Nobody has said it yet, but some people find it easier to think of it as an extension of your elbow, keeping your wrist slightly loose like with a long brush stroke. Looking good so far!
Thank you for this review! I was on the fence about getting one of Tom's oblique pen but now it has moved to the top of my list! Thanks for all the hard work you put into this! Also, congrats on your calligraphy progress!
Brilliant video and one that I will watch again and again. Will look into the art of calligraphy more seriously. Got some reasonably priced dip pens. Dip flow problems experienced and then some. Once settled with regard to semi retirement/life etc. will get into this. There is far more to this than I realised.
@@Doodlebud I have been told they are very comfortable to use and also quick to get used to. I have one 'dip pen' left and it is the Moonman N6 glass dip tip with adapter filler nib to use as a fountain pen.
I (or should I say "we" as it was our class) learned all about calligraphy in school in the early 70's. How to write all the alphabet letters and all the swirls on the capital letters and page margins etc. Learned with pens and angled pain brushes the same as the japanese use.
I think you did marvellously! It takes a long long time to get the hang of it. Practice, as you say, makes practice, or something like that. 🙌. (Might I suggest copying out a book you like. That way you get to know the boom better and you get to practice more).
Oh ho ho! The perfect dip pen for a gadget-guy engineer! Idk, I have very little interest in calligraphy (I'm a leftie, fgs!), but I love my dip pens. I started with ruling pens, which I was vaguely familiar with from drafting, but I got a glass pen as well, and I was hooked! I was hoping to get a Drillog (despite the price), or a Kakimori nib, but I think this goes straight to the top of the list. Thanks for sharing, DB!
Much better than my first go would be! It looks like you weren't using the guide sheet for much of the first attempts and just using it as a reference next to the page. Super brave; I'd imagine that makes it much more difficult.
I think that one of the benefits as you say is that it will help with the way that I use my fountain pens. Often wondered about this oblique style of writing that is where the nib is offset from the stem. I always imagined that it is a much better way to write and it is. Quite thought provoking this and something to undertake when things are a little less frantic for me. I thought that your writing during the video was really good. I thought that the Omas vintage pen you purchased and showed on this video was something like a grail pen for me maybe the perfect pen. Enough to do perfect or near perfect calligraphy with. However I guess that the work produced by a first rate calligraphy pen transcends even this. Thank you again for a really great video. Catch ya next time. D
Flex pens are great, but to haeb proper calligraphy strokes gotta go with a dip pen or at least a dip nib. The oblique makes it much more comfortable as well
You should try putting the lined reference sheet under the page you are writing on. If the paper is thin enough, you can see your lines through it. It will make practicing much easier. From what I see, this looks more like Spencarian script or Copperplate than Calligraphy. Calligraphy is usually done with flat nibs?
The paper I had was too thick to see the lines easy, hence the tracing paper. I "think" calligraphy is more the types of strokes & then there are different styles. This book is modern calligraphy, which is based originally from the various strokes used in copperplate. I believe you can use all sorts of nib styles for calligraphy but the way the stokes are used is the different calligraphy style. At least this is what I've called from talking to Gemma.
wow - I'm going to check out Tom's Studio - thanks for sharing this with everyone. I think this is something I might try with my son to improve both our handwriting.
I do see an improvement in my writing when I'm trying to do a good job. My quick notes look about the same, but especially notice the improvement with my flex pens
Looks like fun! I started with Speedball pens in my early high school years, but got sidetracked for decades. In the past, the nibs weren't called nibs. They're the pens. Holder has been a holder, though. 😁 They became nibs after fountain pens took off. Looks like several high quality pens! Gilliot (sp?) has been around since the 1850s, if I remember correctly. Hope you enjoy this!
LOL, well when I see how some of the lines are supposed to look I realize just how much work I need to do to improve. It's very interesting retraining your hand to do these maneuvers. Its sort of like learning an instrument. You don't just pick up a guitar to lay down Stairway To Heaven 🎸. This takes some serious patience. I'm sure they'll have more kits up at some point. They just moved into their new shop
This was a meme that was circulating that claimed he was a billionaire, this was russian propaganda ...you sir fell for Russian propaganda. Its been confirmed zelensky is worth 20 million from share he owns in a legit company. How did putin become a billionaire???
It's simple! Just take his actual net worth in USD, convert that into Russian Rubles, and PRESTO! Now he's a Billionaire! P.S. You spelled his name wrong too ;)
He's got a new toy! Have fun.

