I just had an incredible experience with this album. I listened to it today, for the very first time. I had been having anxiety crisis all week. This morning I felt exhausted and just sick of everything. And then I decided to play the album. The first thing I noticed was that the songs were very calming and soothing. And I said “what?”. I mean, the music is very loud, very intense and has a lot of feeling into it. It felt like a raging sea with a colossal storm over it. But…. Chelsea’s voice was the captain of a strong boat that was enduring that storm. It was her voice in the middle of this hell that gave me relief and strength. I started to feel that no matter how terrible my mind is… I was going endure it. An then I got home and read this about Hiss Spun in Wikipedia: “In an interview for Noisey, Wolfe explained that the album's topics deal with her confronting various health issues: "I deal with extreme anxiety that gets exacerbated by bouts of insomnia [...] I’m constantly trying to find ways to calm down… That has manifested into addiction at times [and] I carried a lot of that into this record, especially on '16 Psyche' and 'Spun'.” Well, you just gotta lover Chelsea Wolfe. Her power goes beyond.
I get hit by these unexpected spirals where I just start going downhill and downhill fast. I have this CD in my car. A few dozen miles, a few songs, and maybe (probably) some crying later and I feel exhausted but calm and solid. She's seriously, seriously incredible!
I have had a similar experience with this album, I can’t seem to stop listening to it. Anytime I feel overwhelmed, or needing calming, I listen to Hiss Spun.

Definitely felt like I was watching the type of video I would have waited all day to see on a music video count down in the early 2000s. I dig it. This album is shaping up so nicely. Not that I ever thought it wouldn't. She can do no wrong in my book.
I was scrolling through to see if anybody else got a late 90s/early 00's vibe from this. Like I get this impression of Smashing Pumpkins/Marilyn Manson and a whiff of a few others from that time. I know she's worked with Chino Moreno.

Raw. I like how Chelsea both impulsively and consciously chooses the direction of her work's progression. I also like the difference in the music video style with the full band performing, fits great with the particular song. Other tracks require a story told completely separate of the artist some times but this felt so right. Great work to everyone involved. Thank you Sargent House for continuing to support and enable great art, we need it more than ever.
She’s so stirring and arresting and on certain notes it’s like you’re falling from the sky and her voice bellows for miles of atmospheres as you plummet. Only way to skydive and be in a concert at the same time imo. Such a fucking beautiful musician. The guitarists and drummers are lucky people and great musicians in their own right
If I told you how many times I've played this. It wouldn't be "healthy" Found this while chasing a storm. Jesus, perfect timing. Beautiful song. Thank you.
So maybe this is fairly obvious to everyone else, but I'd still like to discuss it: So 16 Psyche is likely referencing Psyche and Cupid's relationship, and the song itself is obviously about sexual relationships, and probably the inhibitions as well as satisfactions that come with them. Cupid is, in a very literal sense, a kind of rapey concept, kinda like love potions, and the video has a lot of restrictive imagery going on, so my take on the song, but especially on the video, is that it discusses female sexuality, which was already a subject early into Wolfe's career ("Mer" is a great example). So, in my view, the video basically furthers the song's narrative of female sexuality, and visualizes historical treatment of it. Women's desires have often be cast aside, ignored, violated, or put on a pedestal, but rarely ever seen as inherently valid in themselves, and by extension, women have been treated the same. Whether positive or negative, they often were pigeonhole'd in some manner. The latex straight jacket is a great image to convey how often the fetishization of female desire restricts women, or sometimes even shames them into hiding it. The other scene, with her in a normal straight jacket and held down by medical personnel could represent how female sexuality and want has even be said to be a disease (I know it sounds absurd, but remember that women were treated for "hysteria" and a doctor would make them forcefully orgasm to "cure" them). To me, the restricted posture, the tangled hair, and how the group of people loom over her and hold her down honestly looks kinda like a gang raping a victim, and it's a terrible image for me, but that's what it looks like to me. So all in all, I think the video and song both exclaim the pleasure and desire of being sexually free, specifically so from a female point of view, but also talks about how women are treated for exactly these two things, and the struggles that come with them. Also I really want Chelsea to make a track with Anna von Hausswolff, that'd be great
Why must everyone always assume music is trying to make a political statement? The lyrics to this song are pretty vague. If I had to interpret them, I'd say they're just talking about a sort of emptiness that you can never seem to fix, an emptiness which prevents you from connecting with others. It's ultimately a song about isolation, imo.

_16 Psyche_ is also the iron core of a protoplanet that floats around our solar system as a very large asteroid.
