    If you learn that in Irish, 'mh' and 'bh' are pronounced like 'v', and when 's' is followed by 'e' or 'i' it turns into a 'sh' sound... then you'll do fine on most Irish names!😉

      Exactly. Once you know the general rules of the language its easy enough to decipher with a bit of common sense.

    I know how her name is correctly pronounced because I have been hearing film critics say her name ever since ATONEMENT in 2007. The trick is to remember how to SPELL her name correctly. So I just made up how her name would sound if the Irish spelling were pronounced as an English word: Say Oh Ersy : SA O IR SE.🙂

    Why is it that so many people from North America and England seem to forget that Ireland, Scotland and Wales have their own languages with letters that are pronounced differently to their English counterparts and as a result think that it’s perfectly acceptable to say that they have weird words and names (in ways that vary in politeness). You don’t think it’s quite so weird when you have trouble with the pronunciation of Spanish, Italian, French or Nordic words and names. So why/Labour under the misconception that Irish, Welsh, Gaelic or Scots are just accents, they’re not they’re languages and not the butt of the joke…unless you’re laughing at your own attempts that miss the mark.

    • @AdrianColley
      @AdrianColley Месяц назад +1

      That's a good question. The answer is that the names were spoken by Celts and written down by Christian missionaries whose main language was Latin. The scribes did the best they could to capture the unfamiliar vowels as sequences of Latin vowels. So the diphthong "we" was spelled "aoi" (why not "ui"? I have no idea), and the sound "v" was made as "mh" (m séimhiú, for pedants). It was a huge mess.

      Stephen isn't being rude. It is a late night show, nothing serious. Stephen Colbert is Irish. Late night shows aren't meant to be very serious. Saoirse has been mistakenly pronounced it is just a fun little skit. It helps people learn how to say her name correctly. Every culture/accent/language is interesting. Saoirse has never found it offensive.
