At time so long ago, when my hair was longer than my shoulders, parted in the middle, 70 pounds lighter and my life all ahead of me. The war was finally over. A time I instantly go back to with this song. God bless the band for keeping my memories forever young and for sweet Melissa wherever she may be.
Timeless...almost written 50 years ago...gets more powerful and elegant with each decade...what a gift from Greg.
I'm named after this song. My mom passed 24 years ago. It means the world to me.
Greg Allman's voice gently reaches in, takes hold of your soul, and releases the chains holding in our deepest emotions.
This is a great example of the talent these guys had. I could listen to them forever. One kick ass band.
So sweet to hear this lovely song - unplugged
Wouldnt you have loved to have been there for this special night ..... awwwwww so sweet!!!!!! Glad it was captured so we can all enjoy this over and over again.
Despite human frailties; Duane's demise, Gregg's history, Dicky's (perhaps involuntary) departure, this video and many others exemplify THIS band's immortality! There are a lot of 'em out there, bands and band-mates that is, and music history is steeped with greatness among them, no doubt about it. THIS band stands as an incomparable pillar of guitar band greatness, from foundation to watch tower!! The Allman Brothers Band IS immortal!
No one does it better then the Allman Bros. Thanks for the memories.
What a beautiful, dazzling, profound, sublime, and striking rendition.
Tender and powerful, simply gorgeous!
I'm 20 years old and its music like this that really makes me find the simple joys in life.
70'S, warm summer nights, cold beer, down by the River with my sweety and friends, brings back good memories.
i lost my love melissa 3 yrs ago friday, she hated this song but i always liked it, so much more now R.I.P. sweet baby
The simplicity of this song and the emotion in Greggs voice moves me just as much today as it did 30 some years ago. Amazing talent.
No matter how hard life is, it's good while you're listening to this song:)
My brother named his daughter after this song, and we have played it since she was very young. She posted this version it today, her birthday, on Facebook!
I love this song! My sister in law is the only person I have ever met with this name . She is BEAUTIFUL IN EVERY WAY! This song fits her. She had never heard of my sweet ALLMAN Brothers Band so I will send this to her with love. It is such a lovely melody and is dug wit such passion. It is in my top 5 favorites you sing. I am a Georgia Peach with part Mississippi mud in my veins . Sometimes I just feels heart pull towards Georgia in my whole heart and soul and I know it is time to go.
awww its all good, my fav song. Named my daughter after this song , in teh 70's. I could hear it in any version. Thanks
33 years old. I wonder how many people my age listen to this music. And I know the story of the Allman Brothers. The emotion is visceral.

I will never get enough of this song.
I hate to say it but today you just don’t hear this level of genius in music… maybe it’s all been done.. I don’t know but this is pure genius.
Gregg still so beautiful all these years later - he still sounds beautiful too - saw him last year up close and personal with his son Devon's band Honeytribe - WOW Gregg still almost 40 years later !
greg has one of the greatest voices i've ever heard. amazing
Ah, who could tell a story better? Love it.
soothing-we all know it's just Melissa-planning a week filled with soothing, comforting music!
This song is at the top of my short list as one of the greatest songs of all times
As folk of the south - for us it was always a sweet song about Lissy. Our beloved Melissa. Aunt. Mother. Grandmother. You might even say, American Green Party Icon of strong, loving woman.
June 5 11:30pm...just got home from the Taste of Syracuse event in Syracuse New York where the 2nd day top performer FOR FREE was none other than GREGG ALLMAN!!! And he was fantastic!! Forgot the words to one song but that was the only glitch other than that he was soulful and beautiful as ever. I can't believe I saw him for free! He played Melissa, Whipping Post, Statesboro Blues, I'm no Angel...so many great songs. He looks older but he's still beautiful...
nice to see that Greg could still nail this in 1990
LOVE THIS!!! Brings back Memories!! Damn he can sing!!
What a beautiful song will miss him dearly
Great jam. Weird applause.
SOO sorry for your loss! All these years

