    I have Hornby Flying Scotsman, and she's analogue-controlled. My Mum bought her for me as a Birthday Present, from Llangollen Station Shop. I tested her afterwards, on the then un-named Cat Valley Steam Railway, and she ran like a dream straight out of the box. If I had a favourite LNER engine, Mallard the A4 would come first and Scottie the A3 would come second. She hasn't given me any trouble throughout the time I've owned her. I wouldn't swap her for any other model A3. Don't make any changes to your model, she's beautiful the way she is. I love her for what she is on the inside: a Really Useful Engine.

    Flying Scotsman started his life as an A1. He ran non stop from London to Edinburgh and set the official 100mph record as an A1. He was given an A3 transformation in about 1947. I hope this helps.

    Hello Matt, Nice video! I also wondered what the difference was between an A1 - A3 and a search reveals that the Flying Scotsman as we know it today is a A3 but was modified from the original A1. I found some notes that explains this. Some A3s were built as A3s. The striking elements are the chimney which as A3 is a double and in A1 is a single. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LNER_Gresley_Classes_A1_and_A3

    The Flying Scotsman was built as an A1 and was converted to an A3 in about 1943 or 1944. It only got it double chimney in the late 1950's when in BR ownership . The Hornby Model of the FlyingScotsman is when she was still an A1.

    The Flying Scotsman locomotives were designed by Sir Nigel Gresley. He first designed the A1 product which the Hornby model that you purchased there is based on. They were kept in service for a very short time. They were built for passenger express. The A1 locomotives were renumbered and named A1 1472 - A1 4472 Flying Scotsman. Two months after a display of Pacifics to see which one was best which the A1 took part in, Sir Gresley went back to modify all his Pacifics. They were converted into a much bigger, much more improved and powerful "double chimney" version which was very successful and remained in service. Some of them survived from scrap and is now still in service for tourism. Those were the A3's. You can buy the models of them but they don't come with a TTS chip.

    Flying Scotsman was built as a Gresley A1 in 1923 just after the grouping of 1923 and originally ran with the number 1472 but had no name. It was modified to be an A3 in 1945 or 1946 after a brief time as an A10 (merely reclassified and not yet modified to be an A3). It was reclassified by Thompson to make way for his A1 class 4-6-2 then Flying Scotsman and the other A1/A10 pacific class engines (minus 1470/4470 Great Northern) were modified to be A3 class engines. The Hornby Railroad Range model of Flying Scotsman depicts the engine as it was as an A1 from 1927 when it gained it's corridor tender to 1937 when it was given a non-Corridor tender.

      matt slade I live in the USA but I have been into trains since I was just a little kid and I like to do research on trains from England and America and one locomotive I have liked to look into the history of in the past is Flying Scotsman. I have many books on trains and quite a few of them have sections on the LNER Gresley A1/A3 class Pacifics. Another way of seeing that is a Gresley A1 and not an A3 is the dome. When an A1, Flying Scotsman had a round dome like on your model of the engine. When modified to be an A3, it was given it's more well known "Banjo" dome.

    Flying Scotsman's current form is an A3, so you are partially right. But the A3 Flying Scotsman usually has the Banjo Dome. That one doesn't. Therefore as a lot of people know, Flying Scotsman's original form from 1923-1930's was an A1, which is the form both you and I have.

    Hi again Matt,
    I had the same problems with a judder when starting off with my Cock O North TTS. I also had problems, which from listening to the chuff sound your Flying Scotsman is giving out, which sound more like a continues hiss and not chuff’s, especially in reverse.
    When I rang Hornby they told me there are issues with the TTS sound decoder, it requirea 124/128 Steps to be set. When I change the Step Setting on my controller for the TTS chip to 124/128, can’t remember which, it worked fine.

    • @Mattslade6024

      Simon Young ow right i will try that see if it works

    • @tedleese1556
      @tedleese1556 9 лет назад

      Simon Young Thank's for the info, Did changing the steps to 128 solve the juddering issue or just the sound issue.
      I have the same juddering problem on my new Railroad Flying Scotsman.
      I am in two minds whether to send it back,the juddering is quite bad,but that is the only negative issue on this loco Maybe a replacement might be better, Excellent value for money tho. TED

    • @SimonLivertonCentral
      @SimonLivertonCentral 9 лет назад

      It only resolved the sound problem, but I have returned two TTS Steam engines because of juddering. Hornby told me the motors were faulty and replaced both of them, I got them back last week. One was Gadwell and the other was C O North.
      I would return it if I were you

    • @Mattslade6024

      @SimonLivertonCentral 9 лет назад

      They run fine now, but I ttook them 2 moths, but that was because they were moving promises and had a lot
      to move.
      I would ring them, tell them your problem and ask how long it will take to fix, I am sure it would not take them long, and they may suggest something to try.
      Let me know how you get on

    Well, railroads are an American type of railway from where I come from. I call a railroad a railway myself as it was the term I have fun using, even if the railway in America is a railroad. Another thing, as an American citizen myself, I always liked UK class steam trains because they always look a lot more different than most of the steam engines the US has. By saying that, their not awful. I just found a very good preferring myself.

    Very good review thanks. A few points: It seems to me that it is very good value. Any complaints, then go and buy a £200 model with extra detail. I am very glad that you are not going to put the N.R. M.'s dogs dinner double chimney and smoke deflectors on this model. I like the s/d double chimney Scotsman, but ONLY in B. R. livery. Yes, as said the F Scotsman was originally an A1 and these did not fare well against the G.W.R.Castles on test. I believe also it had a different number in the early days. It has a round dome, but the A3's later had the 'banjo dome' as well as the corridor tender, instead of the older type with the coal rails. I could look this up in my book of the A1/3s if you need any more info, including the name of the A1 pitted against (I think Pendennis Castle). Thanks and well done.

      KingOfModelRailways i now found out it was an A1 when it was first built and them became an A3

  • @reubenc2005
    @reubenc2005 8 лет назад

    it is an A3 class because, if you've ever heard of Tornado, that is an A1 Peppercorn so Hornby are WRONG!

    • @non-binarynerd9188

      Flying Scotsman was built as an A1 which were re-classed A1/10 so the Pepercorn A1 could get it's designation.

    Hey Matt is oo gauge is big or small

    • @SeaToby11
      @SeaToby11 9 лет назад

      Sean gaming OO gauge uses the same track as HO gauge. However OO scale is a bit larger than HO scale, 1 in 76 compared to 1 in 87.

    • @lulfuckk7099

      Ok

    • @SeaToby11
      @SeaToby11 9 лет назад

      Both HO and OO use the same DC power to run their motors, but with their transformers use the wall power pack or transformer suitable for your nation's power. I run Hornby trains with its controller in the US but with a US power pack/transformer, i.e. the power brick. The British power pack/transformer would fry the trains in the US.

      SeaToby11 oo gauge is quit small but you can get smaller gauges. oo gauge is a good size not to big and not to small

      StupidityReigns Official
      She was Built in 1923 as an A1 and was rebuilt in 1947 as an A3
      After her rebuild she still retained a single chimney and did not have smoke deflectors. But had a modified boiler and a banjo dome.
      The double chimney and smoke deflectors were added between the 1950's and 1960's.
