WOW, nostalgia. I lived in Newborough for 20 years and did this walk probably 3 times a week with my dog Henry. + all the locations you go to in North Wales. I wish i was back there.
Great challenge and really nice shots. That was a great way to spend a sunset. I particularly liked the shout of the pine tree limb extending from the left side of the frame with the distant mountains beneath. I wouldn't have thought of that.
In my opinion, the best shot of the set was the second of the horse at sunset beneath the branches. I must visit Newborough again when I visit my brother at Llangaffo. Thanks for sharing the video.
Great challenge. A good reminder to challenge myself now and then to stretch my composition thinking. That horse, couldn't have planned it better. Thanks David.
Another nice set of images - my particular favourite was the last shot of the sunset and the pony. Simply beautiful! (Though the shot of the tree branches and the dunes in the background was a close second!)
Newborough Warren that's a blast from the past, that tree was a sapling last time I was there, I remember when it was all dunes 😂great shots and use of your focal length, the stars of the show were definitely the ponies, our camera aerobics a close second though
A nice idea and some lovely shots. The wide one with the branch coming in from the left side is my favourite - although i'm also glad you captured some of the horses. I hoped you would when i saw the white one clipping about in the background early on.
Cheers mate - much appreciated. It was astonishing that the pony stood still long enough to feature in the composition because it was a great addition to it! 😊 👍🏻
Nice one David. You did well with the challenge. I think I would have struggled with that focal length as it’s not really one I use often by choice. I rather enjoyed the format of the vlog with the stationary camera position. It’s a little different in terms of perspective and allows the viewer to observe your approach to the shots. I recommend using it again. Love the final image too. Cheers, Jeff
Well done John Rambo great vlog and well up to the challenge set, See you Wednesday for the Prestatyn Camera Club talk, Think as a club we will have to find you a challenge, What have you started
Haha - just tried it out on the Watkin Path to keep my hair off my face while a hat was too hot and decided it's actually quite practical (other than getting a haircut of course!) plus having lost weight my old collection of hats are starting to blow off too easily in the winds we've had lately so this could be my new look for a while!! 😊👍🏻
I think my repetitive responses might become tedious, David. However, I must let you know that your final compositions were quite breathtaking. And, such fun to watch. Those are wild ponies? Nice challenge indeed. A fan in Canada.
Hi Jann - not tedious in the slightest! I really appreciate feedback A. because it makes all the effort worthwhile and B because RUclips likes it as making the video worth promoting! But mainly because I really enjoy hearing from people and engaging about photography. The ponies on the dunes are semi-wild. They're kept in the area specifically to manage the vegetation, but they pretty much just live there without any human intervention. Sometimes they are relocated to other coastal areas nearby where there are similar environments. 😊👍🏻
Well done Mr G for taking this challenge on :D I loved the tree you photographed and can I just say I love ponies so that was kind of them to make an appearance :D Your images were really nice and I am pleased you enjoyed yourself . That light from the sunset was lovely on the close up shots and that shot of the tree with the sun going down was wonderful. I will let you off for zooming for that final shot because the ponies and the tree with the sunset was way too good to miss out on :D Thank you once again for doing this challenge and thanks for sharing your lovely results. atb :D Teddy
What a great challenge and well performed David! Truly beautiful images of the horses in back light and the tree at sunset. Oh and thanks so much for the end card, much appreciated 👍
Ah I miss that IBIS from Olympus paired with the 12-100mm, best combination for M4/3 on the market right now. You did pretty good job David with the challenge. The one at 9:41 with the ponies is my favourite!
Certainly was Dennis! I really didn't expect that opportunity, but I guess it goes to show with photography you have to hone your skills so you can be ready for anything! 😀👍
Cheers Brian - I really quite liked that one too, maybe because it's not my usual sort of thing! 😀👍I'm going to go back and head all the way down to Abermenai before too long.
Hi David. Great vlog !! Completely different and very entertaining. You've done well to meet the challenge and come away with such fabulous images. Well done ! Many thanks for sharing David.
Nice challenge! But it wouldn't work for me or a challenge as I shoot primarily primes so most of the time I shoot with a fixed focal length anyway :) But I do enjoy your video and gosh, those golden lights were just heart-warming!
I totally agree with you. I would certainly shoot primes as a preference all things being equal - but I went down to M4/3 in order to save weight for my hiking so the 12-100 was actually part of the decision process 😊👍🏻
hahaha yeah it was just a quick fix when I was out with Darren because my hat was too hot but it keeps my hair out of my eyes - could be a new trademark look! 😀👍
That's a very fair point, of course. And I would normally totally agree. But my personal preference now and then is to use the tools at my disposal to get what I want out of them. In this instance the sharpness of the image was pretty much irrelevant. The tree was always going to be a silhouette and the foreground was of no consequence. The image was about shape, colour and tone and I specifically wanted the most sunburst effect I could get. I'm aware of the lens / body limitations and wouldn't normally push it that far. 😊👍🏻
I have tried that tree dozens of times with no success, it didn't really matter as just being there was just such a pleasure. Just me and my dog Henry.
Interesting approach! The last shot on the video was a great keeper, and that (perhaps) demonstrates the benefits of a zoom lens. Plus, if you had tried to shoot that with, say, the Olympus 45mm 1.8 fixed focal length I doubt it would have been possible to mount a filter holder (of course the 45mm 1.2 is a different story, that costs as much as the 12-100!) Also noted the absence of flare that the non-believers claim is a problem with M43 cameras.
You're quite right on all counts, Tony. It's not always possible to eliminate flare, but if you're careful you can control it reasonably well in most cases 😊 👍🏻
enjoying all your vlogs, how the Olympus coming along, I use a Nikon dslr & I'm thinking of a change but reviews are confusing,,,I.e. Panasonic, Fuji, Olympus etc..got a headache now !!
Hi Martin, many thanks for watching. I'm really loving everything about it so far. I will be doing a full review specifically from a landscape photography perspective in the not too distant future 😊👍🏻
Hi Harry, many thanks for watching and taking the time to make contact. That's a good question: I'd probably have thought about a centred composition if I wasn't balancing it with the pony. And I'd have taken a couple of options including the tree on a vertical third. I would have most likely settled on a third version as a final composition if the pony wasn't there though, because of the scale of the tree in the shot. Had I been standing some way off it, with the tree quite small in the frame and the sky as a larger area of negative space, then the tree centred would have worked better. But the sun would have been lost at that scale in these conditions. If I'd had nothing going on in the sky that would have been the sort of image I'd have gone for. 😊👍🏻

