Nice video. I upgraded mine with a 32GB Kingston SSD(bought from ebay), and it works as great as the 16GB. For larger storage and stability, I recommend 32GB Kingston and mini USB flash driver like Samsung.
do you mind linking an ssd that you recommend? I'm wanting to just have at least 50gb for the hardrive in the laptop and then install ubuntu rather than using chrome os. Thanks for the help.
FYI Google added boot from USB to Chromebooks, so you could boot a Linux distro off a USB drive if that was more your speed. Some of the tiny stay-in ones are pretty fast and small now.
This Chrome-book is pretty tough. My wife spilt Chardonnay on hers and it immediately went black. All I did was dry it really well and off it went! Working fine.
I wonder if this can be performed on a Samsung Chrome Book 11 inch with 2 GB of ram? I think it is an Eyxnos model or something. I only have a 16 GB SSD and want to upgrade to a 20 GB SSD or higher.
The new version of this is even better imo, aluminum build, ips touch screen, backlit keyboard, pentium processor, 12 hour battery. Just got mine today for $314.99 no tax on amazon. and one of the coolest features is TWO usb C ports on either side and both charge the laptop!
my model cb3 351c4a5 appears to have two wires soldered onto the hard drive card. have no idea what those wires are for but i put the back on and aborted until i could ask.
Would you be able specify the physical size (or the part number) of the Transcend SSD that you installed? As I understand it, the M.2-type SSD is made in more than one physical size. Thank you.
This ACER model, as with all Chrome devices (-books and -boxes) use 42mm m.2 SSDs. When upgrading to an ADATA brand 128 GB SSD, the ACER-supplied screw will be too large in diameter. A smaller diameter screw will be required. Apparently, TRANSCEND and KINGSTON SSD modules do not have this issue. 256 GB m.2 SSDs might be available, but at a premium price. Reminder: RAM and WiFi modules are soldered on this ACER product, only the SSD module is upgradable.
I can confirm that after having serious problems, like freezing, restarting, which made the machine unusable. I found an original Kingston RBU-SNS4151S3/32GD and my machine is 100% back to normal. For me at least the trascend drive gave me catastrophic results.
Should you upgrade to a 256 GB SSD (Transcend is recommended), you will see that the Downloads folder has about 217 GB free. As an aside, the Adata 128 GB SSD which I had previously installed failed (that is, the machine hung during startup, generally at about the same point) after "only a few days", more or less. Most likely, this was due to infant mortality as this Adata SSD was purchased brand-new from NewEgg. Incidentally, a Transcend 256 GB (or 128 GB) SSD WILL NOT require a special screw, whereas an Adata 128 GB SSD, and most likely 256 GB as well, WILL require a special screw.
I replaced mine with the Transcend 64GB. Seems work, for a short while. Then it starts crashing. Finally it went into the "OS damaged error screen". This SSD is crap.
Thank you so much for this video. I need more room on my internal storage, and this is the ticket. I love my Acer Chromebook 15 CB5-571, just wish I could also upgrade the RAM.
Alas, this model, as with most models, is "printed" for two banks of PC3L-12800 RAM, and on 2 GB models, two chips are soldered on one side, and two chips are soldered on the other side; and on 4 GB models, 4 chips are soldered on one side, and four chips are soldered on the other side. So, no upgrading of the RAM is possible. Additionally, the WiFi module on this model is also soldered.
Should you attempt to upgrade to an ADATA brand 128GB SSD, be aware that the very large diameter head of the ACER-supplied SSD retaining screw will INTERFERE with the ADATA SSD module. A replacement retaining screw with a smaller head IS REQUIRED. Also, be sure to count the number of cover retaining screws ... there are EIGHTEEN of these, all the same in length, and all of these have that blue anti-vibration adhesive. When reinstalling these screws, some will be more difficult to install than others. This is a consequence of the anti-vibration adhesive, and tighter tolerances of some threaded inserts. When reassembling the Chromebook, as after an SSD upgrade, the speakers may become displaced, and will need to be returned to their intended locations. The speakers are held in by locating pins molded into the top cover, not by fasteners. The WiFi card in my Acer CB5-571-C4G4 is an Intel 72605, and is soldered to the motherboard of my machine as is, of course, the RAM. Incidentally, the gigabit Ethernet dongles which are based upon the Realtek chipset work well in Chromebooks, either the USB 3.0 or the USB 2.0 ports. However, with Chrome, the dongles take several seconds to be announced to the system, but these will eventually be discovered. Also, the Realtek dongles support 9 kiB "jumbo" frames, whereas some competitive dongles only support 2 kiB "jumbo" frames. Now, how to determine if your 128GB is being seen ... Select the Downloads folder, open it and then display its information. For a 128GB SSD upgrade, you should see about 105GB free, more or less.
Thank you for making this video. Really helpful. I know Internal Drive is always the best thing to have but would you think a high speed USB 3.0 Flash drive would be fine solution to extend more storage? Also I would love to see your views and insights on YourKarma Wifi device.... and is it worth getting the fifty bucks monthly unlimited data plan?
I replaced with a transcend 64gb andits been nothing but problems, it crashes every 3 minutes, it works better when it's connected but still not reliable. ended up returning ssd.
I swaped for a 128GB Transcend SSD, it works, but every know and then laptop freezes. Don't know whether this is due to the SSD or general instability of ChromeOS.
+Peter Ibach it's the ssd, never had problems before, from what I read this ssd s are not power/manager chrome os compatible, there's supposed to be a way to turn off power management for the drive but it involves putting the machine in developer mode.
+fbaldus mine runs fine several days. Then freezes. Not a big deal as rebbot is just a matter of few seconds. i think in my case it is something with flash and memory as it only occures when running multiple videos simultaneously. So I am happy with my SSD, it is relatively stable. No so sure about SATA power management problems. Are there any testing tools for it?
This is pretty awesome. i think i will be looking into doing this, and maybe even partitioning to dual boot windows/chromeOS. I am shure this voids the warranty, yes?
The Acer Chromebook 15 CB3-531-C4A5 does NOT come with a removable ssd, they solder the ssd onto the motherboard so most people cant mess with it. No clue what model he has. Im a 30 year pc tech.
What model are you working with? I was excited when I found ur vid since the hard drive in my Acer Chromebook 15 needs replaced, but yours is a bit different inside... Yours has a fan and mine doesn't, for instance, and where you removed the SSD from in yours, mine has an Intel dual band WiFi chip in the same spot... Mine's an Acer Chromebook 15 CB3-532 series Model N15Q9...

