Theo and Bee gave up their busy city lifestyles in 2014 to explore alternative living, and have lived in vans and boats since then without looking back! Along with their cat Ginjey Bear they have been driving around the world in their self converted Sprinter van. However, when the global pandemic hit they began converting their abandoned stone barn in Central Portugal to turn into a wonderful tiny stone cottage. Along the way, they have rescued a playful cat called Furrnando and have a wonderful flock of Chickens!

Chapter 27
In 1969 my two brothers and my parents drove to Alaska from South Dakota in June. We camped in a large canvas tent every night and got pretty efficient at putting it up, taking it down and stowing it in the car. Then there were 1500 miles of very dry unpaved road. We would meet trucks trailing huge clouds of dust and almost have to stop to let the air clear before we could move on. The road was paved when we crossed over into Alaska and it was good but lots of undulations so we only would go 35-45 mph. On one stretch a moose came running out of the ditch and tried to jump the car. It smashed a bit of the hood and caved in the passenger side of the windshield. We had several hundred miles to go to Anchorage where we could get the windshield replaced. We also drove an unpaved road to Denali. They were working on the road and there were random stakes and rocks in the road. We hit one and punctured the gas tank. We plugged it with a bar of soap and limped into a village at the edge of Denali. No one there at a service shop to repair the tank but a park employee offered to remove it, weld it and put it back on. He didn't even want to charge us for it! Dad gave him something like $20 which seemed like a lot of money but definitely a bargain in the situation! This saga goes on and on. What a trip and you brought back many memories.

The best road trip of my life was in late summer 1999. My husband was in the Coast Guard, stationed in Florida and we got orders to CG air Station Kodiak. We took nearly a month to drive there (over 6000 miles) and tent camped the entire way with our 10 and 4 yr old daughters. Driving the Alaska Canada hwy was the most picturesque beauty I'd ever seen. After our 4 yrs in Kodiak and 16 yrs in the CG, we finally got stationed in our home town of San Diego. After 4 yrs there, we went back to Kodiak. We of course drove again, but this time had a pop-up camper. It was fun and beautiful of course, but nothing will ever compare to the 1st time, pitching a tent every night and having young children who saw the wonder in everything.
Poor theo , bad back, used to suffer badly myself . I invested in a sciatica relief belt from amazon . It's a really good make. It's the best thing ever. The first signs of a twinge it's on and stays on until it improves . Support your back when it asks for it . Really works for me . 😊

Ahhh, I am another Sunday morning coffee and catch up with you two. Here on Vancouver Island, bears eagles,and deer are a regular sight in our neighborhoods as we do our best to co habitate with them. Elk, salmon, and seals are part of our lives. I never lose sight of how blessed I am to live here.
We absolutely loved Vancouver island when we visited last year, what a gorgeous place you call home!

I’ve driven that trip the opposite direction in 1989. Dang remote adventure with 2 kids, a cat and dog, after living in Anchorage for 12 years. So glad you had the experience.

I can’t believe we nearly crossed paths! That would’ve been so awesome! Anyway, I’m glad you’re back safely. My dad’s lifelong dream was Alaska. He was on hospice care because he was dying. On May 6 we removed him from care and my sister, mother and some of my sister’s adult kids flew from North Carolina to Seattle, got on a cruise and went to Tracy Arm Fjord, Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Victoria BC. It was absolutely beautiful! We got balcony rooms so Daddy could lie on his bed and look out the window when he was too tired to be in his reclining wheelchair. We knew it was his last trip so we did everything we could to make him comfortable. Even though his health was bad, he even managed to smile some. The only reason we didn’t go sooner was of course Covid. We had to reschedule and then my niece became pregnant and baby had to be over 6 mos to cruise. Anyway, we came back home on the 16th and Daddy passed peacefully the 31st. We wouldn’t change it for anything. Alaska was his dream but it was the dream I didn’t know I had! I’m ready to go again one day but a road trip would be so cool! ❤

I lived in Anchorage for 13 years. In the summerI worked as a bartender and scheduled 8 tens and 6 days off. I would pack my car before the last 10 and leave for camping, fishing and gold panning at 3am when I was off. I never made it back with more then half hour to shower and get back to work. I never had so much fun in my life. The secret to fishing lake trout for me was to find a lake with dragon flys. As long as you staid right on the lake and out of the brush you could actually skinny dip mosquito free.

You two have worked so hard that I'm glad you hard the opportunity to go on vacation, you deserved it. About 12 years ago my mom and I drove from Forks,Washington to Terrace, BC, Canada to spend 10 days with some friends. One very long day they drove us to Hyder, Alaska to show us some amazing glaciers. It was an amazing trip and so beautiful long the way. That was the longest trip north I've ever been, but I've also been as far south as Mexico. I've also been from Hawaii to South Carolina. This world is a beautiful place.
Never been to Canada or America been lots places in Europe

I know it can be so expensive to travel here through this wave of post-pandemic gauging and I always feel badly for visitors from outside the country as well as those living here, making more beautiful when the spirit of the land comes through still clear in moments like the camping and canoes. I loved hearing you found a way and enjoyed yourself to boot, especially having some down time since you both work so hard. Its been wonderful to watch your unfolding story each week, thank you! In fact, you both and the circle of van lifers sharing their journeys inspired me recently to be brave and start a channel to share the ocean and sounds that had been healing for me after an injury. One day, I hope to share more of my story in front of the camera as I begin a new project - the first like this since the injury - its a process to grow more comfortable and you both are brave 🌸💜🌺

Oh I am so happy you had a great time on your adventure! The F250 is what I grew up driving so it doesn't seem big to me. Amazing what perspective and experience do for you. Hubby/I began our 1 1/2 month holiday in our RV and 5 days in broke ankle & travelled back home…one week later cellulitis. Still getting rec pills/IV antibiotics. So instead of fishing, swimming, boating and enjoying nature, I’m home on couch for duration of summer. So bummed as we missed our family weekend too. Learned a lesson in holding plans loosely. Need to re think what we can do perhaps in fall. Alaska looks marvellous❤
