I had the Street Fighter Collection for Saturn and Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold was near arcade perfect. I loved that game and the Saturn's control pad was great for 2D fighters. Great vid as always !
Alpha 2 gold on the Saturn was fantastic (also good on the ps1). My one complaint about alpha 2 and gold on the Saturn and it’s literally a stupid complaint but in versus mode it only shows the names of the characters instead of their faces like the arcade mode. Obviously this was done for cut back purposes to make the game run better but my friends and I would just play arcade mode against each other instead of versus because of this reason (except when we wanted to play cammy)
The sad part about Sega Ages is that 25 years later they're STILL rereleasing the same Mega Drive games when ironically all people want are Saturn ports.
I would really enjoy a similar episode focused on the PS1 compilations too, from which there are many. As for the Capcom Collections, the PS1 could display lower resolutions the Saturn wasn't able to, so those games are displayed correctly in Sony's console. A few Konami arcade ports are even better than the originals in the sense they properly ported assets to the Saturn higher resolution, so there's more horizontal real state. I agree that those more vintage games should always be in a single CD and at least 30 titles, much like Konami Antiques MSX Ultra Pack. Yes Sonic World is probably what they achieved for a proper Sonic game on the Saturn but they were certainly planning on abandoning ship for the DC the following year. The Saturn never reached its full potential due to SEGA's own management. There's no denying your points on these compilations are valid, as even to this day, upgrades like Super Mario All-Stars should be the bare minimum requirement to bring older titles to current generation systems. Improving on every area possible.
I always loved compilation on Gen 5 systems mainly because most if not all of them were not emulators running a bunch of ROMs. Not saying that modern compilations don't make any efforts in their content, but you we feel that actually porting games requires more work.

I never understood why Defender 2 was never called Stargate like it was in the arcade. I think the only home version that called it Stargate was on the Atari 2600.
I sorely miss the compilation disc. I understand that digital distribution has rendered the concept obsolete, but there was something about holding a disc packed with classic games in your hands that(to my mind) just can not be beat. SLX always brings us the good stuff.
I am a sucker for compilations. I'm excited for Sonic Origins despite the nonsensical DLC. Would be fun to get some of these Saturn ones...I'd love Sonic Jam. I had no idea Capcom released so many compilations for the Saturn in Japan.
I think Sega Ages wanted to release all of their older arcade games from the beginning. Probably why they numbered them by volume. If it had kept going along with the Saturn, I have no doubt we would have seen the better stuff that came later on. Sort of like what they had on PS2.
Sega should still do these today, they have plenty of titles to make these collections genre specific even. I would especially love a Racer collection. You could also have a fighters collection, action adventure, platformers and shooters. or break them up by decade...so many options.

People who grew up with arcade emulators can not understand how this was actually a big deal to play these games at home in almost perfect form back in the day. In regards to Thunderforce collection if I am not wrong I think they moved the music to be CD audio with only one loop that faded out and restarted at the end making the track feel short.
I'll always go to bat for Midway Arcade's Greatest Hits. It was one of my favorite Saturn games, even in a library heavy with fantastic titles. Sure there were only six games, but they were the right ones. (Well, five of them were. The one that didn't need to be there was Bubbles.) You know what really stings, though? There's no Namco Museum on Saturn. Obviously that wasn't going to happen since Namco had an exclusivity agreement with Sony, but the fact that Pac-Man was never officially released for the Saturn is nevertheless a bitter pill to swallow. Friggin' Pac-Man! It's available on practically everything else! Its ease in handling Genesis games makes me wonder why the Saturn wasn't backward compatible with that system. If they had added a Genesis cartridge slot, it could have made a big difference in the console wars of the late 1990s.
Maybe hopefully Sega releases a Sega Saturn Collection, for modern day consoles with games that never released in the west. The Sega Saturn was released in November 1994, so it´s almost 28 years old. So maybe there will be a Sega Saturn 30th Anniversary Collection. Yes nostalgia hit a little bit hard right now.