Great video. You know what I wish Acer would of done? I wish they used all that empty space for battery. I mean look at that! All that space is wasted. I still think with that big flaw its still a fantastic computer. I just got mine today and wow! I love this huge ass full IPS HD screen, the 4GB ram is pleantly for chrome os, the 16GB SSD is upgradeable and they speakers are killer. Acer really has outdone themselves with this product. I think if they were to keep everything the same but use the all that empty space with battery that would make this laptop perfect. So how has that SSD been working for you? I see some of the comments below saying that upgrading the SSD gave them some problems.
Anthony Evich Mine is still working till this day, I love it and I think anybody whos looking for a basic solid all around computer should look at this one. Also thats awesome! I got mine for like $260.00 but it was new so Im fine with that(: Hows the refurb working for you? I never owned a refurbed laptop before
Anthony Evich Wow thats awesome! Glad to hear its still working great for you(: I will have to look at the refurbs next time because I am a fan of saving money haha. Also how would you only have Linux installed on it? Iv seen some videos on how to do that but Linux is running while chrome os is running and I just dont like the thought of having two operating systems running at the same time on low end hardware
i bought one of these while they were on sale @ Walmart. think $179 plus tax. i'd heard how GREAT chrome-books were & thought hey, this'd be Great for school. yeah got it home tinkered with it for 5 hrs and LOATHED the OS! if you can call it that. thing is, chrome? just hobbled this AWESOME hardware!! so, i started looking. i mean i had to do something. use something i hate, or make it something i love. so..i found Gallium OS. i tell y'all the crew that made this OS were SPOT on!! i had to get something lightweight..this acer G-BOOK is a DREAM to carry to classes! so, i went through the work, screwed the warranty 12 ways from Sunday and WOW!! this baby SOARS!! Gallium SAVED IT!!!! so no, i no longer have a chrome-book
Anthony that's GREAT!! i really like linux mint. my HP i'm on now was a refurb POS but..w/ LM? it's doing WAY better than win8 or 10 EVER thought of doing. i was one of the sheeple that did the free upgrade to windows10 and lived to regret it. thats whats so great about linux! you can have the crappiest pc from 20 yrs ago an that sucker will work !! i have an old acer netbook i have pepermint linux on it and it's ZIPPY!! you know i did the john lewis version first but for some reasons a few things didn't work 1 being the sound. then i found out that i needed the baytrail version of Gallium, and had to fiddle w/ a different thing than john Lewis had done.. yes i forget what the specific thing is. i hate getting old!! *LOL* meh,..you know what i'm talking about. :D a gent that goes by Mr.Chromebox had the baytrail version i needed on his website. it is FLAWLESS. simply FLAWLESS. yep. they Smart people. i also thought only 2 gb memory would suck canal water. nope. runs movies JUST FINE, does everything i need it to do n then some. i am extremely pleased with how she turned out. :D i sit out at the campus in my van doing classwork while my sons in his classes. wifi works fantastic..speedy..and the options to customize the looks of it are amazing! yep..i'm EXTREMELY happy with my G-Book!! if i can bump up the ssd i'd be estatic! else? i've got a short microsd card adapter coming from ebay and i've got a 64gb micro sd card..so..it'll be good either way. but if i can afford a 128gb SSD? I'm gonna go for it! :D i'm one of those folks that know jsut enough to screw things up...i learn way more when i screw things up than when they work right the first time. :D and thats the fun part! Cheers ! & ALL!
i've never managed to brick any of my devices, Thank the Gods!. i'm in college to, it's keeping me on my toes! everything i've learned about fixing PC's came from my friends. they'd hand me inoperable computers and i'd research em, get the parts an fix em for my kids & myself. your gonna love this , my 1st pc? was an apple IIC. loved that darn thing. still have it and it still works. :D hard to think that NASA sent a man to the moon with less hd power than we have in any 1 smartphone now. that just blows my mind. least ways i read that somewhere and time wise? i'd bet it's accurate.
Thanks for a very helpful and rather encouraging video. I wondered if the Chromebook 15 could be upgraded. Your video answered that question. I take it that the SSD is a M.2 SATA 42mm SSD. could you confirm that please.
42mm m.2 SSDs on all models. Standard is either 16 GB (most) or 32 GB (a few). Upgrading to 128 GB is relatively easy. Upgrading to 256 MB may be possible, but 128 GB should be fine for a combo Chrome/Linux machine.
256 GB is available from ADATA, but it has the same issue with the retaining screw as does the ADATA 128 GB M.2 SSD. At this time, I feel 128 GB is sufficient for a Chrome/Ubuntu machine, using crouton so that one can cycle back and forth between the two OSes.
I purchased a this product 3 days ago for my 5th grader to do their online school homework. The one I bought was $ 180 plus tax at Walmart and had 2 gb of ram and 16 gb of M.2 SSD. So far the kid likes it, and I feel the purchase was the right one. I have not yet used it accept for setting it up for the kid, and so I have mixed impression. I know nothing about Chrome OS, but have used Google products for several years. I do not like the electric connection as I feel it is cheezy and my kid will end up breaking it. I still do not know what all you can do on a Chromebook, other than surf the web, and play a few limited games. FreeCell works better than on my Windows version in an 8.0 box. So that gives me hope that we will find other stuff I like.
+David Locklear I got mine at Walmart as well. Same model. I got the "graphite" version. Real nice looking. I got mine for my dad to use since all he ever uses is Facebook, email, and RUclips on occasion. An iMac would be overkill for that I think since that was his previous computer and it broke. Power supply went out on it and I still have to get the HDD out of it to get at the contacts he had. Yeah, the power brick is pretty chintzy/tiny. But as long as it's not mobile I'm fine with it as the laptop has a 12 hour battery. Pretty much the strength of Chrome OS is the browser as most things are done through the browser these days. You can have Microsoft Office online through the Live.com site or Google Docs. You can watch movies and listen to music through Google's services or even through other services like Amazon Music online. But the big downside for a kid on the go is that with the Chromebook you have to be online for most things which means you have to find an access point if you want to do something like listen to music (that or have a USB hard drive that already has his music on it). There are a few offline things that you can run, but most of it is online. Plus if his school requires Windows of OS X for any software they want him to use there might be a problem there, but honestly with online versions of things like Office and online testing there really is no real problem being compatible. You just gotta know where to look for functional alternatives to the software you get on DVD. The upside is that he won't get distracted by gaming when he's supposed to do his school work as ChromeOS has a very light selection of games. No Call of Duty on this computer. ;)
I was able to replace my Acer Chromebook CB5-571 laptop 32 GB SSD with a 512 GB (Transcend) SSD. I then installed Lubuntu linux as my operating system.
I don't know why they still using 16gb now days its to little space, Acer is good band I have pc is acer I never had Chromebook yet. I saw one on sell for $179.99 on the Source
The required driver is a Philips 1, often called a PH1.
The most common Philips screw is a PH2. The largest is a PH3, mainly used on automobiles and on external door hardware.
Much smaller Philips drivers are also available, such as PH0, PH00 and PH000.
PH0 is commonly used to install mSATA devices. Also many WiFi cards.

