- In this Sansevieria episode, I team up with Oma Lien, a rare sansevieria enthusiast and grower here in Indonesia. We break it down into 2 parts so as not to overwhelm you. In this first episode, we talk about collection history and basic cultivation in Indonesia. Oma Lien helps break down sansevierias into 3 categories, and explain that the trifasciata is some of the hardest variety to care for. She also generously shared care tips of the trifasciatas. We then look at 3 sansevieria hybrids in bloom as I ask all the right questions about their flowering, pollination, hybridization, and propagation.
TIMELINE
01:04 Collection history in Indonesia
02:55 Three sansevieria categories
03:06 Trifasciata are the hardest!
03:47 Sansevieria flowers and propagation

I love... this.. so much. 😍 It's incredible that the internet allows me to view any collection anywhere in the world. 🥰 I so enjoy these garden tours!! Incredible.
Thank you 🥰🥰
I really appreciate you doing the voice over. It does make a difference. I have so many chores to do and listening to you and learning about plants is so relaxing. Thank you. And who doesnt love sansevieria? I want some more of them
Thank you 🥰🥰
I love that you are doing a tour of this. Thank you for taking us on tour and for always thinking of your viewers (with the voiceover).
I learned a lot from part 1 and cannot wait to see the next. Take care.
Thank youuu. Stay tuned for more!
I lived in Sumatra and it made me so happy to see someone from Indonesia. George’s. Thank you😇
Whoaaa thats cool, Ive never been so Sumatra myself!
Wonderful video, especially loved the insert of the Dracena flower stalk to compare with the Sansevieria. Joey Santore ( Crime Pays But Botany Doesent) always says to ID a plant, look at the flowers! I did not understand the reclassification to Dracena until I saw a snake plant in flower. Very fragrant at night, both of them too. Thank you Sean and Oma-Lien! 🌱💚
You’re welcome 🥰
One of the best collector 🎉🎉🎉 Royalty of Sansevieria
❤️❤️
Thank you for the voice over! Definitely helpful!
Yayeee
Wow, this is breathe taking. Sansevierias are my favourite plants
❤️❤️
Hi Seun!I'm from the Philippines .In our province we make sanseveria as our house fence and we really like it.😊
Haha they do make a beautiful fence actually
I love Oma-Lien’s shirt 🥰
Lots of interesting information! Thank you!
🥰🥰
Very interesting. I live in Germany and only have round leaf Sansevierias. We can't keep our plants outside, as we have harsh winters with frost. So my plants only live indoors. They are one of the most hearty plants I ever came across. One of them flowered a few years ago and still does great, so it puzzles me to hear that they should theoretically die off after the flower. Mine definitely didn't get the note for this ^^
By the way, "Oma" also is the German word for granny.
Sorry for my English, I hope you understood what I wrote.
They will die off in years I guess… they are such slow beings. But after they flower they most likely would produce pups from below.. and the pups will flower when its time and the cycle repeats until you have a circus of them 😅
@@onlyplants Yes, they produce new shoots all the time and get bushier that way. They are really beautiful and such an easy to care for plant.
I will agree with grandma’s assessment that trifasciata, especially the dwarf or hahniis are the most difficult to care for. I stopped collecting them for a year and focused on flat type and cylindrical type before I found the courage to add them again in my collection. I only have few trifasciatas now, those I think are hardy and will survive in my garden.
Anyway, thank you so much for this video, I am a Sansevieria collector from where that hybrid of Atty. Pepito came from, the Philippines!❤
@@jardinnimaioraj2566 That's why I said at the beginning of my post, that I only have the round leaf type, which I'm talking about. I never had any other Sansevieria other than the round leaf ones.
@@petrescuework-difficultcas6581 ow sorry, I did not take that in the context of my reply, mea culpa, I will just edit my statement☺️
I totally agree with trifasciata. They are prone to rot spots no matter what soil i use especially how I keep them outdoors during the rainy season.
Yeah I honestly thought they were they easiest sansevieria
Oma is also the common German term for granny. Opa is the grandpa.
Super Video! I am amazed at your language skill, it's perfect!
Whoaaaa its crazy that in most cultures, pa means father and ma means mother too. I wonder how every civilization came up with similar wordings.
@@onlyplants Latin roots!
Yep, they do flower, mine do every year, I believe they have to be in full sun to do so. And they have beautiful scents, they are in bloom right now
Mine flowered for the first time this week! It knew we had a sansevieria episode. Their blooms are so gorgeous
I’ve really enjoyed getting a view into some of her collection. I’m ready to see the rest of her collection. I’ve liked your “field trips” to the other collectors lately. ❤ nice job!
Thank youu. Ferns and nepenthes are coming up next!
I'm from Thailand bro thank for your videos that made me inspiration to keep this african plant in the right way and to know many new hybrids in indonesian. Waiting for your new videos for Cycad and Encephalatos coz I see many Indonesian collectors keep this type of plant alot.
Thank you, hope you will enjoy the next episode we have some cycads!
Looking forward to the next episode with oma lien
🥰🥰 it is epic
Thank you so much for doing the voiceover! Hope all is well with you.
Thank youu 🥰🥰
Best collection of Sansevieria I’ve ever seen! Can’t wait to see more! I love her t-shirt, it’s beautiful! Learned a few new facts about this genus. I don’t have problems growing the trifasciata type indoors in New England, USA but I do give them as much sun as possible and let the soil dry out almost completely before watering. The name Sansevieria is my preferred name, people don’t know what plant you are talking about otherwise. I’ve played with Sansevena and Dransevieria for laughs but I’m sticking to the original name!
Thank youu. I think sansevierias are far more befitting!
Thank you for dubbing; I'm actually playing your videos while working. The dubbed version is a great help.
Anyway, i'm green with envy right now. These plants are just gorgeous!
Thanks for letting me know! 1-2 people usually complain about wanting the original audio on but I always had the feeling most prefer dubbed.
Just met her recently (end of january) ! 😁 To pick up my wishlist, sansevieria royal crown white variegated, the same plant at the left bottom corner at the beginning of video ( probably that is THE PLANT i bought from her 😁). After Pak Greg Hambali videos, now Oma Lien, oh man you've spoiled me Sean, thank you so much 🙏
Haha thank you. Hope to visit more experts. Feel free to make recommendations! DM me on instagram if you feel there are people whose stories I must share
Thank you for voiceover!
🥰🥰
This VO is so so so much better ❤❤❤❤ I appreciate you understanding sometimes we all play your videos and listen to you while we do the whole day and for me most of the time I play you videos on a loop I find it relaxing 😅 we want more of this garden tours please please please 🙏 ❤❤❤❤ we love you 🤘🤘🤘
Yayyye thanks for letting me know
I love sansevieria. I have a few varieties in our home. They are still in their juvenile state. I can't wait for your part 2 episode. Thank you very much, Sean. Have a blessed day ☺️
Thank you. ❤️

