  • What can you do with an architecture degree?
Architecture is the design and development of structures that are functional, pleasing to the eye, and culturally significant. You can expect to take courses such as environmental design, building systems, and architectural history which will prepare you to design structures and create spaces that are useful, safe, and visually appealing. If you’ve ever wanted to be the one to design the picture on the front of a Lego box -- or, you know, help people and the world functionally coexist -- a degree in architecture might be for you!

An important subject that is missing from this video is the topic of licensing. Obviously this differs from country to country (or even region to region), and I recognize that this video is trying to be relatively location agnostic. However, if a student’s ultimate goal is to get a license in architecture (required if they are going to go on and run their own firm, or even advance far within the profession), at least in the US they will need to get a degree from a school that has been accredited. This is a big decision to be making when you’re looking at schools, as choosing a non-accredited institution can require additional years of study (usually a masters) after your Bachelor’s degree if you ultimately desire to become licensed. Whereas an accredited program will give you a BArch (different than a Bachelor of Science in Architecture or similar degrees) allowing you to go through the licensing process directly out of school, and sometimes even while attending. These programs are often 5 years though, so again an important consideration. Plus, if you look to become licensed, you’ll need to deal tracking hours in the profession for your first few years, and studying for and passing a number of large exams. Learning is never done in the architecture field for sure!
