    ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
    ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

May be it matches. May be not. How does it matter? Ur holy book takes vedanta as shirk and ppl advocating these as kafirs and if a kafir falls unwell, u r instructed to not pray to ur Allah for his well being. Sufism is born from that book. It cannot deviate much even if sufi practicioners realize the truth of vedanta on their personal level. Hence we Hindus now do not care about ur belief system and request u to not even listen to our videos. We do not want or desire any unification with you. Be separate and don't get into our way of life

    • @religionofpeace782

Sorry to say but Sufism has nothing to do with vedanta or Bharatiya adhyatmik darshan. The spirituality that is discussed in sanatana Dharma is way deeper and logical than irrational, self obsessed,.self proclaiming Semitic faiths or belief systems. We aren't believers like the abrahamics. We are seekers. We don't follow a prescription. We search for the truth by travelling the spiritual path on our own through self discovery.

My sincere gratitude to Swami Prabhavananda earlier and now Swami Sarvapriyananda, who I consider my Gurus. I have a question: To me, memory is a very important constituent to establish continuity of existence. If the subtle body continues to have the Samskaras but cannot remember its past, the entire logic of karma is defeated. Imagine a criminal being arrested by the police, who then proceed to delete all his memory. What impact will reward or punishment have on such a person? Will there be any sense of justice that the criminal perceives? Learned friends, please share your thoughts on this.

Interesting, in a way this is tied to faith. The events in my life were created by karma in a past life, and though I don’t know what my past life was, perhaps there’s a way to engage it through working with a plant teacher like Iboga, but I don’t know what my past life was I just know it created the karma in my current life. In that way I don’t need to have The continuity, I just need to understand that my current existence, the events in my current existence or karma, and I have the choice to engage in that karma or use my awareness to exist outside that karma.

    • @nityanityaViveka
      @nityanityaViveka 2 года назад +3

I posted a similar question to see if there is another explanation here. But, based on my contemplation on this, I have come to maintain the belief that karma cannot be associated with sukshma sharira.
As you have posited from your question, science shows us that we take actions based on our neurological set-up, hormones, neurotransmitters, electro-chemical impulses, etc.
If you lobotomize people, give them drugs etc. etc., you can completely change one's personality, tendencies, memory and all the rest of what one would commonly understand as being a facet of their "jiva-atman".
Therefore, actions are at the command of neurons, the sthoola sharira (the body).
For all intents and purposes, neurons are governed by the law of conservation of energy.
If the sukshma sharira did something to impact the function of neurons, it would violate the theory of conservation of energy.
If we concede correctness to the theory of conservation of energy, then actions are necessarily done by the sthoola sharira and the sukshma sharira is a non-doer.
Then karma (if such a thing exists) must be relative to the sthoola sharira and not the sukshma sharira (which is nishkriya).
Therefore there cannot be rebirth of the sukshma sharira based on karma, because it is nishkriya.
This conclusion means no Karma, no punarjanam, and will force Advaitins to either reinterpret Karma without the need of sukshma sharira, or discard it altogether.
If we chose the former, to reinterpret Karma, we can perhaps equate it with the causal framework of the universe. To do so we would need to define it to be equivalent to gravity/electromagnetism/strong or weak nuclear force etc., which guides the invisible hand of determinism. Perhaps something like this was the original idea of Karma in Purva Mimamsa, but I would need an expert to confirm that.
If there is a more elaborate explanation of jiva-atman which can reconcile conservation of energy, I am yet to come across it.
I suppose that this is could be the reason why the Vedic Samhitas are quite reticent about reincarnation, and this idea shows up prominently in late Vedic texts.
The induction of Dharma/Karma into the Vedic canon was motivated by an urge to add some sort of moral justice into the fabric of the universe.
Unfortunately our exploration of science has not validated this.
Nevertheless, we shouldn't despair and say that just because morality (Dharma) and moral justice (Punya/Paapa/Karma) is likely not divine (and is merely a human illusory creation) that doesn't mean that it is useless, or completely invalid.
The correctness of morality/Dharma can be explored and established quite well in the confines of vyavaharika - and our focus in our waking life should be on that.

