*I'm afraid uploading at 50 or 60FPS does no longer trigger VP9! You have to upload in either 2K or 4K resolution (regardless of refresh rate) to get VP9 on your videos*
I confirm it, a few days ago, this method stopped working (50 or 60 fps), the only ways to get VP9, at the moment, are 2: uploading at 1440p or above, or doing: "Save as new video" on RUclips Editor, but I found that is a fake VP9 with this last method, because the quality doesn't change, maybe it's even worse than AVC.
I just uploaded a video yesterday and I wondered about the poor quality, much worse than the original file. So i discovered your videos about this topic and now I'm sad because RUclips changed it again :( But I appreciate your work about this topic, you gained a new subscriber :) Looking forward for updates ^^
Even your links to VP9 encoded clips play with AVC1 according to Stats for Nerds. I doubt it's my connection as it's a Gigabit connection via fibre-optic.
I just found out that 2048x1152 resolution is still 1080p, but. also triggers VP9! I have tested 120 FPS and lower resolutions like 1366x768 and 1920x1080, but these don't trigger VP9. So the minimum resolution seems to be 2048x1152, not 2560x1440. It also saves a little more storage than what 2560x1440 takes up.

For real life footage, upscaling my 1080p video to 4K - and WATCHING it in 4K - is the only way I found that gives decent looking video on RUclips. Even though it says it's VP9, the 1080p version looks like a draft copy (softer, less detail) than a 1080p render on my computer. Unfortunately most people won't switch to 4K to watch videos. Dude it's crazy, this is giving me a headache. I've got some videos that upload with VP9 even thought they're 1080p60fps, and some of them decided to go with avc1 for no reason. And trying to upscale it to 4k makes the 1080p footage on YT look more like 720p
@@MashBro Just gotta be careful with 60fps coz some devices can't play 1080p at that fast framerate. Having said that, 60fps is gonna be the best choice for fast action.
You can really just normally render your videos at 60fps and they will be processed in VP9 after an hour or two. Note that directly after uploading videos will be in AVC until VP9 has finished re-encoding
Thanks for this. Couldn't figure out why my vids were so blurry even though it looked great on my desktop. Now it makes sense. Huge upgrade in quality.
Two things: 1. When I upload 4K (upscaled 1080p), I have no option to choose 4K, it's still max. 1080p with avc1-codec and the video looks bad. On my PC they look good and clean without any pixel-fixel. 2. When I check out other channels with 1080p using the same avc1-codec, the videos look amazing. Any explanation guys? :)
You have likely messed up the resolution if you rendered at 4K but the video only shows as 1080p on YT. Did you double check the resolution of the rendered video?
@@TechGuides my screen resolution is stretched resolution and im having the same problem as jlx can you help me what resolution for my obs canvas resolution do I need for 1440p or 4k for a vp9 video
Unfair to compare VP9 with h264, go for h265. The main issue is that YT re encode everything not in the native VPx format, it ends up as a lower quality for sure, doesn't mean avc1 is the problem here.
I'm confused, this video has nothing to do with the uploaded file format. All I'm talking about are the different methods RUclips will re-encode that uploaded video and yes, their AVC settings suck donkey ballz haha
@@TechGuides You compare VP9 and H264 from VLC info or something, to say VP9 is better with less data used (which is untrue and depends on the parameters you're using etc. but anyway) If YT took the H264 natively no one would complain about quality, that's why VP9 is better in that case because the stream is uploaded natively.
Hey Tech Guides it has been a while since I had left a comment but I saw good improvements when it came to the quality of my RUclips videos when I forced the VP9 codec on my videos I just wanted to say thanks for the useful information that you provided I couldn't of really done it without you man!
Any idea why a video that's 1080p 24fps would get VP9? Also, if you're uploading in 4K, do you get a better bitrate using 60fps or is it the same at 30?
You'll get a better bitrate at 60fps. Some popular videos get the VP9 treatment or at some times it was possible to get VP9 on all videos. For recent videos with low views: no idea
Don't render in VP9. It takes ages and won't really improve your video quality on RUclips as far as I could tell. Btw. it does not matter what codec you use to upload in, RUclips always re-encodes your video.
@@JarnoSuni1 The fact is that RUclips, regardless of whether you follow their recommendations or not, will still recode your video and spoil the quality. It turns out that you take video from the camera, edit, encode, download and again RUclips encodes.
@@Enulen OK, here is a video uploaded March 2020. Dude has THREE subs. 1920x1080 30fps. He has the VP09 codec... What gives??? ruclips.net/video/W5V-2xGAN_I/видео.html

