With the release of brand new MMO Palia NDA and the closed beta... I finally got my thoughts down on paper after about 20 hours of playing. In this video we will answer the question:
Is Palia an MMORPG for you? and is it even worth playing?
I have gone into this game with a completely unbiased opinion because I understand that the game is not aimed for me anyway.

In the Aid of Avoiding longer term Spoilers in the video I have written up a much more indepth review below.
Once you have completed the initial "Starting Area" the game does open up with an interesting story surrounding the mystery of the ancient human ruins.a very large, Well designed new zone opens up that offers a new tier of materials exclusive to that zone.In addition there is more verticality to climb up and interesting ways to utilise your glider making the exploration in this zone very fun.I can see where they're going with their format and down the line as the Beta is fleshed out and more content is added, New zones will most certainly be part of that expansion. There are additional progression mechanics related to Renoun as a currency that you spend to increase your maximum focus bar but, this right now feels a little shallow and lack luster. I can see this side of the game being expanded later on with a possible skill tree of some kind instead of a binary increase in maximum focus Points.I would feel excited to head to a shrine after accumulating 100 focus points if I knew i was about to unlock a new perk in a specific proffessions skill tree.as for the skill progression itself. Unfortunately it is bare bones right now and upgrades are just gated by levels, materials and Gold... AKA: just the standard gameplay loop. However, as I mentioned in the video, the waiting around for materials to process does not improve as the game goes on, only increases in tedium when materials like cloth and hide and added to the Ore, Stone, Clay and Wood that I showed in the video. As your housing plot expands you gain the ability to place down more processing stations but that is sadly, not a very fun mechanic for me personally.I understand that the point is too go out, fill your bags, come back to your home and then process it so you can head out and explore again, but this gameplay loop is just far too casual and time gatey for me.I would much rather consume MORE materials for a few seconds instead of the standard material consumption for a few minutes. Perhaps the option to do this in the future can be explored? (Coming from Ashes of Creation I like to think my feedback is being heard)This obviously extends to the housing plots and expansions. It just isn't a mechanic I enjoy and I would rather spend DOUBLE even TRIPLE the ammount of materials to finish these builds instantly. 8 Hours for the starting house almost made me quit the game immidiately because I just wanted to progress. I find it fun to be rewarded for the work I put in, I do not find it fun to wait an arbitrary ammount of time just because the game says so.Active play is always more fun than passive play :)I hope you guys enjoy your time in palia and fingers crossed the Devs are some real Gs and continue to improve the game!

Real happy you went easy in this game.
I appreciate your balanced take, and I was fully expecting you to dunk on this game.
You're great Narc!
He called it an "MMO for Facebook moms". If that's not going hard on a game, idk what is lol
@dawgyv72 Lmao cuz It marketed at super casuals, and it doesn't hide it at all.
It's a banger dig, but it's also true. It is hilariously accurate, and a joke only Narc can make.
I guess I had a Facebook mom in me the whole time, and didn't even know hahaha
I'm a mom and yes I love this game so far, definately not some raiding end game rush type game, like you said it's cozy and meant to be a stress relief not something that causes stress
Your crops don't even die if you forget to water them, they just stop growing lol
If your a mother then maybe you should focus on your kid and life instead of trying to escape to a new life
@jamesd5767 salty much? Hahaha
Why wouldn't a mother be able to play video games? Try again😉
@@jamesd5767 *You're - it's a 5 letter word. Come on. And to your point: Mums can absolutely enjoy a casual game in their precious free time to get a bit of stress relief. You need to mind your own business, and STFU. 👍

I once read a Stardew Valley review written by a competitive FPS guy who said it was his guilty pleasure for unwinding after his regular gaming sessions. I think Palia could be like that as well, even moreso for the MMORPG crowd with its MMO-lite framework and the potential it holds for chill questing and adventuring with friends. There is A LOT they could do with this game down the line and I'm looking forward to seeing how it progresses. Really curious to know what all is on their longterm roadmap. Cozy games have really been exploding in recent years and I'm happy devs are giving the genre so much love.
I was Interested until I found out it's 25 person highly instanced world.
If it was a massive open world with real world player housing I'd be a lot more hyped
It's a great cozy game. You come and go, without fear of missing out, falling behind on progression. You choose what you want to do. I've seen plenty of other players, and I love that it prioritizes your friends being on the same server.
