Thank you! Ya know, I think its awesome that they put these monsters on D&D Beyond. I'd like to see Tome of Beasts II cleaned up next. When they ran the kickstarter, I was one of the backers that had my monster published in the book. So, someday, I might see a monster I created on D&D Beyond... that would be awesome. Where was I? Oh yeah, Swolbolds are awesome and thank you for watching. :-) Cheers!
This was a public service. Thank you for, "doing the work!" Haven't seen this from anyone! Do they have a small version? Are these related to the Monster Vault for Valiant? If so, How, in power level or selection?
Fantastic. I'm glad you found this helpful. I believe there is a pocketbook sized version that can be found on their website. Not sure how these monster revisions relate to the Monster Vault for Valiant. I'm a bit behind on their monster book for ToV, so... looks like I have some catching up to do. Cheers!
I just picked up the 2023 version based on good reviews from you and other RUclipsrs. I’m guessing that in the original version, Kobold Press used the chart on page 274 of DMG, which has way more hp for a monster of a given CR than monsters in the MM, to design the monsters. It looks like one of the edits that Kobold Press made was to modify the monsters’ hp to make them more on par with the monsters in the MM.
Ah, thank you. I'm glad you found the review helpful! And yep, you may be correct. I'm sure that the DMG was a big influence when they create their first massive Tome of Beasts volume. Also, an interesting thing about this book. I was playing Pathfinder in 2016 and switched to D&D in 2017. A lot of the monsters in the original Tome of Beasts were from the Midgard and Southlands Bestiary along with the Book of Drakes. It was really cool to see familiar favorites when I made the switch to 5E. Anyways, I'm rambling. Thanks for watching. Cheers!
So... for now I'm keeping my older printing and look up changes to my creatures as needed, if at all since some just sound more like formatting. But if Kobold Press ever comes out with a smaller copy of just the new beasts, I'd be interested in that.
Back again and I had fun reading through the book with you, it's looks streamlined and simple to read compared to the old one where they follow 5e writings and now they uses their own writing and simplify it for dms! BTW did kp changes some stuff due to the ogl issues and how dose it work for kp's new system the same or different?
Hi Isa, thank you for watching and following along with the video. I appreciate it. :-) I think the main reason that Kobold Press released this "revised edition" was because they have learned a lot in playtesting and monster design over the past 7 years and wanted to make adjustments so that the new version works well going forward. If I am not mistaken, I think this book will work for D&D and for KP's new system. Lemme know if you have anymore questions. :-) Cheers!
@@WallyDM so what happen to the old books? Can it still work despite being old and outdated like Wotc removed volo's and mtof being removed. Is the old book free or do I have to purchase despite there a new version
Great video Wally! the original Tome of Beasts is the only one I'm missing so I'm lucky I'll be able to pick this up without feeling like I bought a duplicate. I love the showcase of monsters, I got really excited to run of few these you've shown.
4:10 I like how you do not comment that the Charisma change is clearly a TYPO because the ability in the original had a +4 bonus next to it. Which means it SHOULD HAVE BEEN an 18 originally and it's still a +4 bonus in the 2023 version. So it's obvious that the "change" is actually not a change (because in both cases it was meant to be +4), it's just a fixing of a typo since again in both printings the ability had a +4 bonus next to it.
Very useful review / comparison. Thanks Wally. I think I'll be picking up the new Pocket Edition and pass my old one on to another DM - much like you plan to. Pay it forward! :D
I think I may have missed one or two, but there are supposed to be 12 NEW monsters total. This link will show you the changes: koboldpress.com/tome-of-beasts-1-what-changed/ Hope this helps! Cheers!
I already own the 2016 version so won't be spending money in the new version. I will however reflavour some of the spells to actions to prevent my players ALWAYS reaching for counterspell!
Hello wally how are you! You look great in the thumbnail, look slimmer. I will put this in my watch later list. Currently in work and I will make a comment after this
Thank you Isa! As always, much appreciated. I haven't slimmed down, but I intend to (soon). Must be the summer tan from being outside, lol. Cheers, friend!
Excellent breakdown! Looking forward to seeing the other 2 volumes + the Creature Codex make the jump! Got to have my Swolbold for D&D Beyond!

The void dragons, flame dragon, redcap and the Risen reaver new art looks FANTASTIC!
Agreed! Quite a difference on the Redcap and all are top notch, for sure. Cheers!
@@WallyDM i would say the voide dragon stands out the most, its so much better! It looks like its tearing the reality of the paper apart.

KP says these monsters follow the same power curve as the Tales of the Valiant monsters and can fit right into a ToV game

What if Tome of Beasts 2023 was from the 1st Edition era?
Like 1st edition... AD&D? Whoa. That would be intense.
Excellent montage music.
But no montage is complete without push-ups.
Push-ups and butterflies. lol. But, yep, that music was stuck in my head all day after adding it. It's a catchy tune, for sure.
I have to ask, is that the "only" new monsters or did you just show some of them?