What do you mean, no effect? You're not getting VP9 at 1440p? If so, you either didnt wait for RUclips to fully process your video or are using Safari (which does not support VP9)
I've also found that well streaming RUclips restricts the possible bitrate of the streams to 6K if streaming at 1080P or lower, I find I have to stream in 1440p in order to unlock the bitrate and stream at 9 k, now I'm also wondering if the codac it's different as well when livestreaming in 1080p vs 1440p?
Question if of course you still read old comments. How to force RUclips put on your videos AV codec instead of VP9? I notice that some videos has AV (or I should say AV1) codecs but others has VP9.. so which is better now 2024?
YOU CAN BYPASS THAT ISSUE BY STRETCHING YOUR 1080p FILE TO 2K. I did it with Format Factory - H.264 Codec, 15k Bitrate (same as my original video) and manually setting the resolution to 2560x1440. Surprisingly, no quality loss is to be observed to the naked eye ! Problem solved, get rekt RUclips ;-) EDIT: Whichever Software you use for re-encoding, USE 2-PASS ENCODING The process takes significantly more time, but you won't lose any colours, as opposed to single pass.
@@TechGuides I'm genuinely surprised it even works in the first place ^^' but no visible quality loss?! I thought upscaling was an urban legend, and expected the end result to look like modern art before I tried ... x) Not only glad that it's a real working thing ... indeed, it also allows to get that VP9 compression, because let's be honest, AVC looks awful, especially on any kind of 3D games ! :C
I am a roughly small channel with 234 subscribers and one of my subscribers Jo Do brought me here. I upload straight from my PS4 and wonder why my videos get really pixelated at times parts of my videos. The video always look fine on my PS4 and PC but on RUclips the videos won't look as good and now I know that I need to get a capture card since VP9 doesn't support 720p @ 30FPS in order to improve the quality of my videos Thanks! And you have earned yourself a new subscriber!
Thanks a lot! I'm going to try this out on my next video. I was noticing very bad texture quality on my recent videos. Especially when there was a lot of movement in the gaming video. I compared a single frame from the original 60fps 1080p video to the YT one, and it was very worse.. Hope that 4k rendering will indeed fix this.
i upload in 1080 and 2.7k at 60 fps and still only get the avc1 codec. is it possible that once my channel grows my videos will re render to vp9 codec?
Same. What I menaged to figure out is that if you edit your video with RUclips tools, the video becomes vp9. There is still some quality loss, but not as much as for avc
I upload everything now in 4k and RUclips still only seems to give me the AVC encoder. Most recent 4k upload that's very movement intensive looks awful! I don't know what to do to fix it
Every 4K video will eventually encode in VP9 (if the video is over an hour it will take 1-2 days). Just don't use Safari to watch as it does not support VP9 at all
@@TechGuides this! apple sucks in my opinion...i have uploaded 3 hour classic doom video in 4k resolution and it was finished the processing after one full week + few days...so if the video is long it will take many hours/days/weeks to processing the video so it is better to put the video in private mode first and when its finished processing then make it normal video 😀😃 vp9 is amazing and good quality online video...google chrome is good for vp9
I'm not quite sure the problem, does your recording equipment have any settings for quality or performance? Mine was a simple refresh the page and leave for a bit, come back and it was fixed, I could do up to 720p, adjust your game quality? My game I was playing was extremely high quality (Subnautica)
As for today upload 08/28/2022, my recent 1080p@60 fps still is in AVC. Instead my other one also uploaded around the same time is encoded in VP9 by youtube, with an original 1440p / 4k quality@60 fps. It's alright for short content video, but for longer stuff you end up having huge files to upload.
I know new channels that gets VP9 1080p while my old channel doesn't get it, how do they do ? I checked the datas and I have more everything than them, how do they do ? Forcing 2k is painfull for the cpu and is a problem when you must render very long video with tons of editing :(
@@TechGuides Ty. Some tells the video get the vp9 when it gets tons of views, something I can't confirm. The only thing I know is I use the same software since 10 years, with the same setting for each render, I got vp9 before 2019 on full HD, not anymore. I get better result by re-incoding a full HD video to 4k (and losing quality in the process) than upload it and get the damn avc codec... to me the avc codec is similar to a jpeg quality 1/10 on photoshop. It totaly destroy the content, especially when you use motion blur effect, for static video showing only frames (like a stop motion) avc could be ok, but it's very specific, avc also gets better colors.
@@FoXMaSteR001 Yes, I confirm that the video gets the vp9 codec when it reaches a certain number of views. I just checked some videos on my channel. Interestingly, all shorts are with vp9. Thank you, this vid really helps. I have been so upset at how much worse my videos have looked once uploaded compared to other videos of a similar quality and resolution. RUclips really screws over creators , like myself, who are just starting out but rely on image quality as part of our business - in other words, RUclips basically sets us up to fail. So your tip will really help.
So I recently uploaded a video that was supposed to be a 4K file on iMovie When I got it uploaded it made it down to 1080p with the avc1 code. What am I doing wrong if you can help?
It would be nice to upload a video to RUclips for the sole purpose of downloading it in AV1. Then I wouldn't need to reencode my videos on my own computer.
