Great video! To me this film signifies how if you have a craft that meaningfully engages you and you bask in it, it makes your entire life great. It makes you a better person to yourself and others, helps you deal with the challenges and tribulations of life with poise, gives you a feeling of contentment, and generally sustain a sense of purpose to live life gracefully. In the absence of something constructive like that, you react dismally to the challenges of life (like Emerett who couldn't get over his lost love, or Paterson's boss who always had a laundry list of complaints). There is salvation in art. Poetry is a classical textbook manifestation of art, but art lies in a lot of things - even sports, or engineering. As long as a human being is involved in some pursuit of some form of art, he/she lives a better, happier and a more beautiful and fulfilled life. I liked the observations you made in this video like the most happening thing that happens in the movie is the bus breaking down, and how our instinct is to to think of the wife as somebody who is fickle and irresponsible, but she is also living a fulfilled happy life and doing her bit in the family. It shows how the same facts can be interpreted with different perspectives - joyful or bitter.
Thank you very much! You said it very well that doing soomething constructive makes your entire life great! I think it doesn't even have to be art, but that's a very obvious one for sure. Recently I got into gardening, and I find that that's kind of like the next level in the game of happiness haha. :) Doing some phisical work and then literally eating the fruit of that labor just feels divine. :) Building a house and making kids are the next ones on my list although it may take a while. :) I like what you wrote about perspectives! And I think that the ability of looking at things joyful originates from the ability of being grateful. To realize and appreciate what we have and not focusing on what we miss. That's something that can be practiced even in the harshest circumstances, and it can help turn things around into a positive spiral instead of a negative. Thank you for taking the time to write this nice comment! :)
Good analysis but I think it’s more to do with absence of focusing on yourself. Paterson simply drifts, he isn’t constantly thinking about himself and his life, he pays attention to other things. David Foster Wallace’s speech “This is Water” is very very close to this film. (And his books are even in Patterson’s library).
This instantly became one of my top 5 favorite films. It struck something deep in me, and while it is "boring" it kept my attention the entire time. I can't stop thinking about it. I saw it as a film about poetry, what makes up a great poem, and what makes a great poet. And that great poetry is not separate from the mundane, but a part of it. Paterson understood the beauty of routine and repetition, and while he has a "boring" life, this film helps us envy it.
Matthew Mewhorter so agree!! I just discovered it and had to rent to watch... ended up rewatching several times! It’s incredibly meaningful and sweet! Driver’s character is just such a kind beautiful human being with such a pure heart, you can’t help but root for him and so the end, after that exchange with the Japanese man, is so rewarding!
I'm curious what else is in your top 5 :) I watched this movie when it got released and can't stop thinking about it since then. As you can see, since I'm watching this years later. :)
Thanks for this - I cannot get over the experience of this movie! Every nuance of it gets highlighted because of the slower tempo, and you end up noticing and appreciating everything- the watch, the chair with the neatly folded clothes on it, the cereal bowl, etc etc Ahh such an inspiring approach to filmmaking
thank you for your detailed analysis of the movie. I'm captivated by how you breakdown your claim that this is a boring movie and concluded with a A-Ha element. Beautiful review! Definitely did justice to this movie! Thanks again!
This was a PERFECT explanation of the film. Thank you for making this video, it truly helped me understand why I liked the film so much (I only just finished it),,, And now I'm going to watch it again with deeper understanding,
what struck me most about this film was i went out on a limb and actually bought an ESTEBAN guitar through the mai,l even though my head said no it can't be any good if its coming through the mail and what will all my musician and family say about my blind faith well i couldn't resist i got my black ESTABAN with his image on the back of the guitar home and i played it like it was the best guitar in town like i struck gold i convinced myself that it was a great guitar for the money and i hit the jackpot then i proudly showed it to my brother one day he knew his way around the git box and he didn't give any signs of enjoyment that playing a guitar usually brings, then at the end of his spin around the block he stated that i should learn how to play slide guitar and that one of his co workers bought the same guitar and the neck snapped on it, while we laughed together i was was convenience of my new investment and by weeks end like on cue the neck on my beautiful ESTABAN SNAPPED TOO i was not saddened i was not mad i was like pattinson i was zen about it and i went on my way still loving the muse and then years later i took another chance at a mail order bride and that has made all the difference... that's my story and i'm sticking to it, peace out
Yeah this film unravels the presuppositions it creates. Meaning in form is the perfect title for this video. This is a wonderful review you've created. It kind of reminds me of the film My Dinner with Andre as well.
Great review ! You exactly put into words my thoughts about this ! And I like the peaceful atmosphere, here... Also, as someone who likes to create, I've found Paterson's story very inspiring and relatable... It has become one of my favourite movies, really :)
Watching this I observed that Paterson and his wife are very opposite to each other, just like black and white, on which Laura is decorating a lot of things. :) Edit: Also, a lot of people are are expecting dramatic things to happen, people were expecting the buss to blow ”in a fireball”, Laura wanting to become a star and successful somehow, actor with the gun. But not Peterson, he just enjoys the quiet and the calm.
Nice observation! And yes I think people in real life also look for drama lot of the times, just to fill their life with something exciting. Paterson in the other hand finds the little things exciting, like the sunrise light on a building, so his life is perfectly filled with happiness, and doesn't need any drama :)
Handsome foreign guy with just the right amount of scruff who looks like the cliche lady killer in movies talks about movies. I think you found your niche. Btw, good review.

There are no boring days, only boring people.

Really do it is wonderful in a similar way.
I would say he doesn't have a goal, he has a passion and his happiness is the indulgence in his passion.
Beautifully put...!!! I wish more people get to see the movie and your review :)