And I thought I was the only one, ovneb ! Memories,memories..nothing but sweet memories!
Well, it is the time for the Holidays and that makes it hard for me and all the deaths in family and my PTSD from being hit on a Sidewalk waiting for light to change and head into windshield and broke left side all up, then they say head hit pavement 50 feet in a parkinglot. I CAN vouch for the MUSIC therapy!!! This gets me through the hard times. THANK YOU!!!!! ;)
ok named my daughter after this song, back in the 70's
love this man's voice, love this song, want to turn it up loud, but i can't. Am a child of the late sixties, a writer, and pretty much listened to female artists, simon and garfunkal, james taylor, donovan, anyway now retired in this small town whose main radio station the coast play Greg Allman. I never knew his name or had an album. but love him now!!!!!
i love the allman brothers and they have alot of good songs.but this one is so sweet.
Honestly how do 7 people actually dislike such a beautiful song.
The fell from heaven to be cars that were all the samely and lonely sighing with no blankets to cover him so he flew to sweet melissa with her hometown beaches she loved most.
Ahhhhhh. Just Beautiful. Wish they could all put their differences aside and get back together.
this song brings me to tears every time
i saw this video several years ago and have been unable to find it ANYWHERE until now!! ...love this version...Greg Allman awake, alert and sounding better than ever! Beautiful!
Thanks for sharing this. That performance was top quality. I he'd to keep rewinding. Damn, that's nice.
I saw them for the 7th time last week in Boston, it never gets old.....still phenomenal with Derek & Warren. My favorite band of all time!!!!
That is Warren Haynes on the end playing the black guitar. Warren is the bomb! I saw the Allman Bros in Macon, Ga on 4-23-10. They were incredible!

RIP: Duane Allman PLEASE GIVE US YOUR POWER OF THE GUITAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND JUST AS I SAID RIP: ROCK IN PEACE
May the good lord bless you gregarious Allman rip.......
amazing , til this day, a ballad beyond compare
I'm in awe, I love this song... I'm old, I know this song.. so many memories...Thanks
Dicky Betts is smoking!! This song brings back the Floads. Dedicated to Raymond and his Sweet Melissa. Raymond died of throat cancer but Man he loved his girl Melissa and some Allmans, Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet..anything old school.
I agreee. Betts often left out when ppl like to do things like "top 50 guitarists" but he should absolutely be in there every time. Sooooo smooth and sweet he makes it sound. Incredible.
My all time favorite band! nothing compares..
beautiful version, open and honest version ..thank you
I have this song on a classic rock mix tape I made sometime in the mid 80s. Sure brings back memories. Reminds me of a girl I once knew named Melissa. :-) True story.
...and all those memories come crushin' down.
In his Bio he said he wrote it and did not have a name. While in a grocery store he heard a mother telling her daughter "Melissa" to do something. Thats how the name came about. Beautiful.........
Man, Dicky Betts' guitar is from another planet.
you guy's absolutely rock! I love both for your absolute talent! personally, I have none.
Thanks for the post, I am reposting for my niece, Melissa. This song fits her so well!
No words needed!!!❤❤🎸🎸🎵❤️
I envy your new journey. Wonder what I felt the first time I heard this or Blue Sky. Still listening 40 years later.

Yeah, Gregg & Dickey Betts - a great combination - My favorite AB song of all time.
This video has made my mornings much brighter. I get up and listen to music, and since I came across this masterpiece, it has been part of my pre-work ritual. Thanks for that Mr. Selenium Rectifier. P.S. I just saw a case or selenium rectifiers come thru the salvage yard I work at.
It just don't get no better!!!!

WARMS MY HEART&SOUL!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was one of the first songs Greg ever wrote and Melissa was a Spanish toddler running around a grocery store with her mother yelling "come back Melissa".
This was also the first song Duane played slide on, on the ''Duane & Gregg Allman'' Bold Records (1973) recorded in 1968.
Greg played this song at Duane's funeral.

my first loves name. i will never forget her.....
Some of the best playing Dickey ever did.
I never knew I had a song with my name in it till a friend sang it to me on a night out
damn son... that is a smooth sound. if i could bottle it and make an alcohol out of it i wouldnt even change the name..."yeah ill have a sweet melissa..." would be heard throughout bars across the world.
i once knew a Melissa four years older than me, so my plea was wait for me to be as grown up as she so she said she can't live for centuries;(
your comment was a refreshing river of insight. You are blessed with self knowledge. I can only imagine the pain you had to go through. Thank you my brother for light in a dark place
Wonderful song about the finality of this life. It comes and goes so fast and there's so many things you wish you had not done, had done, or done better. You can only hope you've left your mark somewhere in someone's life for the better.
sends chills down your spine
awesome
this song is dedicated to my late sister Melissa n my great niece my sisters granddaughter Melissa...
Yes, my favorite Allman brothers song, and to me they were the best southern rock band well them and Marshall Tucker too. Ok Skynard was pretty great. We lived in the time that had the best music.
This song is amazing. I'm proud to say I was named after such an awsome song! :)

This is before someone told Warren he was a Rock Star, Classic Dickey and Gregg
This is a great archival piece....sound quality is ok...thanks for the post ....

Amazing rhythm and lyrics by Gregg but jesus christ, Dickie on that solo acoustic was something else!
Check out Allman smilin when Betts and Haynes are goin at it... best damn sound in the whole wide world.
WOW! These guys are believable, the timing the tempo... The newer versions of THE ABB accurately reflect this model.. Warren and Derek and Sue are all awesome... it is so cool that the ABB is as good as well...ever. Peace,Health