FYI
You Do Not have to stay in bird eye view to edit.
I use left "CTRL" and edit my house in 3rd person.
Bird eye view is really only needed when moving giant objects like your house.
Credit where Credit is due, you went into it with a very level-headed approach, you didn't bash the game for what it wasn't. You even aknowledged that the game is simply not for you personally. And yet, despite that, you still managed to see the appeal of it and why people might be interested.
This kind of open-minded mindset is.... EXTREMELY rare on the internet, many people these days will call a game "Trash" just because it doesn't appeal to them specifically.
And you know what? GOOD, not every games should aim to appeal to the vast majority. Because doing so usually prevents devs from trying something entirely new, which, as a results, prevents the Rise of entirely new genres.
So yeah, great video man.
A correction is needed, you *can* speed up processing your resources by buying advanced lumber/smelting/etc crafting stations after reaching higher levels of those associated professions.
i state this in the video as a disclaimer on the bottom of the screen :)
@@Narcthe game ui stole the attention away from that text, so I missed it on the first watch myself, might need to be visible for a bit longer
I was lucky enough to get into the short CB a day ago, there are bugs and that is to be expected, the devs are VERY active on fixing issues as fast as possible, when it comes to crafting at your workbench and gatherable items, you can actually make a request for that item via the Social (O) and giving this to a request helps other players and gives you a currency (forget the name) so its a win win there, you can do up to about 5 requests and it has a timer of about 60min. It maybe a laid back almost zero battle not MMO, but it is worth playing if you like lore, crafting and exploring.
One thing i noticed strait up was the fact that people were asking in chat how to do something that was explained clearly in the tutorial popups, if you are a skip it all type of person then personally i wouldn't play the game as you will be just asking how to do stuff in the chat all the time when you should already know it, but if your one that can skip tutorials ant spend the time to work it out then that is different. One thing i will say is i wish they would make it do you can keep the chat window open all the time, because if you don't check it you miss most of what is said, i also noticed that if you go to your plot (instanced house zone) you the chat is blank, so you cant see what has been said while in your instanced space. Anyway there are other bits and bobs that i could mention but this is already long enough and they are always changing/fixing things, all in all if you like that layback crafter/exploring type game PLAY IT on the 10th (OB) if you don't have an invite to the CB.
Yes, it is exactly for me. That's why I'm playing it already ☺️
8:45 ish: The way to speed up material processing is by getting more crafter slots and unlocking the upgraded processing machines.
Appreciate the review of something other than AOC. A welcomed changeup.
I think Palia's goal is great. If it has enough content I think it's a really good casual game for those more caual players the ones that liked Second Life and stuff like that. Nothing wrong with that :)
I'm interested in giving it a try, I like the idea that someone is appealing to a more RP-centric or Animal Crossing-tier playerbase. If they do want more RPing, though, they might want to open up character customization a bit. I see there's purple people, and I bet a lot would like to play as one.
I think Palia being called a cozy mmo is actually a perfect description. Id say the Narc community are looking for an MMORPG rather than any MMO. Also, Session/Instanced based MMOs are valid and Open World MMOs have entirely different design philosophies.
Palia will be a nice social experience for casual gaming which is half the reason why i look forward to AoC so I'll take it for now
You won't be doing anything social in this game.
This is not an MMO. 25 player server instances does not equal an MMO.
@@2inverse469 already have been tho...
@@resresres1 Everyone is entitled to a wrong opinion
I’m excited to give it a try. Does the progression build toward anything other than customizing my home/appearance ?
Nope.
1. It's not an MMO.
2. It has the depth of secondary systems of most other games.
3. I like the "soft launch" approach and think more games should take that road. The faster players are in the faster the game will get better for the core playerbase that will see the game through.
1. its an mmo , its a sims mmo . But its not an RPG therefore yes its an mmo , a sims mmo but not an mmorpg. MMO means massively multiplayer online game which Palia is.
@@symphonixblades I wouldn't call Palia massively multiplayer since the instances are capped at 25 meaning we only see 25 or so people the regions aren't linked together. It's an online multiplayer game, but not massive by any means. I hardly see anyone running around. Usually when I see that amount of players running around in an MMO that's a sign that the game isn't active.
@@symphonixblades Ehhh; quite a stretch to put that first M on with a 25 player cap.
