  • This was such an exciting find that I had to share. Go out and buy a package of "Drain Sleeve" and you'll never need to buy a filter sock or media bag again.

    Thank you Greg. I'm a month or 2 in to this hobby. My plan was a Betta & a bowl. Two Betta, 2 snails, one 5g light up tank (stupid), one 10g standard & one11g bookcase long planted tanks, 6 dead plants, 4 heaters & filters & jacked up substrate later I SURE appreciate this tip. I discovered Purigen for my brown water(tannins) & popped a hole in it after 5 min tonight. You crack up too "everywhere I go I'm looking for stuff to use in my aquariums" SAME. :)

    Greg Lowe's has it in Black so you could use it on fill tubes etc to keep out sand and debris out of filter like pre-filter.

    I don't know. You can get micron felt from Dr's Foster and Smith in sheets and sew your own filter socks. You can also get netting material from any cloth shop ie Wal-Mart and sew your own media bags. You can also get nylon thread so it will last. I can't see saving a few dollars over risking your fish and corals. As far as that goes you can just buy bags and socks. They don't cost that much and can be reused many times. I went so far as to buy a little portable washing machine meant for camping to wash mine in. The cost over time turns out to be minimal. Certain things you should try to save money on other that will last a long time you should just realize you will have them for a long time and the money over time is not that much. This is an expensive hobby fresh and marine, too many people don't realize that at the outset.

    I tried this, same type of filter sock. There was manufacturing residue which leeched into the tank when first used, looked like a it was soaked in a bit of milk before use. It did not look oil based given it's diffusion through the water column. Be sure to wash these out thoroughly before use as they may contain an antifungal treatment. Will let you know how the corals handle this accidental release of mystery substance into their environment.

    Nice work, could cut the bottom out of a round plastic container and the centre out of the lid and use to make a filter sock with the scew on/off lid to secure the sock to the cylindrical container. I need to find some of that sleeving :-)

    Awesome find! I've spent some time today researching filter sock materials/assembly/alternatives and this is one of the better finds of the day. My only suggestion is that the video could probably have been 1/2 as long considering the subject.

    So what's the verdict after a couple of months now? Are they serviceable over a traditional filter sock?

    • @gregjonesonline
      @gregjonesonline  8 лет назад

      yeah, they hold up great, cheap enough you can throw them away, unsure what the micron rating would be, if you need something really fine this probably wont cut it

    • @gregjonesonline
      @gregjonesonline  7 лет назад

      Marek Tustin similar to a media bag, will catch heavy stuff but not super fine particles

      I don't know what home improvement stores you have in australia - a quick google search showed a place called Bunnings? go to the plumbing section and ask them for drain sleeves
