Mike Was being a Brat he deserved that Slap.
Also the fact that he slapped back and doesnt have any lasting marks on him is telling as I know for a Fact that if i slapped my Mother after she slapped me Id be dead.
Moms are not to be trifled w/. They bring you into this world and they can take you out.
Yes its also telling that William didnt even Lay a Hand on mike and just Scolded him. Especially when considering that in this era Fathers tended to be more heavy handed, but william scolding him instead of beating him shows a Precedent and Example to Follow. Mike was in the wrong here and hitting back only dug himself a deeper Grave.
Some people may say that its abusive to Hit your kids but considering he had the Gall to Slap back instead of Back down Indidcates that it didnt even hurt that much, that his reaction wasmore one of surprise than Pain. The fact that he didnt get a Beating after slapping back also indicates this as well because it indicates Mrs.Afton Doubted she could actually punish him w/ Violence in the 1st place And Make it Phase him. Which implies that Mike is Stronger than her and she knows it. She didnt Beat him further and Just Had william handle it when he got home because mike likely sees William as an authority Figure to be either feared and respected.
Lastly b4 any of you spoiled idiots saying "Mikes a Kid, Shes the adult" mikes own Words were "Im not a Child I can do what i want" signifying that he foesnt see himself as a Child so in response She treated him like an adult. That includes being Disciplined as One people. In the military, you disrespect a Superior officer, you get Slapped. You mouth off to the wrong person in the street, You might get stabbed. Asking Your Kids to Take responsibility and Pitch in to help w/ house work isnt a Bad thing. They live there too, and As long as you as the adult are doing your share as well I.E. working a Job to earn money and put food on the table, pay bills to keep the heat and Electricity on, yiu are doing your share as an adult in the house. And the fact that mikes Response to her initial Scolding simply suggests he does not care to contribute and Does not respect His mother. All it wouldve taken to avoid this was To just be a bit more apologetic and say "Im sorry" w/ a Bit more shame in his tone instead of "You done?" Because its easy for adults to get their temper riled up when You respond like that, But they cant justifiably Stay mad at you when you apologize and be genuine about it.

I know this 1sthand and when I've said this to others they react w/ "So you support abusive Parents"
Personally speaking I preferred being Slapped than yelled at. Because a Slap only hurts for a Second. But the Words a parent says when they're angry .... Those words can Last a Lifetime. And no one seems to understand that anymore.

It doesn't matter if you are a man or a woman, a child is a child and you have no right to touch that child. I would give it back at least because it's beating children, and I don't care about Mrs. Afton's gender. The children have done nothing wrong here, she just thinks they can do a lot. But if she had been hit with afton, she would have remained silent and left her son alone due to fear
