I feel really bad for this episode... it was trying to mimic the last Christmas special and it suffers for it. A lot. Probably because it also wants to have its own identity, which results at 3 different stories all at once. Yeah its bad... Also it has a banger scene at the end with the doctor saying hello to the ponds, and then saying they always do was just incredible, and that tear like *DUDE* thats why the ponds and the doctor are an excellent pairing/trio depending on how they are utilized. Ok now time to actually watch the video

He tried to hard to shoehorn a Christmas miracle in. Making the ship into a greenhouse and growing more amazing plants in it and the family living in the big house without Reg would've been amazing.
My younger self immediately wondered if the Doctor had ever encountered the fairies from Torchwood when he mentioned Fairyland. Though, on current reflection, it was probably some kind of space Disneyland.
As an American viewer of DW, I seldom am aware of who "big name guest stars" actually are. So since I don't know who Bill Baily is, I don't see his character or his character time, as a waste. No offense meant.
Same. Usually when a character I don’t know gets some importance it’s usually a classic who person I don’t know like Sarah Jane I like the actors being treated as actors and then finding out they’re actually famous people. Makes it less cheesy to have a guest star. Hell I didn’t even know Kylie Minogue was Astrid because she was played so neutrally
The main problem here is that there seems to be a mentality which states "A Christmas Special MUST have a happy ending." So Reg HAD to come back. And yeah, the "Moffat doesn't really want anyone to permanently die" thing pops up also. (Little did we know...)

Not watched this ep in years, but I have a recollection of wondering as to what happened to the other crewmen on the plane when it appears at the estate at the end. They're no where to be seen. And wasn't one of them already dead? Still not a good Christmas for his family and loved ones.

Absolutey agree about the father's return at the end completely negating the main point of the story. While the boy actor was awful (possibly inspiring those k8d actors in Capaldi's Forest of the Night to be as awful as they possibly could) I thought the girl actor was terrific. But wasn't she actually much older than the character?
I've never watched or read any Narnia movies or books. So that source for this ep doesn't mean anything to me. I love the idea of the large gift box opening up to another world and how exciting that would be. Although, I'm not certain as to why the Doctor thought such a gift would be a good idea for curious kids. The Doctor didn't seem to know the box led to Androzani Minor, so that aspect of the story always confused me.
Actually... Yes it was really bad! However. It did have a Lancaster bomber in it. And Just Jane which is beiing restored in Lincs. So for that reason alone I can watch the Lancaster bits. Always nice to see Just Jane on the TV
Just to check though, when is this episode set? I think Harbo says 1941, If that’s the case, as you know, the Lanc. Doesn’t come into general service until 1942. Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey I suppose But yes I have to agree, major love for the Lancaster being featured

I have a beautiful Italian leather wallet which I’ve had since my 18th birthday and 11 years on it’s still perfect. I hope to never misplace/lose it and I love it
My issue with wokeness comes from Chibnall and his clumsy writing. Back when this aired it was a tad clumsy at times, but mostly little different from previous DW history, but Chibbs really cannot be subtle or effective in most areas under his influence, which is made more obvious when he is actually able to do good writing. Oh well, he's gone now, and looking forward to the new era.
4:31 no we're not, we're a species operating within an economic system built on endless growth, do not essentialise the self destructive flaws of capitalism to the human species.
Doctor Mysterio is a superhero homage (Grant’s mask definitely looks like it was inspired by Kyle Rayner’s, which has proven a challenge to a few artists), which Doctor Who doesn’t usually do, so there’s not much to compare it to in terms of similarly premised stories. As it pointed out here, TDTWATW is heavily influenced by a famous novel right down to the episode title, and uses themes the show had recently explored at the time so there is a lot more to use as a comparison point. It even got a sequel in a comicbook miniseries called Ghost Stories.
Yea I don’t love this one either, but the Inception pastiche of Last Christmas is so trite, tonally confused, and rife with unforgivable Moffatisms that I think it’s the worst Christmas Special of the modern series (haven’t seen all the Chibnall specials, though… maybe one of those is worse?).
Does everyone Really hate this special though? I loved it. Granted, I'm a huge Narnia fan, and the ending is similar to the ending of Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang which I also love, so I could be biased here. I dunno. It's simple to understand, which is perfect for a Christmas special because a lot of individuals within a family will have to watch it regardless of whether or not they keep up to date with the rest if the show, and it doesn't take itself too seriously. Also, this isn't a power of love ending. Madge isn't able to carry the trees through the time vortex because of love, its because she is a biological mother, so she is literally able and experienced in carrying life inside her. Reg only gets saved by accident, because obviously a grieving widow is going to think of her husband when she thinks of home, and they were in the time vortex. Lovey dovey doesn't equal love saves the day.
Honestly? I love your reviews and although I agree with much of this one, I take issue with two points. First - the children - their acting, to me, was on point, especially Cyril. I raised 3 children, and believe me - that’s how they behave (though not all the time, thank goodness)! I’ve noticed that you are very open about your dislike of children, which is fine, but I think it colours your judgment whenever they are featured. Second, the Happy Ending - this was absolutely essential for a Christmas Special centred around a family, and one that would be watched by families at Christmas. I completely got the logic of Madge and the trees’ life-force lighting Reg’s way home (similar to the wonderful scene in Apollo 13, where Commander Lovell talks about how his life was saved by iridescent algae after he lost his lights). Yes, it’s fantastical, but isn’t Doctor Who? One of the main points of a story like this one is to impart joy, whimsy, and wonder for all those children sitting around with their families at Christmas, not to make everyone miserable by permanently killing off dad. Doctor Who has plenty of dark episodes. For me, although it’s by no means my favourite episode, it did what I expected and deserves a better review.
... You are literally made a defending the despised about defending this episode from the "go woke, go broke" people have... Hell, in this video you are those people.
I wonder why Moffat always feels the need to copy classic Christmas stories for ALL of his specials? XD (Well, maybe not all but seriously, the first two at least!?)
I liked that special as I did the others, but I am biased and stan Dr Who even the new one. Now the recent Flux series was the only good Jodi Whitaker series but that is Chris Chibnall's fault not her as she can act. Chris Chibnall did the Dinosaurs in Space episode under Matt Smith Dr Who and it shows how bad at storytelling he is.
This special is meh for me. Like it's not so horrifically bad that it frustrates me but then it's not good either. it's just fine. like its cute and sweet but it's very bland. Meh is the best word to use to describe it i feel.

