thanks for weighing in! If you ever feel like doing a side by side comparo, let me know!
Reinforces what an absolute disgrace it was when Northrup, Angry Photographer, Polin and others were slating Nikon and gleefully predicting the company's imminent demise a few years ago.
Very True😒💯
"Don't listen to idiots" as my mother used to warn me 60 years ago. Still valid today, especially today.
I am not one to switch brands or models very often, as witnessed by my main two cameras are a Z6 original and D850 and use the original Z6 for 90% of my paid work but 18 F mount top grade lenses on either are not as the results from the 7 Z mount lenses. Ignoring video for the point, clients are very happy with the results with the Z6 and 85 1.2 or even 1.8 plus the advantage of having a superb stylist and MUA
I do videos also but more of video intros in actor portfolios. that turn out well but a few hours ago there was a youtube video using the Z6 lll that even with the limitations of RUclips and my laptop, the color and impact of scenes in a forest jumps out from screen as the best looking sequence I have ever seen on this laptop let alone the RUclips smashing bandwidth.
It was so sad to see. And what about the 1-slot card bashing?!
Then they Would not bash other brands for the same exact thing 😮
Angry photographer: "an insider told me the Z9 will NEVER be released". ....The clown hasn't made a photography video in years:):)
Thank you for your kind words, Antonio!
Nikon shooter, current Z6II...and I cannot wait to get my hands on this camera!
😊👊🏻
Thanks for sharing your take with both cameras!

Agreed. Claudia and I shoot raw.

410 glue method of old 24 million CMOS and D610 D750 image quality is no different Z63 like a fly ~
Non-native stack brings huge cost increase, in fact, it is just flying wire ~ You need to worry about power and overheating caused by glue aging CMOS glass fogging
Not only that, but the z-mount can adapt to most other mounts because it is so shallow. The drawbacks are minor for my needs.
I never capture video. So, what do I get for USD $2400?
The second I saw it had the damn ubiquitous side hinged rear lcd this camera was dead to me.

But that higher-spec viewfinder! Hope you can speak to that in the next video. Z8 at $1K more can't match that.
Thanks for sharing!
I was just about to purchase an S5ii recently and decided to wait to see this camera. Would you say this camera is worth the extra dollars for the specs it provides over the S5ii? The Z6iii will be $3400.00 (body only) here in Canada. Currently I can get an S5ii with two kit lenses for $3000.00
Depends on what you need. We love our S5 II’s and they give us everything we need. Your needs may differ! 😊🖖🏻
Z6iii or zf?
Can you speak to the dynamic range of the z6iii? It's all anyone is talking about right now online. Apparently the Z6iii was far worse DR than the z6ii, not to mention 10 year old DSLRs like the d750.
Our friends over at PetaPixel just published a thoughtful piece on this very topic.
Dual card video recording ?
Very exciting news, I heard it’s the same sensor that will be going into the A7Siv…wonder what the A7V will have too?
There's a lot of things to love but lets be real here... The A7S3 is 4 years old and this new Nikon is essentially just matching it, minus the 6K 60 raw. The slow motion is the same. N RAW is outdated and lacking in dynamic range and the no redundant recording option is a dealbreaker right off the bat. BUT it is def a step in the right direction and for any new buyer that isn't locked into a system, this is a fantastic camera. 6K 60 is amazing but I think you're limited to NRAW.
The Z6 III is one of the few cameras that actually gets a dynamic range improvement from raw video. I don’t consider this a feature.
In the past, it was really hard to recommend a well-rounded mid range camera on the Nikon lineup. Zf was too niche. The z6iii does hit all the check boxes. Well done Nikon! Thanks a ton Hugh! I now have an array of thoughts held I'm a table to look up to 😂
😉🖖🏻
The Z6III is a work of art! Anything Nikon is priceless!
I suspect your story is a common tale. Thanks for sharing.
And how wold is the Sony a7iv? I rest my case.
@@3BMEP Thanks for your clarification.
I’m seriously thinking going Jpeg only after your comments on RAW!
the Nikon Z6III is pretty much everything i hoped the Sony A7IV would be.
i never understood why Sony went for a higher MP sensor, and approved for every compromise that came due to it, instead of keeping a 24 MP resolution and improving every other feature.
just waiting now to see what the A7V may bring.
Great video! Thanks for this
🙏🏻🖖🏻
@@3BMEP I have been debating the Sony A7 IV, A7Cii and the z6 III largely for recording my son's hockey games and some casual amateur photography. The 4K60 crop kinda pushed be to Nikon...but im still on the fence. I wondred if full frame 4K60 will produce better low light image over Sony in crop
Let me know what you conclude!
Indeed that is the bottom line, Vincent!
Great that Nikon has brought its A game to compete. I am sick of Canon's attitude.
They're about to release the R5 Mark II. Nikon is only playing catch up now. Don't blame Canon if you're a bad photographer.
@@Zenutheduck-to4nrwhilst I agree that the R5ii is incoming, it's not really a Z6iii competitor. Rather the R6ii.
A well-considered rant at that! 😊🖖🏻
Well put.
Internal raw doesn’t make it better than both Sony’s. The Z6iii is a camera slapped with a bunch of tech but not enough to switch system for most people. The fact it can’t record to both card slots while recording video is a no go.
The Jeff Goldblum of Photography World and I am here for it baby!!

nice review. Thank you Hugh
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊🖖🏻
Thank you!
You're welcome!
1:18 The US price tag of $2,500 is fair. But in Europe, the camera costs FAR more. Retails for 3,000 euros, which is about $3,200. Completely unacceptable.
The US price does not include tax.
@@stanspb763i can drive 20 minutes and buy in Delaware with no sales tax. I understand there are ways for people in any state to buy online from Delaware shops and not have the sales tax collected.
Then dont but it. Easy
After waiting (im)patiently for months, I put in my pre-order this morning, to replace my D800.
One wonders if a Z73 is even in the cards at this point. There might not be much daylight between the Z63 and the Z8. Just from a business POV, it’s hard to see a case.
Everyone always says the Z7 may be an higher MP count body than the current 45’s but who knows until it actually comes out
I feel like a Z7III would have a slower 61MP body at a similar price to the Z8 for it to make any sort of sense.
the kicker is -they are all sony .....nikon uses sony sensors -nikon is a lesser version of sony now -change my mind ..... ive used only nikon and pretty sure ill be switching -i feel like u cant beat the internal noise reduction processing that makes the photos look hyper realistic
😂🎉😂 You kidding right?
Are we finally in peak camera era(except for lumix s1r mark2🤬)?
Just a small note: it’s so refreshing to have a photographer insert big band jazz for the photo session rather than that annoying ethereal crap the “photographer” RUclipsrs ALWAYS play.

specubation hahah yes...thats why I love my M8 and the D700

Hugh All Nikon Needed was time after over 100 yrs in SLR or DSLR!! It was always premature & click bait to declare Nikon Dead!!! Great review sir Great Insight Great Job!!
Thanks Ronald! 🖖🏻
Why, oh why, with the tilty-flippy screen?!?! I was so hoping that this would be a photo-centric camera. I guess that I'll have to keep waiting to see what else they release in the 1500-2500 range.
In think with the increasing emphasis on video that FAS are slowly taking oiver
The “6” series always had the video hybrid tag though, the photo focused version will be the 7iii or the ZF
