Anyone still watching... Filter and Grit controls were cranked on the Timeline... that's why it was dark, mushy and (bucket loss) noisy. Not a good/fair comparison.
I don't think anyone is still watching. In the video, I was using a saved preset and the knobs on the device didn't correspond to the values that were saved.
what year did you buy your dmm? I have one like yours but I am considering selling it to get a timeline because of its versatility. I also find that the DMM can suck a bit of tone even when turned off. (takes a bit of high end and clarity for the guitar's sound...just my POV) It would be nice to hear your thoughts/recommendations.
memory man to me is more stereo lush sounding .And it just sounds more natural .I've always been a analog man I guess when it comes to my delay effects.
Great demo I don't think you can go wrong either way. There are certainly noticeable differences, but they both sound pretty amazing. I've got a dirtbag(a DMM I built my self using NOS Panasonic MN3005), which I wont be letting go. I also have a timeline on the way. I'm actually impressed at how well the timeline simulates the headroom you get on a DMM by running at 15V. Not quite the same, but great sounding nonetheless. I suspect without having them side by side, few people would be able to tell them apart. Thanks again for a great demo.
@fendertwin777 Hi! Sorry, about the Strymon or the Eventide? I only have the Eventide, I could try to demo it when I arrive home next week... As for the TimeLine all I know is what I found out on the internet. But I find funny that I haven´t seen a demo of the Timefactor using the freeze function (as easy as pressing the middle footswitch).
Thank You for taking the time to program and set this up, it truly is a service and I am grateful. I am going back and forth between the strymon timeline, MemoryMan and the Boss re-201... cash is an issue but what I have learned is that the timeline can generate many tones and be it's own instrument if you wanna get geeky? I have the El Capistan and dig but not sold, what is your take kind sir? peace
Hi, Love your demo, I also own an old DMM that I'm happy with, I have some Line 6 delays that I'm pretty happy with (not as much). I'm in search of something to add to my small pedal board to sit next to the Memory man (for slightly longer delay the DMM can't do). Would you recommend the TimeLine? how about the El Capistan? Any thoughts? I mainly need 2 delay times to play most things, so 2 pedals would do. Awesome tone man!
@cloisterx3 Thanks man. It's some kind of Em. I think it was index finger on A string 7th fret and pinky on B string 8th fret. G string open. D string muted. That's from memory. I don't have a guitar in front of me at the moment ... but that should get you in the ballpark.
Hey I see you're using a pedaltrain pt-pro (i think) and that case looks like it's custom made. Any idea where I can get one of these? Also if it is a custom case, is it very heavy?
@stubacca416 Thanks man. The only thing that has me even considering knocking off the DMM is it's size. I would really like to downsize my board! I've only played with the looper for about 10 min. I've never been much of a looper guy as in the past I have a hard time getting my splices timed properly. That said, I've seen some TimeLine looper vids already that have me wanting to learn this feature. Hopefully in the future I'll be able to knock one out.
@Lemure333 It's hard to say. I really dig the Memory Man and sold the TimeLine. I'm thinking about picking up another el Capistan, because I really enjoyed that pedal when I had it.
@klauslehner @ChickenRapist It is stock. The black dots are the rubber feet I removed to place velcro on the bottom. I may have it modded in the future as I am only getting about 380ms of delay time at it's max.
@cosmogang Never know bro! It just looks out of place with those so I was thinking that it COULD be some unknown mod for the DMM. I've found weird effects in the most unsuspecting places!
If the DMM was modded for humbuckers it would take your overload problem away. For me the overload was never useful and always sounded harsh. I never really understood how people could bare the overload sound of the DMM anyway. After that mine became unbeatable for what it does.
$200 will definatly not be enough for a timeline.. the dd-20 is a pretty good delay from what I hear though, so why not check it out (if you haven't already that is)
@fendertwin777 Except for the Freeze feature of the Eventide wich is amazing for creating textures with 2 time signatures at once and can be mangled to extreme on the fly.
@iceman91291 I'm not sure what year my DMM is. Probably a late 90s to mid 2000s. I traded it for a Nova delay. If versatility is what you're looking for, I don't think the TimeLine can be beat. I myself ended up sticking with the DMM and selling the TimeLine. It was a lot more than I was looking for. I ended up going with a Diamond Memory Lane Jr for a compact digital delay with tap tempo to pair with the DMM. I haven't noticed much tone loss, but I'm running a buffer at the front of my chain.
Obviously the DMM is the winner .The first minute of your tests is enough to make the decision.The Strymon sounds terrible .It produces a weak sound (in same conditions s the DMM.... and more than this i think that anyone who owns ears should be able to hear clearly that every note it produces appears always noisy (some awful digital artifact .... that unbearable dirt is very clear in your tests ...and ..simply horrible ...BRRR ..I hate that thing :! Thanks a lot for this great demo.
+Dominik Georges The noise is ADDED on purpose to mimic the noise of some old analog delays, especially at longer time settings. You CAN TURN IT OFF. The "GRIT" knob is set FAIRLY HIGH on the Strymon THROUGHOUT THIS VIDEO. The Strymon is capable of producing PRISTINE, NOISELESS repeats. The DMM IS beautiful, but the Strymon can get very close, plus do a whole lot of other things. - Check out some of their videos. - By all means, keep your DMM, but I don't think you're being quite fair to the Strymon, if your problem with it is the noise, based on THIS video, where THE NOISE IS CRANKED.
@stubacca416 I absolutely love the DMM had on for a number of years......then I bought a Diamond Memory Lane 2......that was the pedal that finally killed the DMM for ethereal sounds. I have literally tried every delay with the exception of the Moog Frog and the Empress Super D all other high end delay analog and digital and my two fav are ML2 for analog (buy a long shot) and the new Timeline for digital. I remember the day I a/b the ML2 and the DMM......I was shocked at the difference.
Well, I think I'm more of a Strymon fan really. I follow Strymon on FaceBook and Twitter, but I don't follow Electro Harmonix. The DMM is just that good of a pedal.
I read a great explanation by a sound engineer of analog vs. digital delays Analog = time forward - all the echoes are new and different from each other Digital = time backward - all the echoes are identical - hence a snapshot of the past
They both sound excellent, I have a timeline and love it but that memory man does sound a little warmer and theres just something special about it
nice board dude. i agree with you completely, nothing beats a DMM
best timeline videos on you tube!! keep em coming

