I shot 802 out of the box with the Gem in the Washington State Open Championship a couple of weeks ago. By far the best ball I have ever owned.
I've seen a lot of people buy that ball here in Hawaii and watch them get frustrated because they play it down 10 and can't get it in the pocket, they try and throw it harder and it hooks even more they flatten the wrist and the ball stands up on them and is flat. I mean these guys are good for overall ball sales cause they will buy anything new but they really need to watch more ball videos like this to understand what the ball is kind of designed for. Then again, i usually pickup some cheap barely used balls so..... its not that bad, i guess?, LOL
I learned this the hard way by leaving five pins and 5-7s.
I love my gem. id say depends on a bunch of factors like ball speed. i will agree that the gem is so early that it will leave 10s here and there because the lack of energy it has off the back of the pattern
If you’re not speed dominant, playing up 10 doesn’t really make sense to me
I polished mine up after I threw it three or four frames, and I’ve been super happy with it ever since.
Accurate, this was my friend when he & I bowled the recent tournament there 2 weeks ago
I’ve only owned 2 strike balls so far ( I’ve only been bowling in general since November ) but I’ve used a hyped Pearl and now I have the gem, within a week of buying the gem and getting used to it I’m averaging 207 with my high score being 266.
Also my PR as well. All strikes except for an 8/1 open frame on seventh frame.
I got a Gem to use when I can't get my Zen to work, I don't use it often, but it's nice to know that I have something in my bag that will work no matter what they do to the lanes. It is kind of ugly going down the lane normally, but I accidentally got stuck bowling during Cosmic bowling and it looked like a black light poster going down the lane, really cool.
I got the Gem 3 weeks ago I absolutely love it. I also have the proton that's drilled to go little longer where my Gem snaps early for those oily lanes but those are my go to balls.

As the only lefty in my league I can throw the gem for two to three games most weeks. My center uses a heavy oil pattern for league and nothing else even attempts to hook until late game 2 for me. With the gem I no longer see my scores jump from 180 in the first two to 220 in the last two. But I don't see anyone else in my center throwing it anymore, just my corner case.
Haven't quite gotten to the gem yet. But I've been working with an old physix and now the nova and I've had good success being a 2 hander. I think the gem is soon to come. I hope you win more tournaments with these! Great video vitamin DTang!

Nice to see this review on my house lanes. Glad I passed the Gem up as I don't think it would work well for my game. 2 handed lower speed, so I don't think it would get far enough down the lane. Holding out for a Zen Soul!
I’m a two hander lower speed myself, and I picked up a gem to try out and I absolutely hate it in comparison to my rubicon uc2. I do need more practice with it but so far I’m not impressed and thinking about selling it even though I just bought it! On top of that two of my teammates got a new ball the same time as I did and are bowling great with them!😅😅😅
Just got mine Saturday; the same day I was bowling against 40 plus JPBA bowlers that showed up at the Salad Bowl Cup here in Okinawa. Very strong ball! Decided to stick with the Dark Code.
Took it to my house, Enagic Mihama, today and this ball really moves. Fresh 42” foot pattern. That said I tried to go as far left and as far right. Loves high revs, and it really shines going across. Straight rolls not it’s strong suit. Did pick up a few 10 pins but it’s hard to roll it flat. It stays in the bag
So the ultimate question is....NOVA or GEM to replace the original lock??

Darren, do you have an original Defiant stashed somewhere to compare to the Gem? That would be a fun comparison to see haha. That was the first Roto ball I ever owned and I wish I could still throw it, but mine cracked 😞
I have this ball. And i absolutely love it. Probably the best ball I've ever had. Just love the way it hooks and drives through the pins. I dont throw very hard and dont throw alot of revs. So it works well
I use the Gem as my first ball on the fresh when the conditions are right it’s like a freight train, my favorite ball in my bag, if I need something to go down lane and break later my rst 2 I drilled to get down further

I have a chance to get this ball this weekend at a Storm pro session. My speed is between 16 and 17, and my rotation is low-mid, so it could be a good fit. Other options are Infinite PhysiX, Cosmos, Zen Soul, Helios and Rubicon UC3. Looking forward to the weekend. Thank you for your simple explanations of things like weak vs. strong...always helpful.

I call it the Play-Doh ball. the colors is pretty much the same colors Play-Doh uses for their products.
What type of bowler would get a lot of use from this ball during league. As someone who has low revs and speed and gets uncomfortable if I have to moves left of 25 too early in the block if this would force me too quickly out of my comfort zone.
The good news is the only way to get used to being outside of your comfort zone is to be forced to play outside of your comfort zone. That's a win win!
A ball this strong may force you outside of your comfort zone sometimes but that’s not a bad thing. Being challenged outside of your normal zone will help you improve a bunch in the long run!

