I get hot when I straighten my hair too, so to help prevent that as much I make sure I have a bottle of H20 in front of me and the fan on high. Wearing a tank top and shorts while straightening helps too, even in the Winter. Actually, I just realized that you already are doing most of what I just suggested, so just add the fan.

my hair does the exact same so i put a thermal protectant in and just blow dry the roots on low heat and let the rest air dry (:
