For anyone confused this may help:
This is a version of Sudoku called Killer Sudoku and is a game mode in competition (Yes, they have those for sudoku. These are the rules:
All squares must have a 1-9
All rows must have a 1-9
The cages (dotted lines) cannot have two of the same numbers in them.
The numbers in each cage must add up to the number in the corner of each cage.
All killer sudoku puzzles also start with no numbers so it’s insanely difficult to start the solve.
I don’t care about likes, but please like so it can get to the top and can help people who are confused.

Thank you for choosing my puzzle and also thanks to everybody for the kind comments! I hope you had fun with it.
I probably should not have brought the upcoming WSC to the table. Just let me clarify for now, that I did not say anything about the difficulty to expect and nothing about the reasons why this puzzle will not be used. That's all pure speculation and I regret that little bit, especially given the catchy title of the video. On the other side, giving some small bits away so that people can start discussing and speculating is a good way to start the hype :-)
Seeing someone solving my puzzle and comment on the solving process is definitly a nice experience. It's very satisfying to see someone taking almost exactly the intended path. Of course there are smaller steps that can be done one way or another. But the general path is the same (ROT13):

I hope this partly answers the question how these puzzles are constructed, which is asked a lot in other comments: It's a lot like solving the puzzle again and again with small self-given constraints and making setups that leave enough variability. And of course a lot of Trial&Error and experience how to set up some constraints in a way that gives you a desired result. For everybody who wants to read a little bit more about puzzle creation, I can recommend the Puzzlecraft book by Mike Selinker and Thomas Snyder.
The idea for the start is not new, I have seen it multiple times before, even at competitions.
Sudoku puzzles and most of it's variants are very gentle in my experience: As long as you don't have an obvious contradiction on the board, it's almost always possible to complete the board to a valid Sudoku solution. That means, if you used up all information you already put into the grid, it is very unlikely that you have an obscure contradiction that you don't see immediately. So you can proceed and in the end it's most often harder to find clues that resolve all remaining pairs, than guaranteeing that there is at least one solution left. Also if nothing else helps you can always make the solution unique by giving plain digits. So generally Sudokus are a very nice type to start creating puzzles yourself.
(That's not true for types with lots of local interactions like Nonconsecutive. In a lot of cases you get unwanted "dots" towards the end, which sometimes you can't fix without starting all over. Nonconsecutive is veeery constrained, and you don't see all of the restrictions immediately.)
Last, if you really like Killer Sudokus and Sudoku variants based on sums, here are two older variants of mine, which were very well received by the solvers, so I can probably recommend trying them. (And while you are at it, I can of course also recommend checking out some of the other 4000 handcrafted puzzles we have at the puzzle portal of Logic Masters Germany right now. :-) )

That's very clever, but exceptionally difficult to spot for someone like me who is far from a killer sudoku expert. I managed to solve it only 15 minutes later thanks to all of the crazy logic I had semi-deduced around the grid from my earlier work, but I imagine that 40 minutes in a competition setting would put me in dead last.

      @christianbarnay2499 5 лет назад +10

@@featherozone Each column or row adds up to 45 (1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9).
So top row is 45, bottom row is 45, leftmost column is 45 and rightmost column is 45.
If you add them all together, you get a total of 180. But corner cells are counted twice in this total (top right corner is both in the top row and the rightmost column, etc.). So the actual total of the edge area is 180 - (sum of corners).
      So 180 - (sum of corners) = 28+12+22+14+23+17+20+10=146.

i really struggle with getting the killer sudokus started, but once a couple of the early hurdles are identified (eg that mirrored 7 in the top right - without that being pointed out, i would have been stuck forever!) i really enjoy getting through these. That early arithmetic though - and using the geometry of the puzzle to figure out the sum value of the overhang cells ... still a bit beyond me! Love these videos, though - such a fantastic way to be shown the techniques. And I love how genuinely you adore these puzzles, how beautiful and astounding they are! Thank you for sharing

The initial step to get numbers into the grid is not found on the sudokuwiki killer solver, and thats definately some sort of technique that could be used to solve hard killers, finding a set of cells that form a single neat set of rows and columns to find the total value of the overlap... Could definately be added to a solver.

5:00 into the puzzle, and Simon still hasn't spotted the starting point. Pausing the video to say that I'm pretty sure this is why the puzzle was rejected; the variance on solve times is going to be huge. The setter appears to have been showing off something clever, but it's not much of a test of sudoku skill to quickly identify it. I'm a far inferior solver (averaging about 2-3x as long on the average puzzle), but the box immediately jumped out to me as a hand-crafted part of the puzzle and I was sure that would produce a constraint before I even did the addition. I had the first two pairs within seconds.