They really need to bring back retro gaming collection on the e-stores. Since the 6th and 7th gen era. We have been missing so many classics retro and compilation games especially from the arcade scene. It's the best time to bring them back. Video game subscription is all greed.
Parodius Deluxe Pack contains the first 2 ARCADE titles, the MSX one on that MSX Antiques is the first one in the series. These are the second and third games in the series. Just clearing that up for you. 😉 As for Thunder Force IV, there is a slight upgrade at least with the slowdown removed. But boy oh boy the price on both Gold Packs is not good. I do have Image Fight/X-Multiply, but on the PS1 as I found it for $50 (I didn't pick it up, but a forumer at one forum picked it up a little later for me in a San Antonio retro game store where I first found it, just ran me slightly more due to shipping). No way was I finding either the PS1, nor Saturn version anywhere else for $50. Even at that time Ebay sellers wanted 3 times more for a copy for either one on Ebay. Oddly at one time, the PS1 version was selling for a little more than the Saturn version, but they should be about even on price by now. As for Chase HQ and SCI on the Saturn (picked up the comp years ago for around $20), I find them okay, but have what I consider better versions on the Japanese PS2 Taito Memories packs, as those are emulations of the arcade games. Playing either game with a pad on either console though, is quite the chore due to both using steering wheel controls in the arcade.

The question no really ever asks is the SEGA Saturn a hidden gem of the 32bit generation and are we comparing the console too much against the PS1 and N64 rather then basing the Saturn off its own merits?
The issue is sega killed off the saturn in na and eu nearing the 2nd half of its lifespan due to poor management by sega as a whole. They treated it like the turbografx in NA.
@Marc Carran 32x and 32x cd made matters worst. Due to sega consumers have to spend more money getting 4 or 3 systems. While competitors pay less buying 1 or 2 home hardware. Even the 32x cd is more difficult to program than the saturn since you have hardware to deal with (restrictive Genesis lacking expansion support, limited sega add-on and the 32x doing all the grunt work).

So many compilations I didn't know of! Thanks for the video. Funnily enough, the MSX versions of Gradius, Gradius II, Parodius and Salamander now have patches to enable smooth scrolling in more powerful (MSX 2 and up), hardware. Gradius even has an "arcade" patch with graphics more faithful to the original and voice samples, making them better than the Saturn pack! 😅
Just watched a documentary on Sonic X-treme last night. Everything was so chaotic that trying to create that game that it almost killed two or three people. Sonic Jam seems to be using Christina (can't remember her surname sorry ) "boss engine" that she worked on alone at her home.
I am actually happy that Chase HQ came out on the Saturn since it's the best port I released better than anything I had played before. I played Chase HQ back in the 80's and there were no ports that did it justice. The one I had access to was the Master System version which was okay it played nicely but graphics were a far cry from the Arcade version and the PC Engine version looked good but it didn't play well also I didn't have access to it as PC Engine wasn't released in the UK in normal shops. So I was very happy chase hq was released on the Sega Saturn that aside I only wish it was in English lol. You know that's what I love about the Sega Saturn it does arcade ports really well and it's not emulation so no latency issues With regards to Mega drive ports at the time I didn't appreciate them as I already had a Mega drive and was looking to experience new games utilising the power of the Saturn. However I believe those people that didn't have a Mega Drive in the previous generation probably would have loved these ports and as a retro gamer I actually enjoy these a lot now. They do have some basic enhancements with regards to performance while they look the same you could say they are definitive because they don't have slowdowns that occured on the original Megadrive releases especially in the case of Sonic Jam
I don't hold Technosoft's decision to spread four games over two separate releases against them, or Sega's pairing of those early Mega Drive Disney games either because in all cases the games were immaculately preserved. I'd take that over a long list of games with weird emulation issues and input lag all day long.