Hi man, great video, thanks you very much.
How do you connect the pedal ? Is stereo essential ?
@HeartfeltDawn That's an incredible deal! Great find.
you have the filter on halfway on the strymon, that's why it was muddy bud!
i guess it's quite off topic but does anybody know a good site to stream newly released movies online ?
@Gunner Kayden flixportal :)
@Jace Garrett thank you, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) Appreciate it!!
@Gunner Kayden glad I could help =)

strymon for the win. love you vids bro, I love em
What mods are on your DMM btw? There's those 3 small black things on top of the word 'Deluxe'.
the Vox amp looks so good in white!
I think the DMM will never be replaced, but the Timeline does a great job and they would make a fine pair. The DMM wins in this demo for sure.
I'm not sure of the year. It's one of the later models with the external power supply.
@cloisterx3
Thanks man. It's some kind of Em. I think it was index finger on A string 7th fret and pinky on B string 8th fret. G string open. D string muted.

What is the riff at 2:37 from? It's one I heard a few times before in ambient guitar videos. Any help would be welcome :)
If you put a preamp into the timeline fx loop, it will be more similar.
Man, you got some great pedals! They deserve better patch cables!
I'm just referring to the Memory Man, the POG and the Holy Grail Reverb.
I wasn't trying to say that you were biased in the review.
How are you powering the Timeline?
@stubacca416
Thanks man. The only thing that has me even considering knocking off the DMM is it's size. I would really like to downsize my board!

