Very nice conversation Pav. Would love to see more of these style of videos.
Thanks!
Maybe more in the future
Kai is wise. Kai is also right in his prediction I think.
Kai is very wise
Great video Pav, nice to see you doing this type of video (you do it well)!!
thanks!
I have a small youtube channel about urban cycling. Most of my early content were shot in a good old Lumix GH4 and god, I love that camera. I don't like to shoot with GoPros and iPhones, I love a good lens and maybe some bokeh. I just need a small and light portable camera capable of shooting beautiful video images, with good stabilization. This camera seems to be a nice product that stands somewhere in between a point&shoot and a proper full body camera. This S9 sounds perfect for me.
it could be a right camera for you and your needs
Great conversation guys!
Thanks Shane!
Very unexpected but nice to see Kai! 😁
he is a LEGEND!
I will never understand why any camera manufacturer thinks cameras don’t need a grip.
it looks prettier without it
How many FF cameras in this price Range have Open Gate and 4k60. How many yTubers Pro or Otherwise make review Videos longer then 15 minutes. How many folks buying Cameras buy cameras First on Style as opposed to anything else. Many of the limitations some are harping on are actually the Limitations of the person buying the Gear and not the GEAR itself. Love the way you guys set up this presentation. I prefer this style of doing things.
I couldn't agree more. This camera is not bad at all if used right.
Thank you for watching
No VF - dont care, better for my right eye
No grip - I'll mount it anyways, gimbal, tripod
No mech shutter - perfect for music studios
Record limit - I use external anyways
No hotshoe - I dont use flash
Its small, ff, has IBIS, LUTs, anamorphic, flip out screen... its perfect.
watching this make me know that how Kai's videos is not just him but also how Lok edits the videos
for sure
Losing the Evf, MS, HS not great, but lack of Weather Sealing for god sake WHY !
good question
Kai goes from skeptic to it’s an ok camera. Pav is in Pannys payroll. What lenses would be used with this camera? There are no small lenses to go with this camera except the ridiculous manual focus f8. I’ll buy it in a month or two when it is 800.
Unfortunately I am not their payroll.
It would make sense for more small lenses for it to come out in the future
The part that makes the least sense about this camera is the price - all the compromises make sense if it was significantly cheaper than the S5ii, but in my country this S9 is going to retail for a higher price than S5ii (S9 kit $2999, s5ii kit $2799, currently $2599) but is worse in every way except body size..keeping in mind that lenses will still be large anyway. If it had instead been $1799ish or less then at least i could see it as a companion to the s5ii instead of a competitor.
Fuji did the same with the X-T50 and X-T5. The X-T50 is only $200/£200 MSRP than the X-T5 let alone that because the X-T5 has been in the market for so long you can easily have it for the MSRP of the X-T50 if not less. Same happened with the X-T5 and X-H2 at launch despite the clearly better specs of the X-H2 their prices were very close to each other. The logical opinion from a feature standpoint is to get the X-H2 or X-T5 not the X-T50. But what if you actually want a smaller camera? What if that is the selling point? Same with the S9 it is a very different product to the S5 II despite it's technical similarities there are enough of differentiations (small size, easily accessible LUTs, app integration) that for all intends it is a different product and should be seen as such. Is it worth 1500 regardless of the price/existence of the S5II.
Pav = fake RUclipsr
Kai: absolute legend and honest
I'm 100% fake. It's not even me on my videos. All Chat GPT and Ai
Thanks for stopping by. Love you
@@PavSZ 😂
Wonderful video, Watching all the reviews, I feel that the majority of reviewers want to like the S9, but realize there are compromises, that people either will be ok with or not. Which tells me the camera is going to have a hard time finding who would fully enjoy it. The new Leica D-lux 8 for $1,595 usd, seems better polished for the photographers. The idea of a small portable full frame camera is appealing, but when there are very few compact lens, it kills the portability. the X100 5 and 8 are pocket cameras and have EVFs
Not sure whether you’ve read online, but the same sort of people online have been trashing the D Lux 8, saying that it’s outdated, sensor is rubbish, lens is old, it’s too expensive, no grip, Leica money grabbing etc.
I absolutely adore the Lx100ii and Dlux7. Just a replacement of any sort is good news. If they have updated the viewfinder, and improved the user experience, then it’s definitely an upgrade I would consider.
Leica is all about the user handling and ownership experience, so I expect it will be a dream to use. And no one will criticise your shared photos about how low resolution they are.
