The woodie saves the day: One conversation leads to many finds | Barn Find Hunter - Ep. 56

- Tom always says, “You need to drive a classic to find a classic.” Why? It’s a perfect icebreaker for someone to approach you or for you to approach them. In this episode, after Tom comes up empty-handed all morning, the woodie prevails. A gentleman approaches Tom, curious about the woodie and gives him a lead, which leads to another, and another and another. It turned out to be a prosperous day of barn-find hunting.

Since Roadkill is no longer on RUclips, this is my new favourite car show!!
Same
Exactly!
yah yah yah :)))
I agree
“Hey mister, can we have our drone back?” [insert growl of junkyard dog] 😂
Mont is one hell of a nice Fella
yea he sure was. He really needs help finishing up his fathers truck
The motor in the Skylark is the same 350 that was offered in the Buick GS. This engine was available in all Skylark models for 1970 only.
any info on the rear end?
What a great Skylark. I have a 70 Convertible with the 350 2bbl but buckets and console. All the Buick’s back then were extremely well put together. Great show!
@@jordibarlow1307 . nothing special i'm sure . 10 bolt .
Love it !
Srh AuoSports:
Aluminum Differential was an extra-cost Option back then....if has one of those along with a few other odd-ball "Extra Cost" axles back then.....then yes, they become highly valuable for their low-production count.
Ah, A teaser ending!!! Nice Drone Flyby! Anxious to see if you're fortunate enough to get into the tomb! Cheers Tom! Zip~
Wow, that is a beautiful view from that garage, it can't get any bet.....OH SH*T, he's got a ragtop '70 Skylark. The motor was the same as the GS350. Hi-comp pistons, 4 bbl and dual exhaust. 410 lbs torque @ 3800 rpm. Don't know about the rear - factory was the standard 10 bolt, unless it got swapped out for a 12 bolt later on.
Really enjoying these new videos . Tom can we please have a video on your personal collection ?
Great call !
I would really like to see his collection and I am sure i'm not the only one lol
Man, road trip, old cars and nice peoples. What a good life and thanks for sharing. Have a good day.
Wow, who the heck was shooting that one??? The camera angles, lighting, sound, best ever... Amazing work! Keep it up!
Awesome ending with the drone
Epic giggles ! 🤣🤣
well we know he got in the yard , otherwise we would have never seen the footage , they got the drone back somehow LOL
@@towrecker I'll take the Dodge Dart ( '72+?? ) RIGHT at the end , thanks . $2K ??
Or the Orange & white Caddy Ambulance ..... LOL
As someone in the UK these shows are great but so frustrating. Seems like you can pick up these classic cars from all over the damn place in the US and get them running with enough patience. Over here even a busted up vintage car will cost you as much or more than a used modern car a few years old if it has any potential. Shitty weather, metal just doesn't last.
Phil Roberts it is getting pretty high here in Canada too. Everybody now "I know what I have" kind of guy
I think the show is a little misleading, as myself growing up in southern Utah I know the area well and I can tell you from all the scenes they were filming in they wouldn't have enough daylight to film all this in one day. St George is down in a hole at the bottom end of the state, but for the most part, the rest of Utah suffers from somewhat harsh Winters. The biggest thing here is and always has been is muscle car era Chevys, remember this era ended in the early 70s and since then American cars have been mostly crap and worthless. It is very difficult to find any car from this era here without substantial body rot and even complete frame rot. People want an absurd amount of money for things like Chevelles, Camaros, and old C10 pickups. I found the 71 Chevelle without an engine that had been sitting in a field for it looked like a few decades with a rotten body and rotten interior and the guy wanted $15,000 for it. Volkswagen buses are another thing that people have gotten crazy about, I consider myself lucky to even see one actually driving down the street. 20 years ago when I was in high school my buddies and I drove around to all the little towns hunting cars, and muscle cars where around back then but they're not there anymore.
I recently had one of Tom’s book, Motor City Barn Finds, come in the mail. It was absolutely worth it. Keep up the good work, Tom!
i dont mean to be offtopic but does any of you know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account??
I stupidly forgot my password. I would love any assistance you can offer me.
@Dillon Emery instablaster :)
@Myles Ernesto Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm trying it out atm.
Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Myles Ernesto It did the trick and I now got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thank you so much, you saved my account!
@Dillon Emery you are welcome =)
The guy with the mustang has zero personality
he looked like he just woke up, still half asleep.
