My friends, this is the weirdest thing I've ever seen in all my years of playing GoldenEye 007... I thought the Xbox version would handle the "faceless guard glitch" of Surface 1 better than Nintendo 64, but it just revealed even more strange and unusual glitches than ever before. I've seen bizarre textures that I never thought I'd see, and unusual glitches beyond my wildest imagination. Also, we share the recent news of new speedrun world records by Perfect Ace and Calle W.

Hey Goose if you want to get a better look at the textures and strange anamolies I Highly suggest Reaching out to the "Boundary Break " channel. I'm sure that will help you out
This bug is very simple. In GoldenEye, when no texture is set on a polygon, the game will use the last texture that was rendered on the previous polygon that had a texture. This is why, for example, when you shoot rockets (which have an untextured polygon at the bottom), it will show a texture from elsewhere in the level, like a wall texture or a guard texture. It's the same with the faceless bug, but it's due to a different cause. In this case, there is a texture memory exhaustion and the game can't load new textures for objects or guards. Because the texture corresponding to a polygon couldn't be loaded, the previous texture is used. In the case of the exploding barrels, the skull texture is probably rendered last because it has to be rendered on top of the metal texture of the barrel. The next object in line to be rendered is your mine, thus it's more likely that the mine will be rendered with this texture. The textures on your mines are buggy because you loaded them into the game after there was a texture memory exhaustion. That means you must have thrown the mines only after you displayed many of the guns on screen and after spawning the Commando guards. This bug is trivial to trigger with the all weapons cheat, because loading all of those gun textures is the easiest way to create a texture exhaustion. Whatever you load last after the texture memory is exhausted is what will have buggy textures.
Wow, what a remarkable explanation! But why does this only affect some items, like nades and mines; and not say, the whole RL or entire side of the Satellite Building? And why is it kind of random when something works or not? What causes the memory exhaustion?
it probably affects objects like guard heads and mines because those are single objects that can have multiple different textures.. and maybe has something to do with throwable objects? Does it work on throwing knives or dropped guns mb?
How do you know this?
@@GamerFolklore My guess is there's a limit of probably 256 textures that can be loaded at any given time. A lot of them are probably always in use or told to never unload by the level, but anything dynamic like guard faces and projectiles might be unloaded when not in use.
Maybe separate lists of dynamic/static textures and only the dynamic ones overflow

*alarm set off on surface
creepy-pasta guards: "you've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?"
Rare has a interesting style of programming, where if the game can't find the correct sprite to load in, it'll use the next available one in memory.
It's what lead to the infamous Diddy's Kong Quest barrel throw glitch, which will literally brick the entire cartridge.
A texture glitch bricking a cart is amongst the most badass and terrifying things I've heard in a long time.
I had never heard of that glitch, but it sounds insane. I actually just played through DKC2 last month, getting the dust off my Nintendo Switch!
@@GamerFolklore I did a piece on it in a video a few years ago, but I intend to do a full video on it again soon.
But essentially, the game saves the crash, so it happens over and over when you load the game up, and the only way to get rid of the bug is to literally open up your cartridge and de-solder the battery!
@@scottwatrous Indeed, it does seem insane in the first place that its physically possible to brick a cartridge game.
@@Larry I watched the video you did on that and it makes total sense in that way it basically puts the memory in a perpetual purgatory of loading into a glitched state: like surprised it doesn't happen more often actually now that I'm aware of it.
How appropriate that a gitch would cause guards to look like Janus, the two-faced god of time, in a game where the antagonist goes by that name.
haha good catch!
We are in a golden age for finger texture content
The Insignia at 10:05 is from the hats of the guards on Train.
What it really is is Servernaya exhausted all the human guards so they had to start sending the mutants. Makes perfect sense actually
The finger texture nade made my day
Kid named finger
This glitch actually sounds incredibly exciting;
this makes the moment when you get the "Access Denied!" message from the Bunker door feel super-chilling, since you know that this will start causing all kinds of creepy behaviour from the game, and you have no idea what to expect from that point.
