Thunder Road was my favorite coaster when I was a child in the 1970s. When I was 7, it threw me out of my seat and I was sitting on top of the head rest. I couldn't fold my legs to get them back underneath the leg bar. A woman sitting behind me pushed my butt and I flopped back in the seat.
My school went, and my group has a fear of roller coasters. So 4 out of 6 of us wanted to ride Thunder Road, so the chapperone let us. These girls who were in line with us convinced us on it, saying that there are hardly any drops, maybe 2 or 3 hills. So we got on, and we yelled to the top of our lungs at the first hill. The worst thing was, one girl who was riding had an ultimate fear of roller coasters. The look on her face after that ride I will never forget. THAT was a memorable ride.
This NEEDS to be my favorite wooden coaster at Carowinds because it's fast, thrilling, and might have lots of airtime. This coaster has two sides (North & South Carolina) because Carowinds is located in the NC/SC border. :)
No but that Was The jist I got From It,,,,,,,But It also cost a lot To Run It,,,,,,,if you look at paramount's Putting that water coaster In???????That Was aweful Now the new county Fair Has a stupid coaster an Aweful Vekoma,
I live in New York City, and I remember visiting family friends who moved to South Carolina circa 1994 - we went to Carowinds then and I loved it! I especially remember loving Thunder Road, may she rest in peace.
I'm so sad that Thunder Road is being removed I love this ride and I will miss it so much I wish Carowinds would change there minds and not get rid of it #SaveThunderRoad
Rocky Tuck honestly I have to say probably Hurler its to rough now, I've heard that they are getting a water park expansion and if that's the case I don't see why they don't make a path under it.
Then i don't see why they fucking have to tear the WHOLE THING DOWN when they can just make a path UNDERNEATH it, like Rebel Yell at Kings Dominion, my home park.
I don't know why they don't just make a path I guess there thinking is instead of spending a little extra to make a path they just want to get rid of a piece of history
I only got to ride this one time before it was shut down I was devastated but I'm glad I had at least one memory of me and my friend having a laugh on it
Thunder Road was my first ride in carowinds, I was only in 2nd grade, and now there gonna knock it down. Like this comment if you think that it shouldn't have been removed.
So sad it got torn down, I never got to ride it, because my family never had enough money to take me to Carowinds, but we got money this year and went and I could not get on it so I watched this to see how it was and it looks like a lot of fun
+Lori Hackney and like all my childhood rides here I miss this old park Deeply at least #Paramount didn't kill the ride that saved Carowinds:(paramount was better
This was my first roller coaster and I miss it terribly. I only got to ride it once before they tore it down for the stupid water park. R.I.P. thunder road, you will be missed
This was my father's favourite ride at Carowinds and favourite wooden coaster he'd ever been on. I was never lucky enough to ride it, but he always said it was very smooth with very comfortable airtime hills and unexpected rushing, simmilar to the sudden drops in GoldRusher. He compared it to the Woodstock express if WS was longer, more unpredictable, and louder. Carowinds takes excellend care of their coasters, and knowing this beloved ride was taken down for expansion is a bit dissapointing, as many suspect it would have lasted in prime condition for the next ten or so years. Hurler feels like a sweet homage to Carowind's wooden past, but it may never be as wonderful as the original wooden king of the Carolinas.
this looks awesome for a racer woodie! and i love how they built it like that on purpose, one side in the North and the other in the South! Now that's Unity :D
I think this is "Rebel Yell" from Kings Dominion in Va as well! Only its painted white. My first roller coaster too... Scared the crap out of me.. ill never forget crying for the first time, then getting back in line!
You guys should go to Idaho and to Silverwood Amusement park and film After Shock along with all of their awesome wooden roller coasters! Really it is quite an amazing amusement park!
They used to have signs on the wood when you went up the hill. They said "Grit your teeth, bear the load, enjoy your ride on thunder road. Man I miss the simple things about the park when Paramount owned it. Good times... Good times.
I love the older style wooden coasters and the track layout is very similar to the Great American Scream Machine at Six Flags over Georgia. I enjoy your channel very much! The videos are always informative as well as entertaining.
Oh no! They tore this coaster down? What the heck for? Isn't this coaster the sister to King's Dominion's 'Rebel Yell'? There aren't many racing coasters like this left anymore. The last one they tore out before this was Rolling Thunder at Great Adventure. That was a very unique ride in that both tracks were different. I don't know why they are tearing down these classics lately. So they tore this out for a water park expansion? That is pathetic. Heck what they could have done is have the water slides go THROUGH the structure of Thunder Road...especially in the turn around sections. They shouldn't have removed it.
@@tanaiseverything9384 Not necessarily. Age really isn't the determining factor. Just take a look at the Coney Island Cyclone. That has been with us since 1927. Granted, much of the wood on it is no longer original, but that is what it is with wooden coasters, they do need more maintenance than steel ones. But there are wooden coasters out there that have been around for a very long time. For the record, the sister coaster, Rebel Yell is still standing at Kings Dominion (although they don't call it that anymore).
Actually, EastCoasterGeneral, after looking up on Google Earth, both of the ride's stations are in South Carolina, and they cross the border to North Carolina after about the third hill (counting the lift hill as a hill.)
the thunder road takes you through to diffrent states the chain lift (both sides) are in south carolina but the turn around is in north carolina ex ------------------------------------I-------------------------- there is the coaster and then the capital I is the border line its hard to explain but just look at the carowinds map look to the thunder road and then it has a line through the coaster they just name the blue coaster side NC and the silver SC cause carowinds is in 2 states
There is a NC side and a SC side. If you pause the video just before the drop, the left side of the sign says North Carolina and the right side says South Carolina.
I have an uncle on probation who isn't allowed to leave the state where he lives. I was wondering......what if he was from South Carolina (he's not), went to Carowinds, careful to keep out of half the park, and then went on Thunder Road, forgetting that it crossed the border? Could he get arrested after getting off, since he technically went out of state? Not a real question; just a comedic thought. Or how about if he was from North Carolina and rode Fury 325?
I remember the days when the train on the NC side would take riders through the coaster backwards. I wonder why they made them both front-facing trains now.
You should change the description. There is not a North Carolina side and a South Carolina side. There is a silver side and blue side. Both start in South Carolina and cross into North Carolina and come back.
This ride wasn't that scary, just bumpy. It was my last ride of yesterday and it was pretty fun. There's two lanes at the beginning, one is at NC and the other is at SC.
listen carowinds is i think only in south and north carolina carowinds is on the state line that is the thunder road let me say this again carowinds is in south and north carolina on the STATE LINE
The backwards also kept on breaking down too but yes when the park was bought the park went through a serious overhaul. Where the Intimidatator stands now when Parmount owned it it was a log flume ride. I personally like the change. But they dont do backwards anymore.
I didn’t go to carowwinds for like 2 years and wondered what happend to this section of the park everything was missing because I remember their being a wood roller coaster other then hurler but I didn’t think it was the water park I thought there was always a water park?
I visited Carowinds for the first time 2 years after Thunder Road's closure. It's weird, because while the roller coaster did totally sit in the middle of the park and block further room for expansion, I would have said the 1 small thing I wish Carowinds would still have are better "classic" style rides to give a sense of the park's history. Given the new gate created with Fury 325, the water raft ride closing, and the completely new water park expansion alongside Copperhead strike: Carowinds almost feels like a brand new park. If they could only have found a way to build paths through Thunder Road to continue expanding the water park... rip
For some reason, the NC side is broken and i rode SC two times in a row because it was a week day so there was no one in our queue, its my fav roller coaster
+janjaylangelo4 you Mean Carolina Headbanger?????? naw I miss the real Black Beards revenge that was where cobra sits in my Childhood look it up a simulation ride not the new Slide Complex BTW