Cheers Ben, yes I always liked that one, too 😊👍
Great challenge. A good reminder to challenge myself now and then to stretch my composition thinking. That horse, couldn't have planned it better. Thanks David.
Yes I couldn't believe the horse was so cooperative!! The final composition would definitely have been poorer without it! 😊👍🏻
Brilliant David Rambo Griffiths. Aaaah my kinda subject, Trees 👌 excellent work David. 👍
Cheers mate. Out of my comfort zone!! 😊👍🏻
Another nice set of images - my particular favourite was the last shot of the sunset and the pony. Simply beautiful! (Though the shot of the tree branches and the dunes in the background was a close second!)
Hi Kevin, yes I totally agree with you on those choices 😊👍🏻
Really lovely images! The light was fabulous and the separation on the ponies shot is superb.
Many thanks Jerry - I was really fortunate with that shot! 😀👍
Newborough Warren that's a blast from the past, that tree was a sapling last time I was there, I remember when it was all dunes 😂great shots and use of your focal length, the stars of the show were definitely the ponies, our camera aerobics a close second though
Cheers Garry - yeah only 2 or 3 trees have made it to maturity. One day I'm going to schlep all the way down to Abermenai for a shoot! 😊👍🏻
Great idea to take up a subscriber challenge. Loved the way you worked what was a difficult and challenging shoot 👍
Cheers mate - I've got a couple in more in the pipeline at the moment too. Why not solicit ideas for 5in5's if you're running short? 😊👍🏻
A nice idea and some lovely shots. The wide one with the branch coming in from the left side is my favourite - although i'm also glad you captured some of the horses. I hoped you would when i saw the white one clipping about in the background early on.
I might have been a bit jittery if I'd spotted it!! But it was only when I watched the footage back ... 😀👍
I really enjoyed that Mr G and you got some very calming images I must say, and I had to laugh a your "phone call" about the pony ha.
Cheers mate - much appreciated. It was astonishing that the pony stood still long enough to feature in the composition because it was a great addition to it! 😊 👍🏻
Really enjoyed this vlog Dave. It's interesting to see how challenging yourself can produce very different images. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.
Cheers Rob 😀👍

Hey Mike, thanks for watching! Yes that one was a bit of a bonus 😊👍🏻
Nice vlog Rocky. lol I was tempted to wander around those dunes when driving through them. I wasn't up to it that day so maybe next time. :-)
Hopefully we can hook up next time you're in the area? 😊👍🏻
@@DGriffGallery It would be a pleasure. I'd enjoy it too 😉😂😂
Very entertaining, love that place, gives a great feeling of openness and light.

Absolutely stunning images David. The horse was a fine bonus hey?
Certainly was Dennis! I really didn't expect that opportunity, but I guess it goes to show with photography you have to hone your skills so you can be ready for anything! 😀👍
Playing catch-up again, nice series of shots David. No 2 was my favourite by a short head.

D Griff Gallery I’d give it a miss today, methinks.
Sound advice! I'm going to make 3 or 4 "studio" videos today to stack up ready. Then a sunset Park & Shoot at Cable Bay tomorrow hopefully :)
D Griff Gallery In the vilage shop this am - hoping no one wants logs or coal from the outside store!
Really enjoyed this one. You must have paid that pony? 🤣 Another awesome video.
Cheers mate - I know, I actually 'Shopped the pony out in post as a test and it looked as dull as dishwater! Stroke of luck there! 😊👍🏻
Liked them all. Well done.
Many thanks Alan - really appreciate you watching 😊👍🏻

Thoroughly enjoyed this one. I heard you say f22 never not with micro four thirds diffraction can begin to set in by f11

Love the back lit 3 pony image, very nice! Good job on the challenge.
Many thanks - really appreciate your support 😊👍🏻
That was interesting a bit fun I would go for some kind of challenge let’s say one word photography! Like this one keep up the good work!
Thanks a lot Norbert! 😊 👍🏻Looking forward to meeting you in a few weeks!

Loved the production in this video, it made for a nice watch. Just wondering why you composed the tree off centre at the end? Nice shot regardless
Hi Harry, many thanks for watching and taking the time to make contact. That's a good question: I'd probably have thought about a centred composition if I wasn't balancing it with the pony. Very interesting and entertaining, thank you. Not tall enough - would holding the camera above your head and using the lcd work?
