  • Ever wonder what it is really like to intern at an architecture firm? It's always great to know what working in an architecture firm is like before you committed to majoring / studying in architecture. There are a lot of things I did not expect in the architecture firm. And what the architectural interns do vs. the licensed architects are completely different as well!! So today, I go over what it is really like working in an architecture firm.

    During my internship, working 12 - 15 hours a day was considered normal. It was a small firm, so the workload was tremendous! But I feel like you learn way more at smaller firms than the bigger ones (since there aren't separate departments for drafting / modelling etc.).

    I'm a year late to comment I guess :) However, my experience as a trainee was completely different: I designed some stuff on my own with almost complete freedom, I rendered my designs, I helped with an important PowerPoint presentation, I joined meetings with clients and landscape engineers (just to learn how it goes, but I ended up giving my opinion and a challenge they faced and they seemed to appreciate it), etc. That being said, I think I was able to benefit a lot because the firm was well known in my country yet it was a small firm where everyone works on various things. If I had interned at a large firm, I would've probably drew construction drawings and bathroom details :)

    im 16 and i think im very creative. i have always been into designing stuff whether it was minecraft, making music, or doing wood tech. I LOVE working with my hands and being creative, but I don't know if i should go into architecture or an engineer or whatever. do you get to be hands on as an architect?

    • @karolinagrabowska3456
      @karolinagrabowska3456 3 года назад +2

      But like artistic sculpture in wood? Or houses and some miniature models?
      As an architecture student for sure - a loooot of models,
      later rather computer programs... but of course like everything - it depends.... there are tons of options, you can "produce" things when you finish school.
      I guess studying gives a "sense of form" and better understanding of design (of course with the focus on architecture, its history construction, rules etc.), and an opportunity to get some feedback on your ideas (not only from professors, also other students, friends).
      You can check out creating models in computer programs - what do you think about it, do you enjoy it if you haven't tried yet. (CAD, Blender, 3DS,... btw it's a nice point in resume)
      You can also try to work as a volunteer or intern during summer in the jobs which you consider as an option for the future job - 16 is not too early to do it... (it's not working for free - you learn and observe professionals or if not accepted at least find out what the requirements are ;) )
      If you plan to be a boss then think about permissions (you know.. like some jobs require having degree,, some don't, studing is a way to get a degree, knowledge you must find on your own, and earning a living is yet another thing...)
      :) hope it will make a bit of sense :)

    • @UnravelingArchitecture
      @UnravelingArchitecture  3 года назад

      You need to get your education components out of the way. So if you go to an undergrad university that is not accredited you will need to get a masters. I talk about it more here: ruclips.net/video/dCqqiLtHXK4/видео.html