And hadn’t done a bowl yet.
he prob already did 2 just before
Nope. Yup.
Not everyone randomly is prepared to have a camera thrown in their face.
I'd love to ride with you any day. I've always loved just to cruise through the countryside, but now you've got me looking for hidden gems.
That garage on the hill with the view is awesome!
How could you get everything done with that view a chair and a couple of beers 🍻
Definitely one of my mos favorite series on RUclips.
Always thought a restored Squareback would be a cool daily driver...hope that dude gets his up and running sooner rather than later.
Another Tom Cotter Epic.......can't wait for Part 2.......easily one of the best series on The Tube...keep them coming please.
Dan - Thank you for watching. Many more episodes to come!
Oh man, drone operator is gonna be looking for a new job now!
Grouchy Dude gots it! :-)
How did they get the footage then?
Nah just wait for the rest of the footage.
Of tui to a 7vda0f
Honest guy, no fuss and great camerawork. Great show. 1000x beter than on tv right now.
Pure VW...go like hell, when they run....good luck getting it up and performing. it's worth it
Tom, Great Video As Usual. Next Time, Come About 20 Miles North To The Hurricane & Toquerville Area. We Have Some Cool Patina'd Eye Candy Too. If I See That Yellow Woody, Im Chasing You Down.
Great video Tom. Love the editing with the drone. I hope he didn't lose the drone in the junk yard.
One of the few British cars I saw in Cuba was a Morris Minor 👍🏻
Tom, Tom Tom, You own a '67 Shelby, and you and the son of the owner of the Mustang thought that it was a '65 Mustang Hardtop (Notchback).... It's clearly a 1966 Mustang Hardtop (Notchback). Why didn't you correct him?!???? The sun must be getting to you. Keep up the great videos... :o) Tony K. 1966 Sprint 200 Mustang Registry, MCA#70001
I kept screaming "its a 66!" at my screen. Lol. The grill and side trim are dead giveaways.
Damn I love that squareback!!!
I live an hour north of St. George, but work delivering packages in St. George. I have delivered to Jeremy (the square back VW). There aren't many barn finds in St. George, but go north an hour to Cedar City and Parowan or an additional hour to Beaver and you will find more cars for the show.
The 216 Chevy 6 had splash feed oil to the babbit connecting rods but had pressure to the mains. The 235 was all pressure.
Eric Holt I took a head off a 235 that was in a 56 Chevy
Heaviest head I ever lifted
Love what you do, it's amazing all the finds just keep coming, if only we had the same situation here in the UK
My mum learnt to drive in a Morris Minor. I've always said to myself that I'll own one myself one day. They seem to appear every so often to remind me. Saw one yesterday in fact. Not so uncommon to see in England when there's a warm spell.
I had a 67 GS 340 and didn't know a thing about it, other than I was the second owner. Sure wish I hadn't given it to my Mother in law.
A very interesting, well done episode. I hope you're able to get your drone back. I suspect that since we've seen the footage, you got it back. At least I hope so. :-)
I like Mont. Cool guy.
Terrific video as always Tom! I was wondering how many miles you put on that Woody in a year as you travel around looking for your barn finds?
i had a 68 Squareback that i did with the patina thing, lots off cool add ons like surf board, old antique coke cooler and old kiods tricycle/rims/some interior panels, all new chrome ,red tinted the windows for awhile then change it up some with another set of wheels ,best thing was 1st year fuel injected ! i won many awards with that cool car,i loved it!
Love The Moggie ( Morris Minor ) Brit nickname 😎
She was a car that you could fall in love with and be a loyal friend 😍
"...And what's the name of that road? Hidden Valley Ranch?..."
Lol
Headline, Group of hippies come up missing in town of Beaver. Foul play?
You got a great production team Tom, great for us home viewers to travel and see these old cars!
The Saint George area is mostly new growth with retirees & escapees from California, not a particularly hot spot for backyard finds but you still managed to turn out a good video.
Saint George resident here. Agree.
Square back love them. Had a 74 when I lived in Australia back in 90’s. Ultimate surf wagon👍
FAVORITE SHOW on RUclips!!! I tell everyone about it.... If you ever make it back to Arizona I know a place where there are some old desert barn finds.