Wasn't until PS2 until we got the BIG collections. I mean Atari, Namco, Intellivision, Midway, Taito, Tecmo, SNK, Capcom, Mega Man, Street Fighter, Sega Genesis, Sega Ages, Sonic, all of them were in previous collections, but not as many games. Hands down the best era for retro collections!
It made sense because 80s games provided a completely different experience from what the early 3D polygonal games that had quickly become mainstream in the mid 90s did.
Didn't even know japan got that many compilations. I'm impressed Saturn was always my go to for fighting games I love the controller to this day, I'm sad the 6 button layout died with Saturn.
It should be noted that Thunder Force 4 on the Gold Pack 2 completely eliminates the slowdown from the Genesis original. That alone makes it a must-have, although I do admit that two separate discs was a bit greedy.
Speaking of Wizardry, there is a Saturn compilation called Wizardry Llylgamyn Saga that is an enhanced version of the first 3 original Wizardry titles. The game is in Japanese but if you go to the options (still in Japanese) there is a option to switch that to English. It translates everything outside the name of your characters (which you can rename) and unfortunately the description of what spells do what and descriptions of the enemies, but those can be looked up rather easily online. I've only dipped my toe into the world of Wizardry, so I'm not an expert but these versions and the Japanese only Windows release appear to be more user friendly then most other versions with QOL improvements (although the Super Famicom release is pretty good too), including a dungeon map that can be brought up with a press of one button, although everything is pre-rendered but you can switch to the original Apple II wireframe graphics if you wanted to. There is a another compilation called New Age of Llylgamyn that compiles Wizardry 4 and 5 in the same engine (and same options) but the Saturn didn't get that, likely because in 1999, the Saturn was pretty much on it's way out in Japan. That one has an additional arranged mode for Wizardry 4 that you can actually control the monsters, however, most of that version is in Japanese only. Good luck for those who play Wizardry 4, it's regarded as one of the hardest cRPGs ever devised.
The Saturn was so much more in Japan than what it was here in the USA. What id really love is a few of the Saturn RPGs that never made it here to get translated and brought out as a completion today. Imagine a shinning force 3 official release, maybe even a cool special edition. Well I can dream.
At least unofficially people are tackling and translation products I forgot what the game was recently but there was a recent RPG that was released in English patch as well. Now if Sega would just apply their rights that and release those... Lol Sadly I think they're into that weird super game concept as much as I love crazy taxi and jetset radio and I'm sad that those are going to be games as a service.. :(
Nicely done, as usual. I imagine that at the time of release, these compilations were a cool way to play games you may have never gotten to experience, but with many better, cheaper compilations available on modern machines, there’s just not a lot of reason to get most of these on Saturn today barring things like Sonic Jam or Parodius. The former’s 3D World, in particular, was an interesting inclusion, although I personally doubt the Saturn ever needed to have any 3D Sonic game for both the game and system to take off. It ultimately does make Jam unique, however
Man, parodius and fantastic journey were my go-to stress relief games on the Saturn for forever. I still suck at both, but I always get a laugh and get a bit further. I’ve been trying to get better at dodanpachi recently, but I’m just bad at schmups:)
You know Sega lord, learning to read Japanese isn't that difficult. Especially for someone with so much material in that language. Often the dialogue in games of that era isn't complicated enough to warrant a diploma. Idioms and references specific to that language will go over your head but you'll get the gist of it.
Man, there were A LOT of collection games on the Saturn! Personally, I enjoy Sonic Jam....don't ask how, but I ended up with two Japanese copies in perfect condition...😅
Great video. U got to remember that by the point that Street Fighter Collection hit the shelves, there wasn't a home port of Super Sf2 Turbo besides on the more obscure 3do, so that was the first time that we could experience SF2 eith super combos! What really bothers me about Capcom Generations 5 is that there was no reason to sell that collection with plain Sf2s if u already had the superiors that were released in a prior collection... Maybe if they had added SF1 (and maybe Final Fight) it would have been better, bc by that point, emulation wasn't a really a thing and most ppl were curious about the first entry, even though it plays really rough.