Our Sanskaras themselves biggest evidence of our karmas. If you have good sanskaar means u have good karma and vice versa u will be rewarded/punished on the basis of that. Given the births a human being takes its not possible to store all those memories in our physical mind so it's squeezed in the form of sanskaar.

The brain only a part of ur body and ur thoughts and emotions just trigger some part of ur brain and that is traceable medically but any of the feeling and thoughts that are generated is subjective and different for all and that is ur personality that generates such kind of thoughts and emotions of urs and that is not traceable ...that personality is manifested as subtle body that experience and that is the driver of ur thought and the brain signals so when the body and brain dies the subtle body which is also a manifestation of pure consciousness doesn't go away only the manifestation of ur body and brain the outmost machinery stops ....So the subtle body continues with its samskara to another body and mind ( brain) bound by the law of karma subtle body loose it's existence only when any person is identified with pure existence consciousness and by doing nishkam karma broke through the chains of karma..then there will be no rebirth no subtle body neither it will take any body and mind form......
It is the actual idea here ☺️hope u will consider this perspective

So the subtle body is not physical. But then how does it travel from place to place or body to body. Only physical things (cycle, chair, etc.) can travel in other physical things (like air), and only physical things (food, air) can enter other physical things (body). How can something non-physical even travel? How can it enter something physical?

It feels very freeing after death. Now, of course, this is also dependent upon the beliefs you're still carrying with you after you pass on. It may take some time before you can let go your limiting human beliefs. This is necessary in order to move on and experience your new life. You still function, actually much much better than you did while in your physical body. You have much more freedom when not in the physical body. The only thing that will limit you, again, will be your beliefs. There is always help and guidance for those who experience confusion upon their death. This also will depend upon the rigidity of your beliefs. If you have strong, rigid beliefs, it will be a bit harder for another to help you get thru the transition stage. We all go through a transition stage after we die. This, again, is to help removed our limiting human beliefs.

Still doesn't explain HOW the transference of information occurs after death and where and what form is it stored in the interim. All that is affirmed here is that it occurs, and I have no doubt that it does from all the studies of re-incarnation. But HOW? is the burning question for me.

    • @SpiritualReform
      @SpiritualReform 3 года назад

You as a soul or the subtle body contain all information, all knowledge, all wisdom there is. When you are born on this physical plane, you choose what information and how much information to carry with you in this lifetime. It's purposeful - all for the sake of the experience itself. There is much much more to this, including the idea of reincarnation which is another belief system, when in truth all your lives are occurring simultaneously within different timeframes that exist parallel _(energywise)_ to each other. While some ppl can tap in their so called "past" lives, others can also tap in their "future" lives that are taking place in those other timeframes. I've been able to chat with one of my future self _(a time machine technician)_ in one of my future lives which is occurring NOW. A child who remembers its past life is doing nothing more than *tapping* in the other life which it sees as its past whether or not the other life has expired. We do the same in our dreams.

    • @Ashish-ss5nt
      @Ashish-ss5nt 3 года назад

Exactly my question because at present we have life that's why even in anesthia or during sleep we can see or experience anything, but when life force has gone it has gone, and even if there is rebirth happening then we will anyways remember nothing about it in next life, and what if human beings stop producing or even animals, then someone will say that there is also life on other planets, and if there is rebirth then there must be past life of the Soul that we can say, also in gita it is written that at the time of death whatever we will see or witness we will take form of that in the next birth. Then I think if we see or experience nothing at the time of death, we are freed from the cycle of birth and death. That is I think the Soul.

