- Smyrna and Riverdale High School basketball teams are sidelined this morning. Referees caught both squads playing to lose their games over the weekend. Don Dahler reports on the motives of the teams.
You can still throw a game without making it so obvious. Low IQ players and coaches.
Coaches had big ego's. Making under 10k a year. I blame them. Never a good reason to tank a game.

This isn't as bad as what my school did. High school basketball here doesnt have a shot clock. In the championship game they won by playing keep away the whole game. I think the score was like 14-10. Even our student section was saying WTF

If the whole team fouls out you have to play a whole starting 5 and everyone gets and additional 2 fouls and when they used these fouls they have to start playing without said players

That’s how Playoffs Work. This is probably a 4 v 5 matchup and winner plays #1 and loser plays in the Consolation Bracket

Joe Maddock what she is saying is true except for the consolation part. They were probably lower in the bracket like lets say 9th and 10th and the winner probably played the 1st seed and the loser played the 4th seed. with that logic they have more of a chance beating the 4th seed than the best ranked team in the tournament so losing on purpose would mean they would get out of having to play the best team during the first round and have that much more of a chance to advance closer to the next rounds. it gives them an advantage to not go against the beat team in the first round.

In many states, high school brackets are now seeded by computer "power rankings", rather than coaches' rankings, so it's possible a good team will be underseeded if they play in a weak district, for example. That was likely the case here. Or maybe the team in question recovered from a bunch of injuries early in the season.
Alex Sabastiani They were both trying to avoid getting in Nationally ranked Blackman High schools half of the bracket in the Region Tournament. This was the district tournament. It goes 1 vs 3 in one district against 2 vs 4 from the other district on one side of the Region bracket. And etc...that's how winning would have ended their season...still a B.S. move by these two schools.
that is standard procedure for any type of contest. The winner advances to the next higher level of the competition. In some sports, losing sends you in a lower bracket and you many get a second chance at going for the championship; The only time you shouldn't play well is in a rout where you get these 180-10 games. Then you ease off as much as you can. College baseball and softball have the "mercy rule" where if a team goes too far ahead then the game is stopped and the team leading is declared the winner. For high school, and college this might be considered for a division rule. question is how high is too high

Most sports give the better team the advantage, like NCAA playoffs both football and basketball, where 1 would play 16 in basketball, and 1 would play 4 in football. The only "sport" that I would say works the way this high school program did is in billiards, and that can vary based on the bar...

jack trust me, they weren't beatable. Smyrna and riverdale were in the same district as Blackman and they each played Blackman a few times and each time they got blown out. I think by at least 40 points

I don't get what the fuss is all about. If it is in your best interest to lose; then lose. Strategy is strategy. Your goal is to win the tournament. Sometimes you have to lose a battle in order to win the war.

I don't get why this is an issue. Was it because they made it obvious? What if they just purposely missed all shots by 'this much'? The person who should be suspended and fined is whoever came up with the championship bracket. Personally, watching a game that both teams are trying to lose would be fairly entertaining.

It's an issue because of poor sportsmanship and make a mockery of the game.
Is it poor sportsmanship when you sit your 1st and 2nd team in week 16 because you are already locked into the playoffs? What if both teams decided before the game to flip a coin and the loser forfeited? Would that be poor sportsmanship? Both teams are playing to win, and this matchup is irrelevant to either of theirs playoff eligibility, but it does have implications on their chance for success in the playoffs. I don't see the issue. Sandbagging for favorable playoff matchups happens all the time. This was just more blatant.
Doug Sholly - Absolutely I think it's poor sportsmanship when teams sits players and only play 2nd stringers. I understand there are teams that do it, especially at the professional level, it doesn't mean it's right. And I think there's a clear difference between playing your backups and purposely losing. At least with your 2nd/3rd players, they are still competing to win the game. It may not be the best the team had to offer, but they are still competing to win. Purposely losing on the other hand is one of the lowest form of unsportsmanship. It's the same as professional teams purposely losing to get a high draft pick next year. Do people do it? Sure but it doesn't mean it's right or sportsman like.

It’s sad that’s these teams are scared to play a powerhouse team, they should have tried their hardest and go face the powerhouse team. When I go up against people who are better then me in sports I go all out and try my best. It doesn’t matter if you win or lose it matters if you try your hardest and at the end of the day you know you gave everything you could.
What if the whole match the one team scored in the other teams basket and the other did it to and then the home team made them lose and the arena started play all I do is win

I wish my high school had a shot clock, one of the first few games I played we weren't trying to lose, we were just very hesitant so the end score was 10-12 because no one wanted to take shots

I go to Smyrna and it's really embarrassing to be honest. It makes our school look bad. I have nothing against these girls but they should have tried. If the coaches really did tell them to do bad ( don't think that they would but that's what everyone thinks) why would they do it still if they knew it was wrong. If the girls wanna play college basketball it's going to look bad on their record. But yay they beat riverdale!