Tom if you stop in the Salt Lake area please reach out, we have a few cars you would appreciate seeing! 2 of which were barn finds and both are air cooled VW’s
Well I cant wait for the next episode
Tom, Very good as always. Warts and all is best. Keep it real. Regards Stephen.
The drummer from WASP / LA Guns ?
You Tom are what we call in Australia a top bloke. Best series on YT, I actually get cranky if I'm unable to watch new content straight after receiving a notification.
Hoping that you're able to continue producing more episodes, they always bring a smile to my face..
Rob - Thank you for the kind words. Many more to come. Stay tuned!
I hope you make your way down to SLC and Ogden is where you’ll find old classics everywhere.
Leave a Mustang outside for a couple of decades where I live and it will disintegrate.
Where I'm from it would just be a rusty stain on the earth. 🤣
Calgary Alberta, it can snow , rain , hail and be full sunshine all in one day.
Great video, and a funny ending. Hope "Grumpy" lets you in to retrieve it.
that green bus is nice!
I have a Morris minor if you still looking for one
Mr. You run a great show👍
Tom if your still in utah you should come check out carbon county gold mine for great finds. East carbon is bo huffs home town his son still builds cars out there and they have old store building with bo's cars and a lot of history. Theres a Bunch of old vw's in Wellington if your driving north to price its right off the highway on the end of town
I need to get my 78 vw camper going now, needs new gas tank. Looks just like this one.
My Grandfather had a yellow Morris Minor.
My grandfather also had one in Hola Blue in New Zealand. His pride and joy. Wish we still had the car :(
Nice one! Sweet drone footage too!
The white mustang is in similar condition to the one I inherited from my aunt. I daily drove it until it hit 100,000 miles then I parked it outside, I have it out of the elements now. My family says sell but of course I can't.
Give Nathan a Hagerty subscription maybe it'll motivate him(& his dad)to restore that 'stang!...Mont's Vdub is way cool!. Hopefully that'll get done too!
good episode!
Nathan ended up getting it running, but the bottom was completely rusted out. He ended up selling it to someone that pretty much bought it for the motor
Best show on RUclips! How about a special Tom Cotton episode to see and hear about his own cars???
That last part with the drone and the music was Awesome! You got Skills. Keep on rocking.
I think the Mustang was a 66 coup.
It’s a 66 for sure. Grille, side fins and dash
I'm sure this comment will get buried since this was posted 2 years ago, but I wanted to share some fun facts about that VW Camper.
That particular camper is a "Riviera Camper". It left VW as a normal VW bay window bus. So how did it become a camper? Well in the 70's VW couldn't make enough campers (built in collaboration Westfalia) to appease the market. In fact, VW of north america required that for every Westfalia camper ordered for a dealer lot a normal VW bus had to be ordered as well. Which often left dealers with too many normal VW buses. However, at Riviera motors in Portland OR, they decided it was lucrative enough to take these extra (non-camper) buses and do their own camper conversion to them. They partnered with a local furniture maker in Vancouver, WA and the Riviera camper was born. Riviera's are easily distinguished because their pop-top opens straight up, as opposed to the slanting pop-top of the westfalia.
More fun facts, eventually VW got word about what Riviera was doing to the secondary buses. Rather than shutting them down, they sent a bunch of engineers to Portland and the two groups collaborated on ways to improve the camper. Many or Riviera's original camper layouts were used in the late 70's buses which were the roomiest of the bunch.
Chances are that bus started its life in Riviera's lot in Portland, OR.
Anyways, I just love that story.
I love Tom's style. Great job ! I am always excited when I see a new episode pop up. Absolutely Love this series.
Great series ! That 3 car garage is the ultimate “Man Cave”
Absolutely, fantastic cinderblock shop with a great view.
If you ever pass through Barstow CA look me up. I have some interesting stuff you may like....
You wouldn't tease us with that ending only to have the guy hang up on you next episode. Would you?
I Thought I bought a 2 dr coupe and found out the last shop had messed it up. Constantly losing compression. I was at a friends house working on it When my parents drove up and told me the woman I was buying it from had called the police and reported it stolen. Her story changed many times and finally she said I asked to test drive it. I had spent a month working on the car, Airing up the tires, New carpet. Custom Gear shift knob. Plus, I had carried a battery 1/2 a mile to put in the car.Everyone had doubt about me stealing it and after talking with neighbors The police asked me to bring it back.3 houses down the Homeowner ripped into my dad and told him I had spent countless hrs working on the car and that the woman was crazy. When we brought the car back her Husband came for the keys. He told me he knew I didn't steal it. ( Unfortunately He filed for Divorce the next day)
The rambunctious customer conclusively murder because paperback diagnostically recognise for a wonderful potato. extra-large extra-small exuberant, roasted character
My only VW Van, was bought in Seattle, in 83. It was a 10 years old jewel. I converted it into a camper. Drove from Seattle to LA, CA.
