I have no idea why, but this tune burst into my head while I was driving a few days ago. I'd been humming it ever since, until a few minutes ago when I remembered a few words, and it suddenly dawned on me that it was this song back from when I was 10!!!! Long term memory is a funny thing... and this was pure nostalgia - all hail the time-travelling power of RUclips. Thanks for posting this (13 years ago! LOL)
Sends chills down my spine. Except 1966 World Cup this has to be one of the best. Best football song ever written and also England had the best Football theyve ever had.
Was in the USAF stationed in Germany. Was in East Anglia during Falklands War and went to Spain and ended up watching Argentina- Hungary play in Alicante after a few days in Benidorm. Didnt play up that I was an American all that much. It was a blast.
@@MauriceCox-d9q actualy im referencing 2 songs in that comment my favourite songs they had nothing to.do with 66 so i dunno were ur goin with that comment🙄🤡
It was actually composed and produced by Chris Norman and Pete Spencer, both members of hitmaking country-pop band Smokie. Chris also duetted with Suzi Quatro on her sole US Top 10 hit, 'Stumblin' In'.
First single I bought with my 10th birthday money. Blue vinyl! Had the album too with the full colour booklet insert to fill the scores in as the tournament progressed.
I remember this song vividly. I thought it was very catchy and the line "this time ..." has never left me and the catch is ... I'm Scottish! It brings back memories. I'm 37 now! Hopefully no jerks will make anti Scottish or English comments on this page. Let's just have a bit of nostalgia. Does anyone know what the music was called for the 1978 BBC World Cup theme?
Takes me back to being 11 years old again lol Just one thing-it would be nice to see the original video, showing the England team and manager singing in the recording studio, weaing their headphones -is it up on youtube
Whos here after they reached final again
My first World Cup, it will always hold a special place in my heart.
I had not heard this for a very long time. surprised to find myself dashing away a manly tear!! Good times for a 9 year old 😊
I sang this at a pub during last World Cup and no one knew what I was on about haha.

I love this. Has to be one of my faves of all England songs
It makes you wonder, it makes you proud. To play for England, and hear the crowd!
Yes!
This was made for singing in the pub watching england.love it.
Also got proper rousing lyrics. When the players seemed a lot more prouder to pull on the shirt.
i remember being 5 and kept playing this on the record player, still love it

@@jonnymill5520 I was also 7, loved the records and football of that era.

I did too, then realised i had two left feet
My first world Cup I tried being eder the next day after seeing Brazil v Russia lol

Singing this day and everyday singing for England.
They never seem to play this song on the radio when there's a football tournament with England.
I know and i love this!!
They should do, much more inspiring and rousing than that maudlin dirge Three Lions.

Love this Anthem but it’s a crime that Gary Shaw and Tony Morley weren’t at that World Cup!
New Order & English Squad, jhon Barns rap, classic, was the song, "playing For England"
I wanna time machine built quickly.... want to go back to 1982🤔🤔🤔

New Zealand did that in the 2010 comeptition.
The B-Side was pretty good too from what I recall, no?
We'll fly the flag. My dad still has a copy because he was in the band that recorded 'this time' so it might mean more to me than anyone else.
