Two of the South Sydney old firm in the Eastern Suburbs line-up, Elwyn Walters and Ron Coote. South Sydney actually made the semis that year, in a mad scramble for the minor positions by the three points of the compass besides Easts, that being Norths, Souths, and Wests. Got eliminated by Wests, 4th versus 5th.

This was the game I watched with my gran dad when I was 7. I asked him who the team with the rabbit were, he said "that's the mighty south Sydney Rabbitohs", they became my team right then. 40 years was a long time to wait to see them mighty again.
    Souths till I die.

Thats funny. A few months before I became a life long West fan in pretty similar circumstances. We played each other in the semis that year. Storm came through at halftime that was so bad Rex Mossop could not identify the players on the field lol

me too but not a good memory being a Souths fan, got to say that 74/75 Easts team was the best club team I ever saw

Me too. Not a good day, though not unexpected. But Souths came within an ace of beating them at Redfern Oval in 75. Souths led 4 - 2 for much of the game after Simms booted two field goals, and it looked as if they might hang on, but sadly Easts scored just before full-time, winning 7 - 4. That ruined my weekend.

I remember 1973 at Redfern against Easts. We lead 14 - 12 with about 5 mins remaining. Easts scored and they converted to lead 17 - 14. That looked to be game over. We got possession though in the last few and worked it down their end and got a penalty. Grant took the tap and we somehow scored with about a minute to go. As Simms converted, the siren went. 19 - 17. I will never forget that moment. I was jumping up and down in our loungeroom at Greenacre. The second half was televised live.

It's arguable that the undefeated 1959 St George side was the best team. You're quite right though, the 74/75 Easts side was bloody good.

Yes, I recall that. There was a similar Souths-Easts game at Redfern in 1976 which was a real battle royal, the lead changing hands several times. Finally Easts led 15 - 13 when, in the dying seconds, the winger Bernie Lowther (I think) pounced on a loose ball about 40 yards out and ran away to score in the corner. Souths won 16 - 15. The best game of the season.

It was always very intimidating walking to the ground from Redfern station, but once there. Redfern Oval was a great place to watch a game.