I will definitely try this out next time I play this game;
it is like a creepypasta that is actually real.
That's exactly how I feel!
@@GamerFolklore
It would have been perfect for an actual horror game, since it creates a huge feeling of uncertainty and mystery.
It wouldn't surprise me if some horror games have some events very much like this, where you trigger some event and then things are like "oh crap, what will happen now?".
There was this onetime when I was like 8, I played on the N64 and I decided to destroy the computer to see what would happen and I had the Invisible cheat on but when I saw all the guards circling around the building there was one guard with 4 faces. I only saw this twice in my life and I've never seen it anywhere on YT until now, I'm glad this has finally been proved and it wasn't some dream or Mandala effect.
“Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.”
So true.
Back in the 90s my brother and I left the console on overnight with this stage running and invincibility cheat running. When we woke up, the crazy faces glitch was going full throttle. We took photos using our old point and shoot cameras, got the pictures developed and sent them in to Nintendo Power. Nothing happened but I'm glad to see that this is a well-known thing now. Now that I'm older and I know how these games work, I assume it's just some overflow error from a memory leak.
I love seeing these glitches (although the guards with multiple faces is a bit freaky. Gives a new meaning to "Janus" guards, doesn't it?)
I remember only ever having guards show up with three faces if I played a level too long and I always thought it was just to drive home the " Janus" alias of 006 in a hilarious way
I have seen the face glitch myself without cheats active, but you really have to spawn a lot of guards at the same time to get it to happen. It’s really hard to survive it especially with all the snipers that load
Finger Grenade can't hurt you, Finger Grenade isn't real...
On a different note, just because of the slight spookiness of this, it gives me vibes of finding tales of the Halo 2 Lockout Ghost, which is something you might find interest in yourself, Goose.
Most definitely, all the time me and my sisters spent running around in Goldeneye, if we had ever encountered this glitch, it would have been EXCEPTIONALLY creepy. We already had an unintentional pasttime of post-midnight face-finding in old video game wall textures. The N64 to Xbox era was really good for that, and would, in my opinion, make some fun halloween content.
I'll try to read into the Halo 2 Lockout Ghost, sounds intriguing!
Some of this would have been good for a Halloween video. 😨
7:52 I guess you can call it a "hand" grenade
I love how calle w went from a really sick fox in melee to a top tier goldeneye runner
This is just incredible. I thought it was because of the TV or something when I saw all the guards looking like Minecraft blocky characters.
I love discovering that Goose has uploaded again
This is truly a mystery for the ages - right up there with the Shroud of Turin and Shakespeare Authorship. Thousands of hours will be spent deciphering and unravelling this ultimate enigma. You are a brave creator for going public with these potentially dangerous and esoteric revelations.
Don't forget the Voynich Manuscript and the Chicago Ghost.
Man, this gave my otherwise boring day at the office a boost. Just love this stuff. Goldeneye continues to amaze and delight. I was 15 when it came out and still play the N64 version to this day.
I love how you start by deadpan talking about normal game stuff in this level without addressing the monkey stuff going on on the screen, until 5 minutes into the segment.
I much prefer this format for small announcements over those abominable shorts. Great video, Goose!
lol I’m loving the prospect of a creepypasta where the game’s pretty normal but a ghost throws a milkbottle at the protagonist
I should write the full version!
Back on the original N64, if you ran multiplayer with invincibility on and infinite mines(GameShark may be required, i don't remember) after about the first 200 mine explosions or so, the mines would occasionally start floating and rendering without any details.
Very bizarre seeing this glitch again 25 years later. Goes to show that you can find almost anything on youtube.