@@heartless_gamer well the devs call it a sims mmo also it's possible that closed beta having a maximum number of players have servers with less people I'm not seeing them keep 25 people maximum per channel once the game launches
@@symphonixbladesare you going to comment the same thing everywhere? 💀
I think it's great so far for what it is. Nice change of pace and great to play with the lady.
PPL should play ECO if they want something this small but that covers everything related to pve crafting gathering building hunting etc
It's a super chill game but I definitely wouldn't consider it an MMO. It's just a shared world cozy game atm.
Its a sims mmo , its not an mmorpg but its indeed an mmo
@@symphonixblades it is not an MMO. That is like saying diablo 4 or Battlefield is an MMO. There is no "massive" in the massive multiplayer.
@@resresres1 the devs of the game called it a sim mmo so go complain to the game devs about that. I'm just calling it what the devs call it
I'm a big MMORPG enjoyer... I'm personally just excited to have this kind of game to play with my spouse.
You can't play it with her. You will both be building separate farms. She can edit the things you place down, but she cannot place anything herself and none of the progression can be linked with another player. There is no Co op.
@@2inverse469I think he meant that he was going to enjoy teaming up with her to do stuff together in general.
@@Nightowl5454 I know what he said. There is literally nothing to do together, is my point, nothing at all. Other than stand in town and look at each other.
@2inverse469 you can gather materials and hunt, but other than that no there currently isn't bosses to fight or PVP so I do feel as though it's currently more like a socializing app, than an MMO/MMORPG game. I wonder about the game's profitability and if they'll continue to develop it when people finally get bored and stop playing because of the monotony.
No combat, not even a health bar?
Yeah, you can miss me on that. Listening to this, I'm almost certain I was lured in long ago by the mention of former warcraft devs, and the "it's warcraft meets started valley" line.
But I can see now, it isn't that at all. Not even close. Oh well, can't say I was very invested anyway lol
Yea it was overly hyped. The game is an empty shell with a lot of grind sadly.
I am worried that it is getting over hyped. I really hope it is a amazing game.
I have been playing for a few hours and I think this game was made with a very particular kind of player in mind, it's going to do okay if it reaches the right audience
It is over hyped and very grindy.
Already 100% sure my wife will make me play this with her
yeah going to make my husband play this with me XD
simple solution for wayting on produce being procesed. colect more produce, get a surplus. you wil need it later (like in all other games like it)
i was super excited for this , got to play closed beta. was enjoying it until i saw the timers and shop and noped out ...
I started the game, thought it was pretty cool - and then couldn't get the rake to work and couldn't find help to make it work. So, I had no choice but to delete it. It seemed promising, and I'll definitely keep checking on the game every now and then to see how its coming along. :)
darn guess i didnt get an close beta invite for that one :p gotta wait for open beta i guess
Certainly not an MMORPG, definitely a cozy sim MO.
Not my type of game but i can clearly see it's appeal for the casual audience.
i think it could be a nice calm down game after a bunch of tough raiding for a few hours
They have redefined MMO. Medium-multiplayer-online.
Is 25 players really considered medium at this point? I hope that number increases over time. That said there has been some mention of perhaps hosting your own server which would be amazing for friends.
Fine...miniscule-mulitiplayer-online.
I love the chill Valheim background music for the chill game review, very nice choice.
I was playing valheim while I was listening to this review but my headset was off so I was confused. How am I hearing the valheim music...then I realized 😂
They should add a tier-layered cave system like SDV tbh
Yea, hunting deer gets old fast.
can't wait to give this game a try :)
Riiight?! I'm super excited. Seems like a great cozy game to play. I love having a bit of reprieve from all the shooters, and games centered around fighting/dungeon crawling. It's shaping up to be that perfect sort of game.
Comfy cozy is my vibeee~
Loved Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon. Game pretty much replicates those games but adding multi-player persistent stuff. Been fun, very cozy.
wtf this didn't show in my recommended, youtube pls
I've seen people talk about this graphics style as fortnite or pixar but I'm getting "Jak and Daxter" vibes from it. And that's something I can get behind. Though this is not my style of game. I actually thing taking a chill relax and farm style game shouldn't be an time gated MMO.
If someone got bored of stardew valley and like the game, they would love this game for sure. But yea I was looking for something like runescape, guild wars, albion online, WoW etc...