Looks like you're going in! Great ending.
That black monster bus looked awesome to bad you have no taste for strange stuff like that
Have you ever thought of going on Google maps (Satellite View) for the town you are about to visit and checking the surroundings? Surely you will be able to spot wrecking yards and start there?
I'm still trying to figure out why the guy with the square-back has a
solid block wall dividing the backyard? Not a fence but a block wall?
If anyone is looking for cool old cars try Willie's junk yard in Earlsboral Oklahoma it off hwy 9 between Tecumseh Ok Earlsboral Ok.
that 48 is dam near like my 49 im redoin. but mines 3 window. but mine also has a 54 235 full pressure engine in it. just finished going through entire engine and trans and painting and etc etc. cant wait to be able to stick er back in and drive :)))
Really enjoy this show 👍🏼👍🏼 ..i love classic cars but this woody really isn't doing anything for me 👎🏼
That red VW square back was what mom and dad brought me home in, in 1967. We had that car for a long time. They had that one, a VW bus and a bug back in the 60s.
I wonder about making one of those older small wagons into a time attack track car. Perhaps Subaru drivetrain. Awd, 2.5l turbo
Tom, you are A legend! Thank you for another great video!
Geez , I always drool watching these videos!....haha
Success! More to come.
Great RUclips Channel best regards From Edinburgh Scotland
I build and repair anything. Tom, you keep us hotrodders in-check! I live for VW and Audi and old fords

Wow been watching your videos , awesome , the guy with the view and the VW bus , your sharp eyes caught that , and the guy was dope ! 👍💨💨
I guess you never know what you're going to come across you got to love it. 👍👍🇨🇦
I want the tail finish panel on the green or orange Dart or Valiant; owner is crabby? We will drone your yard. At least they got the drone back.
btw only diff between his 48 and my 49 besides the 2 extra windows is in 49 they moved it from 3 speed in the floor to 3 speed column shift
Another great episode!
It’s funny talking to someone you never are going to know where it leads to
Great video thank you
looks like tom is not a mustang guru or fan , but thats okay, but thats a 66 not a 65, very easy to identify by the grill
Cars & camping gear collected from people who 'vanished'. Think I saw that film.
that's a crazy story,, Tom Cotter, if your ever up in Ontario my dad and I have a yard you would love to see!!
Ha !! I have a Morris Minor ! Its a 56 two door, split window with a slightly less than 1 litre heartbeat. I put a black leather interior in it from a 93 Prelude (the back seats plop right in but the front seats and console needed some help) then stripped all the duco off by hand. Next I deliberately rusted its bare metal with warm water and vinegar then belted it with about 5 coats of clear. After filling the boot with speakers and installing gas lifts for both the trunk and bonnet I unfortunately stumbled upon a 67 Cougar that asked me to take it home...
Awesome
If any Aussie viewers (Syd) are looking for a Morris Minor To do up, let me know. I've got one that's looking for a good home. Its decent, straight as.
Victor I'm in Sydney looking for anything interested. How do I get in touch?
Yep Victor
@@porsche356a let me know when you've got it so I can delete it.
@@victorbitter583 got it thanks Victor pls delete. Will give you a call tomorrow. Thanks
@@porsche356a No worries. Any time between 10 am and 12 pm will be fine. cheers.
Fantastic show but how in the heck do you not know the year of a Mustang. It's a 66 clear as the day.
I don't know about you, but for me this VW guy is whole lot of a storyteller, isn't he?
Want to sell those cars? Take a picture of each, and put them on Ebay. Start now.
Rockin the Boothbay hat!! Maine ❤️. Love this series!!
Another great video! Thanks for sharing
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching.
Just wondering if and how, the ownership of the abandoned '64 VW was legally transferred to the landowner who put it in his barn. Was it reported to authorities and inherited like .....finders-keepers?
somethings in life cannot be explained...
Thanks allot,Tom.
Excellent,as usual !!!!
You're very welcome! Thanks for being a fan.