This was my first roller coaster. As watching this I could hear myself screaming "I'MMA DIE I'MMA FUCKING DIE!!!!!HOLY SHIT WE GONNA DIE AHHHHHHHH BLOODY HELL" Then we pulled back into the station i remember screaming "OH MY GOD I"M ALIVE!"
Can't believe they are tearing down my first big roller coaster ever! Such a classic.
RIP Thunder Road you will be missed

many a good ride
This was my favorite wooden coaster and my first ride after having only ridden kid's rides previously. I will forever miss it, those slides suck.
I miss it sooo much!!! My sister and I road it like, 10 times!!!! in a row! It was a great ride and it will be remembered.

I miss this rollercoaster ;-;
One of the first rollercoasters I ever rode. :) I remember when it went backwards!
So the whole park is on the border of the two Carolinas? That's really cool!
I got to ride this back when the other track went backwards, good times.
They used to have signs on the wood when you went up the hill. They said "Grit your teeth, bear the load, enjoy your ride on thunder road. Man I miss the simple things about the park when Paramount owned it. Good times... Good times.
This is basicall the same as the racer at Kings Island. They are great old school coasters with amazing air time.
I'll be willing to ride it, even if it's been there as long as my band teacher was 12 yrs old!
I love the older style wooden coasters and the track layout is very similar to the Great American Scream Machine at Six Flags over Georgia. I enjoy your channel very much! The videos are always informative as well as entertaining.

well kings island has a one to but it is white and it seperates at the turn around

I rode it yesterday, it took my stomach a lot, in a good way. :)
Nice video.
I am not a thrill seeker, I do not like heights I am pretty much a coward. I rode this and loved it! Perfect for me.
I love it there. I haven't been in years though. I wanna go back dammit! and that coaster was so much fun!
Mine too, I was barely tall enough to ride. This was back in the mid 90s
The coaster isn't actually divided along the border, it simply crosses it. It'd be cool it had been built with one half on each side though.

First roller coaster I ever road!! Great ride!!
Before this closed, as a kid I marathoned this thing so much because there was no line
That looks fun
I miss this ride so much. I wish they could make a metal version of it i stead of getting rid of it completely.
There is a NC side and a SC side. If you pause the video just before the drop, the left side of the sign says North Carolina and the right side says South Carolina.