I want to ask, i recorded a game in 1080p then i made it 1440p so i can get the vp9 it worked but for someone that will only watch 1080p he will pretty much see the pixelation anyways (using phone), unless he chooses 1440p quality to watch? What to do about that? so only the people who can watch 1440p will get to see the video at highest quality?
I noticed in the in this week: RUclips *won't encoding my videos to Vp9* (2560x1440@60Fps) as did until this week. I dunno what hapend. I tested it in the past days with 8-10 videos, and didn't got Vp9 even days later...
Same problem here. I posted 4 4k videos on youtube in the last 2 days and one of them got vp09, the other 3 avc. Maybe youtube is limiting the amount of 4k videos you can upload in a period of time?
@@arthurcassenaer5975 Today i tested with 4k (4096x2304) instead of 2560x1440. AVC only. I got VP9 always with my 2560x videos until this week. Now it's shows opus audio with avc video.
I did read through the comments to see that 720p & 1080p @ 50 or 60 fps does not work anymore! But anything @ 1440p and above at 60fps does. My quality has really been increased crazy amounts!
so um, i upload 1080p60 videos and for some reason, even when encoded in VP9, the videos i upload always uses avc1 instead of VP9, you might think youtube removed this feature, but then i saw many youtube videos (from, pewdiepie, tommyinnit, etc.) and all of them have 1080p60 videos, yet somehow their videos are encoded in VP9. is there something i need to know about this?
video codec on RUclips has nothing to do with the uploaded video codec. RUclips always re-encodes your videos so all that matters are resolution and popularity to get VP9
I rendered a short video in 4k 60fps, less than a minute long, then uploaded it, and got 4k 60fps option with the VP9 codec. After a day of waiting just in case it still needed processing, it still blurs out details. I compared this to the rendered video file on my PC where it looks absolutely crisp, but RUclips still compresses, making the quality bad. It's like there's no point uploading to 4k if RUclips is just going compress it even with VP9.
RUclips will always re-encode and thereby reduce the quality (and most obviously file size) of any uploaded video. They simply can't just serve the uploaded video file as many people would not be able to watch those. Compared with AVC, VP9 offers greatly improved video quality at generally even lower file size so thats what you should try to get on your videos
As recently as a few weeks ago, my 1080p/60FPS/25000k H264 videos were still being given the AVC1 codec by RUclips, that looks pixelated. Today I noticed my last video is actually VP9. I think it depends on how many people are watching your premieres/uploads?
I didn't test this in a while but I never managed to get a 1080p video to encode in VP9. Thats without any views though - very popular undoubtedly get the VP9 treatment ;)
I upload 1080p 60 and I steel got avc codec my only way is to export and upload my videos at 1440p to gain the double bitraite compression and the vp09 codec
Is there any update to this? I have uploaded videos at 4K, and still cannot get the VP9, and my video is very pixelated after upload. It looks perfect on my computer. Its only an issue after uploading to RUclips.
See here’s what’s happening to me. The raw file is recorded in 1080p right. After I’m done editing the video, I render in 1440p. (The raw file is recorded at 240 FPS because I can handle recording at that high fps and when it’s rendered in 60 FPS in Sony Vegas it’s really smooth). So I render in 60 FPS at 1440p and it looks very nice and smooth and clear when I play back the rendered file. So I upload it to RUclips. Since the file is 1440p, I do indeed get VP9. However, this is only on my computer. That’s because on my computer I can choose the option 1440p60fps. But then, on my phone, when I play the video, it looks extremely pixelated. Mind you, the video has a lot of movement, so that could be a contributing factor, but on my pc the video looks decently clear on RUclips. On my phone I can only go up to 1080p. However, there are others who have recorded the exact same game at 240 FPS with the exact same obs settings and then render in the exact settings I use and when I look at their videos on RUclips on my phone theirs is crystal clear compared to mine. Idk what to do.
I tried uploading my video with 2560x1440 with 60fps using Filmora. But when I uploaded my video on Yt, it still says av, not the VP09 codec. Any help?
My friend, hello, thank you for the method. It worked for me on the videos and my videos became very good quality, but I recently noticed that some people have few subscribers, not exceeding 300 or 400 subscribers, and they upload the videos in 1080p and RUclips gives them the format in vp09
I uploaded a video at 60fps and 1440p but I still didn't get VP9 on it. The game backgrounds also turned out a lot more pixelated/blocky. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Some of mine encode with vp9, and other choose the avc1 for seemingly no reason. The only difference between the two videos would be the file size. Would having a larger file size effect which encoder I end up with?
On top of exporting the video in 2k+, do you also have to watch it in 2k+ on youtube? Or can you just export it in 2k, upload it, then watch it in 1080p to trigger the vp09 codec?
What is this about uploading a video in 720 or 1080? I don't remember getting any option. Plus why would anyone choose to upload a video at a worser quality?
Up until my most recent video, uploading a 1440p was enough to trigger the flip to vp09, but my most recent video didn't flip over from apc1, even after almost 10 hours after upload. I wonder if RUclips caught on to the trick and has changed things again. Pisses me off that you have to be one of the "big boys" to get good video quality. I kind of wish there was another platform. Vimeo would be nice, but it's not as popular, and seems to be geared to corporate creators.

