Wow! Each room is its own vault. That’s pretty neat.

I can't image something like this being done today.

I remember seeing this in the news when it was being built, I was 10 at the time. The first time I saw the hotel in person was in 1971 for my first trip to San Antonio. Most of the hemisphere structures were still in place then too. I did not stay in the hotel then. But nowadays whenever we go to to SA we always stay in the Palacio del Rio

I watched this the first time when I was 12 years old. We were staying in that hotel for the pharmacy convention in the mid 70s. This video was provided to keep the children occupied.

I remember seeing it built. I must admit, the Hemishpere Tower seemed to be more talked about. My grandfather was visiting when the Hilton was being assembled and he was amazed with the modular construction method.

I have pictures of the Big Red Crane mentioned that set the rooms, It was a Manitowoc Ringer crane that being used for the first time . Iwtwas provided by Boehck Engineering out of Houston and my Dad was the mechanic/technician tasked with setting it up in that tight construction site.

Today, it would take 25 years to dig the hole for the foundation.

Monolithic Modular Rooms. Wonder how that construction is holding up after all these years? Not well… I suspect.

I’m at the hotel now. It’s all up to date and seems good to me. They’re building another Hilton across the street for the 2025 Final Four.
