- This is not an ordinary interview about his music, this is an extremely personal interview with Niklas Kvarforth. He talks about his background, the story of Shining, family, mental state, torture, cannibalism, Nattramn, old friends and why he loves Kent so much! And some super crazy shit that is just Niklas! We love you man.
This interview was recorded when we made the movie "In the Shadow of the Horns" where you can see more about this and other crazy stories related to extreme metal music.
The movie "In the Shadow of the Horns" is about occultism, mutilation, satanism, true crime (not the Norwegian stuff) and extreme music. We dig deep into the minds of metal bands and untold true crime stories, edited in a new way. We travelled the world to interview these bands: Rotting Christ, Asagraum, Necrophobic, Sólstafir, Gravespawn, Martyrium, Nordjevel, Shining, Misþyrming, Sahhar, Nervosa, Auðn.

BEST BM interview ever!!! Thank you for clearing up the confusion and getting his word out! This man is someone I can understand too well; one who came from a living hell that cannot be escaped and who sees the world as it is. He has an existentialism like that of Nietzsche coupled with misanthropy for the stupidity and fragility of humanity. I support his message of facing objective ideas behind suicide over subjective ones. Throwing these concepts in people's face and making them visceral is a true art that should not be seen negatively but rather as a means to grow. It takes monumental effort to overcome these things and become proactive. One of my greatest beliefs is that one climbing from a deep hole seeking to reach level-ground will have achieved inexplicable feats in their journey even though they will feel constantly that it is to their own detriment and devoid of any progress as it induces great suffering, whilst suicide is generally an easy way out. This is life - not fair and brutal. When life gives you lemons as they say. Anyway! Sorry to ramble and thank you for being one of so very few exceptional people in this world!

Niklas is one hell of a character. When you meet him, you don't know what version you're gonna get. But I see he's in a much better mood now, so that's good. Fantastic interview.

I admire this guy so much, as well as the opposite, but I never judge too harshly, because I share a very similar illness. I wanted to sniff a ball and chill with him when he played here, but I got too drunk, ended up punching him on stage, and then passing out in the streets of Toronto.
Even though I punched him, he gave me a fist bump when I went crazy for "Submit to Self Destruction".
Dude, I love this guy so much. He's a comedic genius, and I've learned the most as a musician from him.

Wow! I usually don't like watching interviews because I think music is music and private life is private life. But this was amazing, so I couldn't stop watching. Your questions were placed well and you always came back to the lyrics. I'm so much interested in the backgrounds of Shining. After a depression I thought, this music would almost have killed me. Later I realized that it has saved me instead, touched my heart under the mantle of senselessness. I'm not sure if this was the intention behind it. :) I hope he's not in trouble for using your card - and you as well, of course.

When I listen to Niklas I know he's telling the truth, he's honest, no bullshit here, and he takes his music to perfection. I love Shining and I'm glad to see he has stabilized emotionally. I am bipolar msyself and suffering from drepressions. I know the place he's in. Thanks for this great interview.

Genuinely interesting person and that is a very rare thing these days. But credit to you Lise for an interview is only as good as the one that is interviewing.. you sparked his interest so he talked to you, if there's a bad journalist then it'll translate to a bad interview overall.

The man brags about how many people had killed themselves because of Shining, but does he ever realize how many people were saved by his music? Depressive music makes listeners feel seen and understood. There are other things that make me suicidal, like seeing stupid people being happy.