did it work?
Is there an enclosure that I can buy to put the old ssd in so that it can be used externally?
Do you know if this same holds true for the Acer CB3-351-C4A5 model? I would love to expand to a 128GB SSD
Hi. Just found this, My Chromebook 15 CB3-532 does not have a removable SSD. What is your model? Thanks!
Can we add more RAM memmory on a chromebook? i did not see the slot
Great video! Thanks for taking the time to do it.
The new version of this is even better imo, aluminum build, ips touch screen, backlit keyboard, pentium processor, 12 hour battery. Just got mine today for $314.99 no tax on amazon. and one of the coolest features is TWO usb C ports on either side and both charge the laptop!
Did you ues a 2.5 inch ssd?
Mine has 2 wires plugged into the SSD board.Wonder what they are for and if the new SSD would have pins for those wires.
Sounds like a wifi board
Jon Jensen No that's the WiFi card! Those wires are antennas!
"I take great comfort in it saying that." I can totally understand that feeling. :)
im looking to expand my ssd for my chromebook same model as the video ,, how and where do i know how to buy the right ssd card ?
Sorry what type of SSD model is this exactly? I'm worried I may pick the wrong model online.
my model cb3 351c4a5 appears to have two wires soldered onto the hard drive card. have no idea what those wires are for but i put the back on and aborted until i could ask.
That's the wireless card, your ssd will not have those. It is a similar slot though, but not the same.
does the usb used for the recovery have to be chrome os or could it be something like say x86 android or bliss os for example?
where can u download the chrome ios ?
will the CB3-431 replacement power port fit the CB3-531-C4A5? thanks very much for your time.
Which SSD type is it? I can't figure out the form factor and protocol used by the Acer CB3-532-C47C Chromebook that i am planning to buy and upgrade
How did it go? I have the same model and would like to know
dido. Any feed back would be good.
Its a M.2 SSD probably with an SATA protocol.
Where can I buy a ssd compatible for this chrome I got the Acer cb5-571-c4g4. Thanks
what's the dimension of the ssd? i have thesame chromebook only its 14".
Still informative video! 🎉
How do you replace the mic you are using?
This dosent work with newer Chromebook’s as it’s soldered
I can confirm that after having serious problems, like freezing, restarting, which made the machine unusable. I found an original Kingston RBU-SNS4151S3/32GD and my machine is 100% back to normal. For me at least the trascend drive gave me catastrophic results.
great video! would you know if the internals are the same to do on the Acer 13?
Do you think I could upgrade ram? I bought the 2gb version.
Not really. Its soldered to mainboard.
Ok thanks for letting me know :)
My pleasure.
yo thank you super helpful always thought it'd be better to just upgrade tech internally
Should you upgrade to a 256 GB SSD (Transcend is recommended), you will see that the Downloads folder has about 217 GB free.