The apathy/ meh is palpable 😂
WHATS missing a lot but for a start you know its the EVF
maybe but a lot of people use their phones for everything and they do not miss a view finder. It's not for everyone for sure
This camera looks amazing, but it's so hopelessly flawed in so many ways. You hear this camera isn't for me a lot, but for the right prices, this changes everything.
for sure, lower price would make it more desirable
Add me to those people, it isnt for you. Dont force it. If you want it to be cheaper, then they'll remove IBIS, or use a smaller battery, much fewer buttons, cropped 4k, no LUTs, APSC, and then you'll be more frustrated.
I think where they missed the mark on the S9 is not releasing the pancake 18-40 with it. But rather than bundling it with the 20-60. If they're coming out with this small of a camera I hope they come out with smaller lenses as well.
yes
i think out of all the issues people complain about with this camera, this is the one that stands. The selling point of the camera is the LUTs and the size. You take 50% of it's selling points by not having any decent pancake lesnes. For me the Sigma contemporary primes pair well (there was a demo in london with the 45mm f2.8 which is how I am planning on setting it up). The 24 3.5F is also very compact. So you do have options but Panasonic should definitely have had a couple of lenses at launch.
It's a really odd camera to me, but I don't think the fundamental idea is bad. The removal of the mechanical shutter gave them quite a lot of photo problems to resolve, like software fixes for LED lights banding, and I think they went too far and inadvertently neutered the video specs too, like removal of the headphone jack, short recording limits, and no hotshoe for the XLR mic adapter (which helps a lot with the audio electrical interference issue caused by certain recording formats on the S5II, but as I haven't tested the S9 yet I don't know if that issue has been inherited or not).
I feel like if the S9 was cheaper it would be getting less flack. But for the price, it feels a bit expensive compared to the S5II or options from other brands. And that pancake lens is hilariously daft 😆
Compromised camera I agree with Kai 👍
yes
I agree with Kai and Pav. Kai said the camera does not having a shoe for flash but said afterwards he does not use a flash. This is the problem with this camera. People will dismiss it without checking what the need or if the use it. One reviewer said it allready, do you need a flash to make a 15 minutes video for TikTok? This is the audience Panasonic is targetting this camera. As Tony Northrup said, her 15 years old daughter does not use a EVF. All this youngster never used a dedicated camera hence they does not miss the viewvinder. The biggest problem of this camera is not the camera itself but the current audience of photographers born in a different era and the TikTok generation of the future. No ones talk how fast you can trasnfer your video and photo to your smartphone. This is the target audience.
Totally agree!
That’s because people only are interested in stats instead of experiencing the camera. We want every camera to be a step up instead of being different, and for another audience. People gonna trow in cons that really doesn’t make sense on a camera like the s9. Like I stated in my reaction on the latest upload from Gerald undone: do camera companies needs to be afraid of the power influencers have those days, because they really cause damage.
Well said. Might not work for me, but not the target market. Surprised however by how many folks were negative about specs initially, but found the camera enjoyable to use! Personally I was hoping Pan would put this effort into a small MFT, but have largely given up that hope.
“Do you need a flash to make a 15 min video for TikTok?” No. Do you need a full frame camera for that? Also no. And if you’re going to put an F8 lens manual focus lens on it, you’re probably better off with a m43 with a brightish pancake prime
Panasonic sells an xlr adapter, works great for talking head…………. If they really wanted to sell to TikTokers and reelers… 1/4 20 on the side.
If they priced this at $999 USD I would have snatched it. I can get a used S5II for cheaper. Bad pricing strategy.
S5ii looks ugly as hell. I am genz and i think this s9 looks sexy and have all feature i need. Really looking to carry this around, looks like leica.
it a full frame point and shot
point and shoot with exchangeable lens mount, pre-burst shooting, time laps, 6k open gate video, V-Log and more
@@PavSZ I guess if they class it as pro comsumer point and shot .. maybe the expectations will not be that high . 😅 Cause the dail and button are very Pana point and shot style. :)
Is the stabilization just as good as the S5
same as S5II
That is definitely one of its strong points
If I was in the market for a new camera I would say the Sony A7R 5 or the A1 would be better than this. OK more expensive but worth it.
Time Will tell, i see a Classic. A expensive one. 😅
i mean with Kai's channel size is there the slightest chance that it won't be a succesful video even if it comes a week or even a month after the embargo? I don't want to name channels but very large tech youtubers lately have been avoiding first day reviews even for high interest items like mobile phones. I have preordered it but I would still watch someone I trust after they had a proper chance to use it.