If you open stats for nerds on RUclips then note these codec numbers: For 1080p 30fps or lower H264: 137 VP9: 248 AV1 (not AVC) 399 For 1080p, 60, 50 or 48fps h264: 299 VP9: 303 AV1: 399 H264 looks the worst and also usually gives you 140 audio. VP9 is next and is much better, and unlocks Opus (webm) audio (251). AV1 is reserved for really popular (10 million+ views) videos and looks the nicest.
I play at 4k 60fps, down scale to 720p 60fps and upload at 720p 60fps, avc encoding still. Is using a three pc setup possible?
Try not making it too complicated ;) You currently only get VP9 if you upload at 1440p or 4K (or have a lot of views). If you have an Nvidia GPU than I would suggest to simply record on your gaming machine using Shadowplay (performance drop is minimal, 1-2% at max).

Thanks for this. Couldn't figure out why my vids were so blurry even though it looked great on my desktop. Now it makes sense. Huge upgrade in quality.
Two things:
@@TechGuides It worked now with 5K. The other 4K videos didn't show up as 4K. Super strange. The resolution was fine with both. Thank you! :)
Excellent, thank you for the nice feedback :)
Yep anytime man! :)
@@TechGuides Thank you^^

Gil Scharf accually apple doesnt support VP9 anymore
I'm uploading with 2K WebM format, there when i choose bitrate i choose 10mbps, I'm not getting more than this, but it took a lot longer to render
Don't render in VP9. It takes ages and won't really improve your video quality on RUclips as far as I could tell. Btw. it does not matter what codec you use to upload in, RUclips always re-encodes your video.
@@TechGuides h.264 is best or not, if i render in 2K with 30mbps bitrate?
It seems to me that for RUclips the main thing is less user costs + maximum benefit.
I wonder how using AVC helps in that respect? It is a proprietary codec and RUclips recommends using it for videos to be uploaded.
@@JarnoSuni1 The fact is that RUclips, regardless of whether you follow their recommendations or not, will still recode your video and spoil the quality. It turns out that you take video from the camera, edit, encode, download and again RUclips encodes.

