So inspiring and uplifting to hear a doctor today who respects the patient and values their social situation, and looks at any medical procedure and profitability only through the holistic context of the patient and the family and their welfare. This was the norm a few decades ago when many GPs and family physicians lived by the code Dr Cyric Abbey Philips is sharing in this episode. That compassion and empathy made the physician more than a professional, into a real human being upholding the essence of humanity and helping to rekindle that spirit in the community.
The doctors were the part of the community in which they worked, and the community looked up to the doctor as a good friend and trusted guide. This system has mostly been lost at least in India under the pressure for increasing specialisation. The relationship of trust between the physician and the patient has shrunk. It is perhaps not incidental that mistrust towards the healthcare has ballooned, which at times manifests into animosity and even violence. This is the price of prioritising profitability at the cost of patients. No market nor society can survive let alone thrive by sacrificing their primary stakeholders. This can only happen when the legal and regulatory framework has completely distorted the healthcare sector turning into a sellers market. Unfortunately, the corporate sector particularly in healthcare, while mouthing the mantra of the market, have largely sought to leverage the regulatory distortions in pursuit of maximising their own benefits and profitability, imposing huge costs on patients and the society at large.