I like Panasonic but I generally see the S9 as a failure. Doesn't quite cut it for "content creators", and the camera is too barebones for even stills. It's mindboggling they didn't launch with any small lens (with AF). The 26mm F8 is a joke.
There is still hope they will quickly recover with a mark II.
Having the camera no photography skills are required, only an umbrella, right? :)
and wellies
I feel like this is missing the last 5% to be a great offering. For the things you are missing, it is too expensive. If it was 15% cheaper, yeah, please. Like this, meh, you look more at the cons. Let’s see what the street market prices will be.
The whole camera is a complication. No mechanical shutter, time limit. How is that appealing to a beginner or pro? Do people all of the sudden like banding or rolling shutter or the lack of ability to record for as long as they'd like?
More examples of people trying to justify a flawed camera. It does not need a hot shoe because I don't use flash! Well, many people DO use flash and would need a hot shoe. The same goes for the EVF, or lack of. And as for the short recording times. I still maintain this is being praised by all those 'influencers' who got the free trip to Japan.
I think what Kai meant about the lack of hot shoe and the way it looks being cold shoe, that it makes the camera look cheap and like a toy, not that he needed to use flash on it. If anyone needs to use flash, this camera simply is not for them.
The lack of EVF and short recording times won't bother a lot of people. It is NOT a camera for everyone. I personally like it and it is going to be my cam of choice when travelling and I travel a lot.
it takes a lot of time and effort to create video content. I hardly see it as a free trip to Japan when I spend days/weeks working to create content about it. However me, or anybody else was not asked to say anything specific about it.
Not every camera is meant for every person. A camera isn’t flawed because it doesn’t fit in your needs. That’s the problem nowadays. Because it doesn’t have it all it’s flawed. I guess we all should drive Rolls Royce’s
No mechanical shutter, no EVF, limited recording, no hot shoe. Please stop with the coping @@Valerossi0
I think you’re overstating the importance of a free trip. It’s a tiring, short, long haul trip across the other side of the world with very little down time. We go on the trip and cover the product or we don’t cover the product.
The S9 being released doesn’t take away the flashes from other cameras lol why are some people so salty about this camera? If it’s not for you, it’s not for you … no problem
Not all creators are hipsters wanting to talk about camera gear, there are 100s of categories of different content, most of them don’t care for the brand, the Fuji X100, is a fixed 35mm lens, that would only work for creator wanting to talk about the camera itself. The Sony are popular because are the most “reviewed” (with good reason). The whole reason all of you guys are in Japan is because lumix what’s exposure for their cameras to make them more popular when a random (not a camera enthusiast) customer starts searching for a camera
it's called marketing.
I was hard to convince about it but I really like it for what it is now
@@PavSZ yes, people need to come into it with understanding that is main reason is to be compact, affordable and fun… everything else is extra! I will take its compromises because to me in a LUMIX IBIS is a must, and the S9 has the best of any camera, along with the S5II(x). Love that they kept all the amazing videos features. Recording limit will be a non-issue.
I do professional video projects and personal travel/vlog content. I search my SSD and out of 2000+ .MOV files only 1 is over 15 minutes.
@@9adriano21 same. I only record longer my youtube talking videos but all my professional work is short clips. This camera is perfect for gimbal b-roll for me
I predict that 3-6 months from now we're going to see a lot of, "I Was So Wrong About the S9", type videos. I think the shade thrown at the S9 is over blown and stupid. It's sad how people just immediately jump on the bandwagon of their favorite content creator and just parrot whatever they say. I would love to get the S9 and show how capable it really is. See you in a few months.
I agree!
I'm working on my next 3 videos and I'm filming all my b-roll with S9 as it is more convenient.
I think it is a great camera after 2 weeks of using it every day
I hope for Panasonic's case you're right but I think it will be the opposite and we'll start seeing them all hit eBay.
Let’s not 😂
I'm glad that you left your comment. Every one helps. Thanks
@@PavSZ just playing with you. I really do dig your videos and your photography is one of my favorite on RUclips. Cool style.
As I see it, the issue with this camera and why it's getting so much hate is 1. The price is way too high for the target market (tik tok or content creators), 2. Its overly complicated for their target market, 3. If the target market was tik tok, instagram content creators, they brought in the entirely WRONG crowd to review this camera. You don't bring professional you tube camera reviewers in to review a stripped down content creator camera. Bring in your target market to review the camera and teach them how to use it. Just seems like a total disconnect. The group they brought in should be reviewing the S1H II.
And if you don't need a flash to shoot a tik tok video, then don't try to market the camera as a great photography camera. Every review shows multiple PHOTOGRAPHS, and most of those were shot during high noon daylight. All the evening photos look low quality, where a flash would have helped.
