yeah, outside of the release maps and a handful of the ones added by valve until 2014ish very few of them properly use soundscapes. foundry is probably the last community map i know of with complete soundscape coverage.
still i absolutely adore the atmosphere in every valve game but portal does it better than the rest. you always have the feeling of something just appearing behind that is beyond human comprehension but nope its just another white wall

Hl2 is so damn unnerving and creepy, I'm not even talking about the beta, the game itself is surrounded by this aura of uncanniness that scares me, stuff like radio1, stalkers and ravenholm being among the creepiest.
I've never played hl1 in all my life and I decided one day to try it out, the first time I played this game I felt so fucking creeped out the entire time. The research facility felt so empty and the eerie few sounds of machines clunking in the railway sections got me extremely scared. I hated the military guys in the game, theya are annoying to deal with but hearing their voices when they're near makes me feel less scared because I don't feel alone.
I honestly think Portal should be higher. Half-Life 2 is dark and prob deserves #1, but in terms of atmosphere, there’s a feeling that Portal has that no other Valve game does. You can’t forget Self-Esteem Fund.
@@mineturtle2 I’m talking about the l4d1 atmosphere. The atmosphere in HL2 is more or less modern and dystopian. Left for dead’s environment is incredibly gloomy and depressing