Never mind! You were really killing it towards the end.
I have a zoom call I'm editing that I will post. Gemma did a beginners lesson with me & goes over all these tips etc.
Nicely done!
I like that pen holder - something that I will look into.
Thanks!

They did a calligraphy lesson for beginners if you want to check it out as well. It helped me a bunch!

Those little "one dip wonder" that I fitted on to the bottom are AMAZING! Makes it such much better since you're able to write much longer
Progress looks amazing!
An oblique dip pen. I have never used one, but have used dip pens. I have even turned some pens on my lathe. They can be very nice to write with.
I like how it helps my wrist get into a more comfortable position when writing. Seems to make it a bit easier

I used the guide sheet for some but also tried freehand once I got used to it. Had like 2hrs of video & cut it down to a few min of video.

great suggestions Bruce. Yes you can also put flat blackletter and italic nibs in the pen :)

It definitely makes you focus! I have the zoom lesson coming up, hoping for this weekend
Thanks Benjamin, let me know if you have any questions
Doodle-san, wax on wax off. Enjoy your calligraphy tools and thanks for sharing! You are off to a great start, ten years from now,
who knows?!
I ten years I'm hoping my up-stroke won't be a shaky line! LOL That stroke is so hard to do!
If your first strokes are “terrible,” it makes most of ours horrendous 😂 I always thought your penmanship was superb 👍
Slow & steady improvement 👍
Nice results DB. If you have a Daiso nearby, they sell a homebrand Sumi ink.
Ahh yeah I've seen those before. Thx for the tip
You are doing it well. Would love to see the progress.
I'll do an update in a while. I'm editing the zoom call with Gemma so keep an eye out for it
@@Doodlebud sure will
It takes only 10 000 hours to become a master! Keep going!
9,992 hrs to go!
very true!
Great demo! Thanks for sharing the practice montage. Have you seen a change to your every day writing as well?
I do see an improvement in my writing when I'm trying to do a good job. My quick notes look about the same, but especially notice the improvement with my flex pens
This looks hard!
It ain't easy thats for sure, takes some time

"Terrible"???!!! (NOT!) Once again, Doodlebud inspires!!! And ... Tom's is now sold out on this kit. (!)

yes sorry! They went quick. I'm hoping to get them back in stock ASAP
*Mango Chutney 😸. Nice work, D.B.
Hey, if the other stuff goes south, you could have a good career doing handmade wedding invitations. ;-).
LOL, when you see how well professional calligraphers do those, I'd be subsidizing my new career by picking bottles at night 😆
Looking into starting this. Would you recommend oblique or straight nib holder?
I'd go for the oblique
I had to laugh out loud when you wrote Putin is a Turd. lol. Best quote. Love it. :)
😂
I wrote that for like 30min straight one night practicing, I was very focused to get it just right 😁
@@Doodlebud You done great for first time. Looks like you been doing it a long time. So smooth and no hicups in the ink. Looks perfect.
Beautifully written, that one...' Joe is a turd'..over and over again 👍
Great humor on Putin. Has anyone ever mention that you sound like Dave Rubin?
I usually tell me I remind them of AvE. Haven't even heard of Dave Rubin
@@Doodlebud He's a talking head personality.
Not gonna lie, you sound a lot like AVE with less cursing. I’m sure you get that though.
LOL, yeah I get that comment fairly often. Guess we just sorta think & talk alike. I always take that as a compliment
