      The financial reward for advertising in its current state is incentive enough for them to engage in it, regardless of whether it's 5% or 95% bots otherwise they wouldn't do it.

      From Amazon to Google. Every consolidated advertising platform will make sure that they won't have a choice. If numbers go up and revenue doesn't dip, then no one will care. The best case scenario is that all this AI and algorithms eventually lead to a total collapse and we break up these horrible markets.

      It doesn't work like that sadly. If you have a system of bots advertising to other bots advertising still makes a profit even if not a single human sees the ad. These systems are all based on statistic, view time and "eyes on"
      Yes the company shilling it's product will perish without anyone buying said product but the company behind the ads will only profit and just get another company to shill for.

    Im 18 and I grew up constantly being on the internet and it’s so weird how lifeless it’s become now. Like not only are so many social media platforms infested with bots, but also it feels like people are always trying to sell you something “you’re not ugly you just have cortisol face, try this” “we’re moving our content to _ it’s only 20 bucks a month to watch it!” Etc while of course it’s always been like this I feel like it’s gotten increasingly worse recently.

      I'm a bit more than twice your age (hi, I'm old lol) and ws in that age group of kids who straddled the offline/online mark. i.e., most of my childhood was pre-widespread internet, and then most of my teen years were spent online. You're right that it seems way more lifeless now comparatively, but trust me, it wasn't always about people trying to sell you things. There were countless forums, personal sites, fansites, etc. that weren't trying to sell you anything, and it was *glorious.* Sure, you'd probably see a banner ad here or there, or the dreaded pop-ups, but unless you wandered onto the sketchy sites or deliberately sought out a business, you could largely avoid a lot of advertising. And subscription models weren't really a thing as far as I remember. I miss those days.

      @@amandas2639 hi!! And yes I totally agree. I remember when most online sites and forums weren’t riddled with ads or bots. I even remember old RUclips where videos weren’t slapped with ads or they weren’t trying to sell you some sketchy product. It’s just I brought this point up on another video, and the response was “you must not remember as seen on TV items” “there used to be QVC scam sites” “pop-up ads have been around forever” etc so that’s why I said that last part!!

I've been beginning to stop interacting with a lot of stuff outside of it as it's all just ads and influencer nonsense, even meme pages on Instagram that in my memory were always run by some dude in highschool are now all mass-posting reposted and stolen content with stupid ai captions to farm as much engagement as possible

    I was a mod on a relatively popular German forum back in the late nineties. Around 1998 we noticed that some content was obviously scripted. So we came together once a month and deleted fake accounts. That turned into every week, and eventually what we did most of the time. By then you could only join by personal recommendation. Still it felt like a Zerg rush at times. Parallel to that we were constantly hit with copyright strikes, cease and desist letters, being reported to the police for everything you could imagine. We shut it down in 2004 because we were convinced, that almost all traffic and content was created by bots by then. In hindsight I have to say it looks as if they where actively funneling the internet into a more controllable direction.

      No, I dont find that to be true. The more Ive made an effort to rekindle and cultivate my social life and spend less time online after becoming fully internet addicted during the Covid lockdown, the more Ive realised how little the internet reflects real life. Granted people are poor and angry, but there is mainly solidarity between individuals. There isnt the landscape that is talked about online with people barely able to hold a conversation without clawing each other's eyes out. Those people are in the minority irl, and usually are people who are terminally online and are shunted off to a little corner for people who cant behave. The majority of people you can have a pretty civil political discussion with even from totally opposite ends of the spectrum. If a person is interested in politics, they will have at least some knowledge of politics to be able to talk about it, either through researching topics or through first hand proximity, and if a person doesnt know much about politics, they will just avoid the subject. Ive spoken to people with some very out there beliefs but the wild screaming matches rarely happen in real life, if ever. I think people are realising how hollow and depressing the internet is and theyre moving away from it back to real conversations and actual hobbies. Thats why the internet is being repopulated with bots, children and AI which are then catered to by ads.

      I thank MGS2 for opening my eyes as a child, and sparing me from the fate of a person that mindlessly consumes whatever he's told by anyone or anything.
      Also, MGS2's famous speech at the end wasn't written by Kojima, but by Fukushima (arguably the REAL genius behind MGS. Kojima just took all the credit by slapping his name on it). The only game of the original 4 that Kojima had complete control over with Fukushima's absence was MGS4....and we all know how that turned out.