A new Narc vid is a good day.
Tbf after burning 200 hours on Valheim I think I'll atleast try this out. And maybe I'll join the mums
I so want to play this game. I want to know about the 25 p/shard limit. What happens if you get onto a shard where you literally don't know anyone, and perhaps don't want to even know them... Then also what happens if you want to play with a group of friends (my case)... how do you organise this. No streamer seems to be answering this question?
there is a friend system. it is possible to join your friend.. on their shard . Got me a closed beta invite :)
Can't wait for a beta key, personally.
Reminds me of My Time at Portia
I appreciate you saying the game isn't for you. I think too many people write games off because they don't have something that attracts the reviewer.
Now we can tell anyone wining about corruption in ashes of Creation we can tell them to go play Palia.
Perfect game for carebears and I say that with no malice, as it looks like a good game for my friends and I to play while waiting for ashes.
Pretty excited about this game and I know I'm gonna get bored at this game so fast 😂.
Glad to see that you gave this game a fair shot. 💜
As far as I know, it's basically just multiplayer Stardew Valley and that's all it needs to be :)
Except Stardew feels more engaging and rewarding. This one feels like a grind.
Is that valheim music in the background? :)
0:01 keep dreamiing Narc 😂
Love your content
its not an mmo to begin with, i love cozy games and im ready to play it :D
Its an mmo , its not an mmorpg , its a sims mmo . MMO and MMORPG is NOT the same thing , you can have mmos that arent RPGs
I love how he recognizes that BG3 is out today, and this game doesn't stand a chance against it. But also its not the same audience.
The life skilling content looks good and I'm trying to get a code atm. I like what I'm seeing in streams. But....I'm concerned about group content in the game. Streamers I asked didn't even understand me, when I asked them about it. Seems like doing something with others doesn't extent to much more then"Oh look at that" and telling them" Oh, you're xyz is so cute".
you are rewarded for doing a few things together in this game. if you help someone cut down a tree, you both get the wood. if you help someone mine copper you both get the copper. if you both shoot at a deer(you dont even need to land your shot) you both get the hide/meat.
If you fish with other people it gives you a boost. There are trees that can really only be cut down with the help of other people. You can give permission to people to edit your plot so a friend can technically help you decorate which is something people in animal crossing really wanted. My favorite part though is that you can cook with your friends too. c:
"A cop-out and an excuse to release an unfinished game"?? What are you talking about? The game is still in beta. Just entered its open beta phaze. No where near release yet. You have to judge the beta for what it is.
The pain in my heart a from you going at New World like that
Let's see if this is a good business direction
Copium Inhaler best char name ever i laughed soo hard😂
90% of my time giving Palia a try I had one question: does this game *really* need to be an online game at its core? Sure, there are lots of things in the game that work better with online multiplayer, but there are so many solo activities you do only for yourself that it feels like it should be an offline game with a few features that allow online multiplayer.
"if you're not here it's because I ran out of room idiots"
Nothing against the game itself, but calling it an MMO is a little bit of a stretch.
Its a sim mmo , mmo means massively multiplayer online game which Palia is that therefore Palia is an mmo . is Palia an mmorpg tho? Not really Palia isnt an rpg , therefore Palia is a sims mmo , not an mmorpg but still an mmo
@@symphonixblades bro 25 players is not massive.
Nope not at all it is a MMO no mater how you look at it i think youre confused with MMORPG
I think mmo has become its own term, like rpgs being called “DnD”, even though it isn’t.
So it's farmville on steroids...
Nah, its Portia or Stardew Valley on boredom and grind.
one thing i kinda wish is to have an option to not play on a server where there are other players but in your own world. especially since my pc is not that good and i think it would lessen the lag a bit lol
then... it wouldn't be an mmo??? there's lots of single player farming sims available y'know.
the only beta i get is for game i dont have any desire to play unlucky
Farming and romance usually arent in mmos unless its just marrying other players or the one case of star wars like 15 romancable npcs because ea had romance in all their games at one point
I welcome more romance in games that arent boring visual novels lol
This game is good fo chilling. I tend to play games like this whenever a hardcore game gets into my nervers. 😂
As a New World player that hurt.
At least it is playable.
