  • Part 1 Introduction and information prior to changing the Timing Belt on Nissan 300ZX Z31 1984 to 1989 VG30 engine. This video goes over procedures of changing a timing belt, things that can happen when a timing belt breaks, and parts needed to install a new timing belt and tensioner bearing on your 300ZX car. Also show the parts I used and prices I paid for a new timing belt and tensioner. I also go over the risks of a timing belt breaking in Interference and Non-Interference engines. Very important to replace old timing belt with a new belt, do not use old timing belts and tensioners. There's no reasonable way to predict how long the already worn tensioner or dry rotted rubber timing belt will last. Since its failure could require total rebuilding of your engine, is it worth re-using $50 worth of parts? My take is that I would rather install new parts and not worry about it for another 60k miles. Other items that I recommend replacing with new parts while changing the timing belt are: Waterpump, all accessory belts with their tensioner bearings, thermostat and gasket, all radiator hoses (since coolant has been drained), Tensioner bearing spring and retaining bolt, Cam oil seals, crank oil seal (prevent oil from leaking from engine to timing belt), and new coolant when the job is done. You do not have to do all these parts, its your call however, most of these parts have to be removed anyways to change the timing belt. Those parts are most likely as old as the timing belt or older.

Very good and easy to follow intro, I just bought a 1987 300zx non turbo with 70,000 miles in it. I’ll be doing this project ASAP unless I find paperwork saying it had been done already. Thanks
