Simple and exactly what I need. I'll make one of these, which will save me a ton of fuel next time I'm out on a longer hike. My stove was really struggling in the wind last time and I almost ran out of gas because I couldn't protect the stove properly. This will make a huge difference in performance, and a super small difference in overall weight of my pack. Absolutely brilliant! Thanks for sharing man!
I have always been told not to use a windscreen that goes all the way down around the fuel canister on a canister stove. They say it is possible to heat your canister too hot and cause a rupture. Canister stove companies don't sell windscreens like that for their stoves because of that. It must be working ok for you though. 😀
you all probably dont give a damn but does someone know a trick to log back into an instagram account? I stupidly forgot the account password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me!
@Kole Emerson i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and im trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I did a mix of this as well. Cut two 1" lips onto each side to sit on the pot handles. Then a tiny hole on the opposite side to site on the pot rest. Works perfect without surrounding the canister
@@anarchypoth13 I realy don't understand all the worry about the canister exploding. Remember that heat rises and will always move from the canister.Keeping it, the heat , static with nowhere to go is the problem. The windscreens that are made in this article are just fine !!
Thanks for the idea. Just checked on Amazon.fr (I live in France) & those cooking sheets are 30 euros. Man you are SO lucky having the stores you have in the US that sell items for the prices you guys pay
They work well, and that was a solid walk through on how to make them, but I'd really think twice about using the one that wraps around a can. Particularly with no holes. I use mine with a remote canister stove only. They can really can go boom. Good thing about that one is you can wrap it tight, stick in a pot, and it's good to go.
when you would wrap it around a gas stove yes... but an Alkohol burner can't go "boom" because there is no pressure on it. that's why there is a non-wrap-around design vor the gas stove and a wrap around design for the Alkohol burner
The wind screen that closes up fairly tight around the alcohol stove should have some small holes added near the base. This will permit the air, which is heated by the stove, to flow upward and around the pot thus transferring more heat to the pot.
Great video!...I've done this for years and I can attest that they work great and are pennies to make which is what I like. Although I've never had to use a windscreen for my pocket rocket even in the strongest gales...nor is it the safest practice with a canister stove. I dig your attention to detail with rolling the edges!...
I just made one and then I saw this better one haha. So I'll do it again. The only thing I would add is fold in feet, which I would make of a paper clip or other wire and put that in the fold of the two corners, maybe one in the middle. I think it will help a bit with tipping over in the wind all the time, and easy to replace if I folded them too often.
Great table background, great idea and great price. I was just looking at windscreens to buy when I thought: geez, I bet there's a DIY one out there somewhere... I guess to keep the canister from heating up too much, as a previous comment said, you could punch some holes in the bottom to allow for a little, but not too much, circulation.
In regards that folding stand that fits on stove, I find they don't provide optimal distance between pot and stove and for alcohol stove that point is very important for a more efficient and quicker boil..
I've been trying to figure out a way to make a windscreen for my Canister Stove; using a cookie sheet provides me with the additional thickness of aluminum I've wanted. I didn't even need to go out & buy a cookie sheet, I simply used the one I already had when I bought a 3 pack some time ago.
You know what's heavier than it needs to be? That Trangia alcohol stove. The Evernew titanium stove is feather light and works great. Yep, I know it's too expensive, but I love it.
I really liked this tip. If the titanium windscreen I ordered doesn't work out, I will be doing this next. I gave you a sub and looking forward to seeing what your channel is all about. -ATB Adam
I see a lot of guys drill holes around the bottom of their diy windscreens for air flow, and I noticed you didn't. You never have any trouble with your fire breathing properly? Anyway, thanks for the great video, my friend.
Hi there! I have to agree with what others already has commented, that this is dangerous. If it hasn´t blown up yet, I would think it is just borrowed time. I would for you own, and other´s safety urge you to encourage not to use this solution. Primus and Optimus has windscreens that clip to the top of the canister - reflecting heat up and away from the canister - and leaves the canister itself unobstructed to dissipate heat to the surrounding air. Although not condoned by MSR, by design it should be much safer.
Thanks for the video! Would you mind telling me what cockpot that is?? I have the same MSR stove as you do, that uses the fuel canister, and I'd like to get a pot like yours that the fuel canister can nest down into. Thanks!
Good video. My biggest fear with this design is the cannister overheating and exploding. I am wondering whether or not drilling a few small holes around the perimeter of the screen would serve to mitigate that risk.
Jim Matiko , no worries about the canister overheating in this situation. To play it safe, you can occasionally touch the canister. If you can comfortably touch it, its still safe (within design spec).
Hey.....I'm not a moron...but, how much is a dollar ? Lol. Good info on the heavier aluminum cooking pans. My daughter wanted me to build a windscreen for her pocket rocket so right on time.
Minute 4.44; 12 ounces???? that's 3/4 of a pound. a commercial folding one bigger and stronger than that only weighs 8 ounces ! Do you mean 12 grammes?
I just wrote the same. Can you imagine a 22 ounce windscreen? That's more than my pack at 20.95 oz, pad at 12 oz, dyneema tent at 19 ounces and sleeping bag at 21 oz.
Stanley makes a tall cook pot for around $20. They also have one with a French press insert. When I want to save weight, I just leave the insert behind. You've probably already found an answer to this question since it was posted a year ago.
you do know not to put a windscreen totally around your canister stove. also you really effecting the effectiveness of your alcohol stove with a solid wind screen.
After watching, I ran up to DollarTree and got 2 disposable cookie sheets and made this windscreen. It will work out perfect. Thanks.
Awesome! Don't forget to enter the 2K sub giveaway!
You must mean grams and not ounces? A 12 and 22 ounce wind screen is super heavy. I do like the design.
Great video and really love that accent. It's like Elvis telling you how to do ultralight cooking - heaven!
Thanks for the kind words.