I was disappointed the remaining 'capcom generations' games didn't see release here. at least not until capcom rectified that in the PS2 era with the 'capcom classics collection' porting all those versions to the PS2. I did randomly check out an ISO (albeit of the PSX port) of ninja hayate I actually enjoyed that one a lot! I know a lot of these can be found elsewhere these days but I imagine there's something special about playing them on a system like the saturn.
The Mega Drive had loads of compilations in Europe. Sonic Compilation, Classics Collection, the EA double header, muliple Code Masters compilations, Disney Compilation, Midway Presents Arcade Compilation, Mega Games 1,2,3, Mega Games 6 vol. 1,2,3. Maybe more. For the Saturn I think the D&D collection is best.
Anymore is a bit of a stretch. Sure Konami is basically out of the race so I don't even count them anymore. Anytime Capcom finally decides to get off their stubborn ass and make something, they have produced tons of quality titles in the past couple of years.
Missing the 'Bubble Bobble also featuring Rainbow Islands' collection, which features probably one of the most horrifying intro sequences on any Saturn/PSX game ever. :') Amazing video! Can't imagine how long this one took to put together. The MSX compilation really was an absolute gem.
I had a really cool demo disc that had like Nights into Dreams and Clockwork Knight 2 and World Series Baseball 2 and some other gems along with the three games that were packed with it (Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Cop and Daytona USA) I bought Madden 97 and that's all I ever owned.
I'm continually surprised about rereleasing old titles that are broken and not fixing the issues, as outlined here about the MSX collection. Why would anyone choose to play Space Harrier II on the Switch if they didn't make that thing a blazing 60 FPS stallion to slay the original MD version?
I love Y's. Played all up from I and II on PCE Duo CD to 9 Collectors Box I got for PS4. All 3 on PSP are great iterations, as well as Y's Origins. I had to make an EPROM SNES cart for Ys V Kefin w the fan translated patch, there was a PS2 "remake" of that but no English or any other release to this day for poor V. Japan got so many amazing Saturn games! Luckily Linkle Liver Story was translated too, another good classic RPG w GREAT colors and visuals imo that no one but die hards heard of.

Wow ! I never knew this version of Y's existed ! How impressive ! Super Columns on the Game Gear is a beast of its own if you ask me.
My dude! You missed out the Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands compilation. I loved both of those games.
I loved Sonic Jam and the port of Sonic 1 on this disc is still the best version of the game.
That spin dash does make a bug difference.
@Marc Carran not the original on genesis
Every time I fear that my love for Sega might keep me from being unbiased, I reflect on how much I absolutely HATE Columns.
Just watched a documentary on Sonic X-treme last night. Everything was so chaotic that trying to create that game that it almost killed two or three people. Sonic Jam seems to be using Christina (can't remember her surname sorry ) "boss engine" that she worked on alone at her home.
Sega made a big mistake developing it on genesis and 32x. The should've been exclusively for the sega saturn.
You know that's what I love about the Sega Saturn it does arcade ports really well and it's not emulation so no latency issues
With regards to Mega drive ports at the time I didn't appreciate them as I already had a Mega drive and was looking to experience new games utilising the power of the Saturn.
I do like 1943 Kai. Way better than 1942 for sure!
Speaking of Sonic Jam, definitely hold onto your copies. Sonic Origins look cool, but it may fuck with the music from Sonic 3 and Knuckles.
They could always have the music as dlc and charge for it.
all these discs could've fit way more games on them too
Wasn't until PS2 until we got the BIG collections.
I love the fact that in the mid-late 90's people called 10 year old games "classics"
It made sense because 80s games provided a completely different experience from what the early 3D polygonal games that had quickly become mainstream in the mid 90s did.
Comparing the Original Legend of Zelda to Link to the Past what other word would use other than "dated?"
Konami msx collection sadly missing the metal gear games and castlevania
And Snatcher games
Playstation got the Metal Gear one though.
