Pike Rods through my years of Pike fishing

  • A little chat about Pike Fishing Rods.
When I started fishing for Pike I was about 11 or 12 I fished as a junior in a local Pike match winter league on Lough Muck outside Omagh I fished for the Elpaso Bar team it was a introduction to Pike fishing.
It taught me some good things and I seen some things that even then I knew were not acceptable but it's easy to look back at fishing in the 1990s and pick faults in the tactics the gear used and the general attitudes to Pike.
Without those early days I'd not have go into Pike fishing, today Pike is my passion I love fishing for them they are the apex predator in NI and the ROI this is a brief discussion about the progression of the fishing gear I used how I started and where I am right now.
    Dave lumb rods:-
    www.dlst.co.uk/
The first Pike rod I ever bought was a Shakespeare Persuit Pike Rod a 12' 3lb tc rod I think at the time it was £60 or £70 I scraped together the pennies to buy three of them and I still have two of them today I've used them as marker and spod rods.
Then I picked up some Greys Prodigy and Prowla rods that I still have and if your fishing with me these are my spares so you will get these to use, if I had to go back to using these I'd have no problem doing so. I have two models the Prodigy is a 12' 3lb tc rod and the Prowla is a 12' 3.5lb tc rod. Like I say excellent rods and not super expensive either.
Now I have Dave Lumb BB350 & D-3 rods these are custom built to my specifications. These are the rods I'm fully intending to use for the rest of my days of Pike Fishing.
The BB350 is a 12' 3.5lb tc rod and its a pleasure to play fish on great casting tool and I can put on a 4oz lead and a bait then launch it to the horizons or I can flick the same bait out into the margins and if the Pike picks it up I'm able to set the hook and play the fish to the net without fear of pulling the hooks out the fishes mouth.
The D-3 is a 13' 4lb tc rod its a big bait long range tool. I can drop baits out at distance with a baitboat then knowing full well when it comes to setting the hooks and wrestling a big old Esox to the bank.
Can you tell I'm getting excited for this year's Pike fishing season.

In the late 60s/early 70s when I started pike fishing as a kid, dedicated gear was almost non-existent. The few rods that had "pike" written on them were likely to have 6 lb test curves and give you work out biceps. My first pike rod was a 10ft glass Shakespeare that stopped nodding five minutes after being laid in the rests. Beachcaster rods were not unknown for pike, live bait hung on snap-tackle was the norm, and you had to know someone who could make spoons large and heavy enough to cast. Fish care was negligible to non-existent.
Pike fishing was mainly a still water pursuit, and I don't recall seeing anyone river fishing for pike until the 1980s, though they must have done so. Angling pressure for pike was much lighter. Whenever I discover a Dave Lumb shaped gap in rod collection comprised of Fox products, I remember my nodding Shakespeare and it goes away.. until next time! Seeing your Lumby's has done nothing to help this condition!

I grew up in the 80s & 90s fishing for Pike here in NI was something that was to occupy the game fishing close season. I had to make most of my own gear, trace wire was something I pinched from a mate who tuned pianos looking back I'm amazed Pike took the baits I threw for them.
Angling for Pike has come on leaps and bounds since then thankfully, glad your enjoying the videos buddy thanks for the comment.

We never had unhooking mats in the early days long grass did the job! Still have my old pike gear too primitive to nows gear! Got my old drennan pike floats too

    • @DavidScobie
      @DavidScobie  5 лет назад

I made my first unhooking mat out of a old gortex jacket and foam roll mat for camping, it was folded in half glued then wrapped with the two gortex jackets and sowed together. Using Piano wire for hook trace material home made drop arms and floats was a necessity because you couldn't buy it off the shelf.
Its a different game when you look at what you started out with to what's available now.

I also had the greys prowla 12ft rods, cracking rods, but hated the reel seat, my shimano 8000 gtw used to wobble in them when playing a fish! more suited to a larger bigpit reel with a wider neck!

The Dave Lumb BB350s are excellent long range Pike rods, I use some similar Harrison blanks if I am using my carbon rods, not sure about modern Greys rods, I have seen quite a few bad reviews on them, I still have and use a Greys Loch Leven 7ft lure rod, about 25 years old and built on a Fibatube carbon blank, top quality.

    • @DavidScobie

The Greys Prodigy Deadbait rods the first gen ones the 12ft 3lb tc are beautiful rods for the money, but Greys changed the design and started the Prowla range those to me felt a step down in quality the Prowla rods I owned were 12ft 3.5lb tc for some reason the eyes were tiny on the blank and it felt weird casting bigger baits with it the first few months using it the varnish on the rod round the eyes would creak and crack this scares the crap out of you when your properly loading up a cast and throwing bigger baits there's times I honestly thought the rod would disintegrate on the cast but after a few months of being used the creaking and cracking stopped and I could bully the rod.
For the money they couldn't be argued with if I'm honest and if I had to use them tomorrow I'd be perfectly happy doing so. But compared to Dave Lumb Rods it's like comparing a cheese burger to a steak the burger will feed you and you might be satisfied but it just doesn't compare to a good steak dinner man.

Thanks for sharing. I was looking for info for what pound blank to get for a pike rod. Seems like 3lb minimum and 4lb for big baits. I was looking at some budget options for a pike-carp rod here in the USA, not many options. My family lived in England from 1983-87. My father was in the US Air force, stationed at RAF Alconbury. We loved it there, wonderful people. I hope to go back and fish the lakes and rivers of my memories there, Tight lines to you sir.

1992 Shakespeare Specimen Pike 11ft 2.5 TC rod...proper through action rod, had car crash in 2006 n lost them. Just recently bought one on ebay 4 nostalgia. Greys GS prowl a 11ft 2.5 Tc now...great rods for playing pike, a lot of 12 ft rods now are too tip action only, even tho they try to distinguish themselves from carp rods. Next ones will be Freespirit...they are the only ones who know how to make proper pike rods now greys have discontinued.

Starterd of with a pair of daiwa black widow carp rods and they were the biggest pile of pish!
I then changed to the greys prowla platinums in 12ft 3lb and till this day they are the best rod I have ever used ( why I sold them I will never know 😥)
Moved onto a set of drennan Essox pike flex rods and would not recommend them at all.
So for the coming season i am going to try my new daiwa powermesh deadbait specialists in 12ft 3lb tc and see how they get on🤞

Greys Prodigy deadbait rods were way ahead of there time I've still got my set of them, it was weird the Prowla rods Greys made weren't the same as the Prodigy.

David Scobie never sell you greys as they are one of the best ever made, I really don’t understand why greys discontinued the prowlas when they had the perfect pike rod on their hands.
2 of my drennans top sections went bang on a cast 🤬🤬 so will never have faith in them again.
I’ll give these daiwas a real good go over winter and see how they perform!

    • @DavidScobie
      @DavidScobie  4 года назад

Ian Carp rods will cope for Pike fishing you just have to operate within their limitations, but a standard 12ft 3lb test should be fine.
Throwing a 3oz lead and a tigernut is a million miles away from a 3oz lead and a 10oz mackerel tail so you have to beef up your gear to match.
I have smashed rods in the past trying to cast to heavy a load so go easy buddy until you get the feel of your gear.
Reels won't be a problem I use 10000 size shimanos baitrunners with either 20lb mono or 50lb braid.
Let me know how you get on Ian and thanks for taking the time to ask me.