S9 is not for me...actually kind of a door stop. No weather sealing...No Hot shoe...15 min video before overheat..Only electronic shutter....Forcing Luts of regular still Photo folks. ( to many things missing or changed) I pick a Sony any day over this camera. And panasonic...What happened to M43 GX9 II GX10??.
it's not for everyone for sure but there are people who don't care about these things.
Also apart of the viewfinder it is the same camera as S5II, you don't have to use LUTs if you don't want to but that's the only function that makes it actually better than Fuji X100 in that regards. You have full control over the looks, create your own easily and import LUTs in.
Maybe we will see upgrades to GX series soon, who knows
This camera aint' for me and that's OK.
not for everyone but there are people who need and want exactly this, as is
@@PavSZ I know.
I think the main issue I have with this is seeing content creators who I loved for their honest reviews completely gloss over the glaring issues with the camera.
You say there are many use cases but can only mention TikTokers but for short form content they WILL just use their phones. The biggest on the platform all user their phones, K-pop idols all use their phones, the people who record for fun all use their phones etc.
TikTok is treading heavily towards low tech content creation using just your smartphone and maybe one key light.
Sure the record limit can be managed but if you’re travelling in a country in a warm/humid climate what happens then? Oh you wanted to record a once in a life time event but your camera overheated and now you have to wait for it to cool down and potentially miss the shot. Something a £1000 smartphone wouldn’t even struggle with these days.
I’m sad to see my favourite content creators shill an overwhelmingly flawed product
The imagine quality looks comparable or slightly worse imo than Fuji film. Has no where near the lens selection choices of Sony and many other small cameras don’t have the same ridiculous record limits.
It’s a very bad and ill informed decision to even consider this camera at the price. Even an iPhone can attach an external microphone
I haven't seen one review not being honest about this camera yet.
It has got a lot of uses like: b-roll filming, vlogging, gimbal, street photography, any kind of photography really and more. It's not for everyone but everyone has got a very strong opinion about it.
I have been filming short form content and b-roll with it in 6k for the last 2 weeks and I love the size of it as a second camera that I need to take out with me
It felt like Kai was trying to have an honest conversation raising real concerns and you were rushing him along telling him not to worry about the concerns. Didn't feel like you wanted the real conversation he was trying to have. 🤷🏻♂️
yes
The only reason this crippled camera is being discussed is because “influencers” were invited to an expense paid trip to Japan.
really?
I really like it and I'd discuss it without going to Japan. The thing is that the problem is really with the opinions and not the actual camera. Camera is totally usable for a lot of different applications
Can’t wait to get my hands on one. This is not aimed at boomer photogs 😬
it is a very capable camera for sure
@@PavSZ Very capable indeed. Open gate in a small body I’m in!
that gizzer is never happy with any camera any brand no matter what
sometimes he is
Cringe...
Yes!
I love Kai and I’ve been following him for years, but I can’t help but feel like he’s bullshitting. I mean, it seems rather clear in his body language that he thinks it’s a piece of shit but on the other hand, he’s a reviewer and gets invited on these vacations like anyone else and to be blacklisted is not exactly helpful to the channel.
but this camera os a joke. I keep hearing the term compromise being passed around like a ping-pong ball, but let’s call it what it is: cripple hammered.
I love that you think these are vacations.
I really like the camera for what it is ... for everything else I'll use my S5II and S5IIx
@@PavSZyou are not exactly there digging ditches. But watching this video, just seems like you are trying a little too hard to prop up a bad cripple hammered camera. The asking price vs tech vs other options make it bad.
I said in the video that I was still forming my opinions; I hadn’t had the camera long at that point. I don’t think I was glossing over things.
I’m not sure what your vacations are like, but if you think just because it takes place in another country = vacation, then I think you need to take a proper vacation.
@@PavSZThey are vacations, Panasonic spent almost $3000-$4000 on each RUclipsr to be there. I don't what your idea of a vacation is but alot of ppl would kill to go to Japan All expenses paid
@@CallMeRabbitzUSVI source? Bud have you ever travelled for work. Or are you just salty you don’t get to try out new cameras. I think people are just butthurt because this camera looks a bit different than other cameras in that price range. This camera isn’t for everyone … Kai and the other videos I watched are pretty clear about what’s not there: no shutter speed, no viewfinder, the recording limitations, potential overheating and the price compared to the s5ii … so why get mad at the people covering the release?
I hope one day we will meet again @Pav
maybe