The game sounds like a visual upgrade to eco
time to go bot so i can impress facebook moms
+1 Like for playing Palia over Baldur's Gate 3 for us. Thank you.
I presented this game to my wife and her mother as a Adult animal Crossing. They are interested lol.
cozy games arent bad, but is there any kind of economy ? can i sell my super rare fish or what do i do with them ? yes im on copium heading to overdose
In order to meet the definition of MMOG, a game needs to have at least 100 players. Palia's 25 players is not enough. So if the company behind it is claiming it's an MMOG, they are simply wrong and that's false advertising. Also, calling any game an "MMO" or a "massively multiplayer online" doesn't even make sense. Gotta add the G or game at the end. It's like telling someone to DPS.
I don't think so.
It doesn't do much that other farming sim games don't already fill, but unlike those games Palia has live service baggage and isn't really an MMO as playable instances cap out at 25 players so you're not really sharing a world with hundreds-thousands of other players, thus not really an MMO.
Another example of a game that uses "MMO" as a marketing and monetization scheme than actually offering an MMO experience that a single player/co-op game can provide.
Thanks so much ;D
Game is almost identical to the My Time At series, just without the basic combat and a few other features. Palia is just more polished and online.
Yes, they took pretty much everything from there. Even fishing mechanic is taken from Portia, which is usually different in every game.
sims, harvest moon edition
Palia is not an MMO, it's an MO, Multiplayer Online, just not massively so.
why is this a mmo? it feels like this should be a single player game
seems like a nice casual game, but scummy needs to be called out.
They have an imaginary currency so when you buy 1100 imaginary coins, you can get a skin with 100 leftover and nothing costs 100 (for example)
The game is unique in its approach and looks promising, though it does have some.. interesting choices, which could be considered weird if not tone deaf.
could you elaborate on this?
Good game to play after a match of Tarkov.
In the meantime, Archeage Classic - a private server is launching tomorrow. It will be version 3.0. Is that the version Stephen played? Would be about 6 years ago.
Tried this game when it released. I seriously struggle to see why I should play this over anything else in the same genre. The first thought that struck me is how incredibly dead the game world feels. It's just a vastly lesser version of any of the others, like Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing, hell even Disneys new game is better. And none of them have MTX in the game.
Good Review
Please, please, please, add a "ba dum tsss" sound effect every time you make a joke about New World or Amazon.
yes it looks like fortnight but yanno what its still cute. efficiency doesn't matter and I don't have to use my brain? hell yeah this for me
No combat no gameplay.
Sayonara.
The cosmetics ar way over price also they force u to buy special coin in budle so use more money then u need to sleazy ingame shop
So Palia is Stardewvalley, but 3d?
My Time At Portia/Sandrock is Stardew Valley 3D.
And Palia is My Time At Portia/Sandrock MMO.
Quite literally. Its nothing but a SDV clone with multiplayer. The single player experience is boring and abyssmal
i would gladly play a sims-like MMO that has no combat.
but 25 player servers???????? HAHAHAHAHAH WTF NO.
and that is not an MMO. Neither is Destiny or PoE or all the other games falsely labeled as such.
Okay but hear me out. What if you could host your own server for your friends?
@@Justplanecrazy25 sure, that would be a nice option. And maybe you could even customize the rules.
But you should also be able to join official servers, with at the very least a couple hundred people.
Is Palia an MMO?
What I got from this is if I wanna find single moms I play this game??
Like bdo with no combat
I’d rather play animal crossing. As the game stands now, there’s just not a lot of content available. Also, there’s only two zones on the map currently to explore… both of which are quite small. I understand that this game is an early access game, but it seems to be far from finished.
Yup... feels more like an alpha than a beta.
Sounds like Disneys dreamlight valey or nintendos animal crossing
MMORPG as in Moderate, not massive
Palia is an intersting concept, but there's unfortunately little depth in the game mechanics and progression system to motivate me to continue playing.
i mean as of now that's kinda to be expected, they are still in very early beta so a lot of things will be added or changed.
That's what happens when game developers try to copy Runescape and Harvest Moon or Rune Factory.
@@davidmmendonca4536 The core mechanics of the game are already finished, they're just very shallow. I think the developers went far out of their way to super simplify everything for the lowest common denominator. Makes me want AoC that much more.
What kind of depth are you looking for exactly? This is on par with games like animal crossing which enough for millions of people.