Ive just started bowling and wanted to know a good entry ball for me i usually have a early break with basic balls so im looking for something with a little bit of a later break
Brunswick rhino or storm tropical surge are pretty weak entry balls so they might be what your looking for

Did you keep the Nova's Surface out of box and Polish it? I bought it about a month ago Struggled with it over hooking anywhere outside of 10, But once I hit 15 it seems to be flat. I'm wondering if policing it will help.
I got a gem my 2 nd and 3rd highest scores ever 252 week later 245 I start at 21 st board usually end at 31st board
I got me a proton at the beginning of the year, meaning beginning of the bowling season in September 2021. And it burns up too fast on me. Would the gem do the same seeing it’s a asymm ball? Or is the gem better? And yes my proton probably is already getting to the dead stage seeing the asyms have the biggest weight blocks and absorb the most oil
But if it matters I have a newer phase II and an old phase II I’ll still go to. I got the zen pearl, and I got an electrify solid. And a mix
It’s going to shape more than the proton even though it’s still so early
No this ball sucks. And the lanes I bowl on are dry and the ball doesn’t hook. The only ppl I know do good with this ball is ones with low rev and arm speed.
@@lt8473 what you are experiencing is the ball burning up. Now i did say its less likely to do that than the proton, but that does not mean it’s immune to doing so. This ball NEEDS oils, because it is SO early. So on your specific house shot, and on conditions where there is less volume, the Gem is susceptible to do that. That doesn’t mean the ball is bad, it’s just bad on those conditions. Every ball is situational, and no ball will be great in every pattern at every house at all times. The conditions play a huge part in ball motion. Secondly, the lower rev players are finding more success because the core is helping them create angle, while higher rev players don’t need as much help from such a strong core and cover combination. The higher rev players aren’t experiencing hook on your pattern because the ball losing energy too fast.
@@lt8473 for the reasons I’ve talked about so far, this ball looks beautiful on sport shots, where there is much more oil on the outside parts of the lane in comparison to a house shot, making it far less likely to see the ball burn up. Don’t judge a ball because you’ve seen it on one condition, like i said, every ball cant look great all the time, not even on the same condition in league every week, hence changing balls and moving. I advise you to try it at houses where there is more oil, or to get out to a short shot practice or tournament
Asymm has nothing to do with burning up oil that's all in the coverstock. Going to a gem with a much stronger cover will burn up oil much faster.

"You guys hate urethane in league" I laughed super hard at this. I ordered a UC2 at my local pro shop and the PSO accidentally ordered a UC3. He reordered the UC2 and let me take the UC3 to play with.(My PSO is awesome and his customer service is 2nd to none. He made a mistake, it happens.) As an inexperienced, rev dominant, bowler who has never thrown urethane before today, I am pretty sure I would hate urethane in league

phaze 4 is symmetrical and has a very clean cover.. nova is a lot stronger and earlier.

Glad I'm not the only guy to misdrill a bowling ball.
I literally have a half dozen balls or more that are all drilled like dog shit! Not my fault. I've relied on 3 or 4 different Pro Shop Operators and they all could care less what opinions you give them or questions you have. They'll hear you out about a layout and then turn around and give you some standardized cookie cutter layout that'll have you feeling like you're borrowing a ball from someone else. It's quite pathetic honestly. I've wasted thousands of dollars on different bowling balls all to have the PSO's completely fuck me over since they don't give a shit about their customers. They only give a shit about people with 230+ averages because they know they're the only ones that'll call them out on their bullshit and lack of integrity. Anyone else that tries to call them out they'll just treat you like you don't know a damn thing about bowling.

I don’t think this ball will be around for very long. It just seems too strong for peoples liking. That’s just IMO
There's a lot of people out there who will like this ball because they aren't high revs. I can personally throw the Dark Code on a burned up house shot and never get left of 20. lol
The ball it’s that good. It hits way to soft. And if you have any kind of revs or arm speed you will not strike often.

@@lt8473 a good bowler can adjust their speed and revs if the situation calls for it. I bet if you worked on changing those 2 things up instead of always having to throw the same way you would improve your game and have the ability to use other balls like the Gem. Just a thought.

I think you just drilled it wrong or maybe just doesn’t work with your style. For me this ball is crushing the pins drilled mine #3 on the storm 2LS chart.
I am an older bowler and love to see this evaluation of new equipment. Unfortunately this review does not apply to me. Where you young people play your shot is nowhere where I play. I cannot get my ball to hook into the pocket like yours. I am not gong to spend $190 + and be disappointed with the results especially. When the ball is discontinued and that has happened to me more often than not. From now on I will not watch a ball review until it has been played or on the market at least 3 years. You guys are wasting my time with these reviews of ball that you get free!

If you're looking for balls that would work best for your older age and assuming (slower speed and lower rev rate) you should just stick to Urethane balls. I bowl in a competitive league and most the men in my league are 50+ years of age and the majority of them throw urethane balls. Some throw entry level reactive resin but none of them really throw high performance balls because their speed is too slow.