So, who feels sadness and happiness is the subtle body as there is NO INDIVIDUAL SOUL and The Bramhan is not touched by the dualities of Maya. And...the subtle body is Not 'Me'...then, 'I' m not taking any re-birth, right? then why should I be worried about doing 'good karma' or 'bad karma'? or is there anything called 'good' & 'bad' karma as its also in the fold of duality of Maya? then how does good karma lead to liberation and not the bad karma? actually there is no liberation as the real 'I' is not in bondage at all!

perfect question... good to see atleast some questons which are good... my 2 cents about this is not only the heart but also your memory is functional otherwise how can you dream based on your memory. For example if previous day you saw a strange crow, today you dream something related to that crow - which means your dream is using memory - so your brain cells are functional. And I think these functional brain cells give the idea of self in dream or under influence of pain killer. The idea of 'I' - the ego , the samskaras (tendencies), the beliefs - etc are purely based out of information that has gathered in memory which is the brain and also muscle memory. the muscle memory allows you to swim for example... with death both this brain and muscle memory is gone, and so the idea of self, beliefs etch is also gone. This whole concept of this information is encapsuled in sukshma sarira which travels to next body has no explanation or logic that is worthy of believing... atleast I haven't found.

All the content of mind exists in the physical brain. Memory lost is one of those example. When we hit a person on his head or if he has some kind of accident by which his brain doesn't function normally then he/she is no longer the same person. It is well established now that all the memories, impressions, experience, personalities are there in the brain. And when the body dies then the brain is also dead which contains all your beleifs, dogmas, memories, knowledge, experience, personalities and everything. So the only residue is the dead material.

I want to share my thoughts on this. Unaffected/unattached yes if you have achieved the liberation (i.e. understood and experienced before our body dies that the “I am” consciousness within us and the entire universe is one and the same). If this is not understood, it is easy for the subtle body to fall in the trap of the fragments leading to different ends and not whole. This is one reason I honestly honor nondual Vedanta. Non dualities has to be achieved emotionally and intellectually. Whatever state (awake, dream or deep sleep) we are in, the nondual version of us will be convinced then that we can wake up, switch gears or sit back and relax. Upanishads talk about these stuff. We are asking these questions again 5000 years later 😂

If you mean "when and where will her subtle body be reincarnated", such a thing cannot be predicted easily, unfortunately.
Even the Dalai Lama, who has been reincarnated 13 times, is only located due to monks of their order interpreting signs and visions, which lead them to a particular area. Then the specific child must be found, and display more signs to indicate their past life.
When they interpreted signs and visions to find the 14th Dalai Lama the monks were incognito so that parents/householders of the village wouldn't be able to manipulate events. No one knew who they were or what they were there for, and even though the monks were disguised as lost travellers seeking shelter, the boy went and sat in the lap of the leading lama, identified him as "Sera Lama", reached into the lamas robes and took out the rosary and claimed it was his - those beads did indeed belong to the 13th Dalai Lama. He also claimed ownership of a ritual drum and walking cane which belonged to the 13th Dalai Lama.
While it may not be possible to locate your daughters reincarnation without spiritual assistance, it is very possible that some memories will carry over and they could recall aspects of the previous life, and remember among other things, the love you have for her.