    This reminds me of Asheron's Call. The game was released in 1999. After about 6 or so months macro bots started to appear. They were magic casters that would earn experience points casting self spells while standing in a mana pool to maximize the number of spells it could cast in a row without needing to rest. The goal was to level the character while the real person was at work, or on vacation, or otherwise busy with something else.
    By the time the game servers shutdown in 2017 there were more bots than there were real people. By the end, there were unattended combat macros that could do virtually any quest, do the boring level grinds like hunt in a specific dungeon. Even to the point if the bot was running low on supplies it could go back to a town, refill its supplies, go back to the dungeon, go back to where it was in the dungeon, and pick up where it left off.
    Of course this went against the ToS but the last few years before shutdown, there wasn't enough man power at Turbine to actively track down the bots and ban the accounts.
    But that's not the end of the story. Now, server emulators are keeping the game alive. There are some servers that have a crap ton of bots but, for the most part, private servers have account limits and even restrictions to absolutely no bots allowed under any circumstance.
    Maybe the internet will eventually go a similar route. The internet is technically a bunch of servers all over the globe connected by communication cables. It's not out of the realm that people just make a new private internet and restrict all bots. The easiest path would be for our current internet to just remove bots but I figure private internet systems will happen first.

Unfortunately, such a mandate would most certainly require the user's identity be tied to content and queries generated, and thus this really becomes not the death of the internet, but of anonymity.

    • @Bearded-northern-guy
      @Bearded-northern-guy 3 месяца назад +6

      Exactly that. I at least do not know one person who is less on the internet than 20 years ago.
      I think It’s the centralisation of platforms that make it simpler for bots being more prominent out there.
      But that’s human behaviour though that most of the people tend to go just on a few sites/apps a day … mostly there where the rest is. And if you focus the bot traffic only on those few platforms, then it seems way worse than it actually is in a grand scheme of things. Especially if the bot content is engineered to be clickbaity and people actually interacting with them. I personally actually only see the comment bots on here when I’m there within the first 12 hours after upload, the rest is actually pretty well filtered out for me 😅
      But I do not really have a solution for this, that realistically works. Especially none, that we as a rather tiny (compared to the internet) community could do.
      So I guess the internet goes through a similar cycle as everything else. It growths slowly, then really fast. Too fast and then it breaks one after another till it collapses and from the remains we are then building something better. And im mean not even on a technological level, but on a societal one. As this, is a societal problem in my opinion too. Most people had to figure out the Internet on their own. No learning are there from hundreds of years that could be past along.

    the sad thing is, it’s super easy to tell when it’s AI on Facebook specifically. like when images just don’t look quite right, and when I go into the comments literally NONE of them are pointing it out. I think that’s the first platform that will need a hard reset or a very intense bot purge, because it’s clearly lost its way. I wonder if a timeline could be made that showcases just when the internet tipped a lil too towards bot activity, because it was active before AI image generation became mainstream. I can personally believe the statistics that there are more bots than human users. But I think it is a little misleading. A better question would be: “what percentage of users that we interact with are actually bots?”.
    When I imagine dead internet theory, the fear comes from that we aren’t having real human connections or interactions.
    I think at this stage, on services that are widely used like Internet forums etc, I don’t think the numbers of active users that we interact with are mostly be bots

      Then that gets rid of anonymity and opens people up to real attacks even more than they happen now. There would still be fake accounts too, like there are people with fake IDs.

    • @lordn3m3sis
      @lordn3m3sis 2 месяца назад +2

      @@medhathobo real anonymity on the internet is very dependent on your tech skills, if facebook verifies your account you would need to hack facebook to get that information, unless you're ready to claim that facebook is disclosing that information to third parties but then you're in full conspiracy territory.
      An id code has by definition no duplicate, so if an Id is verified unless there's a bug in the code there's no way you can make fake accounts with the same id so that's not really an argument.
      I think that platforms such as twitter/X where people actually get their information on politics and where influential people have the power to actually reach a lot of people with lies upon lies than yes, I'm fine with such platforms being required to verify your account before you can post your crap there.
      I think this obsession with anonymity is just a talking point people use mainly because of their political affiliation

    The biggest impact I see lately is on communities. These used to be open, often running their own forum or being on some public one. Hobbyists, gaming communities, professionals, clans, and so on. And like RUclips gobbled up all the video content, Instagram and a few others the image centric content, so is Discord eating up communities, one by one. And locking them away: you need to be a member of Discord and of that community to see the content. Worse: it is not even being indexed by search engines: discussions and information remains hidden. Even within the communities the information disappears: the same questions being asked and answered over and over again, because there's no threading and their search is terrible. Discord is where knowledge goes to die... and it goes on, day after day.