I still think the el Capistan is their best pedal. Something magical about it.
what were the settings on the timeline at the beginning of the vid
boss dd-20 vs strymon timeline? what do you prefer? i have 200 dolars?
Is you DMM modded by Howard Davis?
Me gusta el strymon. Para la próxima si quiere hacer una comparación. Separar los dos pedales, no conectarlos en cadena.
hey what cables are you using for your pedals???
Did you see the Freeze, too? That's 4 EHX pedals.
I bought that case off of ebay about 10 years ago. It was pretty inexpensive, maybe around $100? It's not that heavy or heavy duty either.
How about you try a Maxon AD999 against that memory man .
@ChickenRapist uhhh.....dude....pretty sure those are just some rubber feet.....like the kind that come on the bottom of a new pedal....
hope you win the compressor!
how are you recording the audio in conjunction with the video recording?
+Luis Torres I recorded the audio on my computer and the video on my camera.
And the Oscar for best performance in a comedy goes to - mistersnaredrum - for the movie "Head Up His Ass"
Great video imo
I'd love to. Have one I can borrow?
strymons sell out in shops in like hours of them arriving and they sell on ebay for like $450 second hand cos they are in that much demand
I wonder if your settings on the Timeline are causing some of the difference?
@ChickenRapist True, you never do know! Always worth asking I guess - might just find out something pretty cool!
Cheers!
So the Timeline's not so good parked in a drive then?
@Lemure333 It's hard to say. I really dig the Memory Man and sold the TimeLine. I'm thinking about picking up another el Capistan, because I really enjoyed that pedal when I had it.
what kind of pedal board is that?
@klauslehner @ChickenRapist It is stock. The black dots are the rubber feet I removed to place velcro on the bottom.

Any details on your memory man? Is it modded in any way?
$200 will definatly not be enough for a timeline.. the dd-20 is a pretty good delay from what I hear though, so why not check it out (if you haven't already that is)
to me the DMM sounds more 3d, dynamic and deep in this video...
In this video, I had it connected mono. In my other videos I'm using the TimeLine in stereo.
@fendertwin777 Except for the Freeze feature of the Eventide wich is amazing for creating textures with 2 time signatures at once and can be mangled to extreme on the fly.
Is that the Pt-PRO?
What are you powering that Memory Man with?
how do you figure
Which you wont because until a few weeks ago they were on backorder which means they cost $600 on eBay.....lowest I've seen is $375
@iceman91291

i'd give an acceptance speech but it'd be a bit muffled. i liked your description of delays though. did you ever read analogman's monkeys description?
What year DMM is that?
@BriansSecretDoor
Yes it is.
Don't worry. I've rewired my board with custom patches since then!
I sold the TimeLine. Still have the DMM.

sounds great, putting me to sleep!
I've got better cables now. I should do an update video.
He turned on the pog
@johndc819
Whatever random ones I can find.
@DemoColorScheme I can't wait for my DMM to get back from repairs.
@777jordan
Thanks! Me too.
I don't have anything that can do the shimmer.
Well, I think I'm more of a Strymon fan really. I follow Strymon on FaceBook and Twitter, but I don't follow Electro Harmonix. The DMM is just that good of a pedal.
Yes.
New, they're $450. Unless you can find a used one somewhere for REALLY cheap.
I love my ad999 so much that I bought two of them .
Dude, you can't get a strymon timeline for $200
I read a great explanation by a sound engineer of analog vs. digital delays
Analog = time forward - all the echoes are new and different from each other
Digital = time backward - all the echoes are identical - hence a snapshot of the past
BULLSHIT
Now set the DMM to reverse delay!!!
You sound like Kevin from the office
i like memory man
memory man ,even though its louder.
I prefer the memory man.
For real! I've since soldered my own cables.
You can check out out a picture here: cl dot ly/FpLx (replace the dot with .)
1000$ of delays, 6$ of cables :D
lol just noticed that, funny, great video though
Can't tell you're an electro harmonix fan or anything lol
You play in church don't you? ;)
strymon can..
What Volume pedal are you using?