I replaced mine with the Transcend 64GB. Seems work, for a short while. Then it starts crashing. Finally it went into the "OS damaged error screen". This SSD is crap.
does the usb have to be empty?
what is the brand and type of ssd?
awesome... this next on my to do list.. did you have the link to the ssd you used, its a card like ssd i think
Thanks a allot for the video, very helpful :) Could you tell which kind of SSD is needed for this?
unplug the battery power before replacement should be more safe
You can replace wifi card to ssd
In my Chromebook this port is connected with wifi card
Love the video. What brand should I look for when I buy a SSD?
Should you attempt to upgrade to an ADATA brand 128GB SSD, be aware that the very large diameter head of the ACER-supplied SSD retaining screw will INTERFERE with the ADATA SSD module. A replacement retaining screw with a smaller head IS REQUIRED.

For a 128GB SSD upgrade, you should see about 105GB free, more or less.
does the fan turn on much at all ?
bro can you help me find the write protect screw in acer chromebook 15?
Asad Ahmad ik this is a little late but i have a chromebook 13 and the screw was located under the heat sync
Thank you for making this video. Really helpful.

Todd Perry that wasn't an ssd...I think that was the wifi card....
The chromebook in the video is a CB5-571
128gb is huge for a Chromebook. Lots of space
It's also great if you want to switch to Windows or Linux "since Google is starting to make some Chrome Books obsolete"
Not if you are using as an emulator and media center!
BTW you don't need a recovery USB you can just type ctrl d 5 time's
Can I run php files locally on this?

I'm currently using the same model
what if you dont have a fan like me
ram upgrade?
Just install linux on your ssd before you slip it into your chromebook to see if it will boot into linux?

hard to think that NASA sent a man to the moon with less hd power than we have in any 1 smartphone now. that just blows my mind. least ways i read that somewhere and time wise? i'd bet it's accurate.
Thanks for a very helpful and rather encouraging video. I wondered if the Chromebook 15 could be upgraded. Your video answered that question. I take it that the SSD is a M.2 SATA 42mm SSD. could you confirm that please.
+Wire Rubbish Bin (MoreCoffee) The only other choice is a 2280, which is nearly twice as long. Get a 2242 size.
Nice video, thanks!
Does anyone know if you can upgrade the SSD HD on the CB3-532?
¿It's M.2 or mSATA?
m2, 2242 (42 mm variant)
Thank You :)
