Film AND digital: the eternal answer.

It is great that the younger generation are embracing film photography and in a way keeping it alive. I think it complements digital very well in that you can use the principles of film photography in digital. I that you can slow you work process down and think about what and how you are shooting as well try to get the shot right in camera rather than spends hours behind a computer correcting the image. I shoot both but for me having grown up in an analogue age with film this medium has always been close to my heart. I guess as well we do become fed up of the fast clinical world of digital and it is great to go back to something organic and something that truly tests you as a creative photographer.

The biggest and strongest argument for film is archiving

Nice presentation! Today the big draw towards film seems to be frame limits (and colors), so make them count. I agree with that because, in my teens, I started with a Pentax Spotmatic (still have it too) and TriX400 film. Yes the limited frames makes a difference and instills a thinking approach over the “delete and fix it on the next shot” attitude that comes with digital. But personally I really don’t want to go back to film because the of processing and expanse (my last darkroom was a 3’x5’ closet for developing and printing). So, I shoot digital with film practices, manual mode, raw files, a handheld light meter and I measure white balance too. No relying on camera settings. I also use a 17y/o CCD sensor camera for my Are Bure Boke photography that I’ve started to do lately.

my reasons for shooting film are pretty similar to yours, it makes you think more. the whole process is just way more conscious. like playing a vinyl record. you look into your record shelf. you think, oh yes, this one. you get the record out of the sleeve, you open the record player's dust cover, you put the record down, you clean the dust off, you put the needle down, you sit down on your armchair and listen. then you flip it. it's just very different to hitting shuffle on your spotify playlist. does it sound better? no, on the contrary, the quality is very easily measurable and worse. but to most human ears, it's enough. many people would say it absolutely sounds better to justify their financial commitment, but in the end they just really like the process and the physical product.

I used to carry around 5 lenses with me at all times. Wide, macro, zoom, telephoto and a 50mm. (Digital mirrorless) a tripod. Speedy light and mini-tripod.
Today I only use one lens (50mm lens) and a 35 SLR Body (36 exposures) which I am trying to lower to 24 or even 12 exposures.

i agree with all of your points. i would just add that for my personal work, it helps me to have weeks or months between when i take the photo and when i see it, because it means that i can look at the photo a bit more objectively, without the excitement of how i took the photo or where i was taking over

Shoot both, time and finances permitting. Film is a very different experience than digital, and capturing the moment or the idea or the feeling with an image can have many paths, each of them a rewarding experience.

I started on film, then shot digital for a couple decades or so, and now am finding myself starting to shoot film again. I find the more the world tries to push me into digital everything, the more "AI" and data tracking become the sole purpose for all things electronic, the more I want to step away from it when I can. Sometimes I pull the sim card out of my iPhone and put it into a little flip phone. Sometimes I use my typewriters or pen and paper instead of my computer. And sometimes I shoot on film.

great video! I started back in the early 90's shooting film and was hesitant to switch to digital in 2005/6 due to quality and I was building my business, and even to this day when I shoot film its a much more pleasant experience for me and my subject. No distractions with staring at images on a computer screen seeking perfection. So much is lost in the flow when you shoot digitally.

I agree. Film is more enjoyable for me. Some people love the digital editing process - I loathe it. I enjoy seeing the photo I took develop :)

Film smells funny. I like the ability to edit my stuff on the fly. Maybe someday I’ll get a film camera for fun.

I love film but it's way too expensive for me. I saved up for a Sigma dp2 Merrill and I'm so happy I did bc it's such a perfect midway between digital and film and cost wise it's on the digital side

I shoot my Fujifilm and Leica digital very much like their film equivalents. I do shoot more on digital but I don’t often take more than one exposure of any given scene. Even when shooting fast-paced events, my cameras are always set to Single shot.

The main reason for me is developing and printing. I fucking love wet printing!
The real reason is so I have an excuse as to why my photos are mediocre

i agree completely the only reason that trumps all others is your "choice" its the ultimate freedom and nobody can or should try to tell you otherwise photography is already toxically polarised by the "what brand" is best conundrum!lets all just start judging photography on nothing other than the two most important factors in my humble opinion and those are the final image and the enjoyment you achieve from taking the picture! and great videos by the way thanks!

Just tools. I love both. I learn as much as I can on how I can get the most out of my tools. Final image. Show me the print.

I like the tactile aspect of shooting film. I love the way film cameras feel in my hands. I love that I don't have to go through a menu to set what I want to set. It also allows me to be really present in the shot.

Large format photography has not been replaced by digital. There is no viable digital alternative to sheet film.