Swamiji, I am discontent with triple sharira concept in Vedanta.
The phsyical body is obvious, and to some extent inescapable from our experience.
Atman is also in some sense believable, because it is the underlying reality to all experience. So far so good.
But the idea of Sukshma Sharira is problematic when confronted with medical science. Tendencies, attitudes, emotions, personality, memories, and everything else that happens in our mental experience has been theorized and many times explained by the workings of the brain (the pysical body), via neuroscience.
Modern AI like GPT-3 can also show how personalities can emerge from a digital framework.
If the mind faculty is emergent from the physical body, then the Sukshma Sharira becomes just as nirguna as Brahman. Moreover, the sukshma sharira also becomes nishkriya. Let us see how.
If we accept that all actions are motivated by the mind, and that the mind is caused by the physical body then the Sukshma Sharira is nishkriya.
If the Sukshma Sharira is nishkriya, how can we associate karma to it, a non-doer?
If there is no karma for the Sukshma Sharira, there cannot be rebirth.
Another big problem is the mechanism by which Sukshma Sharira does anything. It must do something, in order to accrue karma, but how is this so? It can only do so by motivating the physical body. However, science has never found an instance that contradicts conservation of energy which relates motion and potential energies from various fields. The movement of atoms, particles and everything else is determined almost completely by the electromagnetic fields in our bodies (gravity is not that relevant on these scales). By what mechanism does the Sukshma Sharira "move" or change state of anything in our body? By doing so it would violate conservation of energy, because something would move without an associated reduction in potential energy somewhere to cause its movement. If true (science is pretty certain about this), how can the Sukshma Sharira do anything, and accrue Karma?
If science is correct in this, it seems like a huge problem for Advaita Vedanta, and a reason to eliminate Sukshma Sharira along with karma/rebirth from the theology, no?

Your personality as a human being is not the same as you are in your subtle body. You come here and choose to experience from limitation, with certain faults _(ego),_ and so on. Bhavesh Makvana hello, I am sorry this is not yet an interactive session yet and I bet you will not hear back from Swamiji. For your question-I have some thoughts. The nondual self the “I am” consciousness is one and the same- it is within all and outside of all. When one causes harm to others or if one is bound to selfish nature of their lower self, they have the eternal witness within them silently witnessing everything. The mind is the organ of thoughts, conditioned with our previous karma and physical body, the untrained mind wanders like wild horses with pride and ego- just too far out from the eternal subtle silent self. Thus, going into the path other than this subtle eternal self is re-lived, recreated, reincarnated. Karma is the experience re-lived by one when nondual self is not realized. It’s a fascinating equation, sort of like matrix. Our karma if done in alignment with universal nondual self, we become the conscious rider of this chariot they call it our physical body and the physical universe.

There are conditions that we choose to experience from, however. Gravity, and physical limitation are one of them for example.

Parbrahm Lord Krishna administers the law of karma. I'm not sure what you mean by violating the law of karma as there is no such thing. Every karma incurs a reaction when done with attachment to fruit. When you serve humanity, the direct tangible reaction is that the person gets helped. The intangible reactions depend on your personal motives behind it, if any.

Can someone answer my question. Why are we born on earth.
    What's the purpose.
    Why God sent us here?

You sent yourself here. In order to learn a certain thing. It is that exact thing that seems to be an obstacle for an happy life. Try to manifest something and if something doesn’t work out first, that’s what you came here for. Earth is a very special place. Have fun

What else can you do if you're not experiencing? You generated this experience and reality so to have an experience. This experience, among an infinite number of other experiences you are continually generating, is so to enable yourself as god or consciousness to experience your own self as something else different from that which you are already in consciousness. These experiences do not change you as you are in your divine nature, however. Once you're done with this one life, for example, you go back to your own self as the divine creator that you are. From there you choose again what else to experience. It's all up to you. However, you never stay still - nothing does. You're continually generating different experiences for yourself. That is the nature of consciousness. Consciousness is an action in itself.

We are born so that we can develop love, compassion, forgiveness, non violence etc qualities, if in one birth you only are following non-violence but if u don't have other qualities like love, compassion etc than u have to take rebirth, unless and until u don't have all the qualities u will be born again and again and also unconditional love, un attachment etc,.
Easy way is to love, serve all human beings, animals, bird, plants etc creatures, feed everyone and chant the name of God like ram, krishna etc. Self realisation of ur self is also important task.

@@sumanaghosal5072 nope..I have read somewhere physical, subtle and casual are just covering sheaths of ataman and illuminated by the light of the soul.. Actually in ancient literatures this body classification expressed in different terminologies..Truth can be revealed when we go deep down with the help of enlightened guru who can make us understand the true meaning...Till then reading and listening from authentic sources help but authentic resources are rare and destroyed in past