OMG! Thank you Sean. More of Sansevieria Videos and I hope Dieffenbachia next.
🥰🥰 Looking for recommendations on dieffenbachia expert to interview!
@@onlyplants Thailand has many Dieffen hybrids. Look for Dieffenbachia Rex, Dieffenbachia FBI, Dieffenbachia Memoria Corsii. Dieffenbachia Moonstone, Diefffenbachia Panther, Dieffenbachia Tropical Tiki.
Atty. Pepito Mercado's hybrids are beautiful. Please make the part 2 longer.
It is longer and lots more visuals 🥰 its up later tonight!
@@onlyplants 😍
so funny on the sweet smell at night which remind me of a ghost story i have watch , i also know its probably some night bloom flower scent , which the wind can carry the scent
A lot of ghostly encounters can be explained away by science I think 😀
Her collection is 💋!
❤️❤️
Incredible Sean how many differents types of sanseverias are..in my country we have only four .. they are really amazing.. congratulations to her..She's an incredible woman
Thank youu. Stay tuned for the next episode, when we actually tour her collection!
So happy..
I’m waiting for someone to come to Oma Lien’s house to find all of her collections. And BOOM!! Look what she got
She is the granny of sansevieria in this country i think :D
Haha yes shes also very cheerful
Such an amazing collection!! My eyes are drawn to the bluish cycads in the background. Please feature those as well. Thank you.
Thank youu. Will be covering my dads cycads soon! Its insane as well

