Fingers crossed the weather clears for you guys, she's gunna start eating fuel when/if you get on the sand, lucky you've got the pig with the safari with you for a top up 😄🤣
My mates call my pig with a now 36L usable safari tank the Exxon valdez. .... not sure if that's complimentary but they are very nice to me when they run out of gasoline
Yep, this rain has been pretty intense right across the eastern half. My Africa Twin has been garaged for a year now, apart from the odd trip to the shops to give it a run out. Same for my 350exc-f.
Those fuel figure are weird i just did a trip in the Flinders around arkaroola on my 2019 ktm350exc race bike with the same tank as you 14 50 sprockets cruising on max 80 kmh and I got consecutive returns of 26.5 kms a litre.
Yes, I’m wondering the same thing. I’m heading out on a trip next month and was considering adding the screen so I’d love to know why you elected to remove it. Thank you.
Two reasons - airflow and safety. I wanted to maximise airflow when in the dunes. Last time on the DR it was mid-20's and I remember working very hard and being very hot 🥵. As for safety, going over the 'bars could mean the screen goes inside the helmet (seen this happen). I've been over the bars in sand so just wanted to eliminate this risk.
Do you think the fuel may have been hung up on one side of the tank? The usually rely on the motion of the bike to splash it across. Going steady on a flat track into Birdsville would have been ideal conditions to do it. My 500 (17 model) delivers about the same economy as you indicated. It’s been consistently thirstier than my 701 which is a hell of a lot heavier, especially loaded. Chalk it up to normal I suppose. I have the same IMS tank as you so will take note of what happens at refill time a bit more closely.
Hi Brenden. Yep that was exactly my thoughts - the straight road. On the consumption, anything less than 20km/L is almost unheard of for me. On reflection it was a windy day, maybe a headwind? And I think removing the screen caused more drag (over my body) which added to fuel consumption. I'll have more to say on this when I (eventually) do a wrap-up vid.
501 is about what you put up. On a small adventure bike there are many variables that affect fuel figures. Send your ecu to Fuel Torque, Rex will get it running spot on for your needs.
Sony X3000 camera has a mic port on it. Into that I plug a splitter, then two external mics, one for voice and one on the ear-speaker to pick up radio comms.
@@keithjob cheers that would be great. I also have a 500 and do quite abit of lite adventure. I get nervous about my gearbox with all the vibrations. Then again your bike is a testament to ktm reliability
Must be, that bakery building wouldn't have ben cheap. Virtually every single person who travels up that road would stop in, as there's nothing else around.

Looks like a great start to the trip - would love to do that with you boys on my 500. Look forward to part 2

Dam hay, heartbreak stuck at the pub for a few days, hope it dried up for you :)
You lads on the 500’s are tough, I can’t even imagine touring on my ktm500 such a Vibey uncomfortable bike for anything more than a couple hours 😅
Get a “seat concepts” seat, it’s a game changer
You could replace the stock seat with a block of wood and it'd be better 😜
I have the low seat on my 350. It's been a great help in getting me to ride standing on the pegs.
Long way to go to drink beers ! but still worth it haha
How to join such a ride?👏🤙🏻 beautiful ride and scenery.
My 18 model running 15/47 gearing gets 23-24 kph for those speeds with 20 kg luggage. You have more weight though.

Why'd you decide to take off the windscreen for this trip? Cheers mate, great content.

@@dougiep8464 I have one of Rex’s ecu’s. Helps in sand when loaded up and working it.
Yeah, need to tilt that bike so the fuel goes to the other side. Bit heavier with all that luggage.
My 350 gets quite thirsty at higher revs. Looks like the 500 is the same.
Just wondering are you using an external microphone setup or just the GoPro microphone?

Running out of fuel is a rookie mistake. how did you let that happen?
Ahhh yeaaahhhhhhh.... 😬
2009 500 only gets 10kpl.
I wish I could get poor mileage like your bike. 😀
My 2012 does almost double that. You might have some other problems like carburetor/jetting issues. Mine is EFi.
Awsome keith your always so
Well prepped. Do you run a Cush drive rear hub?
No I don't. One of these days I'll do a video on why I don't.
@@keithjob cheers that would be great. I also have a 500 and do quite abit of lite adventure. I get nervous about my gearbox with all the vibrations. Then again your bike is a testament to ktm reliability
So far it looks like a perfect 690/701 trip. What tires are you using?
D606 rear, MC360 front.
AS they say, if you ride a KTM, make sure you bing a support truck.
So a bakery in a ghost town 🤷♂️. Are they actually making any money?
Must be, that bakery building wouldn't have ben cheap. Virtually every single person who travels up that road would stop in, as there's nothing else around.
@@keithjob Yeah it doesn't look cheap at all lol. Be safe out bud 🙏
Stuck at the pub drinking beers. Could be a lot worse.