Maze of Galious, Treasure of Usas, Goemon, Contra, Space Manbow
Sonic Jam is my favourite. Especially on toast.
The Saturn was so much more in Japan than what it was here in the USA. What id really love is a few of the Saturn RPGs that never made it here to get translated and brought out as a completion today. Imagine a shinning force 3 official release, maybe even a cool special edition. Well I can dream.
It had the same fate as turbografx in the states. Potentially could've a solid run in NA/EU market had sega promote it the same way as the genesis.
At least unofficially people are tackling and translation products I forgot what the game was recently but there was a recent RPG that was released in English patch as well.
Now if Sega would just apply their rights that and release those... Lol
Sadly I think they're into that weird super game concept as much as I love crazy taxi and jetset radio and I'm sad that those are going to be games as a service.. :(
Nicely done, as usual. It ultimately does make Jam unique, however
Excelente Bro 👍
Thanks you.
Gotta admit that I'm curious about how that exchange between you and Shin Akuma ended. He had the upper hand in the round count. Spill the tea!
I lost that one.
Man, parodius and fantastic journey were my go-to stress relief games on the Saturn for forever. I still suck at both, but I always get a laugh and get a bit further. I’ve been trying to get better at dodanpachi recently, but I’m just bad at schmups:)
Great vídeo as usual.I have most of them and I want some of them and thank you for reviewing them.☺️👍
No problem.
I wish sonic would've added cancelled stages from sonic 2 (Sand Shower Zone, Wood, Hidden Palace, and Genocide City).
These are some pretty neat collections.
I may be the only person on the planet that prefers the Japanese ost for road blaster
The Sega CD soundtrack was the entire reason to play it for me.
@@SegaLordX like I said only person on the planet lol thanks for the reply huge fan of the channel
Love the sega ages volume set
Excellent video, thank you!!!
Thanks for watching it.
Playing some SS games, seems like playing in arcade, like Parodius and Salamander!
I would’ve love to see a Namco Museum collection along with the first two Final Fantasy games on this console.
Saudações do Brazil
I love the Dungeons & Dragons Collection but it didn’t have the name select bug that the arcade has.
Always comes back to Saturn!
I was going to say that. I remember compilations being quite common on the Mega Drive.
Yup, all of which came much later in the life of the console and where made of smaller titles(like I said in the video).
I like old Konami and capcom stuff ... loved those brands ...
They're not the same anymore ...
Anymore is a bit of a stretch. Sure Konami is basically out of the race so I don't even count them anymore. Anytime Capcom finally decides to get off their stubborn ass and make something, they have produced tons of quality titles in the past couple of years.
Capcom are still good. Konami have done some good stuff with there retro compilations but there new stuff is generally awful.
I have street fighter collection myself and love it! I just wish powerdrift was ported
The vf2 vc daytona or sega rally 3 pak was best
Missing the 'Bubble Bobble also featuring Rainbow Islands' collection, which features probably one of the most horrifying intro sequences on any Saturn/PSX game ever. :')
Amazing video! Can't imagine how long this one took to put together. The MSX compilation really was an absolute gem.
I had a really cool demo disc that had like Nights into Dreams and Clockwork Knight 2 and World Series Baseball 2 and some other gems
along with the three games that were packed with it (Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Cop and Daytona USA) I bought Madden 97 and that's all I ever owned.
I'm continually surprised about rereleasing old titles that are broken and not fixing the issues, as outlined here about the MSX collection. Why would anyone choose to play Space Harrier II on the Switch if they didn't make that thing a blazing 60 FPS stallion to slay the original MD version?
I am a simple man: I see Sega Saturn, I click
Nice work on the video
There's also Langrisser Tribute as well!
Great video Sega Lord. One question what emulator do you recommend me for Sega Saturn ? (Easy to install)
Thanks Lordy! SEEEEEEEEGAAAAAAAAAAA!