OMG, thanks Sean for making this video. 😊 I love Sansevierias! 😍 I have around 30 kind of Sansevierias, from those 3 cathegories, and some of them have flowers now. 😊
Whoaaaa thats cool. The next episode is a tour to see her collection! Didnt know there were so many forms of them
@@onlyplants Yay, can't wait to watch the next one. 😊
Wow, such unique presentation of a plant collection. These plants truly speak to you (must be plant language lol) and one can feel that the owner Oma Lein fully embraces nature and what is drawn to them, I was totally mesmerized, thank you for sharing Sean, keep up the great work, wish you the best!! 💦🌱💫
Thank youu

Nice garden sir and some are rare in our place
Thank you 😀❤️ they are considered rare to me too!
Sansevieria sounds so much nicer than dracaena. They will always be sansevierias to me!
High five
Fascinating! Thank you so much for this episode. I've killed many common sansiverias, I did not realise that they are sensitive plants.
Yeah overwatering seems to be the common cause.

Thanks Sean. Looking forward to part two. ❄️💚🙃
Thanks Judy! Always good to see your comments
Thank you Sean. That was fascinating. I'm really enjoying this species focus.
Thank you 🥰 fern and nepenthes are coming soon!
at 1:53-54 at first I thought you said 'Helps remove Politics from the air' ( I'm sure you said 'pollutants' ) your English is awesome , but when my ears heard 'politics' I laughed so hard and I may go purchase a Sanseveria now lol!!
Lol what better reason to purchase a sansevieria than this 🤣
Love this can’t wait for part 2 💚
Cant wait to show it. Theres so many sansevierias even Ive never seen before.
So awesome
🥰🥰

Thanks for this video on sansevieria. In Poland where I live, they are immensely popular. I have over 30 different ones and counting. Greetings Irena
Whoaaa interesting… they are the underdogs here in Indonesia, shadowed by the aroids and other genus
Beautiful...
Thank you ❤️❤️
Thanks!

PUMPED for this video! I want to start a collection :)
Oma is granny in German too 🥹
Bahahaha LOLed so hard when you told us to take a shot for each time you call them sansevieria 😂
Haha yes sansevierias are quite bad*ss. Mine started flowering hard maybe because it knows I released a sansevieria episode.
Interesting info on sanseveria !
🥰🥰
More care tips and an insane rare sansevieria tour in the next episode! Stay tuned
Thanks a lot for an amazing vlog! I love Sansevieria❤
Thank you Azar
So nice 🌵🎍
🥰🥰
Perhaps they need fungicide because of a humid climate?
I have a number of different 40 year old plants grown indoors in Chicago which have never had any pest or fungal problems
Oh yes the humidity and mold/spores are more prevalent here
i also..like this beatiful plant.
Thank you 😀
Wow

Thank you ❤️
Oma is actually Dutch for "granny" and Lien is a common name in the Netherlands, Sean...
Whoaaa maybe the name is remnant from the Dutch days in Indonesia! How cool
German as well!
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

You shoud do the Diffenbachia tour for the next, tapi ngg tau si di Indo ada penghobi Diffenbachia atau ngga ,
Tapi aku ga tau nama nama dieffenbachias nya 🥲
I love sansevieria plants but I've never seen mine bloom
they do take a longggg time and the right conditions to bloom. Dry and bright periods seem to do the trick
You are to kind of doing a audio dub 🤙🏽
Thank youuu
how much sanseviera
“Oma” is indeed dutch for grandmother
Whoaaaa
Hello my friend. do you know some friends of you that Export plants for Brasil ? ❤️🙏