OMG! You are so smart!!! Now I don't have to spend $20 for my shield. Thank you so much!
I use the same screen for both stoves just add 4 or 5 jumbo paper clips at the bottom for the msr type stove to rise it up
I subscribed just because of the part when he pointed to the morons... ha! that was good!
I put a thumb up just for that !:)
Hey, great video and clever solution. Thanks also for the simple, clear explanation. It was easy to follow. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.
The Tri - Fold one, I use and is the best without any doubt. Thanks for sharing.

That's why the PocketRocket one is a tripod. It doesn't enclose the stove and allows some heat to escape.

@Kole Emerson It worked and I actually got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thank you so much you saved my account !
@Mayson Kade Glad I could help xD
So used the first version with slits to fit on the pot rest above the canister so u block wind from the flame only.
I did a mix of this as well. Cut two 1" lips onto each side to sit on the pot handles. Then a tiny hole on the opposite side to site on the pot rest. Works perfect without surrounding the canister

just noticed someone else mentioned the holes...great minds.
i like the table top target lol. thanks for the vid, gonna try it out. you save me many monies
22 ounces? That's 1.6lbs. I'm assuming you meant grams. Thanks for the video though. Will be trying.
Excellent! Great idea. I’ll look out for this Alu baking sheets, and make me a couple of these. Thank you
I like it! Making one today...thanks for sharing
Great video! And I'm not a moron ;) 👍 I'll be giving this a shot tomorrow
Nice Work!! Thanks for saving me time figuring it out!
One word - amazing! You post really smart videos :-)
Thanks. But don't say that too loud. I'll ruin my reputation. :)
this is awesome thank you!
Perfect! So simple. Thank you.
You calling me a moron? I resemble that remark. 😋
In regards that folding stand that fits on stove, I find they don't provide optimal distance between pot and stove and for alcohol stove that point is very important for a more efficient and quicker boil..
Really good windscreen ideas, thanks!

Thanks man!
I just made one! Thank you!
How about folding it 6 times for a hexagonal shape . paper punch some holes at the bottom edge to stop heat buildup in canister.
Hey! Thank you for this idea!

Thanks that was just tooo easy!!
wow, awesome video. Thank you sir
Clever, thanks!
I hope 22 gm not 22 oz
Yeah! Geez!
22 ounces would be 620 grams and my backpack is only a little bit heavier than this... so I guess what you meant was 22 grams
Good! it will save you a lot of money on Gas and time cooking .

Cookpot. I'm a moron. : )
great info!
Glad I'm not the only person that noticed that first. 👍🏻
22 ounces? Do you mean grams? Or 0.22 ounces?
Yes. Thanks. :)
Are you sure that weighs 22 ounces? That’s almost 1-1/2 lbs.
Where did you get the pot stand for your Trangia??
Good video. My biggest fear with this design is the cannister overheating and exploding. I am wondering whether or not drilling a few small holes around the perimeter of the screen would serve to mitigate that risk.
Not sure that would be a problem as the stove is not on for very long. Thanks for watching!
Jim Matiko

I've had the same experience. Heat rises so the canister is safe.
Pretty smart

Once oz, grams, Weights and measures, ?
Minute 4.44; 12 ounces???? that's 3/4 of a pound. a commercial folding one bigger and stronger than that only weighs 8 ounces ! Do you mean 12 grammes?
Argg, ordered 1 yesterday for 7$.
I think you meant grams, not ounces.

That's a nice tall cook pot. Who makes it?
Looks like a Snow Peak Mini Solo pot. The original, not the newer one with a silicon nub lid handle.
Stanley makes a tall cook pot for around $20. They also have one with a French press insert. When I want to save weight, I just leave the insert behind. You've probably already found an answer to this question since it was posted a year ago.
where do you get those stands for your trangia?
Amazon www.amazon.com/Evernew-Titanium-Alcohol-Stove-Cross/dp/B003DKK7MA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1493841636&sr=8-1&keywords=evernew+stand
Simple but 12 oz is .75 pound. That is too much for this lightweight hiker.
you do know not to put a windscreen totally around your canister stove. also you really effecting the effectiveness of your alcohol stove with a solid wind screen.
Yes. Thanks.
I've been called worse.
Yo. If you're gonna be calling us morons, you might wanna study up on your units of measure first.
hmm. Ill have to google this to make sure, I think a morons capabilities are well beyond my skill set as an idiot.
Really enjoyed your video. Let's check Avasva plans also