Definitely something weird going on in memory, I wonder what is going on? If there could be a way to load textures into other parts of ram or if any other adresses are being written to, if it can modify active memory addresses it could open up a lot of new glitches- trigger objectives to complete or trigger the end of the level for ILs, unlock levels or even arbitrary code execution if you can somehow cause an overflow or modify protected memory, probably not, but it is a nice thought. Is the X-box version a port or an emulator? Could explain the differences in how the glitch pesents as N64 emulators are famous for buggy textures.
_"My friends; it just keeps glitching... "_
A cozy blanket, Warm fireplace , And a big bowl of Magic Spoon™cereal elevated my watching experience. 10/10 could not recommend enough
I'm glad you got that Trademark in there.
Xbox player here, i'm happy i finally could play and beat GoldenEye 007 this year, thanks to this remaster.
Game preservation is important.
It's true.
You also could have bought a N64 you know 😋
@@peterstuyvesant9815not practical for most people, especially with the inflated price of retro games now
@@bromax360 15 - 20 euro's for a goldeneye cart isnt that much imo.
@@peterstuyvesant9815 Both the console and the game are extremely expenseful where i live, Brazil. And is not that pratical. Imho i did the smart move waiting to come out for Xbox One. Sorry for my english, btw.
I remember discovering this glitch back in the day. Left my n64 on for days to experiment with it. Cool we finally have an explanation for it now
I just heard goose say "something for you at the end of the video!" and I'm laughing imagining just a "No."
Surface's texture memory is set too low. At mission start, only one random male head is loaded in (on the Commandant). Once the alarm triggers, it then adds three additional heads, on top of a whole other body (Arctic Camo). With memory limited, things start going bad. It may get worse depending on the arrangement of heads, as well. Some use an extra texture or two than others. With the right combo, that could lead to more funky stuff happening. Of course, having all guns just means even more in memory. Mine and/or grenade props might get affected if either is only used/thrown after the trouble begins.
...oh. I thought your channel intro line was legit "My friends, it just keeps happening" but I guess that shows which videos I typically watch.
The surface 1&2 are just dumping grounds for every unused object within the game that's why it's so broken. You cannot get the glitch accurately without cheats on that's the only way specifically "All Guns" "Infinite Ammo" "Paintball Mode" and "Fast Animation" "DK Mode is only optional". The only way I ever got it to always work was I aimed with the sniper rifle and shot each individual key with a paintball on the keypad located outside the bunker main entrance and makes the glitch work all the time.
When I tried this glitch James and the guards begin to bleed out hyperrealistic blood from their eyes.
I almost believe it.
I once dropped the cartridge before putting it in the console and when I played I found a guard with his pants down taking an actual shit in the toilet on Facility.
I started eating Magic Spoon cereal and it changed my life. It even cured my micropenis.
What the hell
"Abomination..." but a hilarious abomination! Finger texture grenade?! So awesome! Thanks for the great vid man...
Yes, folks. Please don't drink untextured grenades
Great video Goose, i find this kinda stuff really fascinating

So the positive of Goldeneye "Definitive Edition," is to get more unique glitches. Figures. 🤣
Love your videos man! Keep 'em coming.
You know what they say - when life gives you fingers, make fingernades.
Congratulations on the 100.000 subs. You deserve it
Siberian Special Forces is my character for multi-player. The skin blends in to most levels.
At 10 minutes isnt that the texture from the guards hats, the little gold badge on the front perhaps? Interesting...
there's always been a problem with rendering things through see-through surfaces
Craziest concept ever….just go ask Rare what’s going on

So will the game receive any updates/patches, or not? Regarding the problems with the music and the lack of filters.
I really doubt it.
@@GamerFolklore How so?
wake me up when theres a dam credits warp lol. This game continues to get unraveled. Lots of passion still for it over 2 decades later.
There HAS to be someone who can run memory checks in an emulator while this is running
it. just. keeps. HAPPENING!