Although, I'm not certain as to why the Doctor thought such a gift would be a good idea for curious kids. The Doctor didn't seem to know the box led to Androzani Minor, so that aspect of the story always confused me.
Ohhh nice a sponsorship. Most deserved. Keep it up! I also never seen this special.
Carbon Fiber realness! 💯
Actually...
Yes it was really bad!
However.
It did have a Lancaster bomber in it.
And Just Jane which is beiing restored in Lincs.
So for that reason alone I can watch the Lancaster bits.
Always nice to see Just Jane on the TV
Just to check though, when is this episode set?
I think Harbo says 1941,
If that’s the case, as you know, the Lanc. Doesn’t come into general service until 1942.
Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey I suppose
But yes I have to agree, major love for the Lancaster being featured
@@eagleclaw899 Good morning.
I enjoyed your comment and did not realise it was set in 41. I assumed around 44. It was still lovely to see the Lanc. At least it gave youngsters a view if it that might have never heard of it.
As you say, 41 was to early. Maybe he should have been flying a Manchester?
@@spitfiremark1a768 Maybe so, if so. Best of luck to him. And I understand why they used the iconic lancaster, and I'm not even sure if there's any surviving examples of Manchesters or Wellingtons
@@eagleclaw899 No Manchesters. Not many wete prodiced and I thonk production fuselages were converted to Lancasters. I think there is only one Wellington, and that is at Hendon. From memory that aircraft was used in the Dambisters film.
I didnt forget about it, becuase apparantly the ABC just simply love to adore to stream this episode live all the time. The rare occasion Doctor Who is on live and my family wants to watch it, it ALWAYS seems to be this godawful special.
Tree-people or Treople?
I have a beautiful Italian leather wallet which I’ve had since my 18th birthday and 11 years on it’s still perfect. I hope to never misplace/lose it and I love it
Wtf
@@colemacgrath2005 what?
My issue with wokeness comes from Chibnall and his clumsy writing. Back when this aired it was a tad clumsy at times, but mostly little different from previous DW history, but Chibbs really cannot be subtle or effective in most areas under his influence, which is made more obvious when he is actually able to do good writing. Oh well, he's gone now, and looking forward to the new era.
Two years later. Hows that RTD treatment holding up?
Is it just me or does Bill Bailey look like both Bernard Hill and Bruce McGill?
I remember this more The Next Doctor.
such a horrible taste
I have a lot I could say about this episode but I can pretty much sum it up with 2 words: nauseatingly twee.
Bill Bailey deserved more
Can't say I'd forgotten this one. Though I wish I had.
4:31 no we're not, we're a species operating within an economic system built on endless growth, do not essentialise the self destructive flaws of capitalism to the human species.
The return of Doctor mysterio is wayyyy worse than this, never understood why this special gets more hate than that one
This one was OK. The Doctor Mysterio episode was bollocks.
Debatable. Dr Mysterio had many amazing Dad jokes in there.
Actually... It's always been my favourite Christmas episode.
Permanently deleted this ep from memory
Is it just me or did this video change title 3 times
Yea I don’t love this one either, but the Inception pastiche of Last Christmas is so trite, tonally confused, and rife with unforgivable Moffatisms that I think it’s the worst Christmas Special of the modern series (haven’t seen all the Chibnall specials, though… maybe one of those is worse?).
5:07 meat bad, eat ze bugs
Lmao schizo
@@ajprop99 take your meds
I don't care if the show is left. It's always been politically left, I care that the story telling was so bad.
It wasnt 'left' it was blatantly sexist.
In response to the go woke go broke thing, the political landscape at the time of this episode was not the same as the one today.
And the words meaning changed.
Outnumbered mum was the best part of the story
For me, although it’s by no means my favourite episode, it did what I expected and deserves a better review.
jokes on you, i remember this one!
I forgot this exists but it’s always been in the back of my head
I liked that special as I did the others, but I am biased and stan Dr Who even the new one. Now the recent Flux series was the only good Jodi Whitaker series but that is Chris Chibnall's fault not her as she can act. Chris Chibnall did the Dinosaurs in Space episode under Matt Smith Dr Who and it shows how bad at storytelling he is.
This special is meh for me. Like it's not so horrifically bad that it frustrates me but then it's not good either. it's just fine. like its cute and sweet but it's very bland. Meh is the best word to use to describe it i feel.
