Finally! A true DIY video for folks who've never tiled. The rubber sanding block idea was perfect. I used a plastic putty knife instead of metal but the idea is perfect. Every other video is done by experienced tilers but they have forgotten what it's like to do this for the first time. Thank you thank you for a fresh approach that is geared for the first timer and has some really great ideas! You have a new subscriber!
Welcome aboard. Thank you I'm happy to help
What do you do on the edges where it meets the wall, trim, cabinet, countertop? Grout or caulk?
He uses grout at 6:45, but I've also seen caulk used to finish edges like that.
I have the same question. Many tilers advise using kitchen and bath silicon instead of grout because they say grout will crack and silicon doesn't crack.
Also in corners where tiles meet with tiles silicon is recommend it.
Any experts please clarify.
@@joaquinsuarez6090 I ended up using a silicon caulk and it looks great and is holding up perfectly. My one tip when caulking….. use painters tape.
@@oe542 Great, thanks.
The problem I find is when I wipe off the excess grout I end up taking off some of the grout in-between the tiles thus leaving a bad messy finish or not enough grout necessary.
Thanks for watching.
An unsanded grout should have been used since the space between the tile was less than an eighth of an inch. Also grout should not be used in the vertical joint between the tile and the wall, it is an expansion joint and will crack later.
.
What about where tiles and cabinets meet?
And where tiles meet the granite counter?
And corner where tiles meet on both sides vertically?
Please advise, need to grout tomorrow.
@@joaquinsuarez6090 you will want to use a caulk or silicone in those areas. Most grout manufacturers make a color match caulk. Those are expansion joints and will Crack if grout is used.
As I see it, there is no reference to this rubber block as being the sanding block that it is, and I just can't go with using a sanding block to spread tile grout. It's not designed for, and is the wrong tool for the job. Also I would never drag a dry sponge across the surface of the tile, because the sand will get caught in the sponge and scratch the tile. If your going to use a sponge and not a float, a damp sponge should be used at a 45 degree angle. And it should be rinsed often to get rid of the sand. When the grout fill looks right, stop messing with it and let it dry. Once dry, then use a dry towel to remove the haze, and any sand that is still on the surface will simply drop to the counter top and can be wiped away. Using a float to begin with, the right tool for the job, and all these sponge issues go away. A float is to big for the job? No thats why it's made in a rectangle. The narrow sides are perfect for smaller jobs.
Sanded or non sanded grout?Actually, the tile I have is very much smaller than what you have there. Spacers were not necessary. Smaller gaps to fill in.
Another video suggested nonsanded grout for the small gaps.
Hello, won't your utility knife scratch the tiles in the corner?
No the tile is very hard
Thanks for the video - I see with the instruction that comes with premixed grout it says - Some ceramic, glass, marble, metal or stone tiles can be scratched or damaged by the quartz sand filler. Perform a test on a small area prior to use. What's your opinion on this?
That is correct .Thanks for watching.
Appreciate the video. Our previous tilers have laid the grout and then just cleaned with a wet sponge. I first followed this technique from the video but the dry sponge didn't seem to do too much and the wet rag too often seemed to mess up my grout lines, even when i tried to avoid them. Toward the end I just switched to using a wet sponge, as i recalled having seen before, and it was a lot easier and seemed to produce better grout lines. Obviously I'm not a pro and don't really know what the downside of that approach may be...just my observation though
Thanks for watching.
Love your videos!
This is exactly the video I was looking for my DYI grout work. It covered all the steps. Thanks for the great video, Subscribed too.

I wish you had shown us how much water you added.( next time)

Some great tips (useful for my first commercial grouting job this week). Thanks for posting 😊
Glad it was helpful!
What kind of tiles are these? Size? Link by chance?
Sorry Lori I don't recall but I did get them at a big box store.
What do you use between the countertop and tile if you have space?
Caulk
perfect demo. just what I needed to see. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
what size spacer did you use? I see there was a built in 1/16 space in the tiles?
Actually I used the 1/8 .
Thank you I'm making a bunny holder with a cage that fits in like a sandbox type of setup with a frame and legs. I never tiled and grouted before but I'm tiling the inside so the bunny bathroom breaks don't seep into the wood and smell over time. Very Informative
Sounds great!Thanks for watching
Great instruction, well done video.
Glad it was helpful!
What color grout did you use? So hard to decide!
Sorry I'm not sure but I think it was white.

You bet
Using that rubber sanding block (minus the sandpaper of course) is perhaps the best tip I have ever seen for grouting.
Thanks for watching.
How about beveled tiles?
I'm happy to help.

Thanks so much for this video. I've done tiling several times, but a refresher was great.

Nice Work As Always !
Thank you for watching and your input.
Excellent video. I personally prefer to use a masonry bag or pastry bag. Way less cleanup and faster for me.
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for this easy to follow video.
Now it's off to grout my backslash. Wish me luck!
Best of luck!
Everywhere I've seen they say to use gloves, mask, and eye protection for grouting as this polyblend stuff is pretty toxic. Be sure to read instructions on the box.
You do impeccable work.
Glad you enjoyed it!