I suspect its to do with graphics memory getting accidentally overwritten by data related to the level. In addition to texture data itself, you also need data to control how it maps to the 3D geometry, if that's corrupted that could explain the 3 faces. As for wrong textures, bad offsets into arrays or pointers getting scrambled, interesting that it takes on the textures of nearby objects, if it was just standard overwriting i would expect it to be random textures based on memory positions rather than world position. Maybe the game is moving textures around in memory based on their proximity for some kind of weird optimizations that made sense 25 years ago? There's a certain joy in old code, sometimes you see some truly wacky logic to take advantage of specialist hardware features or push things to the limit that you just don't see now days.
Hear me out! Promoting Magic Spoon while eating a bowl in your cabin next to the fireplace during another fireside chat! It's been too long since the last! That aside, thanks for keeping these amazing videos coming!
Your ammo picture turns into MissingNo.
When Calle W decides to attack the rest of the game, he’s going to walk the leaderboard.
Gz on 100k goose
Well I suppose the mines taking on the explosive/death symbol of the barrels as a more "permanent" appearance than the other ones is fitting considering it's letting you know in advance what it's about to do to the person, lol
So that nade explosion can also be called a "finger bang"? 🤣
Damn, Ace set that record on my birthday? Fucking pog.
A fresh upload? Don’t mind if I do!
These grenade glitches look like old ww2 bombs dropped out of b52s
congrats on the sponsor Goose
welcome my friends to truely remarkable times 😅 we have had not one, not two, but three goldeneye videos in a fortnight , this is truely remarkable lol
I posit that mouth textures showing up on objects would be far more horrifying than fingers. We got off easy.
what ran at 10:54 by? a hidden monster?
Well, from only the loosest understanding of how the game is programmed; my conjecture is that there's some weird funkiness with how many textures are being loaded at a time when the All Guns cheat is activated. The reason why it snaps to that particular part of the barrel texture is; I'm betting that either the skull and crossbones is a completely separate texture that's applied as a decal to the barrel, or it could be closest part of the texture to the origin point (0,0) on the texture. It's possible that, when a new group of guards is spawned it _might_ allocate the textures again, and you might be running out of memory that's been set aside for the textures. It shouldn't matter if it's on the N64 or XBox, because they probably set a very specific amount of memory aside to use for textures. So even if you added gigabytes of RAM to an N64, Goldeneye would never actually use any of that extra RAM, because it probably doesn't just search for any amount of available memory, because at the time the N64 had a very set amount of RAM available. Or, even if it _does_ try to use any available memory, the emulator would still have probably only set aside 4 or so megabytes of RAM too use for the emulated N64 memory, because that's what the N64 actually used for its real hardware.
Mind you, this is all off the cuff, using information from memory with no firm research involved. So treat this with a _thick_ pinch of salt because this is _only_ speculation of what _could_ possibly be happening.
The blank names are actually snow texture nades
Great video!!
Did you ever feel the zoom button on the Xbox version with 3.1 was just a crosshair on screen/zoom? You can still move around and everything, doesn't function like n64
My friends, it just keeps happening
Id recommend trying this on the n64 with the jumper and expansion pack
Bro literally throws a mini nuke at you that’s some super mutant shit
Thanks for the video
Really curious what that cereal is actually made of if it has no grain, no glucose, no soy, nothing organic really
Sad an emulation on a modern console can't handle a old game
That's gotta be memory corruption of some sort, I don't know how so much could break down otherwise
Maybe eventually, the right movement and actions could lead to code execution like in OoT
My 18 year hiatus of playing this game is about is about to come to an end. I can't take it anymore.
Its aliens from perfect dark bleeding through into golden eye
I wanna try that Magic Spoon stuff sometime but that corpo art style on the box ruins it for me.
It just keeps happening
I have never seen this glitch ever!! WTF?!?!!?!
Missed opertunity for online multiplayer tho.
Do you have any plans for covering the xbox world records?
If they're interesting and notable, sure. It could get interesting if the Xbox records get lower than the N64 ones.
Inb4 this leads to ACE in Goldeneye
Lol that looks like a nuke.
