  • Hello guys and gals, it's me Mutahar again! This time we take a look at what appears to be "The Dead Internet Theory" and how it's not a theory but objective fact as Internet traffic is slowly shifting from primarily human traffic to completely automated in a disturbing trend that could send the Internet into critical mass. Thanks for watching!

I'm talking 90s to early 2000s, mainly the days of geocities, sure you'd get a lot of crummy looking websites but at least it showed personality. Now, with the proliferation of AI and social media, the internet is a sanitized corporate landscape.

You also just got access to objectively more information back then. Those crummy looking websites and forums were filled to the brim with useful information. Now it's all gone. For example, I used to mod games like HL2 and Gmod and while there's still some good info out there, without the Facepunch forum there is a MASSIVE vacuum of knowledge on niche engine features that very few people actually have now. Good luck if you don't know those people or can't contact them reliably.

This reminds me of Asheron's Call. The game was released in 1999. After about 6 or so months macro bots started to appear. They were magic casters that would earn experience points casting self spells while standing in a mana pool to maximize the number of spells it could cast in a row without needing to rest. The goal was to level the character while the real person was at work, or on vacation, or otherwise busy with something else.
By the time the game servers shutdown in 2017 there were more bots than there were real people. By the end, there were unattended combat macros that could do virtually any quest, do the boring level grinds like hunt in a specific dungeon. Even to the point if the bot was running low on supplies it could go back to a town, refill its supplies, go back to the dungeon, go back to where it was in the dungeon, and pick up where it left off.
Of course this went against the ToS but the last few years before shutdown, there wasn't enough man power at Turbine to actively track down the bots and ban the accounts.
But that's not the end of the story. Now, server emulators are keeping the game alive. There are some servers that have a crap ton of bots but, for the most part, private servers have account limits and even restrictions to absolutely no bots allowed under any circumstance.
Maybe the internet will eventually go a similar route. The internet is technically a bunch of servers all over the globe connected by communication cables. It's not out of the realm that people just make a new private internet and restrict all bots. The easiest path would be for our current internet to just remove bots but I figure private internet systems will happen first.

Plain and simple cash grabs with just enough real interactions and success stories to make most of their users think that they actually have a chance. The more the comments, views and subscribers the more the cash flow for sites, including of course RUclips and any creators that are deemed worthy of this to keep the wheels turning. Bots are crucial for greed and because of that things will only continue to get worse.

There is easier answer to why internet feels so empty and repetitive: because people are shallow and unimaginative.
People didn't change that much from mediveal era. Interesting persons were put in history by their deeds, while simple people had nothing to offer. Fast forward to modern era, and now you see the same picture: a small bunch of bright personalities produce remarkable content, while majority of people has nothing meaningful to contribute. The only difference is that now simple people have access to the same means to produce content as those bright individuals, so we ended up with trash meaningless content prevailing over an interesting one.
This trash content is so bad, that we can observe similarities in thoughts of different people, which leaves a footprint in our brains that internet is lifeless and full of repetitions.

    • @koutsioj4762

While I'm not going to say you're completely wrong, the special interest niches of the internet are still reasonably engaging, with fewer "boring" seeming people.
The issue is that aside from spectacles (notable events, people, whatever) we only tend to find people with similar interests and life experiences interesting. The internet removes us from all our "natural" niches (formed by activities, proximity etc) and dumps us all into one big incompatible mess that leaves you feeling bored and alone if you don't find a corner with like minded people. And then the algorithms got completely unhinged, we got addicted to conflict, and the bots happened and everything got infinitely worse.

Twitter drama has been on the news (not just internet news circles or youtube channels, but fucking cable TV too) all day every day since the early to mid 2010s, maybe even earlier. The authority doesn’t know which site asked for verification, and the site never sees your personal info, just a simple confirmation

We already fail in this department because on some government sites they take your SSN when it should only be used for social security, we instead use it to verify things like opening bank accounts which is a huge blunder.

One thing I disagree on is the recommended algorithms. They are made to keep you watching and to show you content that you might like but this is not necessarily bad. Without those algorithms I would've never found this and other channel I like watching for example.
Same thing applies to other social media as well. It is bad that those algorithms basically make a profile of what you like in order to recommend things to you but I think it's better than having to search for something you might like through what is most popular, especially if that thing is a niche or you are not searching for something specific.
A lot of people enter the sites without having a specific thing they want to watch for example. They want for the site to surprise them.

The problem isn't really about the overwhelming number of bots generating content. Those are fine.
The real issue is that now the bots themselves are being trained ON data that is itself ai-generated. So as the information is digested by bots over and over again, you get this human centipede effect where everything turns into noise.

First off, I want to say that someone should create a drinking game: When ever Mutahar says "At the end of the day"...drink... :)
But seriously. These statements are my opinion and observations. These preferential algorithms are contributing to the feeling like the internet is dead or empty. These algorithms, even with youtube, limit you so much, we all could be ignorant of maybe 98% of the content on this site, but will never experience it because the system does not allow you to.
Have you ever also noticed there is a huge disconnect between what youtubers/streamers consider major topics and what the major tv stations ( or people that do not spend any time on youtube) consider news? If you go to someone that doesn't do anything on youtube and Ask them about some of the things on this channel, or his friends channels ( someone with coffee in the name maybe) and ask them about any of the major content, that person would be clueless. It is almost like 2 different worlds.
But you are right, the main problem is this marketing / payment industry based on "views" that is driving so many bots. And google / youtube are not motivated to do anything about it because it artificially inflates their numbers. If there is 100,000 bots generating maybe millions of views or comments, that is just more traffic they can sell to advertisers. They don't care, because it is more money.