I havent found a way to reliably force AV1 on RUclips. From my experience only large channels or very popular videos get the AV1 treatment

Problem solved, get rekt RUclips ;-)

Yes this was exactly me too.
i upload in 1080 and 2.7k at 60 fps and still only get the avc1 codec. is it possible that once my channel grows my videos will re render to vp9 codec?
Well, only if those specific videos get a lot of views. If you want guaranteed VP9, you need to render at 1440p or 4K.

So in conclusion, the codec the viewer experiences is down to the uploader, not the viewer' settings.
How about 23.976 fps 4k ?
Does the trimming trick still work (Enhancements, trim a sliver off the end, then save and youtube re-encodes to VP9)?
What about streaming. Way is some people streaming in 1080p@60 AVC1 and others 1080p@60 VP9.
An iPhone can produce Vp09 quality right? So can you just combine the vp09 from the camera to a avc1 youtube video?
video codec on RUclips has nothing to do with the uploaded video codec. RUclips always re-encodes your videos so all that matters are resolution and popularity to get VP9
If the size of AVC can be higher than vp9, what bandwidth is youtube, google llc trying to save?

4K videos will always trigger VP9, just gotta wait for RUclips to fully process
Any help?

On top of exporting the video in 2k+, do you also have to watch it in 2k+ on youtube? Or can you just export it in 2k, upload it, then watch it in 1080p to trigger the vp09 codec?
Watching in 1080p works well too it will still look better than AVC
What is this about uploading a video in 720 or 1080? I don't remember getting any option. Plus why would anyone choose to upload a video at a worser quality?
Up until my most recent video, uploading a 1440p was enough to trigger the flip to vp09, but my most recent video didn't flip over from apc1, even after almost 10 hours after upload. @@TiniSok_ Hey, no. I am still at 1080p like my recording video, as I have realized that many devices, especially Apple don't support VP9 and on all others, it's totally okay looking. I know visuals is all good, but what you present in your video is more important for others. I had a great talk with my little circle of followers and they all said they don't really care about VP9 or not, they care about the content in the first place. :)
For some reason when I render my video at 1440p and I upload it to RUclips it still just uploads the video at 1080p. Pls help.
If you open stats for nerds on RUclips then note these codec numbers:
For 1080p 30fps or lower
H264: 137
VP9: 248
AV1 (not AVC) 399
For 1080p, 60, 50 or 48fps
h264: 299
VP9: 303
AV1: 399
H264 looks the worst and also usually gives you 140 audio. VP9 is next and is much better, and unlocks Opus (webm) audio (251). AV1 is reserved for really popular (10 million+ views) videos and looks the nicest.
i still have avc on 60fps and 1440p how do i fix this
I play at 4k 60fps, down scale to 720p 60fps and upload at 720p 60fps, avc encoding still. I guess I have to stop uploading my vods from twitch and start recording from my elgato 4k pro, but that would mean I would use a third pc for that because I have the 4kpro on the steaming rig, and I'll need to buy another 4kpro. Is using a three pc setup possible?
Try not making it too complicated ;) You currently only get VP9 if you upload at 1440p or 4K (or have a lot of views). If you have an Nvidia GPU than I would suggest to simply record on your gaming machine using Shadowplay (performance drop is minimal, 1-2% at max).
is there a way we can force to upload 360 camera to use VP9? Whenever I upload a video with 5760 x 2880 resolution the end result is 1080s 😞
I uploaded a video in 60fps and ultra HD and it doesn't get vp9 what should I do?
Check description
I uploaded 2560x1440 and the codec still says avc. I already spent 4 days on trying to post this video, but can't live it blurry like this. Any other ideas how the codec could be changed to a good quality?
Your video is VP9 now! Videos that exceed one hour of length will definitely require a lot of time to fully process - like a few days
